Ladies and Gentlemen , Good afternoon! I‟m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. today my topic is “youth”. I hope you will like it , and found the importance in your youth so that more cherish it.

First I want to ask you some questions:

1、 Do you know what is youth?

Youth

Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind ; it is not rosy cheeks , red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life .

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . Nobody grows old merely by a number of years . We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul . Worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust .

Whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being „s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what‟s next and the joy of the game of living . In the center of your heart and my heart there‟s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .

When the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80.

第一天：THE NEWSPAPER 报 纸

Nowadays the newspaper possesses considerable value Everybody should read it. It supplies us with a variety of news every day. It tells us the political situation of the world. If we form the habit of reading the newspaper, we shall (will) get enough knowledge to cope with our circumstances. 现今报纸拥有极大的价值，人人都应该看它。它每天提供我们各种类类的消息。它告诉我们世界政治局势。如果我们养成看报的习惯，我们就能得到足够的知识来因应我们的环境。 学生虽然每天须做功课，但他们至少应该匀出一两个小时来看报。哪些，他们不但能增加知识而且也能赶上时代。总而言之，看报对学生很有益处。

第二天：MY DAILY LIFE 我的日常生活

Though my daily life is extremely monotonous, I try hard to adapt myself to it. Why? Because I intend to be a good student. I wish to render service to my country.

I get up at six o’clock every day. After I wash my face and brush my teeth, I begin to review my lessons. I go to school at seven o’clock.

After school is over, I return home. We usually have supper at seven o’clock.

Then I begin to do my homework. I want to finish it before I go to bed.

Do you mind being called a bad student? Of course not. So far as I know, everybody intends to be (become) a model student.

However, to be a model student is by no means an easy thing. First, he must do his best to obtain knowledge. A man without sufficient knowledge will not succeed. Secondly, he must remember to improve his health. Only a strong man can do great tasks. Thirdly, he should receive moral education. If his conduct is not good, no one will consider making friends with him.

你价意被称为坏学生吗？当然不。就我所知，每个人都打算做模范学生。

There is no doubt that happiness is the most precious thing in the world. Without it, life will be empty and meaningless. If you wish to know how to get happiness, you must pay attention to the following two points.

First, health is the secret of happiness (the key to happiness). Only a strong man can enjoy the pleasure of life.

Secondly, happiness consists in contentment. A man who is dissatisfied with his present condition is always in distress.

无疑的快乐是世界上最宝贵的东西。没有它，人生将是空虚的而且毫无意义的。如果你希望知道如何获得快乐，你须注意下面两点。

健康是快乐的要诀。唯有身体强壮的人才能享受人生的乐趣。

快乐在于知足。一个不满于现状的人终是处在痛苦之中。

第五天：BOOKS 书籍

As is well known, books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things. They increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. In other words, they are our good teachers and wise friends. This is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books.

Reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books. It is true that we can derive benefits from good books. However, bad books will do us more harm than good. 如众所周知，书籍教我们学习人生，真理，科学以及其它许多有用的东西。它们增加我们的知识，扩大我们的心胸并加强我们的品格。换句话说，它们是我们的良师益友。这是为什么我们的父母终是鼓励我们要多读书的理由。

读书是一好事，但我们必须多加注意书的选择。不错，我们能从好书中获得益处。然而，坏书却对我们有害无益。

第六天：A TRIP TO THE COUNTRY 乡村游记

One Sunday my mother (Mother) had (made) me take my little young brother to the a trip to the country. She bade me take good care of him.

While we were walking along the road, the sun was shining brightly and the breeze was blowing gently. We saw the beautiful flowers smile (smiling) at us and heard the birds sing (singing) their sweet songs on the trees. The scenery was indeed very pretty (beautiful).

When we felt tired, we returned home. We saw Mother (our mother) wait (waiting) for us at the door.

有一个星期日，我母亲叫我带小弟弟去乡村游历。她吩咐我要好好照料他。

当我们沿着道路行走的时候，太阳灿烂地照耀着，微风轻轻地吹着。我们看见美丽的花儿对我们微笑着，并听见鸟儿在树上唱着悦耳的歌曲，风景实十分美丽。

当我们感觉到疲倦的时候，我们就回家了。我们看见母样正在门口等候我们。

第七天：BE PATRIOTIC 要爱国

It is the duty of every citizen to make the country rich and powerful (To make the country rich and strong is...). In order to accomplish this object one must be patriotic (love his country). I consider this an unchangeable truth.

