Thinking About Thinking
As a public school superintendent (督导), I believe the best way to prepare students for colleges and careers is to focus on providing instructional programs and opportunities that help them become good thinkers. To do this, teachers and actually everyone else in a community, should play a role as a “cognitive coach” to students, helping develop good thinkers among your youth.
The best way for you to become a cognitive coach is to seek out and engage school children and adolescents in meaningful conversations. The objective here is to get kids talking about what they think, how they feel, and what they believe whenever and wherever you may find them. It may be in a classroom. It may be at the grocery store. It may be at a basketball game. It doesn’t matter where as long as you engage students in a topical conversation and, hopefully even a debate. Mainly, you want to encourage students to voice their opinion about things. Get them to take a position on “this thing, or that thing” and ask them to support their position with evidence. Curiously enough, the simple process of engaging students in real life conversations and debates will serve to strengthen what they have learned in the classroom, and help them create their own knowledge about a subject or a topic.
Learning indicates that a student has been exposed to material, understands the material, and can recall the information. Knowledge, on the other hand, goes beyond recall and includes information processing, application to other situations, consideration of meaning, and contrasting with other concepts. Naturally, the topic of conversation you engage in with one of your learners will differ from student to student, and in the level of complexity based on child’s age and developmental level. Even a kindergartener has an opinion about things that are going on in his or her life. Engaging in conversation with any members of your learning community in ways that get at what they have learned and what they know will help them develop higher order reasoning skills.
A student’s synthetic thinking (综合思维) process occurs when a respected adult asks a question, particularly a question that requires reflection. I think all adults
in a community have a responsibility to help children with this process, with the goal of producing independent thinkers.
24. According to the writer, what most helps develop students’ thinking?
A. Enlarging one’s knowledge. B. Learning from respected adults.
C. Attending instructional programs. D. Making evidence-based arguments.
25. Which is the best question raised by a cognitive coach?
A. What have you learnt recently?
B. Will you pay by the credit card?
C. Where are you going this weekend?
D. How do you like this basketball team?
26. The writer mentions a kindergartener in Paragraph 3 in order to __________.
A. emphasize the importance of being a good thinker
B. suggest that education should start at an early age
C. prove that even children have their own ways of thinking
D. explain the necessity of choosing proper conversation topics.【2016年湖北高考英语试卷】
27. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To state an education idea.
B. To assess a teaching strategy.
C. To introduce a learning method.
D. To compare different education methods.

Copycat Elephants
You may have seen a talking parrot on a TV show, in a movie, or even in someone's home. The parrot has learned to copy sounds that people make. Birds are not the only animals that can copy the noises they hear. Dolphins, bats, and some apes also copy sounds. Now we can add elephants to this list of copycats.
Dr. Joyce Poole is a zoologist. She studies the sounds of elephants. While she was in Kenya, she would hear strange noises made by Mlaika after sunset. Mlaika was a 10-year-old African elephant.
Mlaika lived near a highway. Dr. Poole says, "I could not tell the difference between Mlaika's call and the distant truck noise." She and other scientists studied Mlaika's sounds. It turned out that Mlaika was copying the sounds of the trucks driving by. Why would Mlaika copy trucks that she heard going by on the highway? Animals that are able to copy sounds may enjoy practicing new sounds. When they are kept outside of their natural environment, they may copy unusual sounds. That may be why an elephant would copy the sound of a truck.
"Mlaika was not the only copycat elephant," Dr. Poole says. Calimero is a 23-year-old male African elephant. He spent 18 years with two female Asian elephants. Asian elephants make chirping sounds (sounds made by birds) to talk with one another. African elephants usually do not make chirping sounds. But Calimero now does. He is copying his Asian elephant friends. Dr. Poole says that elephants need to form bonds with their family and friends. She says, "They make sounds to communicate with each other. When they are

They are the fashion statement loved by hip hop stars and rappers. But now it seems that grilles(金属网罩)—teeth jewellery loved by rappers such as Nelly—are not just about the way you look—you can use them to listen to music, too.
A design student has created a way of using the jewellery mouthpiece to hear songs by means of “bone conduction” through your skull.Aisen Chacin,of Parsons The New School for Design in New York, attached a vibrating(振动)motor to a digital music player and connected it to a mold(模子)of her upper teeth. She also placed controls on the underside so users can change songs or increase the volume by pushing up with your tongue. When the music starts, the vibration is strong enough that the music can be heard clearly—without the need for headphones. If the sound being played is loud enough, others can even hear it apparently coming out of your teeth.A video posted on YouTube shows one of Chacin's friends sitting down with the motor in his mouth and his hands in his ears.He didn't believe his eyes when he heard the music.
Grilles were made popular by the song by rapper Nelly even though dentists have made warnings against them. They say jewellery materials like gold or diamonds can wear down the enamel(牙釉质)on your teeth and that grilles should not be worn. Chacin showed her device, called Play-A-Grill,at the New Interfaces for Musical Expression conference last week. She said,“Grilles are almost always made of precious metal. They are completely removable, and almost used as a grill.Because the grill is worn over the teeth, sound can be spread using bone conduction hearing 1
