Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States. It’s the center of the national government. It’s a busy, working city with a large population. But what is more, Washington is also a city of history and culture.

Washington was created in 1790, when Congress (the highest lawmaking body of the U.S.A. ) decided to place the nation’s new capital in the east of the country. It was built half-way between the northern and the southern states of the America. And of course it was named after George Washington, the first president of the United States.

There are many tourists’ sights in Washington. Perhaps the most important tourist sight is the Capital Building. This house is the Congress.

Another world-famous building in Washington is the White House. This is the home and office of the President of the United States. Most visitors are, however, surprised by how small the White House actually is.

Washington is also a great culture city. The Library of Congress contains one of the largest library collections in the world. The Smithsonian Museum holds the nation’s largest collection of cultural materials. And the John F. Kennedy Center is a famous center of art and culture. It has many great musical and theatre performances throughout the year. 41. The writer mainly talks about ______________. A. Washington C. buildings and sights in Washington

B. the history of Washington

D. the history and culture of Washington

42. The White House impresses the people most for __________. A. its white color

B. its size

C. its history D. it as the home and office of the president

43. The writer introduces Washington in the order of ____________.

A. general introduction, history, sights and culture B. population, history and culture

C. general introduction , history, sights, buildings and culture D. history and culture

B

Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered impolite for a man to smoke in the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in the room.

Customs are also different from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or on the right of a woman in your country ? Or doesn’t it matter? What about table manners? Should you leave your hands on your laps or on the table?

The American and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seats to a woman, and so will most Americans. Promptness is important both in England and in America. That is if a dinner invitation is for seven o’clock, the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay.

The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable –especially if they are your guests. There is an old story about a man who gave a very formal dinner party. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were amused or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable. 44. A few years ago, if a man smoked on the street, he would be considered______.

A. rich B. funny C. polite 45. The American and the British______.

A . don’t speak the same language C. don’t have social customs in common

B. share a lot of the customs D. have the same social customs D. impolite

46. Most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seats to a woman, ____.

A. so will a few Americans C. so will most Americans

B. but most Americans won’t D. but none of Americans will

47. If a dinner invitation is for seven o’clock the guest is supposed to arrive______.

What time is it? Most people are pretty accurate in their answer. And if you don’t know for sure, it’s very likely that you can find out. There may be a watch on your wrist; there may be a clock on the wall, desk, or computer screen; or maybe you’re riding in a car that has a clock in the dashboard (仪表板).

Even if you don’t have a timepiece of some sort nearby, your body keeps its own beat. Humans have an internal clock that regulates (调节) the beating of our heart, the pace of our breathing, the discharge (排出) of chemicals within our bloodstream, and many other bodily functions. Time is something from which we can’t escape. Even if we ignore it, it’s still going by, ticking away, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour. So the main issue in using your time well is, “Who’s in charge?” We can allow time to slip by and let it be our enemy. Or we can take control of it and make it our ally.

By taking control of how you spend your time, you’ll increase your chances of becoming a more

successful student. Perhaps more importantly, the better you are at managing the time you devote to your studies, the more time you will have to spend on your outside interests.

The aim of time management is not to schedule every moment so we become slaves of a timetable that governs every waking moment of the day. Instead, the aim is to permit us to make informed choices as to how we use our time. Rather than letting the day go by, largely without our awareness, what we are going to discuss next can make us better able to control time for our own purposes.

21. The underlined word “ally” in Para. 3 most likely means somebody or something that is ______.

A. your slave and serves you B. your supporter and helps you

C. under your control and obeys you D. under your influence and follows you

22. The author intends to tell us that time ______.

A. could be regulated by a timepiece such as a clock or a watch

B. could be managed by the internal clock of human bodies

C. should be well managed for our own interest

D. should be saved for outside interests 23. In the next part, the author would most probably discuss with you ______.

A. how to keep up with the times B. how to make up for lost time C. how to have a good time D. how to make good use of time

B

We experience different forms of the Sun’s energy every day. We can see its light and feel its warmth. The Sun is the major source of energy for our planet. It causes the evaporation (蒸发) of water from the oceans and lakes. Sunlight also provides the energy used by green plants to make their own food. These green plants then provide food for all organisms (生物) on the Earth. Much of the energy that comes from the Sun never reaches the Earth’s surface. It is either reflected or absorbed by the gases in the upper atmosphere. Of the energy that reaches the lower atmosphere, 30% is reflected by clouds or the Earth’s surface. The remaining 70% warms the surface of the planet, causes water to evaporate, and provides energy for the water cycle and weather. Only a tiny part, approximately 0.023%, is actually used by green plants to produce food.