How can a student love his country (be patriotic)? I find my answer very simple and clear. He must study hard and store up knowledge so as to serve his (the) country in the future. If every student can do according to what I said, the country will certainly be rich and powerful.

要使国家富强是每个公民的责任。为了达到此目的，必须爱国。我认为这是一条不易的定理。 一个学生如何才能爱国呢？我发觉答复很简单明了。他必须用功读书并积储知识以便将来服务国家。如果每个学生能按照我所说的去做，国家一定会富强。

第八天：THE VALUE OF TIME 爱惜时光

An English proverb says that time is money. I consider it (this) wrong. Why? Because we all know that we can earn money be work but can not in any way get back time (in anyway). For this reason, we may (can) say that time is more valuable than money.

Many people do not know the value of time. It (this) is indeed a great pity. We must bear (keep) in mind that wasting time is equal to wasting your life.

英国有句谚语说，时间就是金钱。我认为这是不对的。为什么？因为我们大家都知道我们能够用工作赚钱，但无论如何却无法把时间争取回来。基于此种理由，我们可以说时间比钱钱更宝贵。

If you want to ask me why we should study English, my answer will be simple and clear. Now let me enumerate the reasons one by one in the following.

In the first place, English has become an international language. If you know English, you van make a trip round the world without being misunderstood.

In the second place, most valuable books, newspapers and magazines are written in English. If you wish (hope) to get knowledge, you must learn English.

Yesterday was my birthday, so some of my classmates sent me presents. Mother prepared a tea party for me. I invited all of them to come and take part in it.

The tea party began at half past six. There were cold drinks and refreshments. We ate, talked and laughed. We felt that we were the happiest men in the world.

Time passed quickly. In a twinkling, the clock on the wall struck nine. We could not but say ―Good-bye‖ to one another.

Some of us always spend Sundays aimlessly. We can seldom derive profits from the valuable hours (time) of Sundays. This is indeed a great pity. Though Sundays are set aside as a day for rest, we must make good use of them.

We know that our school lessons are usually not sufficient. We should often utilize Sundays to read reference books. In this way we will increase our knowledge. Besides, we must be engaged in sports or outing so as to strengthen our bodies.

我们许多人终是把星期日毫无目的地消度掉。这确实是十分可惜。我们很少能从星期日的宝贵时光中获得益处。虽然星期日是被指定为一个休息的日子，但是我们却应好好利用它。 我们知道我们学校的功课通常是不够的。我们应时常利用星期日来阅读参考书。如此我们的知识就会增加了。此外，我们必须从事运动或郊游以便强壮我们的身体。

There is an English proverb which says (saying) ―Honesty is the best policy.‖ It signifies the importance of honesty.

What are the benefits of honesty? If you are honest to others, they will be honest to you in return. When you are sad, they will comfort you. When you are in trouble, they will help you.

There is no enumerating the evils of dishonesty here. In a word, a dishonest man will be looked down upon by others and (be) regarded as a public enemy.

英国有一句谚语说“诚为上策”。它说明了诚的重要性。

诚的益处是什么？如果你对他人诚实，他们也会对你诚实作为报答。当你忧悉的时候，他们会安慰你。当你是处在困难中的时候，他们会帮助你。

第十三天：HOW EXERCISE HELPS 运动的利益

If our bodies are not strong, our spirit to do things will certainly be quite dull. And at the same time, we are lack of energy (ies) to study. Diseases will only attack the weak, but not the strong. Why are our bodies not strong? Because we do not pay attention to exercise. For this reason, we students must often take different kinds (sorts) of exercise in the gym.

Exercise helps us (to) strengthen our bodies and avoid disease. It also teaches us cooperation, for most exercise is played by team.

如果我们的身体不强壮，我们做事的精神一定会十分迟钝。而且同时，我们也缺少足够的精力来读书。疾病只为侵击体弱的人而不是强壮的人。

为什么我们的身体会不强壮呢？因为我们不注意运动。基于此种理由，我们学生必须时常在运动场做不同种类的运动。

I am always interested in traveling. My reasons are quite (extremely) simple and clear. If anybody is not satisfied with my viewpoint(s), I shall be greatly surprised at his ways of thinking.

In the first place, traveling increases our knowledge. Only by traveling can we see （因为用（only）开头，主动词须颠倒）things outside our home town.

In the second place, traveling is good to our health. While we are traveling, we usually exercise our bodies.

