Text 1

W: What time is your train leaving?

M: It leaves at ten. I’ve got fifty minutes left.

W: You’d better hurry, or you won’t be able to catch it.

Text 2

M: Nice weather we’re having, don’t you think? W: No. It is too cold. M: I think it is just right.

W: I’d prefer it a few degrees warmer.

Text 3

M: Now, let’s stop talking and get going. I need to be in my office in fifteen minutes, or I’ll be late for a meeting. W: Okay, bye.

Text 4

M: This course is really difficult.

W: I don’t think it’s all that bad. And we’ll benefit a lot from it. M: So, you’re taking it too? W: That’s true.

Text 5

W: Could you turn that off? I can’t hear myself think. M: What?

W: The radio. M: Oh! Sorry.

Text 6

W: Hi Michael! I heard you just came back from a holiday. M: Yes. I stayed for a week in China, and five days in India.

W: You do travel a lot, don’t you? Last year, you went to Norway, right?

M: Well, I’ve been to quite some countries, but not yet to Norway. Last summer, I toured Russia for two weeks.

Text 7

M: Sally, do you like seafood? W: Yes, of course.

M: Is there anything you especially like?

W: Well, I really don’t know. I can never remember the names. M: Okay. Is there any food you don’t eat?

W: Well, I don’t eat chicken. And I don’t like eggs, either. But I like all kinds of fish and vegetables. M: Then let’s look at the menu and see what they’ve got for us.

Text 8

M: You look pale, Stephanie. What’s wrong?

W: I don’t feel good. I have a bad headache. In fact, I haven’t got much sleep this past week, and I feel really tired.

M: Why don’t you go to see a doctor?

W: Yeah, I think I should. But I have a report due tomorrow. Ms. Jenkins needs it for the board meeting next Monday.

M: Well, it’s Wednesday today. Why don’t you talk to Ms. Jenkins, and ask if you can hand it in on Friday morning?

W: Maybe I should try. I guess I just need a good sleep. Thanks, George. M: If you need any help with the report, just let me know.

Text 9

W: Yeah. Let me see what the cheapest two-bedroom apartment is. Oh, here’s one on Market Street. It’s a real bargain. Only three hundred and fifty dollars. But it doesn’t have any furniture. M: Well, it costs a lot to buy all the furniture.

W: Oh, here’s another one for just over four hundred dollars. This sounds very interesting! It’s on South Street. That’s a nice area.

M: Yes, it’s quiet. Did you say two bedrooms? W: Yes, at four hundred and fifteen dollars. M: Why don’t we go and have a look? W: Okay, I’ll give them a call.

Look at this picture. It’s the London Tea Trade Centre. As you can see, it is on the north bank of the river Thames. It is the center of an important industry in the everyday lives of the British people. Tea is the British national drink. Every man, woman, and child over ten years of age has on average over four cups a day. Or some one thousand, five hundred cups annually. About thirty percent of the world’s exports of tea makes its way to London. And Britain is by far the largest importer of tea in the world. Now, in the second picture, you can see how tea is tasted in the Tea Trade Center before it is sold. Here, different types of tea are tasted by skilled tea tasters, before they’re sold at each week’s tea sale. It’s amazing to see them at work. Over a hundred kinds of tea are laid out in a line on long tables. The tasters generally taste teas with milk, since that is how the majority of British people drink their tea. The tasters move down the line with surprising speed, tasting from a spoon and deciding what is a fair price for each tea. After that, they…

Section B

Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

In cities all over the world, people go to cafés to relax alone or with friends. But in many cafés in Korea, you can do more than that. You can relax, and play with dogs at new dog cafés. The Snoopy Café is one of them. The dogs there are in cages around the room. First, you choose a dog. Then it comes out of its cage. You can buy food for it. The BAU House is different from the Snoopy Café. You don’t have to choose a dog at the BAU House. All the dogs sit, play, or run around while people drink coffee and eat sandwiches. You can play with all the dogs at the BAU House. Laurie Chuong goes to the Snoopy Café about once a week. She likes to play with Princess, her favorite dog. She often buys food for Princess, too. Laurie likes to go to the Snoopy Café for many reasons. “I love dogs” she says, “but my apartment is too small for a dog. Also, dogs don’t like to be alone, and I work all day”. So when Laurie needs to have some fun with a pet, she goes to the dog café to see Princess. Dog cafés are very popular in Korea, but they are not cheap. A cup of coffee costs about three dollars and fifty cents, but the fun is free.

