The Loss of the Moss

First of all, I have to tell you what “moss” is, if you don’t want to look up the word. Moss is a small green or yellow plant that grows in a thick mass on wet soil or on a wet surface. Understand? Well, if not, the words under the title can tell you all the things. In the research classes during the last term, our group decided to do research on moss, to see what its reaction is of being in a place full of SO2, NO2, NO, etc.

Before the holiday came, our biology teacher asked each of us to take one flower pot of moss home, and look after them during the holiday. I followed the teacher’s words, watered the moss every day, put the pot near the steam heating pipe (to keep warm), and covered the upside of the pot with plastic film (to keep wet), and also make a hole on the plastic (to let the moss breathe) as the teacher said.

Moss is really easy to look after, I thought. No more than 5 days, the moss turned green (we had left it in the biology classroom for a month. Without water, it mostly became grey.) And I also noticed that it had grown “tall” from 2mm to 5mm! I was very delighted to see this. After 30 days’ dry surroundings, it turned green and strong so soon. I was shocked by the vitality of this little plant.

Things didn’t go that smoothly, several days ago, when I was amazed at the speed of its growth, and afraid of it growing too fast, too much, no enough place for it to stay. So I decided not to water it for one day. Only one day! But after one day, the moss was grey. So I hurried to got the water, watered it carefully, but nothing turned optimistic. Now many days passed, though many things have done to it, the moss died at last. That’s the truth. Nothing can pull it out from death.

I was disappointed for some time. Hadn’t it experienced dryness? For thirty days! Why? Why couldn’t it bear dryness for once more? Later I came to understand. Moss is just like people. One day we faced failure, and life became difficult. We missed the rich and comfortable days before, and tried our best to make living, Then we became happy and rich again, but soon forgot how we had struggled, and forgot gradually to treasure the comfortable days. When we were used living a comfortable life, then if disaster came again, we would be more easily to lost confidence, and being sad and despondent all life. Maybe that’s the reason why the moss died,

I don’t know how I should tell the teacher, but I have learned to treasure our everyday life, so I’m writing this unskilled article to commemorate the loss of the moss.

Lord of the Flies

The novel starts with an air crash. A group of boys from Britain are casted in a deserted island. All of them are under 13. In the beginning, Ralph, whose father is a naval officer, meets with a fat little boy, who has a nickname Piggy. They explore the island to find other survivors. And they find a conch shell on the beach. Ralph learns to blow on it. The other boys gather to the beach when they hear the conch. Among them there are choirboys led by Jack. They organize a meeting and make Ralph their

chief. Ralph says one must hold this shell couch if he want to say something in the meeting. Jack is still in charge of the choir and he says they will be hunters. They make fire as a signal for rescue with Piggy’s eyeglasses and erect two tents. Everyone has his work: gathering fruits and water, hunting and watching the fire.

The hunters go into the forest and find a wild pig. They fail to catch it but Jack learns how to hunt through this experience. The two choirboys, who are supposed to keep the fire going, go and help Jack in hunting. Just then, a ship passes. Ralph notices that the fire has burned out. He is very angry about this. Piggy criticizes them, who just return with their first prey. During a meeting, a boy says he hears the sound of a beast, which lead to a great fear between them. Ralph and Jack go to search the “beast” but find a corpse. Jack tells others that the beast exists, which divides them into two groups, one of which is led by Ralph and the other by Jack. Jack assembles his tribe and hunt wild animals. They have their faces painted. Ralph’s group continues to keep the fire for rescue and try to follow democracy they had create.

Jack’s tribe hunts a pig. They cut off its head and hang it on a stick as a sacrifice to beast. Simon goes into the woods and finds the head, covered by many flies, as "The Lord of the Flies." He even hears that the pig’s head is speaking to him. He goes to Jack’s tribe. Mistaken to be a beast, Simon is killed by the tribe led by Jack.

Jack and his followers attack Ralph’s camp and steal Piggy’s glasses to make fire. Ralph, Piggy and Samneric decide to go to Jack’s tribe to get back the glasses. In the confrontation, Piggy is killed and the conch is shattered. Samneric become a member of the tribe and betrays Ralph. Now, Ralph is alone with any aid.

Ralph keeps running in the forest and at last comes to beach. The hunters are pursuing him and firing the tent with Piggy’s glasses. A ship nearby notices the fire on the beach and land on the island. Ralph is aware of the rescue. But he does not simile. He cries.

The Broken Wings

The Broken Wings is a novel by Gibran, Kahlil, published in New York by Citadel Press in 1957.