In conclusion, I earnestly hope that everybody must seize (grasp at) the opportunity of traveling. 我对旅行终是感觉有趣。我的理由非常简单时了。如果任何人对我的观点不满意的话，我将对他的想法会大大吃惊。

旅行增加我们的知识。只有藉旅行我们可以看到我们故乡以外的东西。

第十五天：HOW TO BE A GOOD CITIZEN 如何做一个好公民

My aim is to become a good citizen so as to be able to render service to the (my) country. However, to become a good citizen is not an easy thing. He has many duties to fulfill.

The first duty of a good citizen is to love his country. He is to (must) be ready to sacrifice even his own life for the country.

His second duty is to obey the law and help the government (to) maintain order. If everybody can do so, the country will be rich and strong (powerful).

我的志向是做一个好公民以便能给国家效力。然而，做一个好公民不是一件容易的事情。他有许多责任要尽。

一个好公民第一件责任是爱他的国家。他须准备为国家牺牲自己的生命。

他第二件责任是服从法律并且帮助政府维持治安。如果人人都能这样做的话，国家必定富强。 第十六天：THE NATIONAL FLAG 国旗

it is the duty of every citizen to honor the national flag. Why? Because the national flag is the symbol of a (the) country. To respect it means to respect the country. In other words, if a man loves his country, he must love the national flag.

In school, the national flag is usually raised at a certain time every day. Then the principal, teachers, staff and students are to (must) stand before it and sing the national anthem. It is indeed extremely meaningful to attend such a ceremony.

尊敬国旗是每个公民的责任（义务）。为什么？因为国旗是国家的象征。尊敬它意思就是尊敬国家。换句话说，如果一个人爱国，他必须爱国旗。

第十七天：THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION 教育的重要性

It is impossible for us to make our country rich and strong without developing education. Why? Because education gives people knowledge and teaches them how to become good citizens so as to be able to serve their country. No wonder they say that education decides the progress, prosperity and civilization of a country.

At present (Nowadays) most countries in (of) the world are enforcing compulsory education. It is necessary for all kinds of people, both rich and poor, to receive education. Taiwan is an exception as well not.

我们不可能使我们的国家富强而不发展教育。为什么？因为教育给予人民知识并教他们如何成为好公民以便能为国家效力。难怪，有人说教育决定一个国家的进步，繁荣与文化。 现在世界大多数的国家都在实施强迫教育。所有各类人民不论贫富都必须接受教育。台湾也不例外。

第十八天：INDUSTRY (DILIGENCE) 勤勉

It is a matter of course that industry will bring us success, wealth and good luck. I am sure that a hard-working person can always succeed in the work which he wants to do. This is unchangeable truth.

Idleness is the opposite of industry. It is the source of all evil. An idle man only enjoys playing and making pleasures. That he is doomed to failure is of no doubt. We should not follow his example. 勤勉会带给我们成功，财富和好运乃是当然之事。我确信一个苦干的人终是能够做成功他所要做的工作。这是不易之定理。

第十九天：MY NATIVE TOWN 我的故乡

My native town is X. We have settled down here since my grandfather was a child. In other words, my family has lived here for more than one hundred years.

It is a small village. There are about one thousand inhabitants. Most of them are farmers. The mode of their living is very simple. However, they have already possessed television sets and refrigerators. They made up their minds to live a modern life.

我的故乡是X。我们自从祖父是小孩时，就定居在此地。换句话说，我们家人在此地已经住了一百余年了。

When I was six years old, I began to go to school. The first school (which) I attended was a primary school. My parents were quite proud of me.

On behalf of my colleagues, I wish to give my warm eongratulations on thc holding of the photo Exhibition "Scenery of Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan."

Talking of scenery and landscape, there are many similarities and contrasts between 中国 and Canada. Both have land masses that are among the world's largest. Both have some of the world' s most impressive mountains, rivers and lakes. But each has things that are special to itself. The Chinese are surprised by the fact that Canadian fur traders of the early years were actually able to sail on canoes from the Atlantic to the Pacific through thousands upon thousands of lakes spread out from eastern to western Canada, while Canadians find the mountains drawn by Chinese painters on scrolls utterly surreal. No Chinese visitors would leave Canada contented without seeing the'Niagara Falls.

No Canadian visitors to 中国 would feel satisfied just seeing the Great Wall without also touring the Three Gorges, for that matter.

The exhibition of scenery of Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan brings us to yet another world. To those who have been to 中国, it will provoke reminiscences and to those who have not been to 中国, it may prove to be an irresistible invitation.

