Across Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and daughters rush to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers. But, according to a new study, we should be placing a higher value on motherhood all year.

Mothers have long known that their home workload was just as heavy as paid work. Now, the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labors, they would earn as much as £172,000 a year.

The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do, as well as the hours they are working, to determine the figure. This would make their yearly income £30,000 more than the Prime Minister earns.

By analyzing the numbers, it found the average mother works 119 hours a week, 40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate and 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers with children under 18, it found that, on most days, mums started their routine work at 7 am and finished at around 11 pm.

To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labour, it suggested some of the roles that mums could take on, including housekeeper, part-time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer. Being a part-time lawyer, at £48,98 an hour, would prove to be the most profitable of the “mum jobs”, with psychologist a close second.

The study shows mothers matter all year long and not just on Mother’s Day. The emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never-ending, but children are also sources of great joy and happiness. Investing(投入) in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent.

21. How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister?

A.£30,000. B.£202,000. C.£172,000. D.£142,000.【新乡市2015-2016期末高二下英语试卷答案】

22. What is stressed in the last paragraph?

A. mothers’ importance shows in family all year long.

B. Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return.

C. Mothers’ devotion to children can hardly be calculated.

D. The sacrifices mothers make are huge but worthwhile.

23. What can we conclude from the study?

A. Mothers’ working hours should be largely reduced.

B. Mothers’ labor is of a higher value than it is realized.

C. Mothers should balance their time for work and rest.

D. Mothers should be freed from housework for social life.

B

I log onto a computer at the doctor’s office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room.

There, a robotic nurse directs me onto a device and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later, in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms and gives me a prescription (处方). I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having met another human being.

【新乡市2015-2016期末高二下英语试卷答案】

When I call my dentist’s office and actually get a human being on the line, I am thrilled. And when I see the introduction of yet more self-service checkout stations at the grocery store, I feel like shouting, “When it comes to cashiers, make mine human, please! ”

After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon (优惠券) for items you are buying. Even more than that, real-life cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother’s day. A cashier may also show compassion (同情)for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse.

What technological device would do any of this? I don’t want to go back to the Stone Age, but I’m also worried about a world run by machines. Sometimes when you’re chatting with someone,

you discover things you need to know. Maybe a receptionist needs prayers said for a sick child. Maybe a salesperson can offer a bit of encouragement to a customer who is feeling tired.

Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine. But they lack an element so important to everyday life.

Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart. It is something no machine will ever have. It is being human that encourages us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment.

24. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first two paragraphs?

A. To describe a possible future scene where robots take control of our life.

B. To indicate high technology can make our future life very easy.

C. To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors.

D. To predict how technology can affect the way we see a doctor in the future.

25. Why does the author prefer being served by humans rather than by robots?

A. Robots don’t offer to give store coupons.

B. Robots can’t provide efficient services.

C. Robots are indifferent and emotionless.

D. Robots are unable to do a job as well as humans.

26. What’s the author’s attitude towards machines?

A. He wishes one day they would come to life.

B. He is absolutely against their existence in his life.

C. He is afraid they would take the place of human beings.

D. He doesn’t like they affect his life too much.

C

The world’s most popular banana is facing a major health crisis. According to a new study, a disease caused by a powerful fungus(真菌)is killing the Cavendish banana, which accounts for 99% of the banana market around the globe. The disease, called Tropical Race 4 (TR4), has affected banana crops in southeast Asia for decades. In recent years, it has spread to the Middle East and the African nation of Mozambique. Now experts fear the disease will show up in Latin America, where the majority of the world’s bananas are grown.

Once a banana plant is infected with TR4, it cannot get water and nutrients. TR4 lives in soil, and can easily end up on a person’s boots. If the contaminated boots are then worn on a field where Cavendish bananas are grown, the disease could be transferred. “Once a field has been with the disease, you can’t grow Cavendish bananas there anymore,” Ploetz says. Cavendish bananas are popular among consumers. Ploetz says, “Consumers like the way Cavendish looks and tastes.”

But Cavendish is also particularly attacked by TR4. “And they are all easily infected with this disease. So once one plant gets infected, it just runs like wildfire throughout that entire plantation.” Bananas have faced this kind of crisis before. In the mid-1900s, the most popular banana at the time was nearly wiped out by an earlier version of TR4.

