My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest

memories is standing without shoes in the garden, and my hands

were dirty from digging in the ground.

As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden. I

remember Dad loved growing all kinds of things: potatoes,

watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow corn, and our

favorite— red tomatoes.

As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about

gardening with Dad. Instead of a fantastic land, the garden

turned into a place I was tired of. However, Dad’s love for

gardening became stronger and stronger. After all the kids had

grown up and started families of their own, Dad put his whole heart into it. Even when he was badly ill, he still took care of his garden.

But then, bit by bit, his health went down. Too tired to weed(除草), he simply let them be. He only planted tomatoes. As Dad became weaker and weaker, I had to take up his gardening work. Dad was dying. The rows and rows of colorful vegetables were gone.

For the first few years after he died, I couldn’t even stand to look at anyone’s garden, for fear that the memorieswould hurt me. Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, while I was gardening, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the field.

44. When the writer was a child, heloved_____in the garden.

A. followinghis father around B. growing all kinds of things

A. When his father was badly ill B. When his father’s health went down

C. When his father became weaker and weaker D. When his father talked about the gardening

47. The writer decided to _____ three years ago.

A. plant his father’s garden B. plant his own garden

C. sell his father’s garden D. visit others’ gardens

C

Fluency(流利) in another language is a dream of a newcomer to another country. Besides, understanding the culture and learning to communicate comfortably with people of that culture are as important as learning the rules of the language. Language learning and culture learning go together and may take a long time.

Sometimes people feel that they understand a culture after a few weeks or months. People do learn a lot when they first begin living in another culture, but this is only the first step of learning. It usually involves things like learning everyday activities and some basic customs(习俗).

To really understand another culture, people have to go beyond the first step. This is challenge because it is often difficult to know what to learn. Much of what we call “culture” is hard to see.

Culture is like an iceberg(冰山). Imagine in your mind a huge iceberg in the ocean. The only part of the iceberg that you see is the tip. You don’t see the rest of the iceberg because it is hidden from sight in the water. It is easy to forget that it is there. Most of the iceberg is deep in the ocean, just as much of a culture is deep within its people.

When you meet someone from another culture, certain culture differences are obvious: You hear another language or you hear your own language spoken with an accent(口音). You see different foods, clothes and sometimes physical characteristics of people. You watch new customs or habits, such as the use of chopsticks, and, bowing or kissing on both cheeks as a greeting. These differences are interesting and important, but they are

usually not too difficult to understand. They can be seen easily and quickly.

The part of culture that is like the underwater part of the iceberg consists ofassumptions(设想), communication styles, values, and beliefs about what is right and wrong. The hidden part of culture influences much of a person’s way of thinking and communicating. It is the meaning behind his or her verbal (言语的) and nonverbal language. Learning to communicate well with people from another culture involves understanding the hidden part of culture.

48. To really understand another culture, people should ________________.

A. learn the rules of language B. learn the hidden culture

C. visit some local people D. live with some local people

49.The underlined phrase means ______.

A. lies inB. is made up of C. agrees with D. is different from

50. Which of the following does the writer agree?

A. Communication styles can be easily seen and learned.

B. Language learning is more important than culture learning.

C. Learning about culture is not easy and may take a long time.

D. People usually learn a culture after a few weeks or months.

51.The passage is mainly about_____.

A. learning about culture B. learning about people

C. the hidden part of the iceberg D. fluency in another language

D

Does your teen spend all of his or her free time playing video games, talking on the phone or going out with friends that don’t really meet with your agreement? Is your son or daughter always asking you for money? Perhaps it’s time to tell your teen to get a job. You might disagree by asking “But he’s still in school and if he gets a job, his schoolwork might suffer.”

Does he have a cell phone or want one? Are you going to buy it? Are you going to pay the monthly phone bill? If you are, that’s your choice, but on the path to adulthood is teaching them to be independent, but buying them whatever they want and paying the bills for them is the first step in creating a dependent adult. This process is often referred to as enabling. You might ask, “Enabling them to do what?” The answer is enabling them to depend on others throughout their lives rather than themselves. Teaching them to be self-supporting is the best choice.

Parents may argue that it is their responsibility to support their children, and it is true that as parents it is our responsibility to meet the needs of our children until they reach legal(法定的)age, but part of responsible parenting is teaching our children to be responsible and self-supporting as they move into adulthood. When teens get their own jobs,it gives them a sense of success. They are making their own money, which allows them to buy such as cell phones and pay the bill on their own rather than depending on their parents. Allowing them to pay their own bills also gives them a chance to get to know the world of adulthood.

