Passage A

Do you know Roma people? They were called Gypsies(吉普赛人) by Europeans because they thought they came from Egypt(a country in Africa). About a thousand years ago, the Roma people left their homeland. They are known as nomads because for hundreds of years many of them have lived in large groups that travel from place to place. They have no real homeland.

Today, the Roma are now living all over the world. They have kept their language and many customs. For example, it's important for Roma to marry other Roma. It's also a custom for parents to choose the person their children will marry. Roma people get married when they are young, sometimes even as young as 14.

Romany is the language of Roma people, which was written down only recently. Because the Roma are nomadic and have moved all over the world, their language has developed in many different ways. It is sometimes hard for Romans in one part of the world to understand Romans from another part.

Roma music is famous all over the world, because many Romans throughout history have been

musicians. Their music has influenced many other kinds of music, like classical and jazz.

Roma don't usually assimilate(同化) into host countries. Over many centuries, governments have forbidden them to marry each other, travel or wear their traditional bright clothes. They have their gold taken away from them—treasures from their parents and grandparents. They have been taken as slaves(奴隶), and have been forced to change their names.

But today, the Roma are finding ways to live in peace with others while keeping the treasures of their culture. “There's a will within us to continue to live as a people,” says George Kaslov, whose family arrived in New York from Russia a hundred

years ago. “All the other ethnic(种族) groups who came to America assimilate gradually with time going; they lose their customs and language. But not the Roma. We hold out.”

32. What does the underlined word "nomads" in the 1st paragraph mean?

A. People who lived centuries ago. B. People who come from Roma.

C. People who have their own homeland D. People who move from place to place.

33. What can we infer about the Roma according to the passage?

A. Most of the Roma live in very unusual houses.

B. Their language is endangered and may soon die out.

C. Their culture is very different from other European cultures.

D. Most Roma get married either when they are very young or very old.

34. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To tell readers about an interesting culture. B. To tell us why the Roma need our help.

C. To show us how all people are similar. D. To ask people how to live in peace.

35. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Brave Roma Travelers B. Famous Roma Music

C. The Roma: Past and Present D. Changing Countries, Changing Cultures 参考答案32—35、DCAC

Dear Amy,

I couldn’t read your two e-mails until today because my computer was broken. I’m sorry to hear about your problem, but I’m glad you’re feeling better and are recovering(康复). I’m surprised that in China someone’s liver(肝脏) matched yours! This is really a moving story– a stranger donated part of his liver to a girl he doesn’t even know!

You’re right. We shouldn’t care too much about our weight. I’m happy you stopped taking those weight-loss pills. From your photo I can see you are now looking very well in the hospital. To keep slim is important, especially for an actress, but nothing is more important than health. Your doctor’s advice is indeed very good– exercise for at least half an hour every day and eat lots of fruit and vegetables.

It’s not only in your country. It’s the same here with us Chinese– many people are always going on diets or taking weight-loss pills, which are often dangerous. But in fact, some of them are not overweight(超重) at all. I hope these people can learn something from your story. Hope you will leave hospital as soon as possible. Love

Passage A

Do you know why different animals or pests have their special colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.

Some birds like eating locusts, but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.

If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colouring is protecting themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be seen by hunters. This is because they have the colours much like the tree. Have you ever noticed an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid spread over, the enemies cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it isn’t strong at all. ( ) 1. From the passage we can learn that locusts .

We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and there my wife saw the bookshelf.

It stood outside a furniture(家具)shop. “Buy it,” she said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof-rack(车顶架). I’ve always wanted one like that.”

What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and the bookshelf was tied on to the roof rack. It was tall and narrow, quite heavy too.

As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more polite than usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.

“Right, sir,” he said. “Do you need any more help now?”

I didn’t quite understand. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You’ve been very kind. I live just down the road.”

For several years, Americans have enjoyed tele-shoppingwatching TV and buying

things by phone. Now tele-shopping is starting in Europe(欧洲). In a number of European countries, people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes, jewelry, food, toys, and many other things.

Tele-shopping is becoming popular in Sweden, for example. The biggest Swedish company sells different kinds of things on TV in 15 European countries, and in one year it made $100 million. In France there are two tele-shopping channels, and the French spend about $20 million a year to buy things through those channels.

In Germany, until last year tele-shopping was only possible on one channel for 1 hour every day. Then the government allowed (允许) more tele-pshopping. Other channels can open for tele-business, including(包括) the largest American

tele-shopping company and a 24-hour tele-shopping company. German businesses are hoping this new tele-shopping will help them sell more things.

Some people like tele-shopping because it allows them to do their shopping without leaving their homes. With all the problems of traffic in the cities, this is an important reason. But at the same time, other Europeans do not like this new way of shopping. They call tele-shopping “junk (垃圾)on the air”. Many Europeans usually worry about the quality (质量) of the things for sale on TV. Good quality is important to them, and they believe they cannot be sure about the quality of the things on TV. The need for high quality means that European tele-shopping companies will have to be different from the American companies. They will have to be more careful about the quality of the things they sell. They will also have to work harder to sell things that the buyers cannot touch or see in person.

1. Tele-shopping is _____in Europe.

3. Some Europeans don't like tele-shopping because they _____ .

I remember many interesting things when I was a doctor. But there was one terrible thing always staying in my mind.

One evening, when I was preparing medicine for some sick people, the doctor, who was also my teacher, asked me to take his stethoscope for him. It was in the room at the end of that building. The lamps gave poor light. I opened the door. To my horror, there were two dead people lying on both sides, with white clothes on their faces. I was very much frightened. My hair stood on end. I thought if one of them came back to life, he or she would catch hold of me and would say, “I’m not dead.” What would happen? But I had another thought. I should be brave enough. I had to take the stethoscope for my teacher. So I shut my eyes and walked quietly towards the desk. I took the stethoscope in my hand and rushed out as fast as I could. When I handed it to my teacher, he said I had brought him the wrong one. I had to go back again. This time I was not as frightened as before. I usually wake up at 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning . That day , I happened to wake up earlier . I turned on the TV and I saw that a plane had crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center . My first reaction was that it was a terrible accident . Then I saw another plane fly into the South Tower and I realized that I was witnessing an act of terrorism.

My wife and I spent the day watching the terrible pictures over and over again . When I watched family members looking for their loved ones , the pain in their eyes was something I would never forget . I couldn’t understand how something this terrible could have happened .【山西朔州中考成绩查询2016】

It wasn’t until a few weeks after September 11 that I began to see that perhaps some good did come from this tragedy . People seem different now , more understanding , more tolerant . Little things that seemed to be such a trouble before are no longer big things . Personally , I am more tolerant than I was . I realize life is too short , and too precious , to let myself get worried over small things . I’ve learned also that you can’t take things for granted . Things change in the blink of an eye . People go to work and don’t come back . One moment they’re living and the next minute they’re not . And , it doesn’t matter who you are , there is nothing you can do about it . We never know when our time here will be over , so we all need to make the most of every minute we have .

You try to learn from what happened . You can’t be used up by it . You can’t live by it . All you can do is just live .

precious 珍贵的 take „ for granted 认为„„是当然的

Most people in Britain live in small family groups. More than a quarter of houses in Britain have only got one person in them. Some of these are old people but some are people of twenty to thirty who choose to live alone. 35% of houses have two people in them, and another 17% have three people. 15% have four people in them, and the other homes have five or more.

The families in Britain are small. It is unusual for parents to have more than two children. When children are about eighteen or nineteen, they leave their parents’ home, and they often go to a different city. Sometimes they only visit their parents two or three times a year.
