Passage Two

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

Nearly half of all marriages end in divorce. This surpring statistic makes many people think twice before tying a knot (结). This statistic also makes one wonder what cause a maariage to succeed. My parents have been married for thirty-three years, and though they’ve had their their ups and downs, they have had a wonderful relationship. Why has their marriage succeeded?

My parents have always expressed their love for each other. Thoughout their courtship (求婚) they did many wonderful things for each other: buying flowers, wreting letters, and sending surprises. They’ve continued these practices throughout their marriage as ways of showing love.

Another quality of my parents’ marriage is that they are flexible about their demands and expectations of each other. When I was four, Dad was laid off from his job. As a result, Mom entered the workforce. Although Dad was soon rehired, Mom enjoyed her job so much that she decided to keep is. Dad was a bit surprised, but he could see that is made her happy. If problems arose because of the time demands of their jobs, they worked through these problems—together.

My parents remain committed (忠诚的) to each other, even during difficult times. Early in their marriage, Dad was sent overseas as a communications specialist. He wrote home every now and then, but he didn’t see Mom for nine moths. Mom was home alone. Sometimes her single coworkers would encourage her to go out with them and have a good time. When I asked her why she didn’t, she told me that she had made a commitment to my father and she was living by that commitment. When they were reunited, they had nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to be angry with each other about. I have come to believe that their absolute commitment yo each other is, more than anything else, what has caused their marriage to work.

I noce heard someone say that marriage isn’t a fifty-fifty deal. It’s ninety-ten on both sides. Could that be the secret of a successful marriage? It seems to describe the one my parents have.

A) She couldn’t spare any time.

B) She was fed up with betrayal of any kind.

Marc, an intelligent and attractive boy, was 6years old when his parents came to our clinil. His family consisted of his father (37 years), his mother (30 years), himself (6 years), and his sister, Jill (4 years). His parents were well educated. They were both rather rational (理性的) people and also tried to raise their children in a rational and responsible way.

It appeared that, from babyhood, Marc loved external stimulation, but found it hard to amuse himself. When he could not yet wlke or crawl he easily became frustrated. He often wanted to achieve things that were outside his range. As Marc was his mother’s eldest child, she gave him, from birth on a lot of sttention. His mother was a competent but insecure woman. She felt increasingly inadequate as a mother because Marc was demanding and difficult to please, and received little support from her husband in the upbringing of the children. When Marc’s sister,Jill, was born, Marc continued demanding as much of his mother’s attention as he did before. However, it was no longer physically possible for her to give Marc what he wanted. The mother was very happy with her daughter; Jill happened to be a very easy child. For the first time she felt that taking care of a child was not necessarily a hard job. Marc developed an extreme jealousy. He occasionally showed sadistic (虐待狂的) behaviors toward his sister, which made the mother afraid to leave the children without her supervisiom (监管). The mother constantly tried to fulfill her children’s wishes, but primarily functioned as a peacekeeper. She developed angry and

anxious feelings toward her son, because he increasingly spoiled the atmosphere at home with his concentrated on his work. On weekends, he sometimes took one child out (while the mother went away with the other child) to prevent the many scenes and quarrels that occurred when the family was together.

Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:

Animals react to the changing seasons with changes in mood and behavior and human beings are no exception. Most people find they eat and sleep slightly more in winter and dislike the dark mornings and short days. For some, however, symptoms (症状) are severe enough to damage their lives and to cause considerable stress. These people are suffering from SAD. The symptoms tend to start from around September each year lasting until April, but are at their worst in the darkest months.

The standard figure says that around 2% of people in Northern Europe suffer badly, with many more (10%) putting up with milder symptoms. Across the world the incidence (发生率) increases with distance from the equator (赤道), except where there is snow on the ground, when it becomes less common. More women than men are found having SAD. Children and young people can also suffer from it.

The problem stems from the lack of bright light in winter. Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, although the exact means by which sufferers are affected is not yet known.

