Vincent Willem Van Gogh (30 March, 1853-29 July, 1890 ) was a Dutch Post Impressionist artist. He is considered one of the greatest artists with great influence on the 20th century art.

Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a company of art dealers(艺术商). After a brief period as a teacher, he became a missionary(传教士). He did not begin his career as an artist until 1880; however, during the last ten years of his life, he produced more than 2,000 pieces, including around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches(素描). He worked only with somber colors until he met Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism in Paris. Van Gogh used the bright colors and style of painting in a uniquely recognizable style. Most of his best known works were produced during his final two years, when he was suffering from serious mental illness.

In 1890, Van Gogh shot himself in the chest when he was 37. He died two days later, Theo, his brother and his best friend, at his side reported his last words as “The sadness will last forever.” it would not take long before his fame grew higher and higher.

Van Gogh’s mother threw away quite a number of his paintings. The only painting he sold during his lifetime, The Red Vineyard, was created in 1888. It is now on display in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, Russia. Several paintings by Van Gogh rank among the most expensive paintings in the world. On March 30, 1987 Van Gogh’s painting Irises was sold for a record of $53.9 million at Southby’s, New York. Dearest Mary,

Thank you for the lovely letter and your kind invitation. You are truly special to me. But my dear, I cannot come to live with you. Going to a nursing home is what I want to do.

I know you, Mary, and I'm very proud of you and all your activities. But, your basketball, music classes, and studying, and your parents' work schedules cause you to come home late at least three or four times a week.

An old lady like me needs to eat at regular times and needsto have care and companionship(陪伴) all day long. How can I feel at peace when I'm either alone all day, or causing my loving family to give up important things in their lives to stay home for me? And besides that, moving to your house means I have to leave my hometown and move to a new city. My good friends, people I have known all my life, who come to visit me, would no longer be able to come. You remember Linda and Len. They come every Wednesday at 1 O'clock and take me to the store if I need something. Ruth Norton comes for me every Friday morning to take me to play games at the seniors' recreation center.

I do feel sorry for some of the old people in the nursing home who have no family to visit them. I have enjoyed your visits and love to hear all about your experiences, your studies, and your friends. I hope you continue to share your life with me when I move to the nursing home. Our views towards life change over the time. When I was around five years old, I was in a car accident. At that time, I did not realize the seriousness of it and how lucky I was to still be alive. As I look back to think what happened on that night, I now realize how lucky my family members and I were to not have gotten serious injuries.

The day of the accident started out great. My brother, Troy, and I had spent the night before at JoAnn’s house, with Heather, and JoAnn’s husband Gary. The next day we spent playing inside the house, because it was cold, windy and rainy outside. At night, JoAnn told us we were going out and that where we were going was a surprise. The five of us climbed into an old car, and we set off for our surprise. It was still cold, windy, and raining cats and dogs outside when we left. Troy, Heather and I sat in the backseat together happily. The next thing I knew was that everything was chaos(混乱)! The road was so slick(滑的) that the car lost control. Glass was flying everywhere, and it sounded like there was noise all around us. Then it was totally quiet, except for the sound of the rain and wind. Troy, Heather and I were all lying on top of one another. The three of us were crying, not knowing what had happened. JoAnn and Gary were trying to calm(使平静) us down and kept asking us if we were all right. Luckily, none of us was injured, just a few cuts. After that I only remember sitting there in the cold, dark night waiting for Gary to get back with people to help us. We never got to the surprise that night. But at least we were able to go home in one piece.

After my brother and I got home that night, I remember my parents let us stay up as long as we wanted to. I guess my parents were realizing just how close they came to losing us that night. As I think of the tragedy(悲剧) that could have happened on that night, I realize how precious(宝贵) life is. I treasure my family and friends, and hope that we will share a loving, caring, and rewarding lifetime together. Things seldom go the way I plan them to, but I take a deep breath, try to laugh, and make the best of it.

If Money Were No Object

The Star Times recently asked people about their dreams. These are not the kind of dreams people have when they sleep. Instead, they are wonderful ideas and plans people have about things they could do. The newspaper asked people the following question: if money were not object, what would you like to do? In other words, if people had all the money they wanted, are there special things they would do with their lives? About 500 people answered the survey questions.

Almost half of the people in the survey said they would buy material things such as a bigger house or a new car. About 20% or one fifth of the people said they would travel to interesting or famous places.17%

answered that they would give money to someone else. In some cases, they would give money to a charity to help poor or needy people. In other cases, they would give money to their families. More than half of the rest of the people, about 10% of everyone asked, said they would donate or give money to help medical research. They want doctors and scientists to find cures for terrible diseases. Cures will help sick people get better. The rest of the people in the Star Times survey (about 4%) said that they would save money in bank. They said that they didn’t know what they would like to do right now, but perhaps in a few years they would find a good use for the money.

