1、Living in a Big City

Nowadays，more and more people rush into cities，especially big cities. They come for better jobs and better education，for information about the latest developments in science and technology，and for better medical care.

There are many reasons explaining this phenomenon. On the one hand，life in a big city is convenient，where you can enjoy fast public transport，a wide variety of goods and plenty of public places for enjoyment. On the other hand，the perfect health care system make you live in great comfort.

However，big cities are confronted with many problems. The biggest problem is the ever increasing population in the cities. It has resulted in crowded buses，traffic jams and poor housing conditions. Noise and pollution，mostly from factories and cars，are another two serious problem which damage people’s health.

2、How People Spent Their Holidays

As can be seen from the table，the past decade has witnessed dramatic changes in the way people spend their holidays during the years from 1990 to 2000. As early as in 1990，63% of people spent their holidays at home，while the figure dropped considerably to 24% in 2000. It is obvious from the table that people tended to be more and more mobile，and they wanted to get entertainment in the

outside world.

Several factors contribute to this phenomenon. To start with，with the rapid development of economy，people earn more money than they used to. Thus people are able to afford traveling expenses. Secondly，people think it important to get well-informed about the outside world in this new era when everything is on the move. Traveling，of course，is a sure way to achieve this goal. Finally，in this competitive society，people are usually under great stress，and traveling is an effective way to relieve people’s pressure and get relaxation.

In conclusion，people prefer to go traveling rather stay at home during holidays for a combination of reasons. Moreover，it seems that this trend will last in the foreseeable future.

3、Protection of Environment

No one can deny that the problem of environment has become more and more serious now. The world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources too quickly and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If wo continue to do this，human life on earth will not survive. It is the most valuable that we protect our environment.

There are mang things than man can do to protect our

motherland. First and foremost，government of many countries should establish more laws to protect the forest and sea resources and to stop the environment pollution. Besides，every country has to use modern methods of birth control and learn to recycle our natural resources. Last but not least，people should be further educated to realize the importance of environment protection.

We are sure that we shall have a better and cleaner planet in the future.

4、Choosing Careers

When it comes to choosing careers，the opinions between parents and children differ. Parents generally believe it is their responsibility to plan the careers for their children. They argue that they know their children well enough to decide what kind of job suits them. Many parents think that their children are too young to see their own potential.

But many children may not agree. In their views，they should be left free to choose their own careers. For one thing，parents and children may not share the same interest. A job that appeals to parents is likely to be boring for their children. For another，children have been brought up in a different age from their parents’. Therefore，children should be allowed to cultivate a spirit of independence and self-reliance.

In my opinion，mutual understanding is important. First，parents’ view does reflect their concern for their children. What’s more，after all it is children who will be doing the jobs. Therefore，it will be wise for parents to give them this freedom while children should consult their parents when it is necessary.

5、An Application Letter

6、Smoking

As is well known，smoking is harmful to our health. This is because tobacco contains some poisonous substances that hurt our bodies. Scientific studies show that cigarette smoking is one of the major causes of cancer，pneumonia and heart diseases. What’s more，smoking is not only harmful to smokers themselves，but also a threat to other people around them. So，we urge people to give up smoking.

Unfortunately，it is not easy to get rid of the bad habit. Many heavy smokers are so used to smoking that they feel depressed and uncomfortable without smoking cigarettes. Besides，people tend to put on weight after giving up cigarette because they turn to snacks as a substitute.

In order to protect non-smokers from the harm caused by cigarette smoking，efforts must be made reduce the chances of smoking. On the Overdependence of China’s College Students on Their Parents

In the United States, students generally seek an independent life at 18. They take on part-time jobs, live away from their parents, and finance their own education partially, if not completely. Upon graduation, they find a job, or launch their own business by filing for loans from the bank. They live in rented apartments even after marriage and buy a house only when they can afford it. This is a typical pattern how the American younger generation grows up.

By contrast, most college students in present-day China, as the sole children of their families, take for granted their excessive dependence upon their parents.
