In the mid-believed that doing_any_more_than_necessary_was_wasted_effort.One day, this approach threw me into embarrassment.

In Mrs.Totten's eighth-grade math class at Central Avenue School in Anderson,Indiana,we were learning to add and subtract decimals (小数).

Our teacher typically assigned daily homework, which would be recited in class the following day.On most days, our grades were based on our oral answers to homework questions.

Mrs.Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had appeared on our homework sheets. She would start either at the front or the back of the classroom and work toward the other end.

Since I was seated near the middle of about 35 students,it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to answer. This particular time,I had completed my usual two or three problems according to my calculations.

What I failed to expect was that several students were absent, which threw off my estimate. As Mrs.Totten made her way from the beginning of the class,I desperately tried to determine which math problem I would get.I tried to work it out before she got to me,but I had brain freeze and couldn't function.

When Mrs.Totten reached my desk, she asked what answer I'd got for problem No.14.“I...I didn't get anything,” I answered, and my face felt warm.

“Correct,”she said.

It turned out that the correct answer was zero.

What did I learn that day?First, always do all your homework.Second,in real life it isn't always what you say but how you say it that matters.Third,I would never make it as a mathematician. If I could choose one school day that taught me the most,it would be that one.

below the knee and his feet twisted. He went under numerous operations to ease his pain, and eventually both limbs(下肢) had to be cut off.But despite his disability and later losing the sight in one eye,Mr.Cameron still gained a successful career as a stockbroker(股票经纪人). After moving to England from Scotland as a child,he

married Mary and the couple raised four children at the

family home in Peasemore,Berks.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph two years ago,

the_Tory_leader described the experience of growing up

with a father with a disability. He told how once they were

on holiday in Cornwall,he overheard someone rudely

saying.“That guy's wearing funny boots.” Mr.Cameron said

he thought to himself,“That's odd,no one ever says that.”

In an ITV interview before the general election,

Mr.Cameron said of his father,“He's an amazingly brave

man because he was born with no heels—quite a

disability. But the glass with him was half-full,normally

with something alcoholic.I

think I got my sense of

optimism(乐观) from him.”

Mr.Cameron also appeared with his parents at an event and said that they understood his idea for “a Big Society”.

“They showed me how a big society could work every day I was growing up,” he said,“I know what are my responsibilities.” Mr.Cameron's disability is not thought to have played any part in his death aged 77.Friends said he was “so proud” to see his son become Prime Minister in May,and had visited 10 Downing Street and Chequers. However, the family's various holiday plans meant that he did not get to meet his latest granddaughter Florence, who was delivered to the PM's wife Samantha last month.

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A.The life and character of Mr.Cameron senior.

B.A huge hero figure in the eyes of son.

C.The newly elected Prime Minister.

D.A disabled father and his career.

2.In the text “the Tory leader” refers to ________.

A.Mr.Cameron senior

B.Prime Minister David Cameron

C.the Daily Telegraph

D.a leader in the government

根据该词后面的described the experience of growing up with a father with a disability可以看出这位正在描述父亲的人应该是Mr.Cameron senior的儿子,即新任首相戴维·卡梅伦,故选B项。

答案 B

3.When Mr.Cameron heard the rude words,________.

A.he exploded with anger all of a sudden

B.he thought the man was too foolish【

C.he was shocked to hear that

D.he expected it a long time ago

4.According to Mr.Cameron,“a Big Society” means ______.

A.there are numbers of families in the society

B.people take up their duties in the society

C.much freedom will be offered to the people

D.many events will take place in the future

5.From the last paragraph we can know that ________.

A.the disability caused Mr.Cameron senior death

B.Mr.Cameron senior took pride in having such a son

C.Mr.Cameron senior lived in 10 Downing Street

D.Florence was adopted by the PM's wife

Friends said he was “so proud” to see his son become Prime Minister in May可知,老卡梅伦因儿子成为首相而感到自豪,故选B。

However, the family's various holiday plans meant that he did not get to meet his latest

granddaughter Florence, who was delivered to the PM's wife Samantha last month.

Mr.Smith,______teacher we all admire,works in„.

years later,______new and beautiful town will be infront of us.

状语从句涵盖面较广,建议考生多温习时间状语从句(the moment/immediately,by the time,be about to do/bedoing„when等)和条件状语从句(as long as,unless等),当然不要忽略while,though,now that等引导的状语从句。

Recently the issue has aroused great concern among„

主体句:to begin with, then, furthermore, finally

Taking all these into account, we„

To solve the above-mentioned problem, we must„

Earth Hour started in Australia with millions of homes and businesses turning off their lights for one hour. Man is facing a big problem about global warming which arouses people’s great awareness and concerns. Now, people are all joining together with a worldwide effort to show that it’s possible to take action on the

issue.

Dozens of hotel, office, buildings, shopping malls and restaurants switched their lights off.People joined in activities such as candle-lit dinners and star-gazing parties as a response to the call for “going dark”.There is no denying that all above-mentioned have brought about good changes among people. It is reasonable to maintain that we should keep the act in mind all the time instead of instant performance.

There is no easy method of global warming, but Earth Hour is a message of hope and a message of act. It will have a great influence on people’s attitude towards global warming. We should take responsibility and get involved in working towards a bright future.Everyone can make a difference.

In recent years, teachers of introductory courses in Asian American studies have been facing a dilemma nonexistent a few decades ago, when hardly any texts in that field were available. Today, excellent anthologies(文选)and other introductory texts exist, and books on individual Asian Americans are published almost weekly. Even professors who are experts in the field find it difficult to decide which of these to assign to students; non-experts who teach in related areas and are looking for writings for and by Asian American to include in survey courses are in an even worse position.

A complicating factor has been the continuing lack of specialized one-volume reference works on Asian Americans, such as biographical dictionaries or desktop encyclopedias. Asian American studies professors might feel more free to include more challenging Asian American material in their introductory reading lists, since good reference works allow students to acquire on their own the background information necessary to interpret difficult or unfamiliar material.
