Many people in the world are trying to find a perfect companion. Some of these may marry and not know what their new husband or wife is like. This kind of situation often leads to separation or hostility. Other situations may develop between two friends that stem from jealousy, desire for revenge, uncaring parents, etc. Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights displays several characteristics of destructive relationships. Three of these are uncaring parents, marriage without knowing the person, and jealousy.

Uncaring or unsympathizing parents are shown throughout this story to be an element of destructive relationships. Because Heathcliff gained all the attention from Mr. Earnshaw, Hindley became disassociated from his father. This separation continued until after Mr. Earnshaw had died.Another example is between Hindley and Hareton. Hindley became such a drunk and a gambler that he could not properly care for young Hareton. This led to a separation between Hareton and his father as well. One primary example of an uncaring parent is shown between Heathcliff and his son Linton.Heathcliff did not even want his son for anything except enacting a part of his revenge. This is shown by Linton's fear of Heathcliff and Heathcliff's enmity toward his son. Linton even says "... my father threatened me, and I dread him - I dread him!"(244) to express his feeling about Heathcliff. The hostility and separation between father and son in this book shows that uncaring parents can cause serious damage in relationships with their children.

This element of destructive behavior may stem from an unhappy marriage in which the husbands or wives don't know each other. This had happened between Isabella and Heathcliff. Isabella did not really know Heathcliff when she married him, but after she had married him she saw that Heathcliff was not a gentleman at all. To declare her feelings she wrote "Is Heathcliff a man? If so, is he mad? And if not, is he a devil? I shan't tell my reasons for making this inquiry; but I beseech you to explain, if you can, what I have married ..."(125). Another example of this is when Catherine married Edgar Linton. Although she had been happy at the beginning of the marriage, she thought having parties all the time was going to be fun. Yet, after a while, she became bored. She also realized that she loved Heathcliff more than Edgar and would always love Heathcliff. This

enlightenment created separation between Edgar and Catherine during the final hours of Cathy's life. An additional marriage which was made that was doomed was the one between Catherine and Linton. Because this was a forced marriage, Cathy had not yet learned all she could about Linton.Because she did not know until after the marriage that Linton was selfish and inconsiderate, she became distressed and grew isolated in the house. These three failed marriages described in this novel show that knowing the person you will marry is very important. While these marriages took place, jealousy also took a hold in some relationships. One example of this is when Mr. Earnshaw starts to favor Heathcliff over his own son, Hindley. Because of this, Hindley becomes jealous of young Heathcliff and sets out to make Heathcliff's life a nightmare. Hindley's jealousy becomes evident when he says ,"... be damned you beggarly interloper! and wheedle my father out of all he has; only afterwards show him what you are, imp of Satan."(35). Jealousy was also found very notably in the relationship between Heathcliff and Edgar Linton.

The jealousy between them is expressed when Heathcliff and Edgar start a hostile conversation after Cathy's homecoming at Christmas near the beginning of the book. As the story progresses these two become bitter enemies who will not speak to one another. Another relationship which jealousy ruined is the one between Hareton and Linton. These two become jealous of each other over Cathy's affections. This relationship ends as Hareton and Linton hating each other. These relationships show that jealousy can ruin a relationship very quickly.

We saw a film which named Wuthering Heights this afternoon. After seeing it, I felt for Heathcliff at first. He begins his life as a servant in villa. He has a very happy childhood. Played with Catherine, he falls in love with her. Because of his poorness, Catherine marries with a rich man. With heart lost, he leaves. When he returns, he changes a lot. Being rich and gentle, he swears to take his revenge on Catherine and her family. He buys the Wuthering heights. In order to make Catherine sad, he marrys with her husband’s sister. However, not only Catherine but also Isabella Linton—Catherine’s sister—in—law is suffering . then they die one by one. In my opinion, heathcliff falls too deep in love so that he can’t see the world clearly. Firstly, he shouldn’t have married with Isabella if he doesn’t love her. Secondly, he should have treated her as his wife as possible as he can to let Catherine away from his world. But, what I can say is , love is indigestible. Facing reality, love is always seak. It has no power to fight. Most we hope, love can fight against everything. We shouldn’t make the same mistake like Catherine and Heathcliff.

