Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, politics, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful .Yet, no one can learn everything from school. A teacher, no matter how much he knows can not teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.

It is always more important to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula(公式). It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a math problem. Great scientists, such as Edison, Newton and Galileo didn’t get everything from school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success is that they work hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments.

Above all , they knew how to use their brains.

Many of the world’s population problems have been caused by the crowding of large groups of people into the cities. Supply for the needs of the people leads to further pollution by industry. If the rapid increase in the human population continues at the present rate, there may be much greater harm. Some scientists speak of the increase in numbers of people as “population pollution. About 2,000 years ago, the world’s population was probably about 250 million. It reached a billion in 1850. By 1930 the population was two billion. It is now seven billion. If the population continues to grow at the same rate, there would be 25 billion in the world a hundred years from now!

Man has been using the earth’s resources more and more rapidly over the past years. Some of them are almost gone. Now many people believe that man’s

greatest problem is how to control the growth of the population. The materials in the world will not support the human population in time to come if the present rate of increase continues. Already there is overcrowding in the cities and hunger in some countries. Can man’s rate of increase continue? Many people believe that human survival in the future depends on the answer to this question.

54. The world’s population problems would be less serious if__________.

A. fewer people moved from the countryside to the cities

B. more people moved from the countryside to the cities

C. industry developed less fast

D. many people moved to the cities without the fast development of

industry

55. It is estimated that the world’s population will grow by _______ in

the next 100 years.

A. 2 billion B 7 billion C. 18 billion D. 25 billion

56. The most serious problem that man is facing is thought to be how to______.

A. use the earth’s resources

B. control the waste of the natural materials

C. slow down the increase of the population

D. stop the birth of new babies C

Why do people smoke? One reason is that people become addicted(成瘾) to cigarettes. The addictive substance(物质)in cigarettes is nicotine(尼古丁). When people smoke, the nicotine goes right into the blood stream and makes people feel relaxed. A smoker's body gets used to the nicotine, and if he stops smoking, he feels nervous. Many smokers try to stop smoking but because of the addiction to nicotine, they feel so uncomfortable that they often find it too difficult to do so. Another reason is that people simply enjoy smoking. Having a cigarette for many people means taking a break. For some people smoking becomes part of certain social rituals (礼仪), for example, sending the cigarette after dinner. Many people enjoy smoking because it gives them something to do with their hands. Reaching for a cigarette, lighting it and flicking (弹掉) the ashes are special comfort in a situation where they feel nervous.

Many people also like the taste of tar (焦油) in cigarettes. However, it is the tar that causes cancer. While governments and health experts have tried to get people to give up smoking completely, cigarette manufacturers (生产商) have tried to keep selling them by producing cigarettes with less tar. Many people in western countries have welcomed these cigarettes since they found it hard to stop smoking and wanted to reduce the danger to their health.

57. Many people become addicted to cigarettes because______________.

A. they like to see smoke come out of their mouth and nose

B. they need to get some tar from cigarettes

C. they feel relaxed when nicotine goes into the blood

D. smoking can cause cancer

58. The substance in cigarettes which cause cancer is _____________.【东北育才高一下期末英语卷2015五校联考】

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.

I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

“Oh, you’re such a good man.” She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”

“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.

“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

At dawn, she suddenly said,” I’m tired. Let’s go now.”

We drove in silence to the address she had given me.

“How much do I owe you?” she asked.

“Nothing.” I said.

“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held me tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.”

21. The old woman chose to ride through the city in order to ______.

A. show she was familiar with the city B. see some places for the last time

C. let the driver earn more money D. reach the destination on time

22. The taxi driver did not charge the old woman because he ______.

A. wanted to do her a favor B. shut off the meter by mistake

C. had received her payment in advance D. was in a hurry to take other passengers

23. What can we learn from the story?

A. Giving is always a pleasure.

B. People should respect each other.

C. An act of kindness can bring people great joy.

D. People should learn to appreciate others’ concern.

B

You may know your mother, but how well do you really know Mother’s Day? Cards, flowers, sales, TV specials, and a day off for someone who really deserves (应得) it ---- those are what probably come to mind for many people when they think of Mother’s Day. But there’s more to the story.

The earliest Mother’s Day celebrations were held during spring in ancient Greece. The celebrations honored Rhea, the Mother of the gods. During the 1600’s, England celebrated a day called Mothering Sunday. On this day even servants were given the day off to spend with their families. A mothering cake was even served with the family meal.