Not wanting to bore you with my pale description, Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like you now to join me in marvelling at these works of art.

1.Be Polite 有礼貌

Everyone should be polite. Polite people show good manners. Moreover ,they are popular. On the other hand, rude people are looked down upon. Rudeness shows poor education. Therefore, why not be polite? A simple “Please,” “Thank you,” or “You are welcome,” can make a big difference.

2． Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day 聚沙成塔

Learning English is like building a house. Laying a strong foundation(n.地基 ) is the first and most important step. In other words, you should read and speak English every day. Memorizing new words and phrases in also helpful. Like building a house, learning English takes some time. So don’t be impatient(不耐烦的). Remember, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”.

3.Just Do It 马上去做

Many people put off until tomorrow what they can do today. They always look for excuses to postpone（拖延）doing something .In the end, it never gets done. If we leave things undone, we will eventually（最后） worry. This will then cause unnecessary stress（压力0. Therefore, if you have this bad habit, it’s best to get rid of it and do things as soon as possible.

4.A Balanced Diet 均衡饮食

Some people eat to live, but there are others who live to eat. To live a long and healthy life, we must learn to have a balanced diet. A balanced diet simply means a bit of everything. A diet which includes meat, fish, vegetables and fruit is, of course, ideal. If you watch your diet, then you won’t have to suffer the pain of going on a diet.

5.Be thoughtful 体谅人

Being thoughtful(体谅人)simply means thinking of others before yourself. What you say or do will have an effect on others. So it is important that you think before you say or do anything. In this way, you can avoid hunting other’s feelings. Moreover, a thoughtless act or remark can spoil a perfect relationship.

Remember these rules. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything. Likewise, if you think what you do will hurt others, don’t do it. After all, what goes around comes around.(种什么因，得什么果)。

6． Health Comes First 健康第一

Smoking is bad in that it is harmful to one’s health. In spite of the fact that doctors have even warned that it causes canner, people still keep on smoking.

In some western countries, however, people are beginning to kick the bad habit. They realize that health should come first. To help them quit

smoking, there are laws against cigarette advertising and smoking in public places. This is praiseworthy except that western countries are now selling cigarettes in the East in greater numbers than ever. That they are doing this is immoral, don’t you think?

7.Don’t Rely on Luck运气不可靠

Passing exams is every student’s dream. Failing them is their nightmare. So, to realize their dreams, many students try anything. They even go to fortune tellers, buy lucky charms and follow old customes.

In Korea(朝鲜)，many students bury something personal in the university they want to enter. They believe that these things will act as magnets and “pull” them into the university. Whether it works or not, nobody really knows. At least it does ease the students’ minds about passing exams. Remember, though, you can’t always rely on luck. There is no substitute for hard work.

8.A Sense of Security 安全感

Some people take the view that something in life we have to take chances in order to make progress. I admire such people. It certainly takes courage to take risks. Maybe it’s due to my upbringing, but I am the type who likes to play it safe.

People like me believe in the saying, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Conservative as it may be, it keeps me out of trouble. I must confess, however, that such a lifestyle may, at times, be boring.

Admittedly, my life is not half as colorful or exciting as other people’s, but at least it gives me a sense of security.

I wonder how many accidents I‟ve had in my life. I‟ve had a few serious ones where I‟ve ended up in hospital. Traffic accidents are the worst. They‟re always painful. Big airports are almost like small towns. It seems like you walk across a town by the time you check in and get to your departure gate. The thing I like most about airports is people watching. There are people from all over the world. I also like how everything fits and works together. You check your luggage in and then it disappears, before you see it again at the next airport. I still think airports need improving. There‟s not a lot to do there. Airports really need to have an entertainment area so people can kill time.

I hate alcohol. I really don‟t understand how or why people drink it. The smell of alcohol on people‟s breath is disgusting. It‟s expensive and it gives you a bad headache. I drank when I was much younger, but I haven‟t touched a drop for years. I hated hangovers so I decided to stop drinking altogether. I have a much better time without alcohol. people say they need to drink to relax. They drink and just act and look stupid. Their face goes red and they can‟t walk in a straight line. Alcohol is also the most damaging drug in society. That‟s what I think, anyway. Alcohol causes many illnesses, traffic accidents, fights and domestic violence. If you banned alcohol, people would be healthier, richer and have a better family life.

