One of the largest youth organizations in the world is the 4-H,an organization of clubs for young people between 9 and 19.The main purpose of 4-H is to provide young people with the practical skills and understanding they will need to become useful members of their communities. The four H’s stand for head, heart, hands, and health.

When4-H clubs first began in America in the early 1900s,members were mostly young people from rural areas. The focus was on farm projects, such as raising pigs and growing and canning food.Today over 75%of the club members come from towns, cities, and suburbs, and hundreds of projects exist, each adapted to its geographical area. While rural districts choose conservation, forestry, and farm management projects, projects in urban areas often involve nutrition, health, car care, and money management.

The 4-H program in America is a joint service of the U.S.Department of Agriculture, state universities, and county governments.Additional funding(资助)is provided by business firms and private organizations. Members of the clubs are guided by volunteer adult leaders and their teenage assistants. In the clubs,4-H’ers learn about and work on solving serious problems that face their communities, issues like environmental protection and community safety.

In addition to the 4-H clubs in the U.S.states and territories, more than eighty countries have adapted the 4-H idea to fit their own needs. In the less developed countries, many clubs offer courses in proper nutrition and in new farming technology. 24.What is the 4-H? A.A fitness club.

John Boyne is best known for his hugely successful novel,The in the Striped Pyjamas. Now he has taken on the First World War,a similarly important historical event.Boyne’s novel,Stay Where You and Then Leave is the story of Alfie Summerfield,a boy whose father swept up in the excitement of the outbreak of the war and joins the army.Alfie’s dad writes to his wife and son from the benches(战壕),after a couple of years the letters stop coming.

According to Alfie’s mum,that’s because dad is“on a secret

mission for the government”.Alfie, however, suspects she might be lying and sets out to uncover the truth. At first he doesn’t get far in discovering the mystery.Times are hard:his mum works as a nurse but can’t make ends meet,so Alfie starts missing school to help out, earning money as a shoeshine boy at King’s Cross Station in London. Then he has an amazing stroke of luck:one of his customers is an army doctor whose papers are blown away by the wind.Alfie helps to gather them, and in the process, discovers the true whereabouts of his father.

I’d been enjoying the story up to this point.Alfie is an easy character to like, and the relationship with his troubled mum is well-written.The other people in Alfie’s wodd—his loving dad,his slighfly crazy granny have depth, too. However, from that moment at King’s Cross, there’s an increasingly fairytale-like feel to things, even though the story of Alfie’s search to find his shell-shocked dad and bring him home is grounded in detail. There are more coincidences and the ending is fairytale, too.

There are other problems too.Early on,we are told that Alfie had often heard Prime Minister Asquith’s name on the radio, which would have been difficult in 1914 as the BBC only started broadcasting in 1922.And yet my final judgment on this book is positive.Stay Where You Are and Then Leave has its faults, but all in all it is a good, solid, engaging read. 28.The writer of this passage mainly wants to_________. A.compare two novels B.introduce John Boyne C.tell a moving story A.In a hospital.

D.review a new book B.In a trench.

29.Where does Alfie most probably find his father?

but Are is Boy

Although most hitchhikers(搭便车的人)are people, passers—by tend to ignore them because they are cautious about giving rides to strangers. But what will they do if they come across a

hitchhiking robot? Will they take it to its destination or will they just leave the helpless machine by the wayside?

That is the answer Canadian professors,David Harris Smith and Frauke Zeller, who study the relationship between humans and technology, are seeking for after they came up with the idea of building a hitchhiking robot.

HitchBOT is built with cheap household items. Thanks to a PC tablet,GPS tracker and

camera, hitchBOT not only can send its thoughts and pictures to the general public, but also can answer general questions and keep drivers entertained with small talks. The smart robot is even able to quote(引用)interesting facts about the areas it has passed through.

Not surprisingly, many people are doubtful about hitchBOT’s ability. Most people think the cute robot will be damaged by someone.Actually, they are all wrong. The robot hitchhiked all the way from Halifax,Nova Scotia,to Victoria,British Columbia,a distance of 3,700 miles. It was first picked up on July 27th by an elderly couple. It not only reached its destination on August

21st,but also had some amazing adventures along the way.It visited national parks, went fishing, went camping, and even attended a wedding where it experienced its first dance and interrupted the bride’s speech.

In addition to helping it get to its destination, its Canadian fans have gone out to ensure its safety-from coveting the robot with a plastic cape(披肩)to help keep it dry to ensuring that it stays healthy with motor oil.

24.Why is the hitchhiking robot built?

A.To help passers-by reach their destinations.

B.To find out how people might react to it.

Although most hitchhikers(搭便车的人)are people, passers—by tend to ignore them because they are cautious about giving rides to strangers. But what will they do if they come

across a hitchhiking robot? Will they take it to its destination or will they just leave the helpless machine by the wayside?

That is the answer Canadian professors,David Harris Smith and Frauke Zeller, who study the relationship between humans and technology, are seeking for after they came up with the idea of building a hitchhiking robot.

HitchBOT is built with cheap household items. Thanks to a PC tablet,GPS tracker and camera, hitchBOT not only can send its thoughts and pictures to the general public, but also can answer general questions and keep drivers entertained with small talks.

It not only reached its destination on August 21st,but also had some amazing adventures along the way.It visited national parks, went fishing, went camping, and even attended a wedding where it experienced its first dance and interrupted the bride’s speech.

C.To see if it will give tides to strangers.

D.To entertain drivers on their way.

25.The hitchBOT can do all of the following except_________.

A.talking with the driver B.dancing with people

C.sending its thoughts and pictures D.answering any question raised

26.How long did it take the hitchBOT to reach its destination?

A.Nearly a month. B.Over one month. C.Two months.D.One week.