I feel much sympathy for Isbella. Beautiful as her, passionate as her, ultimately, she ruins her life by falling in love with Heathcliff. He never returns her feelings and treats her as a meretool in his quest for revenge on the Linton family. As a young girl, begins setting foot in love, it is easy to love a gentle man like Heathcliff. She is enough brave to pursue her love and undertake the result. It touches my heart so nearly when I see her ask her

husband whether he can give a little love to her with tear. She is above reproach. She losts her love and her family in this villa. She tries to give battle to the reality, she fails. The courage encourages me very much. And living on after failing, not as Catherin’s escaping, she is the best. Catherin is the major role of the story.I really can’t understand her action. I know that she loves Heathcliff, because of wealth she marries with a rich man. We can says her irresponsible action is the source of all tragedies. She is attracted by Linton but doesn’t love him. She knows that clearly but she marries Linton without

listening to the call of her heart. Many critics believe that what makes her marry Linton is only his high social status and wealth. I think this comment is unfair. In fact,

she folly thinks to marry Linton will help Heathcliff “to rise and place him out of my brother’s power.” Her decision ruins herself, Heathcliff and the two families. What I want to say is that love is wonderful, and it also needs our efforts to let it go. The important thing is doing everying with listening to the call of her heart.

In this summer, I read another book Wuthering Heights. Wuthering Heights is written by Emily Bronte. After reading that book, the love and the hatred between Catherine and Heath Cliff still linger in my head.

The story begun with a mistake that made by Lockwood, a temporary resident. He is seeking shelter from the blizzard he staggers through the door of Wuthering Heights, finding the atmosphere inside is just as cold as ice. The master of the house, Heath Cliff, provides a bed reluctantly and it seems like that he feels ill at ease with his visitor’s coming. There's a sad tale behind his indifference, one which the elderly housekeeper Nelly Dean is happy to share.

Forty years ago, Wuthering Heights was filled with light, warmth and happiness. Mr.Earnshaw, a congenial gentleman farmer, lives happily with his boisterous children Cathy and Hindley. However, being a kind and generous fellow, he can't help rescuing a poor starving wretch off of the streets of Liverpool, a gypsy child named Heath Cliff. In time Heath Cliff becomes one of the family, loved by all people except Hindley, the son of Mr.Earnshaw . Cathy is an especially good childhood friend, spending many a happy day playing on the moor with Heath Cliff. Unfortunately Mr.Earnshaw dies suddenly; Hindley is able to express his enmity with damning cruelty. In order to air his grievance, he reduced Heath Cliff to a servant.

Later, Catherine is forced to marry Edgar. Heath Cliff’s heart is broken, so he leaves Wuthering Heights. After three years, he comes back to Wuthering Heights with wealth. Catherine has married Edgar, but not happiness. Heath Cliff begins to revenge crazily. He takes away Hindley’s belongings by gambling. Then, Hindley gets drunk and die, his son Hareton became slaves. Heath Cliff also marries Edgar's sister Isabella deliberately and persecute her in all the ways. Catherine is miserable inside and then dies of dystocia. Ten years later, Heath Cliff makes Edgar’ daughter Catherine marry to his dying son Linton. Edgar and small Linton dies, Heath Cliff owes Edgar’s property finally. Heath Cliff revenges successfully, but he couldn’t stop missing the dead Catherine, and then he dies. Small Catherine and Hareton inherit all

the property and they finally fall in love with each other.

Actually, there isn’t such a character that I really like in Wuthering Heights. Every character seems teemed with agony and animosity, especially Heath Cliff. Heath Cliff is an orphan before Mr. Earnshaw adopts him, and in the novel, Mr. Earnshaw treats Heath Cliff even nicer than his own son, Hindley Earnshaw. It’s quite amazing that in spite of Earnshaw’s nice treatment, Heath Cliff has no gratitude at all, he revenged Hindley and Catherine, even their heirs. After reading Heath Cliff’s story, my feeling is complicated, although he is the avenger who dominate the whole story by using his vengeful machinations, he is also the most pitiful guy in Wuthering Heights; he doesn’t know what is love and don’t know how to love. Heath Cliff has lived with the Earnshaws for more than 10 years, but there is no attachment between him and the whole family except Catherine. However, even Catherine was died because of Heath Cliff’s torture. When he is torturing others, he is also giving himself a suffering.

Catherine, the heroine in the book, is described as a capricious and selfish girl. She is just like Heath Cliff, doesn’t know how to love at all.

Anyway, Wuthering Heights left an indelible impression on me, cold and withering. However, at the end of the book, the author shows us that the human being’s kindness is not diminished at Wuthering heights, even though the wind can break off a tree, that doesn’t mean it can break off the whole forest. Even though hatred destroyed Heath Cliff, Catherine, Edgar and Elizabeth’s happiness, that doesn’t mean Cathy and Hareton’s happiness.

