One hundred and sixty years ago, when Charlotte Bronte created Jane Eyre, she could have never thought that it would become eternal. As a matter of fact, in the world of today, there are tens of

thousands of Jane Eyre, each living in a reader’s heart, breathing with him the same air and sharing with him the same happiness and sorrow. Her rich mental world has become an inexhaustible resource of spiritual power. From Jane Eyre, people who are timid and shy get confidence and self-respect; people who feel imprisoned get independence and freedom; people who are lonesome get love and care. However, what I get from Jane Eyre is the courage of inner questioning and self exploring.

Who is Jane Eyre? As the story extends, more and more things are added to the answer. From the beginning, we know that Jane is a young orphan raised by Mrs. Reed, her cruel, wealthy aunt. From her experience at the Lowood School, we found Jane a plain-featured but intelligent and honest girl. Her courage to fight with all the hardships, oppression and inequality makes a deep impression on us. When she meets Rochester and St. John, Jane shows us both her passion for love and her sticking to her principles of justice, human dignity and morality.

While we are getting to know more about Jane Eyre, she is also exploring herself. When she leaves Gateshead, the little girl doesn’t know what to expect in the future. She has endured so much unfair treatment that all she desires is freedom. However, when Jane gets freedom, she finds herself yearning for new experiences, which can change her life of loneliness and neglect. She follows her innermost feelings and accepts a governess position at a manor called Thornfield, where she falls head over heels in love with her employer, Rochester.

Then it comes to the most important decision that Jane has to make in her life. Rochester already has a wife, but Jane wonders how she could ever find another man who values her the way Rochester does. To leave, or to stay, Jane is caught in a dilemma. At this moment, Jane closes her eyes and looks into her soul. I can well remember the words she says to herself: “I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself.” Guided by her soul, she flees temptation and leaves Thorfield. The second test comes when St. John urges Jane to accompany him to India as his wife. In many ways, the proposal tempts her, but it also means sacrificing passion altogether and devoting herself wholly to principles. Where to go? Again, Jane softly touches her innermost feelings. Who am I? What am I longing for? Is it pure freedom, or passion of love, or principles? From Gateshead to the Lowood, from the Lowood to Thorfield, from Thorfield to Moor House then to Ferndean, Jane has finally got the answer. Having gone through all these years, Jane no longer goes to extremes. What she is seeking for throughout her life is a kind of perfect balance between moral duty and earthly pleasure, between obligation to her spirit and attention to her body. Jane knows herself well and thus can have the strength to hold her own bliss in hand.

Jane Eyre sets us a perfect model of inner questioning and self exploring. How about us?

Looking back on the development of Jane Eyre’s character, we can see clearly the important role inner questioning and self exploring has played. “What you are you do not see, what you see is your shadow.” Self-knowledge is a hard process that everyone must go through. There are times when we are overwhelmed by all kinds of desires and lose ourselves in the crowded world. There are times when we

just follow what others are doing and abandon our own dreams. To be specific, when asked why you are at school, how many students can honestly say that their answer well reflects their soul?

Actually, it is the question that my Grandpa asked me one day. We were working together in the garden, talking about my school life. I told him that as senior three students, we often have to burn midnight oil. “You are working hard!” he smiled, and then looking me in the eye, he asked, “But do you know what you are studying for?” I stammered. At that moment, I was completely at a loss. What am I studying for? Is it simply for getting a good score in exams or entering a good university and then finding a good job and leading a comfortable life? I feel confused. Grandpa patted on my shoulder, “You know something? Every brilliant life is different. What kind of life do you yearn for, my dear?”

I didn’t answer Grandpa. Only then did I realize how little I knew about myself. I have never before questioned myself what I really want. I thought about Jane Eyre. She is always exploring and questioning herself. That is why she is able to make her perfect life.

Jane Eyre gives me the strength. Now it’s time for me to look into my soul to see who I am and what I am longing for. I will no longer wander around, the moment my soul answers me with her deepest voice. I will fix my eyes on the road ahead, my own road, and keep going. I will hold my brilliant life in hand.

This is a story about a special and unreserved woman who has been exposed to a hostile environment but continuously and fearlessly struggling for her ideal life. The story can be interpreted as a symbol of the independent spirit.

