Why do we attend university?

Hello everyone.Now we have entered the gate of university.I believe everyone feels that our lives in the university will be very beautiful.But do you think that why we attend university? Maybe most of us think we go to college to be educated,to become a scholar,or to be usefulto the society when we complete our study.Of couse,this is true,but I think it is more than that.We go to universitynot only to study,but also to prepare ourselves for the real world.I think it is the most important.

University lives provide us many activities and they can teach us how to handle the relationship between different people.This is very helpful to our future.

In college,someone may go to extremes.One kind of students like study,but they never take part in anyactivities.Another kind of perple are fond of attending activities,but they study very little.I thinkthese two kind of students are not intellegent.I assume we must find a balance between the study and the activity.

Ladies and Gentlemen , Good afternoon! I‟m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. today my topic is “youth”. I hope you will like it , and found the importance in your youth so that more cherish it.

First I want to ask you some questions:

1、 Do you know what is youth?

2、 How do you master your youth?

Youth

Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind ; it is not rosy cheeks , red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life .

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . Nobody grows old merely by a number of years . We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul . Worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust .

Whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being „s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what‟s next and the joy of the game of living . In the center of your heart and my heart there‟s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .

When the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80.

你们好！欢迎大家在百忙之中抽出时间来到我们英才教育。在这里，我代表英才教育的全体老师感谢各位。今天我来向各位介绍下英语的重要性。有人曾说过“只会说家乡话，难以走出家门！只会说中国话，无法面对世界！”

①英语是当今世界上主要的国际通用语言之一，也是世界上最广泛使用的语言。据1986年的统计，世界上以英语为母语的人近4亿，差不多每十个人中就有一个人讲英语。英国、美国、加拿大、澳大利亚、新西兰等国家的人都讲英语。世界上约有20个国家把英语作为官方语言或第二语言使用，共计约有8亿人。也就是说，世界上差不多每五个人中有一个人至少在一定程度上懂英语。若加上世界各国中小学生学习英语的人数，懂英语的人就更多了。英语已经成为当今世界数十个国家的官方语言，这些国家独占了全世界70%以上的财富 „ „ 不懂英语就意味着跟这70%的机会无缘。另有一大批原本的非英语国家，如我们的近邻日本韩国，随着经济起飞，跟国际市场快速融合，英语早已普及化，大众化，大大改变了这些国家的语言使用面貌。调查显示，在这些国家，英语水平跟个人社会地位等级明显成正比。

②英语的使用范围非常广泛。世界上70%以上的邮件是用英文写或用英文写地址的。全世界科技出版物 70% 以上用英语发表。全世界的广播节目中，有60%是用英语进行的。绝大部分的国际会议是以英语为第一通用语言(90% 以上的国际会议用英语召开),它也是联合国的正式工作语言之一。总之，在国际政治、军事、经济、科技、文化、贸易、交通运输等领域，英语是一个重要的交际工具。随着我国对外开放的不断扩大化,科学技术的不断进步,国际地位的不断提高,迫切需要造就一大批精通外语的专门人才,以加速我国“四化”进程，使我国在国际事务中发挥更大更积极的作用。因此，学好英语对实现上述目标具有重要的现实意义和深远的历史意义。

英语是一种国际通用语，不懂英语，在信息交流方面会受到很大的限制。同时研究还表明，学外语会促进智力的发展。美国耶鲁大学的一位心理学家通过分析研究认为，讲两种语言的幼少儿比仅会讲一种语言的幼少儿，在脑子的灵活性和解决问题的能力方面均有优势。语言刺激是促进大脑细胞生长发展的要素。幼少儿期是语言发展的关键期，在这个时期对幼少儿给予两种语言的刺激，能促进幼儿大脑两半球之间的协调，加强神经细胞之间的联系。因此，幼少儿期的英语训练对孩子是大有益处的。那么，什么时候学英语最好呢？不少专家认为6岁以前是获得外语的最佳期。

儿童心理学的研究表明，在幼少儿知觉发展中，首先成熟的是形象思维能力。幼少儿认汉字也好，认英文也好，实际上都是一种信息刺激的活动，他们把字形当成某一具体形像，像记糖果、玩具、人的相貌一样记住它们。经过多次反复，这种特殊的“形象”就储存到大脑中去了。因此幼少儿学外语与成人学外语有很大差别。同时，幼少儿对声音的敏感度较高，且右脑控制发音器官的能力较强，声带、舌唇等运动神经的调节也具有很大的可塑性，这时练习说话，更容易掌握发音的技巧。随着年龄的增长，这种能力会逐步下降，给学外语带来困难。 要使幼儿的英语学习取得成效，关键是要有正确的教学方法。在幼少儿英语学习

Both have some of the world' s most impressive mountains, rivers and lakes. But each has things that are special to itself. The Chinese are surprised by the fact that Canadian fur traders of the early years were actually able to sail on canoes from the Atlantic to the Pacific through thousands upon thousands of lakes spread out from eastern to western Canada, while Canadians find the mountains drawn by Chinese painters on scrolls utterly surreal. No Chinese visitors would leave Canada contented without seeing the'Niagara Falls.

No Canadian visitors to 中国 would feel satisfied just seeing the Great Wall without also touring the Three Gorges, for that matter.

The exhibition of scenery of Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan brings us to yet another world. To those who have been to 中国, it will provoke reminiscences and to those who have not been to 中国, it may prove to be an irresistible invitation.

Not wanting to bore you with my pale description, Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like you now to join me in marvelling at these works of art.
