If you really want to go green, here‟s good news: eating green is good for you. The very foods with a high carbon cost---meat, pork, dairy products, processed snacks---also tend to be filled with fat and calories. A green diet would be mostly vegetables and fruits, whole grains, fish and lean meats like chicken---a diet that‟s eco- and waistline-friendly. Eating green can be healthier and beneficial to the climate. It may be hard to believe that a meal at McDonald‟s produces more carbon than your trip to a far away place. More than 37% of the world‟s land is used for agriculture, much of which was once forested. Deforestation (砍伐森林) is a major source of carbon. The fertilizer (化肥) and machinery needed on a modern farm also have a large carbon footprint, as does the network of ships and trucks that brings the food from the farm to your plate.

The most efficient way to reduce the carbon footprint of your menu is to eat less meat, especially beef. Raising cattle takes a lot more energy than growing the equivalent (相等的) amount of grains, fruits or vegetables. What‟s more, the majority of cattle in the U.S. are fed on grain and loads of it---670 million tons in 2002---and the fertilizer used to feed that creates separate environmental problems.

Focus on eating lower on the food chain, with more plants and fruits and less meat and dairy. It‟s simple. We can change today what goes into our bodies for the health of our planet and ourselves.

27. According to the passage, eating green will_____.

A. protect the animals from being killed

B. promote the development of agriculture

C. help us lose weight and keep self-confidence

D. be good for our health and make a change for the climate

28. What will not lead to carbon in the agriculture?

A. Deforestation B. Fertilizer C. Machinery D. Grains

29. In the author‟s opinion, the most efficient way to reduce carbon is to_____.

A. eat more vegetables than meat B. stop raising the cattle

C. plant more grains D. use less fertilizer

30. What is the passage mainly about?

A. The benefits of eating green. B. How to reduce the carbon.

C. The change of our menu. D. The ways of keeping healthy.

D

Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I‟m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don‟t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that‟s just the reality of how life is.

However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make needs to spend at least 10 000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it‟ll require even more time, time that most people won‟t put in.

This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don‟t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.

When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge

cost. It‟s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there‟s a huge chance that you‟re wrong anyway.

Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you‟re not willing to put in the time and work, don‟t expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won‟t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

31. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ___________.

A. the meaning of success B. the reasons for success

C. the standards of success D. the importance of success

32. In paragraph 2, the underlined word that refers to ___________.

A. being good at something B. succeeding in life

C. putting in more time D. setting a practical goal

33. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ___________.

A. it takes a lot of time to succeed B. one tends to enjoy his work

C. one gives up his work easily D. work makes one feel pain

34. What can we infer from Paragraph 4 ?

A Successful people like to show their great skills.

B People need to achieve success at the cost of life.

C It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.

D People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.

35. What is main theme of the passage?

A Having a goal is vital to success.

B Being good is different from being great.

C One cannot succeed without time and practice.

D Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.

There was a story many years ago of a school teacher--- Mrs. Thompson. She told the children on the first day that she loved them all the same. But that was a lie. There in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. He didn’t play well with the other children and he always needed a bath. She did not like him.

Then Mrs. Thompson got to know that Teddy was actually a very good boy before the death of his mother. Mrs. Thompson was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when, like all her other students, Teddy brought her a Christmas present too. It was his mother’s perfume(香水).

Teddy said, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smell just like my Mom used to.” After the children left she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she stopped teaching reading, writing and math. Instead, she began to teach children.

Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. The boy’s mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he improved. By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.

Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. He wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole lift. He went to college. Mrs. Thompson got two more letters from him with the last one signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, M. D.(医学博士).

The story doesn’t end there. On his wedding day, Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. You made me feel important and showed me that I could make a difference.”

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.”

Most people think of racing when they see greyhounds(灰狗)and believe they need lots of exercise. They can actually be quite lazy! Greyhounds are good at fast races but not long-distance running. They do need regular exercise but they like to run for a short burst and then get back on the bed or a comfortable seat. Another misunderstanding is that greyhounds must be aggressive(好斗的)because they are big in size. In fact greyhounds love people and are gentle with children.

Greyhounds can live for 12 – 14 years but usually only race for two or three years, and after that they make great pets. They don’t need a lot of space, don’t make a lot of noise, and don’t eat a lot for their size.

Normally, greyhounds can be as tall as 90 cm. There is, however, a small-sized greyhound, which stands only 33 cm. Greyhounds come in a variety of colors. Grey and yellowish-brown are the most common. Others include black, white, blue, red and brown or a mix of these.

Greyhounds have smooth body coats, low body fat and are very healthy. Because they’re slim(苗条的)they don’t have the leg problems like other dogs the same height . But they do feel the cold, especially since they would much rather be at home in bed than walking around outside.

25. A.to tell people how to raise greyhounds

B.to let people know more about greyhounds

C.to explain why greyhounds are aggressive

D.to describe greyhounds of different colors

The American book Who Moved My Cheese has been a bestseller all over the world. It teaches people how to face changes in their lives. Now its author Spence Johnson has written a book just for teens. The book tells us that when facing changes in our lives, like a new school or new friends, don't be afraid. Instead, use this change to make a better life. The book gives an example of a change at school. A school is changing from having two terms to three terms because there are too many students. Several teens are talking about this. Most of them are unhappy and worried. But Chris is not. He laughs and tells a story about two mice, two "little people" and some cheese.

The four are in a maze (迷宫) looking for the cheese. Here, cheese means something important in life, like moving to a new class or getting into college. But they find the cheese is gone. The mice realize that they can't change what has happened and have to find more cheese. This means finding different dreams. The little people, however, can't do this. They are afraid of changes so they find no cheese. After Chris finishes the story, the friends understand one thing: to get more cheese, move m a new direction quickly. His friends understand how this can be used in the changes all teens face, such as doing well at school or having good relationships or just feeling good about yourself.
