How important is music? When they are asked this question, students and parents usually answer that music is nice, but not very important. It is often considered only as entertainment, but not the first choice for education. This opinion is shortsighted (短视的). In fact, music education is necessary and important for all students.

Music tells us who we are. Music reflects (反映) the creators‘ thinking and values, as well as the social environment it came from. For example, just as Mozart music represents a lifestyle, rock music (摇滚乐) represents a lifestyle, too. The jazz(爵士乐) influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came form American musical traditions.

Music provides a kind of ability to know the world in a different way. Science explains how the sun rises and sets. Music explores the emotive(情感的) meanings. We need every possible way to discover and respond (回应) to our world because no one way can get it all.

Music is a form of thought, as powerful as science. It is a way we human beings ―talk‖ to each other. Through the language we express our feelings, our discoveries, our ideas, our imagination and our hopes so that they can be shared with others. When we do not let our children receive good music education, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses. Science does not tell us what it means to be human. Music does.

So music education is much more necessary than people generally realize.

Good communication skills are key to success in life, work and relationships. Without effective(有效的) communication, a message can turn into error, misunderstanding, or even disaster.

Communication is the process by which we exchange information between people. To communicate well is to understand and to be understood. Communication can be successful only when both the sender and the receiver understand the same information.

In today's highly informational and technological environment, it has become more important to have good communication skills. Here are some important steps to communicate effectively.

Know what you want to say and why. Understand clearly the purpose of your message. Know to whom you are communicating and why.

How will you say it? We all know that it's not always what you say, but how you say it , that matters. Begin by making eye contact. You show trust and confidence when you look at others in the eyes when you speak. Second, pay attention to your body language, since it can say so much more than your words. By standing with your arms easily at your side, you tell others that you are open to hearing what they have to say.

Communication is a two-way street. After you have said what you have to say, stop and listen. Practise your listening skills. Be considerate of others are talking, listen carefully and never cut them off.

For example, just as Mozart music

represents a lifestyle, rock music (摇滚乐) represents a lifestyle, too. The jazz(爵士乐) influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came form American musical traditions.

Music provides a kind of ability to know the world in a different way. Science

explains how the sun rises and sets.

Without

effective(有效的) communication, a message can turn into error, misunderstanding, or even disaster.

Communication is the process by which we exchange information between people. To

communicate well is to understand and to be understood.

In the United States, children start school when they are five years old. In some

states they must stay in school until they are sixteen. Most students are seventeen or

eighteen years old when they leave secondary(中等的)schools. There are two kinds of

schools in the United States: public schools and private(私立的)schools . Most children

go to public schools. Their parents do not have to pay for their education because the

schools receive money from the government. If a child goes to a private school, his

parents have to get enough money for his schooling. Some parents still prefer private

schools, though they are much more expensive. Today about half of the high school

students go to universities after they finish the secondary school. A student at state

university does not have to pay very much if his parents live in that state. But many

students work while they are studying at universities. In this way they develop good

W: To be honest, I feel like a failure. At the start of the school year, our teacher thought that my English was good enough for me to join a new class for Internet learners. After two months of study in the online class, I think my English got worse.

M: What was the problem with the online class?

W: Lots of things. For one, I was separated from my best friend. But the biggest problem was that I didn't have anyone to help me. Without a teacher to tell me what to do, I never knew what to do in class. I was so discouraged. Needless to say, my English didn't improve at all.

W: What?

M: I mean, you are responsible for your own studies, not your teacher or your friends. Maybe you should have worked harder to do well.

Transcript:

Music is not air. Neither is it water. But for many senior high students, music is an important part of life. This result was found following a teen magazine's summer survey on readers' attitudes to music. Nearly 10,300 readers replied to the survey.

Over half, 52 percent, said that they listen to music whenever they are free. Just 0.5 percent of students said they never listen to music. Most listen to both English and Chinese songs.

But, the survey showed that students have very different tastes and enjoy a wide variety of styles. About 32 percent of students listen to Pop music. Behind Pop came R&B, Country, Rock, Hip-hop and others.

Parents have the least effect on students' tastes and do not enjoy the same music. Just three percent of students listen to music that their parents introduced them to.
