朱生豪翻译的《莎士比亚戏剧集》（以下简称《莎剧集》）在中国近代英译汉的历史上，堪称划时代的翻译文献。他在二十岁之前就选择了莎士比亚，会写诗放弃了写诗，会写文章放弃了写文章，潜心研读莎士比亚的作品，用他的话说：“余笃嗜莎剧，尝首尾研诵全集至十余遍，于原作精神，自觉颇有会心。”想当初，莎士比亚在伦敦戏剧舞台上功成名就，带着钱财和名誉荣归故里，享度晚年，几十个剧本是生是灭根本没往心里去。在莎士比亚死后七年（一六二三年），他的两位演员朋友约翰・赫明斯和亨利・康德尔，把他的三十六个剧本收集成册，加上颂辞补充完整，付梓出版，称为“第一对折本”。人们一点没有意识到，赫明斯和康德尔仅仅出于对朋友的敬意而采取的这一行动，是启动了一个多么巨大的文化工程。这个工程进入中国，认真准备接下来进行另一种文字施工的，直到二十一世纪伊始的今天，也仍只能算朱生豪一个人。除了他，别说把莎剧全部研诵十几遍，就是一个剧本读够十遍，恐怕也很少有几个人做得到，包括《哈姆雷特》诸多译本的译家们。

说是运气也好，巧合也罢，重大的文学事件往往令人难以捉摸却必然会发生。朱生豪在他血气方刚时选择了莎士比亚，是莎翁的运气，是中国读者的福气。朱生豪在世界书局出版的他的大译《莎士比亚全集》（以下简称《全集》）“译者自序”里说：“中国读者耳莎翁大名已久，文坛知名之士，亦尝将其作品，译出多种，然历观坊间各译本，失之于粗疏草率者尚少，失之于拘泥生硬者实繁有徒。拘泥字句之结果，不仅原作神味，荡焉无存，甚且艰深晦涩，有若天书，令人不能卒读，此则译

者之过，莎翁不能任其咎者也。”这番话有两层意思：其一，这是他调动了全部智慧与心血尝试翻译诗体莎剧后的严肃结论。读过朱译本《莎剧集》的人都知道，朱生豪在每个剧本中都尽量试着用诗体翻译莎剧里的诗；有些译作相当精彩，例如，《哈姆雷特》中的“戏中戏”，《罗密欧与朱丽叶》中的大量诗篇等等。其二，对莎剧在中国的翻译经过了解一些情况的人应该知道，大约在上世纪三十年代，中英某些好事机构内定了包括徐志摩、梁实秋等人来翻译莎剧。这种行为恐怕深深刺激了默默无闻的朱生豪。朱生豪在三十二岁上就译出了莎剧三十一种，莎翁地下有灵知道后都会惊愕万分的。莎翁写出他的第一个剧本《亨利六世》时二十六岁（一五九○年），而最后一个剧本《亨利八世》则是在他年近五十岁时（一六一二年）写出来的，创作时间跨度为二十二年。仅以这二十二年的人生体验计，要尽可能贴近真实地理解并翻译成另一种美丽的文字，只能说是朱生豪的悟性，或者就是他与莎翁的一种默契。

朱生豪英年早逝是不幸的。但从人生能有几多运道的角度看，他可算应运而生——应中国汉语发展的运道。中国白话文冠冕堂皇地登堂入室，始于五四新文化运动。生于一九一二年的朱生豪赶上汉语白话文从不成熟走向成熟的整个过程。他的家庭出身让他打下了扎实的古文功底，新文化运动又使他的白话文得到充分的发展。他写过诗，写过杂文，白话文的使用远远高出一般人。他翻译莎剧与其说选择了散文，不如说选择了极其口语化的白话文风格。这对翻译莎士比亚戏剧是极其重要的一个载体，是传统的典雅的文言文根本无法承载的。现在我们提及朱生豪的《莎剧集》译本，笼统地称之为“散文”译本，而实际上其中有大量非常经典的诗歌翻译。选其一首欣赏一下。

莎士比亚的写作究竟是怎样的形式，不妨听听英国学者的声音。比如，英国当代著名莎学家罗勃・格拉汉姆在他的《莎士比亚》的《前言》里谈到莎士比亚的写作时，这样写道：

这种写作前无古人，后无来者。他应有尽有：诗句，形象，情节，诗歌，幽默，韵律，深入细致的心理和哲学见解，所创造的隐喻，极尽思想和感情的优美和力量。然而，莎士比亚并非为后世写作；他不得不为取悦观众而写。正因如此，他的写作既有独白、洋洋洒洒的演说，又有插科打诨、出口伤人甚至不折不扣的胡说八道。他借用故事不分地点，不论国界（有些故事显然不值一借）。他笔下的人物可以俗不可耐，也可以口无遮拦，夸夸其谈，或者呼天抢地，狂泻怒斥。然而，他用心写，用才智写，用理智写，写得雄辩，写出风格。

这段文字道出了莎士比亚的既博大与精深，也庞杂与通俗。目前不少人把莎剧当作典雅的译事来做，把莎士比亚的语言当作优美的文体，以为只有用诗体译才能接近莎士比亚，这显然是一种片面的看法。莎士比亚的戏剧写作用了近三万个单词的词汇量（一般作家充其量五六千），而且为了更富于表达力，他独创了一种属于自己的英语表达形式。用英国当代文艺批评家科里・贝尔的话说：“介乎马洛与琼生两者之间，莎士比亚创造了英语的想像力，把这种语言发挥到了表达力的极致……他写出了无韵诗（亦称素体诗）——不加韵的短长格五音步诗行——一种具有无限潜力的媒质。”

面对这样一位富有创造精神的莎士比亚，任何所谓亦步亦趋的翻译实践，都会让他的剧作大打折扣，既存不了形，又求不了神。莎士比亚一生都在寻求突破，有些剧本全用散文体写作（如《温莎的风流娘儿们》），而有的剧本几乎全用无韵诗写就（如《朱利乌斯・恺撒》），而有的剧本段落又会使用古老的经典韵律诗，我们没有任何理由再用一个什么刻板的尺寸来翻译他的作品。这是违反莎士比亚精神的。朱生豪显然26

领悟到了这些，因此他在《全集》的《译者自序》里写了一段类似宣言的文字：

余译此书之宗旨，第一在求于最大可能之范围内，保持原作之神韵；必不得已而求其次，亦必以明白晓畅之字句，忠实传达原文之意趣；而于逐字逐句封照式之硬译，则未敢赞同。凡遇原文中与中国语法不合之处，往往再四咀嚼，不惜全部更易原文之结构，务使作者之命意豁然呈露，不为晦涩之字句所掩蔽。每译一段竟，必先自拟为读者，察阅译文中有无暧昧不明之处。又必自拟为舞台上之演员，审辨语调之是否顺口，音节之是否调和。一字一句之未惬，往往苦思累日。

显然，朱生豪在探寻一种最大程度上翻译出莎剧的汉语文体。中国的戏剧是唱，而外国戏剧是说。既然是说，那就万万不可脱离口语。因此，他译出了汉语版莎剧的风格，那便是口语化的文体。这是一种很了不起的文体，剧中角色不管身份如何，都能让他们声如其人；人物在喜怒哀乐的情绪支配下说出的十分极端的话，同样能表达得淋漓尽致。例如《哈姆莱特》第四幕第五场中，雷欧提斯因为父亲在宫中突然被哈姆莱特误杀，怒气冲冲地来找国王算账。他破门而入，对左右说：