As the cause is lack of bright light, the treatment is to be in bright light every day by using a lightbox or a similar bright treatment. (Going to a brightly-lit climate, whether skiing or somewhere hot, is indeed a cure). The preferred level of light is about as bright as a spring morning on a clear day and for most people sitting in front of a lightbox, allowing the light to reach the eyes, for between 15 and 45 minutes daily will be sufficient to alleviate the symptoms. The user does not have to stare at the light, but can watch TV or read a book, just allowing the light to reach the eyes. OUTSIDE IN have a complete range of suitable lights, all in line with the research findings from medical and academic facilities. They are all available on our pioneering HOME TRIAL SYSTEM.

61. What happens to SAD patients, according to the passage?

A、They eat more and sleep less. B、They are cheerless and worried.

C、They react to the changing seasons. D、They dislike long days with dark mornings. 62. In which month do SAD symptoms become worst?

A、December. B、September. C、April. D、February. 63. Which of the following statements is false according to the passage? A、Going skiing is one of the good cures for SAD.

B、The percentage of SAD sufferers is high in North Europe. C、Doctors now know how lack of bright light causes SAD. D、People of all ages and both sexes may suffer from SAD.

64. What does the word “alleviate” (Paragraph 4) most probably mean?

A、“cause” B、“produce” C、“show” D、“reduce” 65. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

A、Why people suffer from SAD. B、How SAD patients can be treated.

C、How long an SAD treatment lasts. D、Where people can go for SAD treatment.

Passage Two

Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:

Increasingly, over the past ten years, people – especially young people – have become aware of the need to change their eating habits, because much of the food they eat, particularly processed foods, is not good for the health. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in natural foods.

Natural foods, for example, are vegetable, fruit and grain which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic (有机的) matter, in simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished (滋养) by unused vegetable matter, which provides it with essential vitamins (维生素) and minerals. This in itself is a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers, the main purpose of which is to increase the quantity – but not the quality – of foods grown in commercial farming areas.

Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy farms. Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry: there are battery farms, for example, where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food; they also produce eggs which lack important vitamins.

There are other aspects of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet. Take, for example, the question of sugar. This is actually a non-essential food. Although a natural alternative, such as honey, can be used to sweeten food if this is necessary, we can in fact do without it. It is not that sugar is harmful in itself. But the problem is that the quantity we use has grown steadily over the last two centuries and in Britain today each person consumes an average of 200 pounds a year! Yet all it does is provide us with energy, in the form of calories. There are no vitamins in it, no minerals, and no fiber.

66. Why do people now prefer natural foods?

A、Because they grow fast and cost less. B、Because they fit people’s eating habits. C、Because they are good to people’s health. D、Because they are simply processed foods.

67. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2? A、Fertilizers are important in growing natural foods. B、Soil for natural foods usually lacks organic matter. C、Natural foods are grown in commercial farming areas. D、Chemicals are used to increase the quantity of foods grown.

68. What is the writer’s attitude towards chickens fed on battery farms? A、Supportive. B、Doubtful. C、Hopeful. D、Negative.

69. What is the most important point the writer wants to make about sugar? A、People use it to sweeten food. B、It gives us much-needed energy. C、People take too much of it.

D、It is actually a kind of honey.

70. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word “diet” (Paragraph 4)?

A、“food” B、“rice” C、“animals” D、“agriculture”

Passage Three

Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:

Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the friendship for granted, we often don’t clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few – for example, the average among students is about 6 per

person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy between them and the reasons for their shared interest vary enormously. As we get to know people we take into account things like age, race, economic condition, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of prime importance, it is more difficult to get on with people when there is a marked difference in age and background.

Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, to have attitudes and interests in common – they often talk about “being on the same wavelength”. It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another. People want to do friends favors and hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and to tolerate differences of opinion.

In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.

71. What does the passage say about making friends? A、People usually have fewer friends than they think.

B、People do not have to like each other to become friends. C、People become friends when they get on well with each other.