Dr. Mary Wilson is a sociologist at City University. Sociologists study people and the societies they live in. The newspaper asked if she was surprised by the results. She said she thought that lots of people think that if they bought bigger and better things, they would feel happier. However, Dr Wilson says the feeling would not last long. After a while, they would be unhappy with the house or the car. Dr Wilson thinks the happiest people are those who want to make a change in people’s lives that will last into the future. She thinks those people who give money to a charity, to their families, and to medical research are thinking beyond themselves and their needs at this moment. If they had all the money they wanted, they would make a difference in the world.

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home, Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead. The old man said, "I don't want a bucket of water, I want a basket of water. You're just not trying hard enough," and Grandpa went out of the door to watch the boy if he would do. The boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got to the house. The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather, the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, "See Grandpa, it's useless."

"So you think it is useless." The old man said, "Look at the basket." The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been changed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean, inside and outside.

If your home is like most others, you've probably got a recycling (回收) bin in your kitchen. Good for you. That's the first step to recycling. But there are other things that both parents and kids can do to make recycling work better.

First, what kinds of rubbish bins are in the other rooms of your house? What about in your bedroom? You've probably just got one rubbish bin where everything goes. Bui it's a good idea to place a special bin for recycling paper. Then when it goes full, you can empty it into a larger recycling bin in the kitchen. You can also put a small recycling bin in the bathroom for any useless paper there.

Before you throw an item into the recycling bin, stop and think if you can use that item again. Take plastic items with yoghurt, for example. After eating what's in them, you can clean them and store them in a cupboard, and later you can use them for storing another food item. You can do the same with the glass jars, too. You can also share your recycling advice with your neighbours.

If you decide to put an item in the recycling bin, it's very important to follow this method. If it has food or drink m it, you must clean it before you put it in the recycling bin. It can't be recycled with food still in it. You should place the item under the running water for a few seconds to clean it. This saves time for the workers in the recycling center. Then they can use their time doing more important work.

The last thing to remember is - don't give up! Recycling is a whole life task and you mustn't just do recycling for a month and then return to your old habits. You can also continue to find other ways to recycle. So make recycling your new habit, and get others involved as well!

88. Is it good for you to have a recycling bin in your kitchen?

89. Where can you put a small recycling bin for any useless paper?

90. What should you do before you throw an item into the recycling bin?

91. Why must you clean the item before you put it in the recycling bin?

We need to be responsible for our environment. Being a frugal consumer(节俭的消费者) is one way to help. But, what exactly does that mean?

Use It Up

You can use things up instead of wasting them. Squeeze that last bit of

toothpaste out of the tube. Use the last little pi of soap. Don't throw away any

bits of the biscuit at the bottom of the box.

Wear It Out

You do not always need to have new things. Suppose your sneakers have

broken laces, but they still fit you. Repair them and wear them longer. You don't

have the latest iPhone until the old one doesn't work anymore. Then you can

get a new one. Think twice before replacing something that still works.

Make It Do

When something you want is not on hand, look for something else that you already have to take its place. Suppose you are packing your lunch for tomorrow and want a butter sandwich. You are out of butter. Have a cheese sandwich instead so that you can use all of the cheese. Learn to fix broken toys instead of just throwing them away. With a little thought, you can make something do, instead of buying something new.

Do Without

Think about all those things that you would like to have. Do you really need them? How long will you really play with that new toy you saw on TV? Making the things that we want uses up your world's resources(资源). And, getting rid of the things we don't want any more takes up even more resources and space.

When I was a foreign teacher in China, every day I taught English to my students and they taught me about China. One day the topic turned to saying ―I love you‖. I was shocked to learn that not one of my students had said this to their mothers, nor had their mothers said it to them. ―Does your mom love you?‖ ―Of course ,‖they answered.

―How do you know ?‖was my logical question. They responded that their mons cooked and always told them what they were doing wrong to show their caring. I was stunned .So mon‘s cooking and criticzing read out as ―I love you ‖. ―Then how do you say ‗I love you ‘to her?‖ They agreed that getting good grades, followed by god jobs would be how they showed their love.

I come from a culture where most people are expressive enough, so I repeated these queries in classes over time. Gradually, I began to get different response. Some of them had exchanged those sentiments with their moms.