One solution to the problem, Ploetz says, is to try to develop new bananas that can resist TR4. “It really needs to be done, but we don’t have it yet.” He notes that we still have time before we need to worry about the Cavendish banana disappearing.

27. The underlined word “contaminated” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by “______”.

A. replaced B. supplied C. prevented D. infected

28. If a banana plant is infected with TR4, the banana plant will probably die of ____.

A. thirst B. cold C. heat D. poison

29. We can infer that the disease, called TR4 can ________.

A. last for a long time in the soil B. be cured easily with chemicals

C. be prevented from spreading easily D. damage a person’s boots

30. which of the following is the best title?

A. Hello, Bananas! B. Say No to Bananas!

C. Bananas or TR4? D. Bye-Bye, Bananas?

This summer, I was part of something that I have carried with me every day since. That was an experience that changed my life. The Kentucky YMCA has a program called Y-Corps, which are service trips of around 20 students. This summer, two trips were made across Kentucky, one down south and another trip up north.

I was on the Y-Corps service to the North in the Indianapolis, Indiana, and our trip began at the end of July. I had butterflies flying around me as my parents drove me to Louisville, where the Service to the North team would set off on a nine-day journey in a school bus. 1 knew some of the team members from previous Y-Conferences, but there were many that I had never met, and I had never participated in a service trip like this before. Thought I was nervous, I was also ready to try something completely out of my comfort zone. Once we loaded the bus with our lightly packed suitcases and sleeping bags, we said our goodbyes to our parents and departed for an adventure that changed all of our lives.

With the Kentucky Y,s motto: “Participate, don’t anticipate (,,,we had no idea where we headed. Road signs were our only clue of where we would be stopping. We did service work at a Middle Way House in Indiana, a Detroit Market Garden, a Pennsylvania YMCA for an invasive species clean-up, the Upper Main Line Y in Pennsylvania to spend time with children at a summer camp,a Hurricane Sandy clean-up in Jersey Shore and the National Mall in Washington

D.C. We slept on floors of local YMCAs that would take us in for a night, and some nights we didn’t have the opportunity to shower. We had late nights on the road driving from city to city, and early mornings to start the day journaling and reflecting on the day before.

Though we were physically exhausted from the hard work, we still enjoyed the time to experience the culture of the areas we were in.

24. For the author the Service Trip to the North is .

A. meaningful B. expensive C. valueless D. fruitless

25. The Service Trip to the North started off from __ .

A.Kentucky B. Indiana C. Louisville D, Indianapolis

26 .What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

A. The team members carried a lot of luggage on the trip.

B. The members in the team were all familiar to the author.

C. The author had taken part in such kind of service before this one.

D. The author was nervous but willing to face something uncomfortable.

27. We can infer from the last two paragraphs that ____ .

A. they were physically exhausted and didn’t enjoy the hard work

B. they didn’t know where to go without road signs

C. their trip was packed with hard work and cultural experiences

D. they didn’t have enough water for a bath at night

C

Ode to Joy (《欢乐颂》),a 42-episodes TV series, is about five young women living on the 22nd floor of Shanghai’s “Ode to Joy” high-rise community. They become friends while pursuing love and career advancement. Since its appearance on April 18, Ode to Joy has been praised for its realistic description of the hidden struggles of city life. 'The audience can relate to the characters since their experiences can be traced back to real life too,” commented the Dahe Daily. “Even better, female audiences can find themselves in one or two of the characters because the characters embody feminine archetypes (原:型.)found throughout the society.”

But the idea of following a group of women as they lead a city life is hardly a pioneering concept. In many ways, Ode to Joy resembles American TV series like Sex and the City (1998-2004) and Desperate Housewives (2004-2012). These two series were praised for their feminist themes, but they also employed well-known female archetypes to illustrate the range of dilemmas women face. Deborah A. Macey, a communications professor at Saint Louis University in the US, divides these archetypes up into four ways: the iron maiden, the sex object, the child, and the mother. “The iron maiden is portrayed as masculine and career-oriented. The sex object owns her sexuality and genuinely loves her body. The child archetype is naive, optimistic, and dim-witted. The mother archetype connects the characters in the series and serves as the dominant storyteller,” Macey said on the online media forum “In Media Res”.