D、People consider age and background unimportant in making friends. 72. Which of the following statements is true according to Paragraph 2? A、Tolerance is vital to friendship. B、Friends are usually interdependent.

C、Friends do not rely financially on each other.

D、Annoying habits are worse than promise breaking. 73. What does the passage imply about marriage?

A、There is no friendship involved in it. B、There is usually a special occasion for it. C、 It requires shared experiences and emotions. D、It is a much closer relationship than friendship.

74. Which of the following contributes to friendship the most?

A、Similarities in class and race. B、Similarities in age and background. C、 Similarities in habits and beliefs. D、Similarities in opinion and feelings. 75. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A、Friends and Friendship B、Marriage and Friendship C、Benefits from Friends D、The Art of Making Friends Part V Translation from English into Chinese

Directions: In this part there is a passage with 5 underlined sections, numbered 76 to 80. After reading the passage carefully, translate the underlined sections into Chinese. Remember to write your translation on the Translation Sheet.

Man has long wanted to fly. He saw birds, envied them and tried to imitate them. Over the ages,

countless attempts were made: men constructed wings, fastened them to their arms and legs and jumped off towers and hilltops. These “bird-men” flapped (拍动) their wings for short space of time and then fell to the ground.

(76) What was not realized in those early years was that birds have muscles very much stronger, in proportion to their size, than men. Human limbs cannot provide sufficient strength to lift the body off the ground. (77) The secret of flight did not lie in the making of wings, but in discovering the right kind of power, and how to use it.

In the 18th century, the invention of the hot-air balloon by the Montgolfier brothers of France was seen as a great step forward. (78) But balloons and the cigar-shaped airship, which was invented slightly later, did not solve the problem of flying because they had no means of power or control. So the difficulty remained: a true flying machine which was heavier than air and capable of carrying people was still to be invented.(79) Experiments were carried out in many countries, sometimes with models driven by steam engines, but these were too heavy to be used in an airplane with a pilot. The answer finally came at the beginning of this century with the invention of the internal combustion engine (内燃机) – the kind used in motor cars. Here at last was a powerful, yet comparatively light engine, driven by petrol and capable of being fitted into an airplane.

In 1903, two American, the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright, flew a powered airplane for the first time. Their success encouraged designers everywhere.(80) Although there were now newer, different problems, mainly to do with safety and training of pilots, progress was rapid. These were exciting days and interest was intense. The age of airplane arrived. 76.

Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre .

Passage One

Questions 31-35 are based on the following passage:

It is customary for adults to forget how hard and dull and long school is. The learning by memory of all the basic things one must know is a most incredible and unending effort. School is not easy and it is not for the most part very much fun, but then, if you are very lucky, you may find a real teacher. Three teachers in a lifetime are the very best of my luck. My first was a science and math teacher in high school, my second, a professor of creative writing at Stanford, and my third was my friend and parrtner, ED Rickets.

I have to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that three are as few as there are any other great artists. It might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.

My three teachers han these things in common: They all loved what they were doing; they did not tell, but stimulated a burning desire to know. Under their influence, the horizons sprang wide and fear went away and the unknown became knowable.

I shall speak only of my first teacher because in addition to the other things, she brought discovery. She aroused us to shouting, bookwaving discussions. She had the noisiest class in school and she did not even seem to know it. We could never stick to the subject. Our speculation (思绪) ranged the world. She breathed curiosity into us so that we brought in facts or truths shielded in our hands like captured fireflies (萤火虫).

She was fired, and perhaps rightly fightly so, for failing to teach fundamentals. Such things must be learned. But she left a passion (激情) in us for the pure knowable world and she inflamed me with a curiosity which has never left. I have had many teachers eho told me soon-forgotten facts but only three who created in me a new attitude a new hunger. What deathless power lies in

the hands of such a person?

