IF, a few years ago, somebody had suggested that a Conservative chancellor of the exchequer would hand a Labour-dominated English city much greater spending powers, few people would have believed it. But in February of this year George Osborne said he would do just that, by transferring control over a 6 billion local NHS budget to politicians in Manchester. The chancellor’s move was revolutionary. If similar powers were given to other cities it would change the way Britain is run, reversing a decades-long trend towards the centralization of power in Westminster. Many attempts have been made to give cities and regions more clout.

人的一生难免会遭遇挫折,但请不要轻言放弃。只有坚持走到最

后的人才能到达成功的彼岸。

One day John decided to quit--quit everything, his life included. He went to have one last talk with a wise man.

“Can you give me one good reason not to quit?” John said. His answer surprised John.

“Look around , ” said the wise man. “Do you see the fern(蕨菜) and the bamboo?” “Yes,” John replied.

“When I planted the fern and the bamboo seed, I took good care of them .I gave them light and water. The fern grew quickly. Yet, nothing grew from the bamboo seed. But I did quit the bamboo. In the second year the fern grew even bigger. And again, nothing grew from the bamboo seed. But I didn’t quit the bamboo,” he said.

“In the third year still nothing grew from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit. In the fourth year , again, grew nothing from the bamboo seed, but I would not quit,” he said.

“Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared to the fern it was small and insignificant„ But just 6 months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall. It had spent five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it needed to survive.”

“Did you know, John, that all this time you have been struggling and you have actually

been growing roots?”

“Don’t compare you to others,” the wise man said. “The bamboo has a different purpose to the fern. Yet, they both make the forest beautiful. Your time will come. Do not regret one day of your life. Good days give you happiness; bad days give you experiences; both are essential to life.”

The only reason I agreed to do this at all is because I figure later on when I’m rich and famous, I’ll have better things to dob than answer people’s stupid questions all day long. So this book is gonna come in handy.

Like I said, I’ll be famous one day, but for now I’m stuck in middle school with a bunch morons.

Let me just say for the record that I think middle school is the dumbest idea ever invented. You got kids like me who haven’t hit their growth spurt yet mixed in with these gorillas who need to shave twice a day.

„„„„„„

Man, I don’t know what is up with girls these days. It used to be a whole lot simpler back in elementary school. The deal was, if you were the fastest runner in your class, you got all the girls.

Nowadays, It’s a whole lot more complicated. Now it’s about the kind of clothes you wear or how rich you are or if you have a cute butt or whatever. And kids like Ronnie Mccoy are scratching their heads wondering what the heck happened.