It seems to me that many readers’ English reading experience starts with Jane Eyer. I am of no exception. As we refer to the movie “Jane Eyer”, it is not surprising to find some differences because of its being filmized and retold in a new way, but the spirit of the novel remains----to be an independent person, both physically and mentally.

Jane Eyer was a born resister, whose parents went off when she was very young, and her aunt, the only relative she had, treated her as badly as a ragtag. Since Jane’s education in Lowwood Orphanage began, she didn’t get what she had been expecting——simply being regarded as a common person, just the same as any other girl around. The suffers from being humiliated and devastated teach Jane to be persevering and prize dignity over anything else.As a reward of revolting the ruthless oppression, Jane got a chance to be a tutor in Thornfield Garden. There she made the acquaintance of lovely Adele and that garden’s owner, Rochester, a man with warm heart despite a cold face outside. Jane expected to change the life from then on, but fate had decided otherwise: After Jane and Rochester fell in love with each other and got down to get marry, she unfortunately came to know in fact Rochester had got a legal wife, who seemed to be the shadow following

Rochester and led to his moodiness all the time ----Rochester was also a despairing person in need of salvation. Jane did want to give him a hand, however, she made up her mind to leave, because she didn’t want to betray her own principles, because she was Jane Eyer. The film has finally got a symbolist end: Jane inherited a large number of legacies and finally returned. After finding Rochester’s misfortune brought by his original mad wife, Jane chose to stay with him forever.

I don’t know what others feel, but frankly speaking, I would rather regard the section that Jane began her teaching job in Thornfield as the film’s end----especially when I heard Jane’s words “Never in my life have I been awaken so happily.” For one thing, this ideal and brand-new beginning of life was what Jane had been imagining for long as a suffering person; for another, this should be what the audiences with my views hoped her to get. But the professional judgment of producing films reminded me to wait for a totally different result: There must be something wrong coming with the excellence----perhaps not only should another section be added to enrich the story, but also we may see from the next transition of Jane’s life that “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you would get.” (By Forrest Gump’s mother, in the film “Forrest Gump”)

What’s more, this film didn’t end when Jane left Thornfield. For Jane Eyer herself, there should always be somewhere to realize her great ideal of being independent considering her fortitude, but for Rochester, how he can get salvation?

The film gives the answer tentatively: Jane eventually got back to Rochester. In fact, when Jane

met Rochester for the first time, she scared his horse and made his heel strained, to a certain extent, which meant Rochester would get retrieval because of Jane. We can consider Rochester’s experiences as that of religion meaning. The fire by his frantic wife was the punishment for the cynicism early in his life. After it, Rochester got the mercy of the God and the love of the woman whom he loved. Here we can say: human nature and divinity get united perfectly in order to let such a story accord with the requirements of both two sides. The value of this film may be due to its efforts to explore a new way for the development of humanism under the faith of religion.

Life is ceaselessly changing, but our living principles remain. Firmly persisting for the rights of being independent gives us enough confidence and courage, which is like the beacon over the capriccioso sea of life. In the world of the film, we have found the stories of ourselves, which makes us so concerned about the fate of the dramatis personae.

In this era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, both physical and mental effects on us call for a balance. We are likely to find ourselves bogged down in the Sargasso Sea of information overload and living unconsciousness. It’s our spirit that makes the life meaningful.

Heart is the engine of body, brain is the resource of thought, and great films are the mirrors of life. In

dubitably, “Jane Eyer” is one of them.

Charlotte "Jane Eyre" Brontë

(1816-1854)

Charlotte Brontë was born 21 April 1816, third of the six children of Patrick Brontë and Maria Branwell Brontë. The major event of her young life was the death of her mother in 1821, whichcreated a lot of chaos. In 1824, Charlotte and her two older sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, were sent to the newly-opened Cowan Bridge Clergy Daughters' School.

Conditions there were bad even by the standards of the time, and it was not long before both Maria and Elizabeth became ill enough to be sent home, where they both died of consumption in the spring of1825. Patrick brought Charlotte and her younger sister Emily, who had recently joined them at the school, back home as soon as the other girls became ill, but Charlotte in particular never forgot what the school had been like.

