The out there was really quite amazing—I had never seen so much sand in my life! While we were there, we 56 with a tour company to ride camels. I was very excited because this was the first time I had seen one up close. We had hoped that we would get to see some other on our trip, but sadly we didn’t. Since you are going to the Sahara, I have some advice-----be sure to bring a large hat and a shirt with long sleeves -----you’ll need these for . The sun can be so that you’ll need to keep covered or you’ll get burnt-----my cheeks were so red for days after my trip. And another thing, you’ll need to keep a good of water with you, since it is so dry and hot. I am sure you’ll have a nice trip. I look forward to receiving your postcards!

Best wishes

Habits, whether good or bad,are gradually formed When a person does a certain thing again, he is driven by some unseen force to do the same thing repeatedly, and then a habit is formed.Once a habit is formed,it is difficult, and sometimes impossible,to get rid of.It is therefore very important that we should pay great attention to the formation of habits.Children often form bad habits, some of which remain with them as long as they live older. Persons also form bad habits lasting as long as they live,

There are other habits which, when formed in early life, are of great help. Many successful men say that much of their success has something to do with certain habits in early life, such as early rising, honesty and so on.

“I don’t like my parents. They always tell me I should do this, and should not do that. It sometimes makes me angry,” said Li Ping, a middle school student in Hunan. Do you have the same problem? Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were your age long ago. Why does it seem that some parents are not so friendly in their children’s eyes?

One of the biggest things is when someone becomes a parent, he / she likes worrying things. They worry about everything about you, from the time you were born. They do a lot for you, though something would make you angry, because they care about you and worry about you. They worry about your choice of friends, the food you eat, your work at school, how much sleep you get, etc. All these things are part of your life. They want you to grow up healthily and happily.

So how can you make things easier on yourself? It’s easier than you think. Just make sure your parents know what you’re doing. Get them to know your friends. Phone if you stay somewhere else so that your parents don’t call every hospital in the phone book looking for your body. Say sorry to them when you make mistakes. Take responsibility (责任) for what you have done. Talk about your ideas with them. They may talk about theirs with you.

Most of all, try to think about why your parents do this or do that. They are still practicing being parents and need help you can give them. Someday, when you become a parent, they may be able to help you know how to get on with your children.

56. What does the writer think we should do if we go back home later than usual? We should ________.

A. tell our friends B. tell the teacher

C. say sorry to our parents D. make a telephone call to our parents

57. The writer thinks ________.

A. it’s wrong of parents to worry about their children too much

B. some parents are unfriendly, which makes their children angry

C. children should do everything as their parents say

D. parents love their children very much and the children should understand them

58. Which do you think is the best title for the passage?

A. Parents’ Responsibility B. How to Get on with Parents

C. Zhang Hua’s Problem D. What Are Parents Worrying about

B

It was a quiet village in which there was a military camp (军营). It was far from the towns

and cities and there were some high mountains around. Of course it was a good place for training the new soldiers. But it was difficult for the young men to go outside. Mr. White, an officer of forty, was strict with them and he hardly let them leave the camp.

Once Mr. White was ill in bed. He couldn’t work and a young officer, Mr. Hunt, began to train the new soldiers instead of him. He knew the young men well and let nine soldiers go to the nearest town to have a holiday. But night fell and none came back to the camp. He was worried about it and stood at the gate. It was five to twelve when Mr. Hunt decided to go to the town and see what was happening to the young men. He started the car quickly and set off. At that moment the nine soldiers came back. It seemed they drank wine. Of course they found the officer was angry.

“I’m sorry, sir,” said the first soldier. “I left the town on time. But something was wrong with my bus on my way here. I had to buy a horse and made it run fast. Bad luck! It died and I had to run back.”

And the other seven soldiers said they were late for the same reasons. It was the last soldier’s turn. He said, “I’m sorry, sir. I got on a bus on time, but....”

Having heard this, the officer became even angrier and stopped him at once. He called out, “If you say something was wrong with your bus, I’ll punish you at once!”

“No, no, sir,” said the young man. “My bus was all right, but the dead horses were in its way!”