I spent twenty days reading this book. After reading this book, Wuthering Heights is a story of love and hatred. Many of the comments concentrate mainly on the human nature shown in the book, both on the pleasant and desperate side. Nevertheless after finishing the book, the most impressive to me is Heathcliff. In the novel, the author of all efforts concentrated on the image portrayed Heathcliff, she pinned his own where all the outrage, compassion and ideals. This has been deprived of human warmth of the outcast in real life to cultivate a strong love and hate, Hindley's whip so that he tasted the cruelty of life, but also he knows how to swallow the insult in the Church of yield can not change the destiny of their own humiliation. He chose resistance. Catherine used to be his faithful partner, They in the common resistance in the germination of sincere love. However, Catherine Heathcliff eventually betrayed, married she did not understand, it does not love Edgar Linton. Cause of this love tragedy is the direct cause of her vanity, ignorance and stupidity, the result is ruin his own youth, love and life, but also ruined her has always been devotedly attached to Heathcliff, but also came close to harm the next generation. Emily Bronte portrayed in this figure, there are sympathetic, they are angry; are sorry, there are flogging; both sorrow for their misfortunes, but also Nuqibuzheng mood is extremely complex. Catherine's betrayal of their miserable fate of marriage is the most significant turning point in the book. It makes Heathcliff filled with immense love into hate; Catherine's death, this chamber burst out like a volcano of hatred has become a crazy revenge motivation.

Heathcliff objective was achieved, he not only made Hindley and Edgar miserable death, to dominate the two industrial estates, but also the innocent for no reason the next generation so that they also suffered a bitter defeat. This crazy revenge Xiehen, seemingly perverse in common sense, but most vividly expressed his extraordinary spirit of rebellion, which is a special environment, special character, determined by the specific resistance. Heathcliff's love tragedy is a social tragedy, the tragedy of the times. "Wuthering Heights" Heathcliff is a story of revenge to achieve the purpose of committing suicide had ended. His death is a kind of sentimentalism, expressed his enduring love of life and death of Catherine, a coverlet of Health can not be dead, is also seeking the pursuit of love with the hole. Before dying he gave up the idea of revenge in the next generation found that he had a good nature, but because of the harsh realities of his twisted nature, forcing him to become ruthless tyranny. The recovery of this human nature is a kind of spiritual sublimation, shines with authors of humanitarian ideals. "Wuthering Heights" after the publication has been considered to be in English literature in the history of a "most peculiar novel," is a "mystery" and "strange books." Because it is a contemporary work against the prevailing mood of sentimentalism, but with a strong love, hate and violent replaced by the ruthless revenge, instead of deep sorrow and melancholy. The whole story make people’s mood heavy. Fortunately, the end is happy.

Brief Introduction Wuthering Heights

The book I read is named Wuthering Heights, whose author is an English famous writer, Emily Bronte. It was published by Air Factory Press in 2004. The book has 207 pages.

Main Contents

The story is about Heathcliff's revenge. In the north part of England, there lied Wuthering Heights. Its host, Earnshaw adopted a orphan named Heathcliff . Earnshaw let him live with Hindley and Cathy. Soon Cathy lost her heart to him while Hindley hated him very much. After the old Earnshaw died, Hindley became the host of Wuthering Heights. Cathy married rich and handsome Edgar. After Heathcliff knew about the news, he left angrily.

Several years later, a handsome man with fine clothes appeared in Thushcross Grange. It was Heathcliff. His only aim was to take revenge. Hindley began into drink every day. When Hindley saw Heathcliff came back, he let him live there. Heathcliff took advantages of his bad habits to rob his wealth. Healthcliff tempted Edgar’s sister to marry him, but he was unkind to her. Soon she left him and bore a boy named Linton. Cathy produced little Cathy, dead. After Isabella was dead, Little Linton came to his father’s house. Heathcliff forced little Linton and little Cathy to get married. Soon little Linton was dead. Hareton Earnshaw and little Cathy loved each other. In the end Heathcliff died. The two people who loved each other got marriage. They came back to Thrushcross Grange and had a happy life. The story ended. Excellent episodes

1.Fog hung in the trees, and in the distance, large sharp, tall rocks called Penistone Crags rose up out of the ground.

2.We stared at them for a little while, and then made noises to frighten them, like ghosts.

3.She started out of the window, her eyes shining with happiness. There was no moon,

and everything outside was dark and quite.