The story is set in the 20th century in Lebanon, particularly Beirut and its vicinity. Kahlil Gibran writes this novel in the first person. In fact, Gibran himself is the major character of the novel and tells the story.

It is a sad story of the broken love affairs of Gibran and Selma Karamy. Gibran meets his father's old friend, Fards Effandi Karamy, who treats him as a son, and through Farris meets his daughter, the beautiful and intelligent Selma. Gibran and Selma fall in love at the first sight, but their life together is destroyed when Farris agrees, because of the Bishop's power, on a marriage between Selma and the Bishop's nephew, the wicked and corrupt Monsour Bey Galib, who has his mind on Selma's money. A dutiful daughter, Selma obeys. But after her marriage, she leads an unhappy and unfulfilled life; She continues to meet Gibran secretly in a nearby temple. Later she bears Monsour's child, but it dies soon after birth. Broken-hearted, Selma dies shortly afterwards. Gibran is left behind, suffering and mourning.

This Pasio conflict of the novel arises out of an arranged marriage between Selma and the Bishop's nephew, which separate Selma and Gibran from the love and life they might have together. The novelist has created a beautiful but sad story of love but lost love in an atmosphere of sorrow and despair The reader easily understands the plight of Selma and Gibran; as a result, it is almost natural for the reader to dislike the Bishop and his nephew and side with Selma and Gibran, and at the same time, to hate the arranged marriage based on power and money, which is also an important theme of the story.

Sons and Lovers

Sons and Lovers is a novel written by David Herbert Lawrence and it was first published in 1913 in London by Wyman & Sons.

D. H. Lawrence was born at Eastwood, Notts, on September 11, 1885, the fourth child of a miner who had been employed at Brinsley Colliery since he was 7 years old. In 1911, his first novel The White Peacock was published.

Sons and Lovers is divided into two parts and is composed of 15 chapters altogether. the story, set in England, can be interpreted as an autobiographical novel of Lawrence. The hero of the book, Paul Morel, is the second son of a miner's family. His mother, Mrs. Morel, is a daughter of a mid-class family. Because of the differences in family background and education, a shadow is soon cast upon the married life of Mrs. Morel. And this shadow is darkened by Mr. Morel's laziness and alcoholism. By misfortune or bad luck, Mr. Morel has an accident and becomes a cripple, which changes him into a man of bad temper. As a result, the couple shares less and less the things in common and is driven farther and farther apart from each other. Little by little, Mrs. Morel transports her attention and love to her children, especially her two sons, William and Paul. She encourages them to leave the small mining region for a big city to find opportunities for a better life. After the death of her first son, William, because of hard work and pneumonia, Mrs. Morel's divided attention and love is poured completely upon Paul. The mother's abnormal love robs Paul of his normal love for his girl friend.

Sons and Lovers has always been claimed since its publication to be another version of Oedipus complex*. But D. H. Lawrence is in no sense an imitator. Sons and Lovers is truly an autobiographical novel. It describes an ordinary life of a coal miner's family. The abnormal love from the mother deprives Paul of his independent personality and mental health. It is perhaps because of this true picture of life that the novel has won Lawrence everlasting reputation.

Oedipus complex: (psych) love of an infant for the parent of the opposite sex, with jealousy of the other parent. The term originated from a Greek myth in which King Oedipus killed his father and married his mother.

Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House

I have been reading a book for many days. The books name is CAT AND MOUSE IN A HAUNTED HOUSE. It is telling about Geronimo Stilton who is a newspaper mouse who runs newspaper in New Mouse City—the capital of Mouse island.

On one night of October, he decided to visit his aunt, Sweetfur. But he got lost when he was driving through the Dark Forest because of the foggy. Then his car was out of gas. He thought “I wish I was at home”.

Suddenly there was a lightning in the sky and he saw a big castle. When he walked closer to the front door, he saw two stone cats and a sign that says: To Canny Cat’s castle. The door bell was in one stone cat’s mouth. When Geronimo was deciding to go into the castle, it starts to rain, so he went into the castle……

At last Geronimo’s sister, little nephew Benjamin and his cousin Trap all came and helped him find out all of two little cat. They don’t want others to come into the castle because the castle is their ancestor Canny Cat’s. So they make many tricks. After reading this story, I think it’s very interesting, and I had a lot of fun. My favorite character is Geronimo’s nephew Benjamin. Because he is very cute and clever, he always observes every detail. He found out the foot print on the floor and the nail on the wall. In the story it shows Geronimo is a very timid mouse that always scared himself.

I like this story very much, so I’ll still read more this set of book.