C

Everyone knows you must exercise regularly to keep good health. Indeed, staying physically fit is a big part of our culture, we consider (or rightly so) that healthy people are attractive people. Since most of us want to be attractive, there is no shortage of exercise clubs, training videos, magazines and books offering to help us stay physically fit.

Unfortunately, however, our culture doesn’t place the same emphasis (重视) on mental fitness. Although we tend to like men and women with strong, healthy-looking bodies, we don’t have the same degree of respect or attraction for smart, educated, mentally healthy people. This is a pity, because there are great rewards for people who have developed the ability to think well.

If your mind is well trained and flexible (灵活的), you will be able to understand a great

deal of what happens around you. And if you are also well educated—that is, if you understand basic science, mathematics, music, art, literature, history and so on—you will find it much easier over your destiny (命运) and a much better life than otherwise (in another way).

People who are poorly educated or who don’t think well—that is, people who are not mentally fit—see things differently. Their world is controlled by mysterious, often malevolent (恶意的) forces. Such people live within a system they will never master, forced to follow rules they will never understand. Although it may not be obvious, most spend their lives being manipulated (控制) by others. They are told what to do, what to think, how to spend their money, and what they should and should not aspire (渴望) to in life.

In my opinion, if you want to live well, you must be able to use your mind well. For this reason, I want you to be able to concentrate, to solve problems, to understand complex ideas, and to think clearly and quickly. Such skills will make it easier for you to make informed decisions, understand current events, choose good friends, manage your money well, make wise long-term decisions and appreciate music, art and literature.

The key to developing such skills is to enjoy learning, and to have the ability and motivation to teach yourself.

63. The writer of the passage feels disappointed that ________.

A. too little has been done to help people to keep physically fit

B. too much has been done to help people to keep physically fit

C. mentally healthy people are not as popular as physically healthy people

D. physically healthy people are not as popular as mentally healthy people

64. The underlined word “this” in the 3rd paragraph means ____.

A. the understanding of a great deal of what goes on around you

B. the understanding of basic science and mathematics

C. good training in body and mind

D. being able to make good decisions in life

65. The writer of this passage thinks those who are not mentally fit _______.

A. live a poor and mysterious life B. can’t control over their life

C. often do what others do D. enjoy being fooled and ruled

66. The best title of the passage will most probably be ________.

A. Train Your Body B. Train Your Mind

C. Make Informed Decisions D. Think Hard and Work Hard

D If you’ve been joining in chat room conversations, or trading e-mail with net pals(网友), you have become one of the millions who write in a special, short form of English.

Throughout the world, every night children and their elders are “talking” online—many of them are talking at the same time.

It’s fast: trying talking to six people once. It’s convenient: three or four words per exchange. It takes cleverness, concentration and quick fingers.

And it requires very simple language. There’s neither time nor space for explanations. Why waste valuable time telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB (=be right back) will do?

Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI (=pardon me for jumping in).

Edmund Halley(哈雷)was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. He studied the observations of comets(彗星)which other scientists had made. The orbit(轨道)of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not work it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems.

However, Halley had a friend named Newton, who was a brilliant(有才华的) mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse(椭圆).

Now Halley set to work. He worked out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by other scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607, and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearances had been 75 to 76 years apart(相隔).

This seemed very strange to Halley. The different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about it, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets, as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again.

It was an amazing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction(预言)of what would happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halley’s prediction could be tested.

In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he had died some years before. Ever since then that comet has been called Halley’s comet, in his honor.

61. Edmund Halley worked out the orbit of ____________.

A. some different comets appearing several times

B. the same comet appearing at different times

C. three different comets appearing three times

D. several comets appearing at the same time

Sea farming is one of the brightest hopes for finding an answer to the world food problem. Although it may be years before sea farming produces large quantities of food, it is already successful. One of its success is the growing of oysters (牡蛎), which are very good to eat.

Oyster farming is a big new business on Cape Cod, where large crops of oysters have been harvested. The waters there were famous for oysters until the supply gave out about fifteen years ago. “There's a whole age group of people who have never eaten oysters”, said Kari Touraine, manager of a company that grows oysters on nylon strings (尼龙线) hanging from metal frames (框架).