Sounds familiar? Yes, these features can be seen in the characters of Ode to

Joy. Andy Me (Liu Tao). for instance, partly embodies the iron maiden role. She's super smart, rational and direct. She moves from the US to Shanghai and takes the position of CFO at a top Chinese company. Fan Shcngmei (Jiang Xin) can be seen as the “mother” in the scries. Despite the fact that she s in charge of her own family issues, she takes her friends under her wing and stands up for them. Qu Xiaoxiao (Wang ziwen), the sexy and beautiful girl bom with silver spoon, perfectly illustrates what is bitter-sweet relationship between friends and lovers. With that being said. Ode to Joy doesn't lack creativity. It assigns the “child” role to two characters-the straightforward, naive Qiu Yingying (Yang Zi), and the good-tempered, hard-working Guan Ju'er (Qiao Xin).

It is difficult for doctors to help a person with a damaged brain. Without enough blood, the brain lives for only three to five minutes. More often the doctors can’t fix the damage. Sometimes, they are afraid to try something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain. The doctors might make the person worse if he operates on the brain.

Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain.

Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, then he operated on them. He made the monkeys’ blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys’ brains. When the brain’s temperature was 10℃, Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blood again. After their operations the monkeys were like what they had been before. They were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.

If we want to deal with the association(社交) between boys and girls properly, here are some “dos and don’ts” for you to follow.

Keep a normal and healthy state of mind. Our schools and classes are made up of boys and girls. It is very nature for the boys and girls to make friends with each other. We should make as many friends as possible. We should keep in touch with the other sex in public instead of in secret.

Don’t be too nervous or too shy. If you are a shy person, you can also find a way out. You can make friends with the students who have the same interest and hobby as you. As both of you have much in common, you may have much to talk about. If you keep doing like that, little by little, you will gladly find you are also as free to express yourself as others.

Twelve years ago, I arrived in Central Florida from Puerto Rico. I had heard of a job opportunity and decided to pursue it, but it never became a reality. I quickly learned that being alone without resources in an unfamiliar city was not a comfortable situation to be in.

Once my limited funds ran out I became homeless and spent a year and a half living on the streets of Orlando. Apart from feeling not being noticed and missing my family, I had to face another challenge—hunger.

For the first time in my life, I, as a foreign man, who had lived my life in the relative comfort of the middle class, understood the frustration someone feels when they don’t get enough to eat. I clearly remembered having run a distance of more than 7 miles on many occasions just to make it to a local feeding program before they closed at 7 pm.

Once the need for food was met, the next challenge would arise—where to find a place to sleep for the night. Fortunately, local programs like the Coalition for the Homeless, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Wayne Densch Center were an important part of my ability to survive my painful experience.

With the help of these programs, I was accepted by a college scholarship program through the Coalition and obtained two degrees from Valencia.

My experience has helped me understand that devoting my life to helping others offers lasting rewards. Today, I am employed as Childhood Hunger Programs Manager at Second Harvest Food Bank and oversee the summer feeding, Hi-Five Kids Pack, and Kids Café programs. I am so proud to be able to distribute food resources to those wonderful programs and help hundreds more like me.

12. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?

A. The author wouldn’t go to Central Florida again.

B. The author felt hopeless in Central Florida at that time.

C. Florida was not a good place for people living there at that time.

D. People like to live with friends in a familiar city.

13. Why did the author run a distance of over 7 miles on many occasions?

A. Because he didn’t want to be late for work there.

B. Because he desired to get some food to eat.

C. Because he went there to help the poor.

D. Because he helped distribute food resources to the poor.

14. Before being accepted by a college scholarship program, the author A. had lived with his relatives happily B. had won his degree in a university

C. had been struggling financially D. had lost hope of facing the future

15. From his experience, the author learns that A. people can learn a lesson from difficulties

B. people may suffer a lot in an unfamiliar city

C. people should not give up even in trouble

D. people might be rewarded if they’re kind to others

What is superpower in your opinion? What superpower would you want to have if possible?

Dreaming about whether you would want to read minds, see through walls, or have superhuman strength may sound silly, but it actually gets to the heart of what really matters in your life.

Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world.

They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess: the power to make a difference in the lives of others.

We’re not saying that everyone needs to contribute their lives to the poor. Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don’t be a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you’re older. But why not start now?

Our own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.

25. Why does the author say they are inspired every day?

A. They possess different kinds of superpowers
