无论在平时的阅读,还是在SAT、TOEFL等等英语考试中,我们都会遇到一些英语长难句。毋庸置疑,提高对英语阅读中长难句子的分析能力,学会抓主干,抓关键词,对于提高英语的阅读能力和速度至关重要。英语大多数的长难句都不外乎后面的三种长难句类型之一,即:复杂的单句、复杂的并列句,复杂的主从复合句。为帮助大家系统掌握分析英语长难句的方法,华联教育网站针对性的上传3篇文章,分别予以简要的介绍。

分析英语长难句理解的原则方法

一、英语长难句为一个复杂的单句,可这样处理:跳读修饰成分,迅速找出主谓结构,既简化句式,抓住句子主干。这样一来,我们便可以将长句化为短句,将难句化为易句。具体步骤是:先跳读修饰成分或附加成分,找出句子的主干并理解其意义;然后再分段理解修饰成分或附加成分。

二、英语长难句为一个复杂的并列句,可这样处理:先找出其中的并列连词,然后再根据并列连词的意思理清句子前后是顺连关系还是反连关系,是因果关系还是转折关系等,最后再根据不同的语境关系正确理解句意。

三、英语长难句为一个复杂的主从复合句,可这样处理:先分清主句与从句,然后弄清从句的性质,即弄清它是什么从句,比如是状语从句,或是定语从句等。注意,弄清从句性质对于理解整句的意思至关重要。

另外,有一点要提醒同学们,在处理长难句时,如果既能正确理解句意,又能将其准确地译成中文,那是最好了。但是,对于有些长难句,要在较短时间内(如在参加考试时)将其译成中文比较困难,也没有必要,此时只要能正确理解其意思就行了,如果硬要勉为其难地译成中文,不仅会浪费时间,而且在许多情况也没有必要。

为便于大家理解,以下中文翻译并没有使用翻译技巧,而是按照英文的结构来翻译的。所以,会显得生硬,但它与英文原文结构是一样的,这样是为了更有助于同学们理解英文原句的句子结构。

一.结构复杂的简单句

如果句子只包含一个主谓结构,而句子各个成分都只由单词或短语表示,它就是简单句(不管句子是长是短)。

有的简单句并不简单,也很长,复杂的简单句包括:

(1)分词及分词短语做定语、状语

(2)动名词及动名词短语做主语、表语、宾语

(3)不定式及不定式短语做主语、宾语、表语、定语、状语

(4)形容词短语做后置定语

中文译文:解决一个冲突意味着把相反的各方变成一个单一的结果。

结构分析:不定式短语to resolve a dispute 做主语,谓语是means,不定式短语to turn opposing a positions into a single outcome 做宾语,其中分词opposing 是positions 的定语。

结构分析:动名词短语reconciling such interests 做主语。动名词短语做主语,谓语一般用单数。

二、结构复杂的英语长难单句

有些英语单句的单词有几十个以上,却甚至连一个标点符号都没有。我们称之为结构复杂的英语长难单句,其实理解这类句子并没有想象中那么难,经过大量训练,你会发现它们是有规律可循的。

结构分析:本句的主干是one become chemist or a neuroanatomist, 但只抓住句子的主干仍远不足理解整句的意思,还需要抓住起到联系句子内在联系的关键词,句子的关键词在句子的语法结构上虽然并非是句子的主干,但却可以起到对句子结构的暗示作用,对于准确提炼出英语长句中的主干、分清各种定语、状语等修饰结构,及分清主句从句等至关重要! MARK就以本句为例,介绍一下抓住句子关键词的重要意义。本句的关键词是as…as…,在本句中的意思是与…一样,像…一样,是比较、对比的意思,as…as…在做比较意思的时候,比较的内容在一句话中的语法成分上,通常是相同的。就本句而言,是一句话所表达的意思和另一句话所表达意思的比较。如果大家已经了解了as…as…的这一特点,就不会因为第一个as和第二个as后面所引导的单词和句式不一样而迷惑,甚至混淆比较的对象。 由此可见,如果大家在抓住句子的主干以后,又能抓住本句的这个关键词,这句话所要表达意思立刻就出来了,即:两个as中间所引导的内容,和第2个as后面所引导的内容一样容易。大家如果分析到这一层,那么剩下的只需要读懂比较的内容就可以了。

无论是英译汉还是汉译英,都提出“忠实”、“通顺”为其基本标准,这是大家所公认的。虽然英译汉和汉译英都以“忠实”、“通顺”为其标准,但并不等于它们之间没有差异,更不等于它们没有各自的特点。

比如,字面和实质往往有很大的差距,“七嘴八舌”就不能译成“七张嘴八条舌头”,“寒暄”也不能译成“寒冷的谈话”,“干脆”也不宜译成“又干又脆”,“在朋友面前我只感到惭愧”(巴金《朋友》),也不宜说成“羞愧”(ashamed),实指“不好意思”(illatease)。

下面,跨考教育孟老师详细为大家介绍如何进行长句的翻译,首先要进行断句,汉语的断句是个难点汉语是形散意连,断句不如英语那样严格。如何划分汉语的句界之间的关系,在很多情况下要取决于读者的语感和对语句的理解,

这样划分之后,可以初步决定,将第4、5、6部分翻译成三个定语从句,用来修饰第3部分的最后一个单词rights:

④which are necessary to the unrestrained development of his/her personality and dignity

⑤which are realized through national effort and international cooperation

⑥which are concordant with the organization, resources and situation of each country.

不过,在英语中,通常是一个定语从句修饰一个名词,很少有三个定语从句修饰一个名

词,因此我临时决定,将第4部分改写成一个短语,将第5、6部分合并成一个定语句子,请看:

②as a member of society

③is entitled to the social, economic and cultural rights

④necessary to the unrestrained development of his/her personality and dignity

⑤which are realized through national effort and international cooperation and concordant with the organization, resources and situation of each country.

最后,将这5个部分组合起来,就是这个中文句子的英文译文。