One of my favorite stories of change came from a girl. When she came home from university, her mother met her at the door and hugged(拥抱)her. This had never happened before, but her mom said, ―Now that you have gone I have more time to myself. I noticed that in some places mothers and children hug each other and I decided it was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you.‖

In my family we all say ―I love you‖ a lot .While it is true that we often say the words

without having great depth of feelings at that moment, it is almost like a blessing we give each other. Those three little words carry a world of meaning ,even when said as a greeting, but most especially if they are the last words we say to or hear from those we love.

A. comes from America B. is a young woman

53.Chinese people prefer to show love by________.

A. saying ―I love you‖ B. cooking

54.In paragraph 4,what‘s the real meaning of the mom‘s hugging?

A. She is meeting her daughter at the door.

B. She loves her daughter and misses her.

C. She is glad that she has more time to herself

D. he finds it interesting to hug her daughter.

55.What‘s the main idea of the passage?

More and more people like bicycling and it is no surprise. It is fun, healthy and good for the

environment. Maybe that‘s why there are 1.4 billion bicycles and only 400 million cars on roads worldwide today. Bikes can take you almost anywhere, and there is no oil cost!

Get on a bicycle and ride around your neighbourhood. You may discover something new all around you. Stopping and getting off a bike is easier than stopping and getting out of your car. [1]Sweden's program of producing energy from rubbish is so successful, but recently its success has also produced a surprising problem: There is simply not enough rubbish in this country. It has been reported that only 4% of their rubbish goes into landfills The rest 96% is recycled or more recently being re-used as fuel(燃料) in their waste-to-energy factories that are able to deal with up to 2 million tons of rubbish every year. And this situation has made Sweden face the serious and special problem mentioned above.

[2] Sweden has recently begun buying much waste every year from other countries, such as Norway, Bulgaria, Romania and Italy. These countries depend heavily on landfills. In the United States, where 250 million tons of rubbish was produced in 2010 alone, only about 34% was recycled. As a result, more than half of their waste ends up in landfills.

[3] Sweden is now paid by Norway to take its waste away. Sweden not only gets money from other countries but also changes the waste into energy in Sweden, which provides electricity and heating for so many homes. It‟s a win-win situation. Clever!

[4] Sweden is leading the way in waste management, but it is one of few. Most countries‟ technology in dealing with waste needs improving. You never know these people who may be a classmate, a neighbour or a friend—but when you lock your eyes on them, you know at that very moment they will influence your life in some ways.

Sometimes things that happen to you may seem unpleasant, painful, or frustrating at first. But in another way, you find that without getting over those difficulties you would have never realized your ability, strength or will power(意志力).

The people you meet and the success you get help to create who you are and who you become. Even the bad experience can be learned from. In fact, they are sometimes the most important ones.

If someone loves you, give love back to them in the way you can, not only because they love you, but because in a way, they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things.

2)If you go to Bangkok,you can _________.

3)______ is one better way to prevent the strong sunshine in Bangkok.

4)According to the advertisemonts,we know that ____.

All living things on the earth need other living things to live.Nothing lives alone. Most animals must live in a group, and even a plant grows close together with others of the same kind.Sometimes one living thing kills another, one eats and the other is eaten. Each kind of life eats another kind of life in order to live, and together they form a food chain(食物链).Some food chains become broken up if one of the links disappears.

If you buy some well-made clothes, you can save money because they can last longer. They look good even after they have been washed many times.Sometimes some clothes cost more money, but it does not mean that they are always better make.or they always fit better. In other words, some less expensive clothes look and fit better than more expensive clothes.

A bag is useful and the word “bag” is useful. It gives us some interesting phrases(短语).One is “to let the cat out of the bag.” It is the same as “to tell a secret”...

Now when someone lets out(泄漏)a secret,he “lets the cat out of the bag. ” 短文后面有一个理解题目:

John “lets the cat out of the bag” means he ________.

A.makes everyone know a secret

B.the woman bout a cat

C.buys a cat in the bag

D.sells the cat in the bag

It’s hard to make friends if you stay at home alone all the time. Get out of the house and do things that will put you in touch with other people. It’s easier to make friends when you have similar interests.

Don’t be afraid to show people what you’re really good at. Talk about the things you like and do best. People will be interested in you if there is something interesting about you.

Look at people in the eye when you talk to them. That way, they’ll find it easier to talk to you, or people may think you’re not interested in them and may stop being interested in you.

Be a good listener. Let people talk about themselves before talking about “me, me, me”. Ask lots of questions. Show an interest in their answers.Try to make friends with the kind of people you really like, respect, and admire (羡慕)—not just with those who are easy to meet. Be friendly with a lot of people.