In the US, Mother’s Day began in 1872 when Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the famous song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested it as a day devoted to peace. But it didn’t really become popular until 1907 when Anna Jarvis started a campaign to honor mothers. She believed that mothers could help people get over the pain they experienced during the Civil War. The US isn’t alone in devoting a day to mothers. Many other countries including Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Japan, and Belgium also honor their mothers in May. Other countries honor their mothers at different times of the year.

Learning more about Mother’s Day and celebrating Mother’s Day are important, but probably not as important as understanding what your own mother, or grandmother, or aunt has really done for you. And that will certainly be appreciated more than one day in a year.

In the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.

My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.

Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopted and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic – and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No.3. In 2003, another boy was born.

You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo – a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester.

The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.

In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!

I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you‘re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you‘re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won‘t arrive in your life on one day. It‘s a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.

The Spring Festival holiday is supposed to be a period of time entirely for family reunion. However, as people‘s enthusiasm (热情) for digital hongbao increased, the amount of time they spend with family members during the holiday decreases. There has been widespread criticism(批评) over digital hongbao that it has separated family reunion.

―I used to discuss programs in the Spring Festival Gala (春晚) with my family members, but this year, I barely had time to watch the gala because I was staring at my cellphone all the time,‖said Kang, a 30-year-old radio station editor. ―I went to karaoke with my cousins during the holiday, and 1 was grasping digital hongbao the whole time, even when I was singing karaoke.‖

―On the last day of the holiday, I started to regret spending too much time on these digital hongbao. Therefore, instead of fighting for hongbao, I watched TV with my mom that night. I left home feeling so sorry! I should have spent more time with my parents.‖ ―Next year, I will still play this game, but with less money and for a smaller amount of time,‖ Kang said.

Dong Chenyu, a teacher from Beijing Foreign Studies University, said it‘s unfair to blame hongbao for destroying family reunion.

―When television was invented, people accused it of standing in the way of face-to-face human communication. The same accusation (谴责) came up on telephone and text message services when they were first invented. The same goes with digital hongbao,‖ Dong said.

―It does nothing but offers a new way of human communication. The rest is people‘s choice. As long as no one expects to earn money from this and takes this as a means of gambling (赌博), it‘s a good way to improve human connections,‖ Dong said.

29. How did Mr. Kang feel about digital hongbao according to Paragraph 2?

A. He felt regretted spending too much money.

B. He was happy to spend too much of his time.

C. He had a strong preference for it.

D. He felt a sense of guilty in getting it.

A. It will bring us trouble in holiday reunion.

B. It will be out of fashion in near future.

D. Mr. Dong is in favour of digital hongbao.

32. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?

A. Spring Festival Reunion B. Double-edged Sword

C. New Holiday Enthusiasm D. Family Reunion Destruction

C

―People are ruder today because they are rushed and more ‗time poor‘ than ever before,‖ says Patsy Rowe, ―‖ Due to our strong attraction to electronic equipment it is a wonder that more people don‘t wake up each morning and greet the singing birds witha complaint (抱怨) about the noise. Here are some examples of rudeness.

Some people prefer to do almost everything over the Internet. To them, dealing with an actual human is like an evolutionary step backward. It feels very slow because humans don‘t work at 4G speeds. When you have dinner with friends, you will often notice someone paying more attention to his mobile phone. We have programmed ourselves to think that every new message brings life-changing news, so taking calls and checking our texts are more important than talking to the people we are with. What is worse, some people even tend to send anonymous (匿名的) rude messages by email.

However, rudeness is never acceptable. Don‘t assume it is OK to be rude if the person you‘re in touch with won‘t recognize you. If you have something awful to say, have the courage to face the person and say it, write a letter or email and sign it, or forget it. Upsetting people with unsigned messages is cruel and disgusting.

We shouldn‘t blame technology for our shortcomings. Technology is here to help us, but we should not allow it to take over our lives. An important step is acknowledging our shortcomings. People spend a lot of time pointing out bad manners but it would be even more helpful if we‘d publicly acknowledge good manners when we see them.

33. What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?

A. People can tell good from bad behavior.

B. Radar is able to observe human behavior.

C. People care little about their behavior.

D. Radar can be used to predict human behavior.

34. Some people are less willing to deal with humans because ___________.

A. they are becoming less patient

B. they are growing too independent

C. they have to handle many important messages

D. they have to follow an evolutionary step backward

35. The author thinks sending unsigned awful messages is ____________.

A. ridiculous B. disgusting C. acceptable D. reasonable

36. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. We should applaud good behavior.

B. Technology can never be blamed.

C. We should keep pointing out mistakes.

D. Technology will take over lives one day.