There are aliens out there, somewhere. I strongly believe this. Not sure what they look like, though. I really doubt they are green, like they are in science fiction movies. I also don‟t think they look like us. But I‟m sure they exist. I just don‟t think we‟ll ever see any or find any. They live too far away. If you think about it logically, there has to be aliens out there. All a planet needs is to be warm and have water and life will exist. There are billions and billions of planets in the universe, so there are probably millions and millions that have life. Alien life. It‟s also likely that some of the aliens are much more intelligent than we are. I wonder what we‟d do if really intelligent aliens visited Earth. What would we ask them?

I‟m a real animal lover. I‟m fascinated by the whole animal kingdom. I loved animals when I was a kid. I used to read every book I could find on animals. I knew all the different animal species. The most exciting thing for me was going to the zoo. I would spend hours just watching the animals walk around, sit, or even sleep. When I was older, I went on a safari to Tanzania. I saw real wild animals in the wild. Everyone should do this once in their lives. Looking at animals in their natural habitat is a real honour. Now I‟m worried about the future of many animals. Some of my favourite animals are in danger of dying out. We really need to change our lifestyle so our children can have the chance of seeing animals in the wild.

I‟m not the world‟s biggest fan of banks. I‟ve had too many bad experiences of them. I really don‟t know how they can advertise and say they look after you. They don‟t. Bank charges are way too high; you spend ages waiting to be served; and then they say no if you want a loan. The bank I bank with makes dozens of mistakes with my account. The thing they‟re best at is making excuses. I‟m not at all surprised so many banks did badly in the credit crisis. I hope they change. Bankers get far too much money. All they do is desk work. Banks need to focus a lot more on real customer service. At the moment banks only offer an excuse for customer service. They don‟t even offer you a drink when you sit down and open an account.

I‟m a great art lover. I look at beautiful paintings and sculptures and wish I could be artistic. I can‟t draw or paint to save my life. I wonder why some people are so talented and can create amazing pictures, when other people, like me, can‟t even draw good matchstick figures. I would like to fill my house with art from all over the world. It‟s interesting to see how different cultures have different kinds of art. There‟s nothing better than visiting art galleries when you go to another

museum but can‟t see how it‟s art. I always laugh when my children say, “Daddy, I can do better than that!” I often think they can.

Autumn is such a cool time of the year. Of course it is cool because the temperatures drop after summer. But it is also cool because it‟s such a great time of the year. I love the changing of the leaves. The different autumn colours are one of nature‟s most beautiful scenes. Sometimes I can‟t stop looking at the mountains near my house. They are like an artist‟s palette of golds, reds, yellows, browns and other autumnal colours. In America they call autumn „fall‟ because that is when the leaves fall from the trees. I like the coolness of autumn. Summer is over but you can still wear a T-shirt – just about. You can also spend hours outdoors without sweating. Autumn is the best time of the year to go hiking and go for long walks.

When I was even younger, I liked it when my babysitter came round. She would always play games with us and let us stay up late. She would send us to bed just before my parents came home. I know in some countries, babysitting isn‟t so common. It isn‟t part of the culture. I suppose that‟s not such a bad thing. I read a lot in the papers nowadays about babysitters hitting the children because they don‟t sleep. That‟s really bad.

Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. As we all know, communication is one of the most essential social skills that we need for our self development. Communicating with all

understanding always contributes to a deep touch between peoples' heart. Today, I am going to talk about how to communicate with classmates. To start with, you need to realize that your classmates are just in the same age of you. So be relaxed and nature. You are not too much smarter or outstanding than others and either are they! When you talk with them, remember to mention something popular, like music, or game, and don't forget to be humorous even kind of funny which can build a harmonious atmosphere to promote the relationship.

Additionally, after you get close to each other enough, add some topics related to yours goals and plans for the future. I would like to say it is important to talk about that since young people always have beautiful dream and wish to company each other to accomplish them. In that way, you will become real friends with mutual understanding.

The last but also most important, I suggest you to be patient to hear other. They may complain something which you believe is unreasonable or they may abuse someone you actually like. When it goes that way, never argue with them. Listen to their opinion and state your viewpoint later softly. And remember it will make people, even the very nice ones; feel more or less uncomfortable if you say that they are wrong directly.

How I wish to live a house surrounded by limpid water! From the windows of the house you could see the clear water flowing by. And the fresh smell of the water could make you forget a day’s hard work and feel vigorous again. And the limpid water could bring us green trees, pleasant grass and colorful flowers. Yes, it is like a beautiful drawing. Yes, it is my good dream!