The surviving kids all became each others' best friends. They created the kingdom of Gondal and wrote all kinds of epic stories and poems set in that realm. Charlotte and Branwell were in charge of Angria proper, while Emily and Anne (the youngest) ran the neighboring kingdom of Gondal.

Charlotte's next adventure was going to school in Brussels with Emily in 1842. Charlotte's time there was brief, less than two years, but it led to her eventual writing of Villette beginning in 1852.

Back home, Charlotte lapsed into chronic unemployment and severe hypochondria, actually thinking she was going blind, just like her father was. In 1846 the three sisters published a book of Poems, and though sales were very slow, the reviews were good and spurred on further literary endeavours. Charlotte's novel of this time, The Professor, was actually rather bad, suffering from a less-than-believeable main character. In August of 1846 Charlotte began work on Jane Eyre. Though it was published in 1847, Charlotte didn't tell her father about it until the next year, when the novel's success was plain.

When the novel begins, Jane is an isolated, powerless ten-year-old living with an aunt and cousins who dislike her. As the novel progresses, she grows in strength. She distinguishes herself at Lowood School because of her hard work and strong intellectual abilities. As a governess at Thornfield, she learns of the pleasures and pains of love through her relationship with Edward Rochester. After being deceived by him, she goes to Marsh End, where she regains her spiritual focus and discovers her own strength when she rejects St. John River’s marriage proposal. By novel’s end she has become a powerful, independent woman, blissfully married to the man she loves, Rochester.

You think because I'm poor, I'm plain, I have no feelings? I promise you, if god is gifted me with

wealth and beauty, I should make it does as hard for you to leave me just as for me to leave you now, but he didn not. If my spirit can address yours, as we both pass the grave stood before him equal.

In the story, her life can be devided into five parts.

一. At Gateshead(before ten years old)

二. At Lowood School (8 years` school life,6 years to study ,2

years to teach)

三. At Thornfield(about one year, the most important time in

her life)

四. At Moor House(half a year)

五. At Ferndean Manor(maybe the rest of her life)

It is known to us,even though living at Gateshead,in such a beautiful house with the Reeds, Jane Eyre`s childhood wasn`t filled with happiness. Jane Eyre`s uncle Reed had taken her to his house when her parents both died.On her uncle`s death bed he had made his wife, anut Reed, promise to look after Jane Eyre like her own children, but she didn`t keeping her promise.People thought Mrs Reed was a good woman, becasure they didn`t know how she hate Jane and are cruel to her.MrS Reed`s attitude made the others change their view to Jane. Her cousins did not love her

even bullied and punished her all the time. The servant Bessie is the only person who was kind to her.

Jane has spent most of her childhood in Gateshead,no other than this special experience shaped her personality of brave and strong to challenge her new life.

At Lowood, she was both excited and nervous about the new place she had see and the new people she had meet.Life at Lowood wasn`t good at the beginning.People there must believed in hard work, plain food, simple clothes and no luxury of any kind.So most of them were offish except Miss Temple, the headmistress of Lowood School.

Jane has made a friend here, the first really friend——Helen Burns. The girl was smart and kind-hearted but was hated by her teacher Miss Scatcherd and always be punished because of her “untidy and careless”.Jane was so angry about that,on the contrary,Helen told her:“Life is too short to continue hating anyone for a long time.We all have faults, but the time will come soon when we die, when our wickedness will pass away with our bodies, leaving only the pure flame of the spirit. That`s why I never think of revenge,I never consider life unfair.I live in calm, looking forward to the end. ”

That is true, her life was too short! When Jane felt she was

accepted, learned to like school and set to work to learn as much as she could, make as many friends as possible,Helen`s illness was much more serious than Jane first thought, she had got a tuber culosis. One morning Miss Temple found Jane asleep with Helen Burns dead in her arms.Helen have a great effect on Jane, she teached Jane how to learn to love, forgive and do as the Bible tells:“Sometimes you have to put up with some hard things in life even if other people hurt us.”

Jane stayed for eight years in Lowood, for the last two as a teacher. She was busy and happy all that time, however, suddenly she realized she had never known any other world apart from Lowood or Gateshead. She wanted freedom, decided to change her life or at least a new master to serve. So she advertised in a newspaper for a job as a governess and then came to Thornfield. The following story is as what happened in the film Sound of Music.

