Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle, I used Tinkertoys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students. I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said:”Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today - and 45minutes each day for the rest of the week.”

A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.

Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His

Dear John,

My name is Amber and I want to share my story with you because what you've shared about life and positive energy has changed my life. This past year has been one of the hardest for me. I felt I was stuck in a position that had nothing to do with what I wanted to do with my life. In January, after two years of being together, my boyfriend left me.

I read your blog every morning as I drink my coffee at work, but it wasn't until this March that I told myself “no more negativity” as you taught readers in your blog.

Since then I've got into new habits at work to keep my energy positive. When people walk in from the front door, I'm the first face they see, so I smile big when I say good morning to them, especially on Mondays. Instead of waiting for someone to ask me for help, I offer it with an open mind. The CEO noticed my change and offered me the executive assistant position that I wanted. One of the biggest things I've taken to heart from your blog is changing my perspective on my job. Yes, it was not an important position, but when I was passionate(热情的) about it, I could make my life fulfilling.

All in all, I have to thank you somehow for having the passion to help others because it is truly inspiring to me. So thank you so much, John. My life has changed because your words pointed me in the right direction. Take care!

Yours sincerely,

Amber

London has become a cycle-friendly zone after the launch of a new bike hire scheme. It has been designed to encourage more people to cycle in and around central London.

So how does it work? First you have to sign up for the scheme to be sent a key. The key will unlock one of the bikes, which are kept at the docking stations in and around central London. You have to pay an access fee for the key and then you pay as you go, for the length of time you use the bike.

Transport for London, which runs the scheme, is hoping to have 6,000 bikes and 400 docking stations in place by the end of the year. The new hire system is hoping to ease congestion(拥挤) in London and is expected to create up to 40,000 extra cycle trips a day into the city centre. London Mayor Boris Johnson launched the scheme and said London had been filled with thousands of gleaming machines that will transform the look and feel of the streets and become as commonplace on the roads as black cabs and red buses.

However, there have been a few problems since the scheme was launched last Friday. On the first day some people found they couldn't dock their bikes properly and their usage of the bikes had not been registered. Transport for London did admit they had been expecting a few “teething problems” and have said they wouldn't charge for the first day as “a gesture of goodwill”. Some other people have criticized the lack of docking stations and locks for the bikes as well as the price it costs to hire the bicycles.

Despite the comments, the green-thinking London Mayor still seems very positive about things, saying, “My campaign for the capital to become the greatest big cycling city in the world has taken a big pedal-powered push forwards.”

Last summer, my parents and I have our family holiday in Hainan. Before the trip we book plane tickets and hotels on the Internet and got some informations about the places we were going to visit. It was very hot in Hainan that neither of us could stand the heat. Lucky for us, it rained in the first afternoon. The next day, we went to the seaside and lied on the beach, enjoying the beautiful scenery. On third day, we went shopping together and buying lots of seafood for our friends. Although the trip was short, we had great fun.

As a professor I have grown accustomed to the opinion regarding American education. We are repeatedly told that American schools are failing, that colleges are not teaching, and that the students of today are not as good as the students of the past.

There are, of course, problems with the education system. Because of economic inequality, some schools are significantly better than others and the ideas of equality of education and equality of opportunity are cruel jokes. However, the mere fact that there are some serious One stock(陈腐的) claim is that America has fallen behind the world in education in terms of performance on various tests. While the fact that America is behind other countries is a point of concern, there are at least three points worth considering here. The first is the above-mentioned economic inequality which will tend to result in poorer performance when taking the average for America. The second is that many countries have put considerable effort into improving their education systems and hence it is worth considering that America's decline is also due to the improvement of others. The third is the matter of the measures—do they, in fact, present an accurate picture of the situation? I am not claiming that the data is bad. I am merely raising a reasonable concern about how accurate our picture of education is at this time.

Another stock claim is that American students are doing badly on standardized tests. While there is clear value in assessment, it is reasonable to consider whether or not such tests are a proper and adequate measure of education. It is also worth considering whether the puzzle with these tests is itself causing damage to education. That is, as teachers teach for the tests and students learn for the tests, it might be the case that what is being taught is not what should be taught and what is being learnt is not what should be learnt.

1.According to the professor, many people's attitude towards American colleges is________.

A.negative B.positive

C.approving D.indifferent

2.What does the underlined word “dire” in the second paragraph mean?

A.Exact or precise.

B.Extremely serious or terrible.

C.Fair or objective.

D.Long and boring.

3.Judging by the text, the claims are centred on________.

A.what should be taught in the American classroom

B.fair judgement of American education

C.American students' performance on tests

D.an accurate picture of American colleges

4.The passage is written mainly to________.

A.defend American education

B.show dissatisfaction with American education

【贵州英语高考题2016】

C.explain why American students do badly on tests

D.offer advice on American education reform

Dining in a completely dark room, unaware what's on your plate while sitting next to a way to spend a rainy night in London.

Dans le Noir, close to London's financial district, is a restaurant full of blind waiters and waitresses who become your eyes around the restaurant, whose original Paris branch opened in 2004.

In the bar with the light, you choose whether you want the fish, meat or vegetables, but the dishes themselves remain a secret, as do the ingredients of the “surprises” cocktails. Bags, coats and devices(设备) that light up, including watches and mobile phones, are kept in the bar. Placing your hand on the shoulder of your guide, you are led to a table in a black dining room that seats up to 60 people. And it is dark.

The waiters tell you when the food is being placed down in front of you, and then the fun begins, trying to get food into your mouth, then identifying just what is on your plate, and finally whether you have missed any of it.

It's also a great chance to break social conventions and eat using your fingers. Those same fingers are also the only way you can tell how much wine you're pouring into your glass.

The happy atmosphere in the dining room also makes the night memorable. You can't really avoid talking to the person next to you at the long table and guessing what the dishes are certainly provides adequate fuel for the conversations.

All will be revealed at the end of the meal when you are led back out into the lighted bar. Not only do you finally get to see what you've just been eating but also who you've been talking to for the last 90 minutes.

5.What does the underlined word “intriguing” in the first paragraph mean?

A.Terrible. B.Interesting.

C.Expensive. D.New.

6.According to the text, Dans le Noir________.

A.is far from London's financial district

B.has its first branch opened in Britain

C.is very popular among blind customers

D.has a dining room which can seat up to 60 people

7.We know from the text that the customers in Dans le Noir________.

A.are forbidden to eat with their fingers

B.can talk to the strangers at the long table

C.will book the menu in a dark bar

D.can take their mobile phones into the dining room

8.What's the main purpose of the text?

A.To help blind people find a job in restaurants.

B.To show how to open a restaurant with a new idea.

C.To show how to enjoy the time in a dark restaurant.

D.To attract customers to Dans le Noir.