4.He eyes didn’t shine and she didn’t laugh or take as she used to. Instead, she was quiet, and her eyes were soft. (P104)

5.Cathy’s face was like the land around her, with shadows and sunshine moving over it quickly. (P162)

6.The sweet young girl whom Ellen had known was gone. Cathy had turned angry and hard, like the girl Lockwood met. She was not afraid of Heathcliff and she fought with him and Hareton. The more she was hurt, the angrier and more hurtful to others. She became. She lived in a world of bad feelings. (P180)

7.A beautiful moon was shining in the sky. As I opened the gate and walked towards the door, the sweet smell of flowers was in the air. (P186)

8.A voice is as sweet as a bird’s.

9.Then was quiet, and seemed to forget that Ellen was there. She left him alone. She knew so much about him. She knew that Heathcliff’s sorrow and unlucky life, and his deep love for Catherine Earnshaw, had made his life a hell.

Reflection

When I read over the story, I feel happy. Heathcliff gave up hatred at last. I feel sorry for Healthcliff’s deeds. Catherine represents wild nature, lively spirits and her occasional cruelty. She loves Heathcliff so intensely that she claims they are the same person. However, her actions are driven in part by her social ambitions, which initially are awakened during her first stay at the Linton’s, and which eventually compel her to marry Edgar.Catherine is free— spirited, beautiful, spoiled, and often arrogant, she is given to fits of temper, and she is torn by herself and both of the men who love her.The location of her coffin symbolizes the conflict that tears apart her short life. She is buried in a corner of the Kirkyard. In contrast to Catherine,Isabella Linton—Catherine’s sister—in—law represents culture and civilization, both in her refinement and in her weakness.Ultimately, she ruins her life by falling in love with Heathcliff. He never returns her feelings and treats her as a tool in his quest for revenge on the Linton family.

Just as Isabella Linton serves as Catherine’s foil, Edgar Linton serves as Heathcliff’s. Edgar grows into a tender, constant, but cowardly man. He is almost the ideal gentleman. However, this full assortment of gentlemanly characteristics, along with his civilized virtues, proves useless in Edgar’s clashes with his foil. He sees his wife obviously in love with another man but unable to do anything to rectify the situation.

The whole story make people’s mood heavy. Fortunately, the end is happy. And when I think of his sadness and insult from others, I can show sympathy to him. Heathcliff lived a tired life. He should have a good life. He got married Isabella and had a son. If he was good to her and his son,he would have a happy family. He made use of many people to take revenge to ruin the lives of these people’s. At last he died. So we should have a wide heart. We should not live in hatred. Happiness is the most things in our lives.

Although Heathcliff did many bad things, he gave up forcing Cathy and Harleton to separate. People always think many deep loves are changed in to hatred but I believe in it that the world is still full of love.

A story of Love and Revenge

------The Impression of Wuthering Heights Wuthering Height, which was written by Emily Bronte’s, was published in 1847. The reason I chose this book is because the title attracted me.

The book was mainly about the love story between Catherine and Heathcliff. After reading the book, I thought a lot. As an orphan, Heathcliff started his life miserably. After being adopted by homeless Earnshaw his life changed. Soon after, he fell in love with Catherine. They would have led a happy life if Heathcliff were not looked down upon by Catherine’s brother. Fortunately, both Heathcliff and Catherine found their own love in the end.

However, there is still something I cannot fully understand. Many people in the world are trying to find a perfect companion. Some of them get married but don’t know what their new wife or husband is like. This kind of situation often leads to separation or hostility, just like Heathcliff and his wife, Esabella. When Esabella married Heathcliff, she didn’t really know Heathcliff, and after she married him she found that Heathcliff was not a gentle man at all. Another example of this is that Catherine married Edgar Linton. Although she had been happy at the beginning of the marriage because she thought having parties all the time was going to be fun, after a while, she became bored. She also realized

that she loved Heathcliff more than Edgar Linton, but at that time, it was no use to regret at all. Because of this, she lived a miserable life and died after she gave birth to her little baby. From these tragedies, we know how important it is to choose the right soul mate from a right attitude towards marriage.

After reading this story, I was touched by several parts. The first is about LOVE. There are two kinds of love in this story -- Pure and Selfish. Pure love can bring happiness to us, but selfish love can ruin a person. The second is about HATE. I deeply feel that hate is a horrible thing. Hate makes the world dark. Hate makes people forget the happy and beautiful things around them. If it can’t be dealt with well, it would influence the next generation. The last is the attitude towards things. Different attitudes produce different results. We can learn that from the different ending of Catherine and. We can see how important a positive attitude is.

Love is everlasting, but hatred is not. What we should do is insist onpure love and don’t let the hatred blind our eyes.