Questions:

11. How is the BAU House different from the Snoopy Café? 12. Why does Laurie like going to the Snoopy Café? 13. What is the passage mainly about?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

We are hearing a lot these days about downshifting. So what is it? The term downshifting first appeared in 1994. It was coined by the Trans-research Institute to describe a new philosophy by which high achievers at work chose a lower salary in exchange for a better quality of life. According to a recent study, four out of ten people under 35 years old are planning to downshift from stressful jobs to a slower pace of life. It’s not just the dream of the young. It is also popular with 35 to 54-year-olds, 12% of whom are making plans to downshift, 6% hoping to have done so in the next 2 years. The study found that 7% of workers had already downshifted. Doctor Lucy Grand, a psychologist looking at the phenomenon, believes that the downshifting is a dream that more and more people want to turn into a reality. People are not satisfied with their lives, and they want to make changes. However Doctor Grand adds, that some people will hesitate, because they

don’t actually believe they can make it happen, while others will rush into downshifting to discover that their dream ends up with the financial crisis. So it’s something that requires a lot of thought and planning to get right.

Questions:

14. According to the passage, what is downshifting?

15. According to a recent study, what is the percentage of workers who have already downshifted? 16. In Lucy Grand’s opinion, why does downshifting require a lot of thought and planning?

Section C

Directions: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet. Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

W: SRT Electricity. Can I help you?

M: Yes, I have a problem with my electricity.

W: Sorry to hear that. Your account number, please. M: It’s XW94702. W: Ok. Hmm……Our notes say that we arranged for an engineer to visit your house yesterday. Did he check the electricity?

M: No, he didn’t. Five minutes after he arrived, he had an emergency call and left.

W: I’m very sorry. I can arrange for another engineer to visit you on Wednesday.

M: Ok, but I have a meeting that morning. Do you have an exact time for his visit?

W: Is two o’clock OK for you?

M: Yes, that’s fine. Thank you.

W: No problem. Complete the form. Write ONE WORD for each answer.

Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa, climbing it is no small task, especially for a group of seven who are all disabled in some way. Here we have one of the climbers Mike to share his experience.

W: How do you feel about the climb, Mike?

M: It was a lot more difficult than we had expected, but we persevered and made it.

W: Why did you choose to conquer such a height?

M: We regarded this as a chance to prove the human spirit.

W: Really a tough journey. What did you do in time of difficulty?

M: We turned to each other for inspiration as we continued on the way to the peak.

W: So did you keep a record of the adventure?

M: Yes, we kept a diary of our travels on line.

W: How long did the adventure last?

M: Thirty days. And we reached the top on June 5th.

W: Getting to the top was definitely the high point. Thank you, Mike.

Complete the form. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

What happened to me that day is just unbelievable. The first thing to go wrong was that all the parking spaces were taken. So I had to park on the grass, and hoped that I would not get a parking ticket. When I got to the admission' s office, there was already a long line of students waiting. By the time it was my turn, two of the courses I needed were filled, and I had to go back to my adviser and make out a whole new timetable. Although I did sign up for all my courses, I missed the lunch. The next thing to go wrong was that the bookstore had sold out one of the textbooks required. As I was leaving, I wondered what else could possibly happen, there I saw a policeman standing beside my car and writing out a ticket.

you eat out twice a day. How can you get so far and eating out.

I had no other choice but eat out I found that I felt different due to what I was eating, so I tried to find places that served food that made me feel good. The secret was the quality of the food and how well the food was prepared. I made an effort to find out good restaurants as well as nice dishes. Woman: How did you manage to make a list of 218 favorite restaurants?

Man: I’ve lived in cities and when I moved back to Sweden from the United States, people asked me where to go and eat and went to the cities I know. I got a lot of ideas. Then I wrote about restaurants for a Swedish club magazine and some suggested I gather information about restaurants together since I had all the facts about the restaurants I’ve been to. I started to do that.

Woman: How do you find restaurants?

Man: The best way is to ask the people there. I may talk to the people at the street market or take a walk and look for place for myself. I never asked hotel clerks or taxi drivers. I don’t go either restaurants or places with menus too difficult to understand. 10.

Man: At the beginning of the tour, we all started the most important place at my town which is the Plaza Leon. The Plaza Leon is more than 100 years old. It’s a gathering place for young people on Friday and Saturday nights, and for parents and children on Sunday afternoon. Four streets lead to the Plaza which have white sidewalks and tree lined. Hemandes Street which was named after writers born in the city contains all of the food stalls fish markets and vegetable stands. Femando Street which was named after a famous educator is where all of the government offices, shops and houses. Via del Mar Street which is the only street which has old stone surfaces. Finally we came to the Hewish’s Street on which there are two universities, one of which is the most famous university in my country. That’s why it’s my favorite street of all.