Many gases found in the atmosphere actually reflect heat energy escaping from the Earth’s surface back to the Earth. These gases act like the glass of a greenhouse in that they allow energy from the Sun to enter but prevent energy from leaving. They are therefore called greenhouse gases. When sunlight strikes an object, some of the energy is absorbed and some is reflected. The amount reflected depends on the surface. For example, you’ve probably noticed how bright snow is when sunlight falls on it. Snow reflects most of the energy from the Sun, so it contributes to the low temperatures of winter. Dark-coloured surfaces, such as dark soil or forest, absorb more energy and help warm the surrounding air.

24. According to the passage, the root cause for weather changes on the Earth is ______.

A. the atmosphere surrounding the Earth B. water from oceans and lakes

C. energy from the Sun D. greenhouse gases in the sky

25. Only a small part of the Sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s surface because most of it is ______.

A. absorbed by the clouds in the lower atmosphere

B. reflected by the gases in the upper atmosphere

C. lost in the upper and lower atmosphere

D. used to evaporate water from the oceans and lakes

26. We learn from the passage that ______.

A. all living things on the Earth depend on the Sun for their food

B. a forest looks dark in winter because it absorbs solar energy

C. only 0.023% of the energy from the Sun is made use of on the Earth

D. greenhouse gases allow heat energy to escape from the Earth’s surface

A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. When you recognize your teen is under stress, how can parents help your teen stay calm before an exam?

Be involved. Parents need to be involved in their teen’s work. 31 What they look for is your presence — to talk, to cry, or simply to sit with them quietly. Communicate openly with your teen. Encourage your teen to express her worries and fears, but don’t let her focus on those fears.

Help them get organized. 32 Together, you and your teen can work out a time-table in which she can study for what she knows will be on the test.

Provide a calm setting. Help your teen set up a quiet place to study and protect her privacy. Give them a nutritious diet. It is important for your teen to eat a healthy, balanced diet during exam times to focus and do her best. 33 If this happens, encourage your teen to eat light meals or sandwiches. A healthy diet, rather than junk food, is best for reducing stress.

34 Persuade your teenager to get some sleep and/or do something active when she needs a real break from studying. Making time for relaxation, fun, and exercise are all important in reducing stress. Help your teen balance her time so that she will feel comfortable taking time out from studying to spend time with friends or rest.

Show a positive attitude. 35 Your panic, anxiety and blame contribute to your teen’s pressure. Make your teen feel accepted and valued for her efforts. Most importantly, reassure your teen that things will be all right , no matter what the results are.

A. A parent’s attitude will dictate their teen’s emotions.

B. Exam stress can make some teens lose their appetite.

C. They will only make the situation worse.

D. Encourage your teen to relax.

E. The best thing is simply to listen.

【2016广西桂林高考英语试题】

第三部分:阅读理解 (共两节,满分40分)

第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

With just a few minutes left before school was to start, my six-year-old son, Dustin, was pouting (撅嘴). “I don’t want to go,” he said. Ever since he’d entered the first grade, he has hated school. What’s going on? I thought as he walked slowly out of the door. If he hates school this much now, how bad will it be later on?

Every kid sometimes complains about school. But five to ten percent of kids dislike it so much that they don’t want to attend school, says Christopher Kearney, director of the Child School Refusal and Anxiety Disorders Clinic at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

If a child seems depressed or anxious about school, fakes illness to stay home, repeatedly winds up in the nurse’s or principal’s office, or refuses to talk about the school day, you should be concerned, say school psychologists Michael Martin and Cynthia Waltman-Greenwood, co-editors of “Solve Your Child’s School-Related Problems”.

Fortunately, you can usually solve the problem — sometimes very easily. In our case, my husband and I visited Dustin’s class and noticed that the teacher, fresh out of college, only called on kids who tried to sit right under her nose quickly. Dustin, who generally sat near the back, was ignored. We simply told him to move up front. He did, and his enthusiasm returned.

