Gander’s Furniture Store

Stamford, Connecticut, 09876

Dear Sir,

I am writing about your November bill, which I am returning with this letter. I am not going to pay this bill. Last month I bought a table and four chairs for $65.50. They were sent to me on October 18. That night one leg of the table broke while my wife was putting our dinner on it. It fell on one of the chair, and that broke, too. Our $ 2.50 steak landed on the floor, and the dog ate it.

I spoke to the salesmen who had sold me the table and the chairs. He told me to write you a letter. I wrote you on October 20, saying that I was not going to pay for the furniture. On October 21 some men came and took it back to the store.

Please do something about your records. I do not want to receive another bill for the furniture which I returned. th

Yours truly

In the fall of 1985. I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.

My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college an the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.

Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopt and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic---and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.

You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 18. Our home was a complete zoo---a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant talking as few as one class each semester.

The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, But I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.

In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!

I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember;little steps add up to big dreams.

24. Why did the author quit school in her second year of college?

A. She wanted to study by herself. B. She fell in love and got married.

C.She decided to look after her grandma. D. She suffered from a serious illness.

25. What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 4 and 5? D. calm.

A. She was busy yet happy with her family life. B. She ignored her guilty feeling for her sons.

C. She wanted to remain a full-time housewife. D. She was too confused to make a correct choice.

26. What dose the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A. Failure is the mother of success. B. Little by little ,one goes far.

C. Every coin has two sides. D. Well begun ,half done.【

27.Which of the following can best describe the author ?

A. Caring and determined. B. Honest and responsible.

C. Ambitious and sensitive. D. Innocent and single-minded.

The summer of 2012 was full of reports of extreme weather: one of the warmest years on record in the US, the wettest summer in the UK, and the worst drought (旱灾) in East Africa. In short, extreme weather seems to be becoming the new normal. Weather extremes are not that extreme any more. Heatwaves, droughts and wildfires are the new reality of a warming world.

And this should not come as a surprise. Scientists have been warning for years that as the planet heats up, we will have to deal with more dreadful weather. Although not every extreme weather event is the result of climate (气候) change, scientists are now much more confident about connecting weather events with climate change. In 2011,the UK had a warm November. Researchers say that it was at least 60 times more likely (可能的) to happen because of climate change than because of natural changes in the earth’s weather systems (系统).

All the news shows that climate breakdown is occurring faster than most climate scientists had expected. But isn’t it too expensive to stop the climate from changing? Well, yes it costs. So everything is just as usual. It would be wrong to believe that to let things continue as they always do is the cheap choice. Instead, it is very expensive. Just one example: droughts in the US, Russia and the Ukraine sent food prices to a record high. According to the World Bank, the price for corn (玉米) increased by 113% in some markets in Mozambique and in Sudan. This is the kind of cost that often gets ignored.

I believe intelligent climate action can help create new opportunities for job in Europe, for encouraging creativity and competitiveness, for spending less money on energy.

28. The underlined word “dreadful” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “ ”.

A. lovely B. terrible C. seasonable D. freezing 29. The author mentions the increase of food prices in Paragraph 3 to .

A. show a lot of people are hungry

changing

C. prove food prices are very changeable D. prove we’re paying for extreme weather

30. Which of the following statements does the author probably agree with?

A.It’s everyone’s duty to protect the environment. B. Europe is providing limited job opportunities. B. show it’s expensive to stop the climate from

C. Proper climate action will be useful. D. Everyone needs time to get used to extreme weather.

31. In which part of a magazine can we find the text?

A. Nature. B. Economy. C. Politics. D. Tourism.

When her five daughters were young, Helene An always told them that there was strength in unity (团结). To show this, she pick up one chopstick, taking it as one person. Then she easily broke it into two pieces. Next, she tied several chopsticks together, taking them as a family. She showed the girls it was hard to break the tied chopsticks. This lesson about family unity stayed with the daughters as they grew up

Helene An and her family own a large restaurant business in California. However, when Helene and her husband Danny left their home in Vietnam in 1975, they didn't have much money. They moved their family to San Francisco. There they joined Danny's mother, Diana, who owned a small Italian sandwich shop. Soon afterwards, Helene and Diana changed the sandwich shop into a small Vietnamese restaurant. The five daughters helped in the restaurant when they were young. However, Helene did not want her daughters to always work in the family business because she thought it was too hard.

Eventually the girls all graduated from college and went away to work for themselves, but one by one, the daughters returned to work in the family business. They opened new restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Even though family members sometimes disagreed with each other, they worked together to make the business successful. Daughter Elisabeth explains, "Our mother taught us that to succeed we must have unity, and to have unity we must have peace. Without the strength of the family, there is no business.”

With three generations of Ans working together, now the Ans' business makes more than $20 million each year. Although they began with a small restaurant, they had big dreams, and they worked together. Now they are a big success.

32. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A. How to Run a Corporation Well B. Strength Comes from Peace

C. How to Achieve a Big Dream D.

Builds Success

33. What can we infer about the An’s daughters?
