Playing is serous business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them.

83 Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. They use their five senses to get know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight(视觉).

When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions.

Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be.

Crayons, paints and Play-Doh(彩色塑泥) are also good because they allow children to crate. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.

84 Playing doesn’t become any less important once children start school. Many valuable(有价值的) lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.

81. What can children do best in their childhood?

82. What kind of toys do children love?

In fact, it’s what they do best!”

难找到合适的答案“Toys to develop their imagination,/ teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.。

Lifelong Learning (终身学习)

In the past, when students graduated from college and got jobs, only some of them went on with their study. But today, lifelong learning is becoming more and more common (常见的).

Lucy, who is forty, teaches physics at a college in Boston. "Next term, I' ll teach some of my classes by using the Internet. This is the way of teaching that I've never used before," says Lucy. "These days, I am taking a class to learn how to teach in this way. If not, I will lose my job. "At the same time, Lucy' s seventy - year - old parents, who live in New York, are taking an art history class online. "We love this subject," says her father, "and we learn it to enjoy ourselves. You see we can study with people all over the world. What fun it is to learn like this!"

Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a Greek thinker, said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.

The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future —for example, getting into college or getting a good job —that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.

Another secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience this dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget about your problems, and only think about the activity. Finally, many people find happiness can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.

Chinese parents may look in the dictionary to name their kids. They decide on characters (汉字)that mean things like: health, happiness, beauty or cleverness. However, things are different in the US.

In America, it is an old tradition for men to give their own first name to their sons. This is not as common as it once was, though it still happens. For example, the US president (总统) George W. Bush 2

has the same name as his father, George H. W. Bush. When a father and a son have the same name, people usually call the son “junior”. Sometimes, there will be three or more generations(一代) of men with the same name. The grandsons and great-grandsons (曾孙) will be “George III”, “George IV” and so on.

These last few years, it is quite popular for Americans to name their kids after famous people. The most popular names, Daniel and Emma, both come from the names of the Harry Potter actors.

People are also thinking of new names all the time. For example, the NBA all-star LeBron James has a new and unusual name: LeBron. It is also common for people to name their children after things like “River”, “Apple” or “Star”.

有时表格中的最上栏或最左栏需要学生概括相应栏内的内容,常用的概括性词语有:原因(reason/cause)、方法(way/means)、优缺点(advantage/disadvantage)、观点(opinion/view)、建议(advice/tip/suggestions)、目的(aim/purpose)、问题(problem)、影响和结果(effect/result)、个人信息(name/age/occupation/personality)等。

About one hundred years ago, many educated people spoke French when they met people from other countries. Today most people speak English when they meet foreigners. It has become the new international language. There are more people who speak English as a second language than people who speak English as a first language. Why?

There are many reasons why English has become so popular. One of them is that English has become the language of business. Another important reason is that popular American culture, like movies, music, and McDonald‘s has quickly spread throughout the world. It has brought its language with it.

Is it good that English has spread to all parts of the world so quickly? I don't know. It‘s important to have a language that everyone has learn and it brings its culture with it. Do we really need that?

Scientists have already tried to make an artificial(人造的) language that isn't too difficult and isn‘t from any one group‘s culture. It is called Esperanto. But it hasn't become popular. Maybe the popularity of English won‘t last that long, either. Who knows? There are more people in the world who speak Chinese than any other language. Maybe someday Chinese will be the new international language.

81. What was the world language a century ago?

82. Why has English become an international language today? Give at least two reasons.

83. What can we get from Paragraph 3?

84. In the last paragraph, what do scientists want to tell us?

The volunteers then listened to each other‘s CDs and made guesses about

the CD creator‘s personality—outgoing, adventurous, happy, and so on. These strangers correctly guessed much more about each others‘ personalities through their CDs than through their clothes or taste in films. For example, Sue and Jim love punk music, which means they have outgoing personalities.

The psychologists who did the test found Snoop Dogg (hip-hop) fans are likely to be energetic and talkative. People who like U2 (rock/pop music) are generally independent and adventurous.

① so…that → too…to → enough to…