41. What was the author’s reaction when her son didn’t want to go to school?

A. She was worried. B. She was angry. C. She felt nothing strange. D. She felt sorry.

42. We can NOT conclude that a child hates school if he _____.

A. pretends to be ill at school time B. hates to talk about school

C. feels depressed when going to school every day D. complains about school sometimes

43. What can we learn about Dustin’s teacher from the passage?

A. She treats her pupils equally. B. She is inexperienced in her job

C. She gives poor lessons. D. She has prejudice against Dustin.

44. Dustin dislikes going to school because he _____.

A. is laughed at by his classmates B. can’t answer the teacher’s question

C. is afraid of his teacher D. feels he is being ignored in class

B

There are two dangers to be guarded against in old age. One of these is undue (过度的) absorption in the past. There is no need to live in memories, in regrets for the good old days, or in sadness about friends who are dead. One’s thoughts must be directed to the future, and to things about which there is something to be done.

It is unwise to be too attached to the youth in hopes of sucking vigor from their vitality

(活力). When your children have grown up, they want to live their own lives, and if you continue to be as interested in them as you were when they were young, you are likely to become a burden to them, unless they are cold to you.

I think a successful old age is easier for those who have strong impersonal interests involving proper activities. It is no use telling children not to make mistakes, both because they will not believe you, and because mistakes are an essential part of education. But if you are one of those who are incapable of impersonal interests, and you only concern yourself with your children and grandchildren, then you must realize that while you can still render them material services, such as making them an allowance, you must not expect that they will enjoy your company.

Some old people are afraid of death. But in fact the best way is to make your interests gradually wider and more impersonal. An individual human existence should be like a river — small at first, rushing passionately past rocks and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider and the banks move back and in the end they become merged (混和) in the sea without any visible break.

The old man who can see life in this way will not suffer from the fear of growing old and death.

45. One of the dangers to be guarded against in old age is ______.

A. the fear of getting old B. to be lost in old memories

C. to depend on themselves D. to be too impersonal

46. The author suggests that old people should ______.

A. develop impersonal interests with proper activities

B. tell their children not to make mistakes

C. concern themselves with their children【2016广西桂林高考英语试题】

D. not give their children an allowance

47. The underlined word “render” in Paragraph 3 probably means “______”.

A. return B. reward C. give D. demand

48. The author compares an individual human existence to a river because ______.

A. life is like a river, first small, and then it becomes wide

B. life is like a river finally flowing into the sea and disappearing

C. old age and death are both natural, just like a river

D. people get old and finally die naturally like a river

49. What’s the main topic of this passage?

A. Never be afraid of death. B. How to grow old successfully.

C. Never be afraid of getting old. D. Getting old is natural.

Lots of kids go through times when they’d like to change their hair. Often, it is girls who are most concerned, but boys may be interested in how their hair looks, too. Sometimes hair will change as you get older, all by itself, as when you go through puberty (青春期). Maybe it used to be lighter and now it’s darker. Or maybe it’s oilier than it used to be, and now you need to wash it more. It’s also normal, as you’re getting older, to notice your appearance more often. You might suddenly de

cide you want a hairstyle like the other kids at school have. But some styles and looks require chemical treatments and long hours in the chair at the hair salon. Some people dye their hair a different color, get a bunch of braids (穗带), or make their hair straight when it’s curly. Are these treatments OK for kids? That’s something you should discuss with your parents. At any age, any chemical or heat applied to the hair can damage the hair or cause it to break off.

Any styling that pulls hard on the hair can also hurt the skin of the head or cause hair

loss. Styling tools, such as curling irons and straightening irons, get very hot and can cause burns. And chemicals used to color, curl, or straighten hair can be very harmful if they get into your eyes or onto your skin — another reason not to try this without an adult’s help.

53. What does the word “kids” refer to in this passage?

A. Only girls. B. Only boys. C. Students. D. Boys and girls.

54. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as one of the causes for changes to a person’s hair?

In England recently three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop and waited. About five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They were just going to get on when suddenly there was a loud noise behind them. People rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted at them. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreigners seem all at sea and looked embarrassed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus that the first person who arrives at the bus stop is the first person to get on the bus.

Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to have a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he doesn't agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head means agreement. Nodding your head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria will most probably leave you thirsty .

In that country, you shake your head to mean 'yes'— a nod means 'no'. At a meal in countries on the Arabic Peninsula, you will find that your glass is repeated refilled as soon as you drink up. If you think that you have had enough, you should take the cup or glasses in your hand and give it a little shake from side to side or place your hand over the top.

In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when you are sitting talking to someone even at an important meeting. Doing this in Thailand, however, could bring about trouble. Also, you should try to avoid touching the head of an adult ——it's just not done in Thailand.