All too often, teens only see that being an adult can drive and drink. But they fail to see that being an adult means working, paying bills, saving money and managing costs responsibly. When your teen gets a job, you should encourage him or her to open a savings account in a bank at first, which can help your teen to spend money wisely. Believe it or not, it really does make a difference to them when they’re spending their own money rather than yours.

52. The purpose of the first paragraph is ________.

A. to point out a serious problem B. to complain about careless parents

C. to raise the topic by asking questionsD.to tell what kids are prefer to do

53. In the second paragraph, the underlined word “it” means ________.

A. teaching your teen to be independent B. meeting the needs of your teen

C. buying a cell phone for your teen D. paying your teen’s phone bill

54. From the passage, we can learn ____________.

A. buying teens whatever they want can create independent adults

B. when teens get their own jobs, they still ask their parents for money

C. teens understand being adult means managing everything responsibly

D. teens can get to know the adult world by spending their own money

55.What is the best title of the passage?

A. Helping teens to find good jobs B. Stepping into your teens world

C. Improving the relationship with your teens D. Training teens to be independent and responsible

七、阅读短文,根据短文内容,从短文后的五个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。每个选项只能用一次。(共10分,每小题2分)

Have you had a headache during a test? Have you ever been so worried about something that you have a headache or even can’t sleep at night? If so, then you know what stress is..This worry in your mind can make your body feel bad. You may feel angry, sad, scared, or afraid—all of which can give you a stomachache or a headache.

Good stress might happen when you’re called to answer the stress pushes you to prepare better before the test.

On the other hand, bad stress can happen if the stress lasts too long. You may not feel well if your parents are fighting, if a family member is sick, if you’re having problems at school, or if anything else makes you unhappy every day. That kind of stress isn’t going to help you.and if you exercise and leave time for fun, you’ll probably feel less stressed. B. Some kinds of stress are good and others are bad

C. This kind of stress can help you to get things better done

D. Stress is what you feel when you are worried about something

E. Make sure you keep yourself in mind: Sleep, Exercise, and Food

八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)

It’s not useful for you if you can’t remember what you read or study. You just waste your time.

If you want to remember what you study or read well, you must have a special purpose or reason for reading. When you know why you’re reading, you can remember better.

Think why a salesgirl in a store goes away when your answer to her offer is “No, thank you. I’m just looking around”, because both you and she know that you aren’t sure what you want. But if you say, “Yes, thank you. I want a pair of sun glasses.” instead,She will say:“Right this way, please.” And she will be very glad to lead you to what you want.

It’s quite the same with your studying or reading. If you choose a book, you only think, “just look” but without any purpose, you are likely to get nothing. But if you know what you want, you are almost sure to get something from it when you read or study. You want “to find out more about”, “to understand the reason for”.A good reader has a clear purpose or reason for what he is doing. He canconnectthe information to hisgoal and remember it better.

My father was always a good gardener. One of my

earliest memories is standing without shoes in the

garden, and my hands were dirty from digging in the

ground.

As a child, I loved following Dad around in the

garden. I remember Dad loved growing all kinds of

things: potatoes, watermelons almost as big as me, rows

of yellow corn, and our favorite— red tomatoes.

As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of a fantastic land, the garden turned into a place I was tired of. However, Dad’s love for gardening became stronger and stronger. After all the kids had grown up and started families of their own, Dad put his whole heart into it.

These differences are interesting and important, but they are usually not too difficult to understand.

C. visit some local peopleD. live with some local people

49.The underlined phrase A. lies inB. is made up of C. agrees with D. is different from

A. learning about cultureB. learning about people

C. the hidden part of the iceberg D. fluency in another language

If you are, that’s your choice, but might not be the best way to teach your teen responsibility. Helping kids out on the path to adulthood is teaching them to be independent, but buying them whatever they want and paying the bills for them is the first step in creating a dependent adult.

Gabi just finished her third year of high school. However,

at the beginning of June, she received her report card in

the mail, she learned that she failed a term of algebra(代

数). This meant she had to go to summer school this vacation.

Gabi was glad she had the chance to make up the class.

