A student is learning to speak British English. He wonders: Can I communicate with Americans? Can they understand me? Learners of English often ask: What are the differences between British and American English? How important are these differences?

Certainly, there are some differences between British and American English. There are a few differences in grammar. On October 6, 2009, Charles K. Kao was awarded the Isohels Prize in Phys/cuss forth/s contributions to the study of the transmission flight in optical fibers （先纤）and fiber communications．He said, "I am absolutely speechless and never expected such an honor．"

On October 6, 2009, Charles K. Kao was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the study of the transmission flight in optical fibers （光纤）and fiber communications. He said, "I am absolutely speechless and never expected such an honor."

Kao was born in Shanghai in 1933, but his ancestral home is in Jinshan, now part of Shanghai. He studied Chinese classics at home with his brother, under a tutor. He also studied English and French at an international school in Shanghai. Kao's family moved to Hong Kong in 1948 where he completed his secondary education. He did his undergraduate （本科）studies in electrical engineering at Woolwich Polytechnic obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree issued the University of London.

Kao met his future wife in London alert graduation. They were married in 1959 in London, and have two children, a son and a younger daughter, both of whom now work in Silicon Valley, California.

He then pursued research and received his PhD in 1965 from University of London while working at Standard Telecommunication Laboratories in Harlow, England. It is there that Kao did his first groundbreaking work as an engineer and researcher.

Kao has been suffering slightly from a disease since early 2004. In the next seven weeks, more than one million people walked into Disneyland.