31. In the writer’s opinion, school life is usually A) exciting B) interesting

C) tiresome D) challenging

32. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that .

A) it is easy to find great artists as well as great teachers.

B) there are few great teachers but many great artists.

C) the greastest artists are not easy to find; nor are the greatest teachers.

D) being a great teacher is a great art to learn because teachers spread knowledge.

33.In the writer’s opinion, a good teacher should .

A) teach students the fundamental things

B) stick to one subject and be strict with students

C) teach students the knowledge ranging the world

D) arouse students’ curiosity and desire the world

34. The writer’s first teacher was dismissed mainly bacause .

A) her class was the noisiest in school

B) she did not teach basic knowledge in class

C) she let students shout and wave books in class

D) she did not know how to teach basic knowledge effectively

35. What is the best title of this article?

A) The Teachers in My Life B) How to Become a Teacher

C) What to Teach at School D) What Makes a Good Teacher

The emotions of joy and love are aroused when we think something can help us. An emotion does not have to be created by something in the outside world. It can be created by a person’s thoughts.

Everyone has emotions. Many psychologists believe that infants are born without emotions. They believe children learn emotions just as they learn to read and write. A growing child not only learns his emotions but learns hoe to act in certain situdtions bacause of an emotion.

Psychologists think that there are tow types of emotion: positive and negative. Positive emotions include love, liking, joy, delight, and hope. They are aroused by something that appeals to a person. Negative emotions make a person unhappy or dissatisfoed. They include anger, fear, despair, sadness, and disgust. In growing up, a person learns to cope with the negative emotions in order to be happy.

Emotions may be weak or strong. Some string emotions are so unpleasant that a person will try every means to escape from them. In order to feel happy, the person may choose unusual ways to avoid the emotion.

Strong emotions can make it hard think and to solve problems. They may prevent a person

from learning or paying attention to what he is doing. For example, a student taking an examination may be so worried about failing that ba cannot think properly. The worry drains valuable mental energy he needs for the examination.

Passage Three

Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage:

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer’ and writing. In moet cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write.” I say to them,” not want to be a writer”.

The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poorly-paid affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose londing is never reward. When I left a 20-year career in the US Coast Guard to become a freelance (自由职业) writer, I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me a room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter and felt like a genuine writer.

After a yeqr or so, however ,I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to writer, I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering: What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.

41. The word “prospects” (para.2) is closest in meaning to .

A) rich resource B) reasonable hopes

C) strong desires D) enormous advantages

42.The writer mentions his 20-year career in the US Coast Guard in order to show .

1)词汇书;

2)真题范文;

3)新概念等;

总之,读多了,阅读能力也就提高了;

1)首先要确定思想立场;

Google, the Internet search-engine company, has announced it will give more than twenty-five million dollars in money and investments to help the poor. The company says the effort involves using the power of information and technology to help people improve their lives. Aleem Walji works for Google.org -- the part of the company that gives money to good causes. He said the company’s first project will help identify where

infectious (传染性的) diseases are developing. In Southeast Asia and Africa, for example, Google.org will work with partners to strengthen early-warning systems and take action against growing health threats.

Google.org’s second project will invest in ways to help small and medium-sized businesses grow. Walji says microfinance (小额信贷) is generally small, short-term loans that create few jobs. Instead, he says Google.org wants to develop ways to bring investors and business owners together to create jobs and improve economic growth.

Google.org will also give money to help two climate-change programs announced earlier this year. One of these programs studies ways to make renewable (再生的) energy less costly than coal-based energy. The other is examining the efforts being made to increase the use of electric cars.

The creators of Google have promised to give Google.org about one percent of company profits and one percent of its total stock value every year. Aleem Walji says this amount may increase in the future.

36. The purpose of Google’s investments is to ________.

A) help poor people

B) develop new technology

C) expand its own business

D) increase the power of information

37. According to Aleem Walji, the company’s first project is to ________.

A) set up a new system to warn people of infectious diseases