28. The British people tried to push the three gentlemen out of the way, because the gentlemen _________.

A. were foreigners B. didn't have tickets

C. made a loud noise D. didn't line up for the bus

C. have enough time and money D. make friends with the people there

30. In India it is considered impolite ___________.

A. to use the right hand for passing food at table. B. to pass food with the left hand.

C. to eat food with your hands. D. to help yourself at table.

A. a common habit B. an important manner C. a serious trouble D. a bad manner

Many of the world's famous cities are known by some special names. Paris is known

as the "City of Light". Hong Kong is the "Wall Street of Asia". One small city in

Pennsylvania may be the sweetest place on Earth. That is town of Hershey, which is

known as the "Chocolate Town". It is named after Milton Hershey, the founder of the

largest chocolate factory in the world.

Milton Hershey built his first candy factory in the early 1900s. At the time,

Hershey was developing a technique for milk chocolate. Eventually he succeeded.

Hershey was also the first to produce individually wrapped chocolate bars. His factory

grew and produced more and more types of chocolate. To this day, Hershey's chocolate

factory is the largest in the world. Hershey used his success to give back to the

community. He built a town around the factory for his employees. He gave streets fun

names like Chocolate Avenue. He built schools, parks and shops. This generous man

gave millions of dollars to charity. He built an amusement park with rides, trains for children and a swimming pool. Over the years, the town grew. People from near

and far came to visit this special town, whose beauty and fame continue to attract

lots of tourists. Every year close to three million tourists visit the Chocolate Town.

Today visitors to the city can enjoy a variety of attractions and activities.

The Hershey chocolate factory offers tours. Visitors can learn all about chocolate

and how it is made. A gift shop sells all kinds of chocolate and toys made to look

like chocolate. Even if you don't buy a souvenir, there is one thing that is impossible to forget: the wonderful aroma of fresh chocolate everywhere. In this special place

In England recently three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop and waited. About

five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They were just going to get on

when suddenly there was a loud noise behind them. People rushed onto the bus and tried

to push them out of the way. Someone shouted at them. The bus conductor came rushing

down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreigners seem all

at sea and looked embarrassed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining

up for a bus that the first person who arrives at the bus stop is the first person

to get on the bus. Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to have a pleasant

visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country.

You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the

left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he doesn't agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head means agreement.

Nodding your head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria will most probably leave

you thirsty .

In that country, you shake your head to mean 'yes'— a nod means 'no'. At a meal

in countries on the Arabic Peninsula, you will find that your glass is repeated

refilled as soon as you drink up. If you think that you have had enough, you should

take the cup or glasses in your hand and give it a little shake from side to side

or place your hand over the top.

In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when you are sitting talking to

someone even at an important meeting. Doing this in Thailand, however, could bring

about trouble. Also, you should try to avoid touching the head of an adult ——it's

just not done in Thailand.

28. The British people tried to push the three gentlemen out of the way, because the

gentlemen _________.

country, you should _________.

A. learn the language of the country B. understand the manners and customs

of the country

C. have enough time and money D. make friends with the people there

30. In India it is considered impolite ___________.

A. to use the right hand for passing food at table. B. to pass food with

the left hand.

C. to eat food with your hands. D. to help yourself at table.

31. To cross one's legs at an important meeting in Europe is _______.

High school plays a major role in shaping up your future and your whole

development. extracurricular

(课外的) activities along with the studies can be very helpful. Make yourself take

part in various activities and at the same time try to stand out in your studies.

When you move out to college these efforts that you put in may count for a lot. High school is not just about books or classes. Schools always provide

opportunities for students to socialize (社交). There are various group tasks designed

which allow the students to learn to work together.

High school is the right time for you to discover yourself and bring out some of

your hidden talents. In your lessons, you may find that you are better at English than you were earlier or have grown an interest for Math. High school also provides

many other opportunities for students to take part in. These help develop leadership

skills and management skills at an early age, which in turn is a way of preparing

students to manage and plan their careers (事业) better.

Balancing all activities is an experience in time management. If you have taken

up a part-time job along with your high school you would have to arrange your time

for studies, and extracurricular activities. Such management can go a long way in

teaching you to manage things better when you take up a job. Moreover, they help build

your character. You would be better prepared for additional stress that you may feel

sometimes.

When at high school you should pick up your classes wisely. Depending upon what

you like and your career plan you should choose suitable classes. Doing something

that you hardly like may get you very low grades as well as lose valuable time. Take

up interesting and challenging classes that would allow you to put in those extra

efforts.