“For about twenty years the oyster has been in short supply, and our aim is to turn around this by using new, modem growing techniques (技术),” he explained.

“Wareham, on Cape Cod, is the first place in the US where oysters are being grown on frames just off the bottom of the sea”, said Mr. Touraine. “It’s been done successfully in Norway and Australia and, in the last few years, in Spain. The Japanese have used this form of sea farming for years, and they're the most

There are many types of reports. A report is simply an account of something that has happened. The commonest are news reports. We get them in newspapers, over radio and on television. Sometimes cinemas also show us newsreels(新闻短片).

When someone says, “Well, I guess I'll have to go to face the music,” it doesn’t mean he is planning to go to a concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you did not do this or that. Terrible music, indeed, but it has to be faced. At some time or another, every one of us has had to “face the music”, especially as children. We can remember father’s angry voice: “I want to talk to you!” And only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!

The phrase “face the music” is known to every American, old and young. It is at least one hundred years old. Where did the expression come from?

The first explanation came from the American novelist James Fenimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, that expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings (舞台的两侧) to go on stage. After they got their clue(暗示) to go on , they often said, “It’s time to go to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did face the orchestra (乐队) which was just below the stage.

An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience(观众) not, there would be no play. So “face the music” came to mean: having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.

China is confident that the Olympic flame will successfully burn brightly and beautifully on the world's tallest peak of Mount Qomolangma, a technician(技术人员) said on Thursday.

Deputy general manager Xue Li with the China Aerospace Science and Industry company, designer of the torch for the 2008 Games, said a lab had been established to develop a special Olympic flame combustion(燃烧) system which could overcome bad natural conditions such as thin air, gales(狂风), glaring sunlight and hailstone(冰雹).

"The flame, about 20 to 30 centimeters high, should be bright and very pleasant to eyes," said the delegate to the ongoing 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

The flame is designed to be able to weather(经受住)strong storms with a wind speed of 24.5 to 32.6 meters per second and a heavy rain with a per-hour precipitation of more than 50 millimeters, he said.

Xue said that besides learning the experiences from previous Olympic flame designs, Chinese technicians have also made a number of innovations(革新) to make sure the flame could outlive wind and storms on top of the peak known to westerners as Mount Everest which stands 8844.43 meters above sea level according to a Chinese survey in 2005.

He also made sure that the fuel would be well stored and pollution-free.

To host an impressive and successful Olympics, China has promised the world it would relay the torch from Olympia, Greece, the cradle(摇篮) of the Olympiad, to Mount Qomolangma upon its application to host the four-yearly event.

"We will live up to the commitment(承诺)," head of the General Administration of Sport Liu Peng said.

Liu also said that apart from the technological advancements to protect the Olympic flame, China also enjoyed an advantage in mountaineering, a sport that had more than 40 years of history in China.

"Many Chinese athletes, men and women, have climbed up the mount. Some reached the peak more than once. The Tibetan mountaineering team have so far mounted all the world's 14 mountains exceeding 8,000 meters tall," Liu told journalists at a briefing on Wednesday.

Fifteen people were killed and 38 others injured in a road accident early Wednesday morning in Enshi,Central China's Hubei Province. The bus, travelling from Wanzhou in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality to Shenzhen in South China's Guangdong Province, had 53 passengers on board, three more than permitted.

At around 1 am on Wednesday, the bus increased speed gradually on a curve(弯路)and plunged more than 30 metres into a valley below. Thirteen people, including one of the two drivers, died at once. Two others died on the way to hospital.

Although the cause of the accident is still unclear, the local police said the driver paid no attention to the official warning signs on the expressway. It hit a section which had been closed as a result of snow. Because of the freezing weather and icy roads, the expressway had been closed by police since Tuesday morning. But the bus drivers took the dangerous route, paying no attention to the warnings.

The rescue team, which included more than 30 medical workers and 120 local villagers, joined together and rushed to the scene at the news of the accident.By 5 am, all of the injured had been sent to three local hospitals for emergency treatment.A hospital source said most of the patients were in a stable(稳定的)condition but a few were still in danger.