She can’t move on to the next level in math if she doesn’t pass algebra. Summer school isn’t easy though. Gabi has to learn the material in 6 weeks instead of the 20 she had during the regular school year.

Summer school also meant that Gabi would stay in a hot classroom while most of her friends were at the beach or parks. Her friends passed algebra, so they had most of June, July, and August free from school work. Going to summer school also meant that Gabi’s family had to change their summer vacation plans.

Gabi had to be in summer school from 9 a.m. to noon. She couldn’t stay up late at night. She had to catch the early bus in the morning to school. The classrooms were hot since the school building was old and did not have air conditioning. After Gabi took the bus home from school, she couldn’t do what she wanted. She had to do her homework.

This was the first time Gabi had to go to summer school. She wanted it to be the last time. Gabi made a promise to herself. In the new term, when regular classes begin again, she will try her hardest to pass. Studying hard without air conditioning in summer in a classroom while your friends are out having a good time is not fun. Summer break is not so much of a break when you have school.

44. Gabi received her report card at the beginning of_____________.

A. August B. July C. June D. May

45. Why did Gabi go to the summer school in the vacation?

A. Because she received a report card. B. Because she failed a term of algebra.

C. Because her parents weren’t at home. D. Because her friends were at the beach.

46. How long does Gabi have to learn algebra this summer vacation?

A. For four hours. B. For twenty days. C. For six weeks. D. For two months.

47. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Gabi went to summer school in the evening. B. Gabi decided to work harder in the new term.

C. Gabi’s family put off their summer vacation plans.

D. Gabi’s summer school was old but had air conditioning. C

Water is a limited natural resource that must be protected; it is

limited in many places. Even if you live in an area with enough rainfall,

using water uses energy to process(加工) it. Here are some tips on saving

water at home. ★

Install a water meter(安装水表).

You might be very surprised to find out how much water you are actually using.

By installing a water meter you can raise your attention so that you will reduce your water use.

Many water meters have a small wheel that turns quite rapidly if any water at all is running. If you are sure all your water is turned off and you see this wheel moving at all, you have a leak(漏水).

★ Take shorter showers.

Take showers rather than baths. By taking a bath you are using up to 100 liters of water! Showering will generally use less than a third of this amount.

★ Catch the cold water that comes out of the tap or shower while you are waiting

for the hot water.

Use it to water plants or pour into your toilet reservoir.

★ Turn the tap off while you are brushing your teeth, shaving, washing your

hands, doing dishes, and so on.

Turn the tap off when you shower, too. Get wet, then turn off the water while you

soap up. Turn it back on for long enough to wash. Look for a twist vale that is

installed behind your shower head to keep the water temperature where you set it while the water is off.

★ Wash full loads.

Wait until you have a full load of clothes before you wash a load. Don’t wash a pair of pants just because you want to wear the same pair of pants the next day! When washing your clothes, be sure to use the economy mode and this will save you both water and electricity!

48. If you install a water meter, you can__________.

A. keep the water running B. stop the water running

C. save both water and electricity D. raise attention to use less water

49. By taking a shower you can save about __________water.

A. 30 liters B. 60 liters C. 100 liters D. 300 liters

50. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. You have a leak if the wheel of the water meter is moving.

B. You should wait to have as many clothes as possible before washing.

C. When showering, you should soap up while the water keeps running.

D. You are encouraged to use more water in the area with enough rainfall.

51. The writer writes this passage to_______________.

A. explain to us how valuable water is B. tell us the ways of using water at home

C. ask us to do what he says in the passage D. give us some advice on saving water at home

D

Many teens in high school want to try out for sports. A

lot of them try out

because they think it will make them popular or get them more

dates. While this may seem like a silly reason, there are lots of

other benefits to sports that your children may fail to notice.

Here are some reasons that you’ll find comforting.

With TV, movies, computers and video games becoming more and more popular, it has become so much easier for teens to be by themselves

rather than going out

with friends. Kids used to go hang out at the mall or drive around town; now they just sit at home. Getting your teens into a sport gives them a chance to go out and spend time with other people socially. While they may not find a new best friend, they will learn how to communicate with one another and work as a team and they’ll find something useful later in life.

One of the biggest problems in our society today is obesity, and it’s not just a problem with adults. More and more kids are becoming overweight. Joining

a team sport will help teens get out and get some exercise without feeling

pressured ( 有压力的) to lose weight or get in shape. What’s more, if your teens see that their physical condition is causing them to under-perform, they may be encouraged to do other activities to get healthy. By the time your children reach their teenager year, part of good parenting will be providing them with direction and encouragement and continuing to help them develop a healthy style of living. These days, it’s becoming harder to show your teenagers that you love and support them. A great way to do this is by showing up to their game, helping them practice, and helping with team fundraisers. These are also great ways to spend time with your kids and talk to them.

You may think “but my teen isn’t good enough to make their school team”. There are plenty of other places besides school to play team sports. You can always check out “for-fun” teams. You could look into more unknown sports that you may not have thought of, did you know that bowling is a NCAA team sports? If you do a little research, you’re sure to find something your teen will enjoy. Team sports are a great way for teens to get out of the house, get moving, make friends, and even get a scholarship to college. So why not talk to them about getting into sports today? 52. From Paragrah 2, we know that________________.

A. sports help teens to make best friends with others

B. movies and video games are more popular than sports

C. sports help teens learn how to talk and work with others

D. teens prefer playing with friends outdoors to staying at home

53. The underlined word “obesity” in Paragraph 3 probably means “______”.

A. feeling very lonely B. taking less exercise

C. having too much body fat D. having too much pressure

54. The writer may agree that _______________.

A. encouragement helps teens develop a healthy style of living

B. trying out for sports can make teens popular or get more dates

C. being present at your teens’ game shows your support to them

D. teens on “for-fun” teams are better at playing unknown sports

The tail

It began as the worst summer of my life. The evening before the first day of summer vacation, my mother broke the to me.

―Nancy, your father and I decided that you’re old enough now to take on certain responsibilities. You need to look after Jackie for this summer.‖

Jackie turned up and raised his right hand. ―I promise to do whatever Nancy says.‖

When I was out jumping ropes for the summer competition, he was there in front of me. When I was riding bikes with friends, he was there, too. ―Jackie, you’re not going to be in our faces all day,‖ I shouted at him.

―Mom said you have to me, so I have to be in your face.‖

Later on, my friends and I decided to climb the hills which mom had warned me not to do. We were afraid that Jackie would tell mom the 捉迷藏) in the park. But in fact, we went to the hills leaving Jackie behind. When we came back in an hour, Jackie was nowhere to find. We checked everywhere in the park, back at home, all the corners of the street …

―Jackie!‖ I cried, ―You’re my only baby brother. Dear God, please let me find him. I’ll play any game he wants. I’ll never lie to him ...‖

Suddenly, we heard some sound up above a big tree. When we looked up, Jackie was there laughing at us. ―So all of you have ‖ ...

―Everything’s OK, Nancy? Nothing happened?‖ Mom asked me when she came back from work. ―No, mom. Everything is fine. Nothing happened at all.‖ Jackie shouted.

Well, the summer didn’t turn out to be so after all. My parents both got pay rise, me and my friends won the rope – jumping competition, and I’d play a game with Jackie or read him a story. And Jackie never told my parents that I’d lost him. I found out that you miss a tail until you almost lose it.

Owning Books

We enjoy reading books that belong to us much more than if they are borrowed. A borrowed book is like a guest in the house; it must be treated with

4

enough careful attention. You must see that it keeps no dirty or destroyed pages.

But books are for use, not for show; you should own no book that you are afraid to mark up, or afraid to place on the table, wide open and face down. A good reason for marking favorite passages in books is that this practice enables you to remember more easily the important sayings, to refer to them quickly, and then in later years, it is like visiting a forest where you once walked in.

Everyone should begin collecting a private library in youth; this habit can here be developed with every advantage. The best wallpaper is books; they are more varied in color and appearance than any wallpaper, they are more attractive in design, and if you sit alone in the room in the firelight, you are surrounded (包围) with close friends. The knowledge that they are there in common thought is both encouraging and refreshing. Books are of the people, by the people, for the people. They are part of history; the best part of personality.

Book – friends have this advantage over living friends; you can enjoy the most truly great society in the world whenever you want it. The great dead are beyond our physical (身体的) reach, and the great living are usually almost as too far to reach. But in a private library, you can at any moment talk with Shakespeare or Carlyle or Dumas or Dickens. And there is no doubt that in these books you see these men at their best. They ―laid themselves out‖ they did their best to entertain (娱乐) you, to make a favorable impression. You are necessary to them as an audience is to an actor; only instead of seeing them masked, you look into their inside heart of heart.