The governess of no presence moved Mr Rochester with her beautiful, simplehearted and frank soul. The dialogue between Jane and Rochester was interesting. Rochester was clever but a little peculiar,Jane thought she didn`t really understand him and never sure whether he`s serious or joking. So she always speaking carefully and keeping serious to build a wall that she

think are there to protect herself.Fortunately, finally she had the courage to take down the wall and express her love to Mr Rochester. She said:“Do you think I can watch another woman become your bride?Do you think I`m a machine, whitout feelings?Do you think, because I`m small and poor and plain, that I have no soul and no heart?Well, you`re wrong!I have as much soul and heart as you.It is my spirit that speaks to your spirit! We are equal in the sight of God!”

I believe when you heard what she said all of you will stand in awe of Jane. When I thought the story would come to an end,a sudden, surprising change were taking place.

On the wedding day,Jane found the secret of Rochester. The wedding cannot continue because Mr Rochester was already married and his wife was still alive! His explanation made Jane forgive him at once in her heart because she knew what he said was true. However,in her heart she also knew it was right for her to leave.

She left Mr Rochester when he was rich and health butcame back even though he was bland and disabled.I think that is true love.

After reading the novel, the image in the story may catch our attention. For instance, the fire image appeared in the story for dozens of times in different chapters. But no matter where it was put, it had symbolic meanings in some chapters, It was the symbol of warmth and happiness ,while in other place it was the symbol of humanity and friendship, sometimes it even represented de

strutive power. In the story, the fire image impressed us a lot while reading it,we could say fire is a symbol of human civilization and forcus of the social and family life. Thus, fire plays an important role in the frame of the novel. At the ,fire was the symbol of warmth and happy family life . Jane Eyre who was a strongwilled woman, tried her best to fight for her own happiness and love as well as freedom, for example “Now,let me leave you an instant to make a good fire?” , in this sentance we can see that rochester saw the magic power of “fire” in love ang this became a critical element to promote their .Thus, life was impartable from the fire, once the fire died out,the would be disappearing.

Fire existed everywhere in this great novel ,when Jane and Helen were invited to dinner by Mr.Temple, the fire also plyed an important role as Janeeager to win the friendship of the others and it could make her felt warm and comfortable.Trough reading the novel ,it was easy to know that the love between Jane and Rochester was not smooth because true love should stand the test of fire .Facing Rochester’s prpose,Jane on the top of the sky and it seemed that her spirit was lifted. But this feeling just last a short period of time as the news that Rochester had got a wife almost drove Jane mad.The fire of love was set up but put out .But the fire set up again years later as the love between them had never fade away.

People always the beautiful aspect of the fire ,but they never knew that fire was a terrible thing . It bring us happinessbut it also could give us disaster. In the novel,Rochester’mad wife set s fire and lost her life .Rochester also lost his property and eyesight in order to save her wife’life. That is to say .this fire destroyed life ,fortune and health.

In all, we an see that fire had two opposite aspects. On the one hand ,it made the world warm ,harmonious, wonderful. But on the other hand , it can destroy life ,fortune and health. In addition, Jane’s personality fire, she was kind hearted and sentimental and she also had character. Thus , it was this kind of “fire” that made her independent nd happy again. It was easy to see that throughout

the story. Jane Eyre behaved strong-minded enough to her love and brave enough to seek her own independence. These are all the reflections of fire in her deep heart. Though lived in a cruel society and suffered from abuse, she never gave up, because the fire was always on in her heart which prevented her from giving into the convention.

At last,to be frank, Jane’s ideal life is the reflection of the Charlotte Bronte’s thoughts. Maybe we can say that Charlotte uses this great novels to express her feelings on the contemporary society.

Jane Eyre told us the story that Jane Eyre was raised by her cruel, wealthy aunt, Mrs. Reed. Her uncle had passed away. At Lowood, Jane met a young girl named Helen Burns who shared a lot with her and became her best friend. A massive typhus

epidemic sweeps Lowood, and Helen died of it.. After a group of more sympathetic gentlemen takes Brocklehurst’s place,.Jane spends eight more years at Lowood, six as a student and two as a teacher. Then She accepts a governess position at a manor called Thornfieldwhich’s employer is a dark, impassioned man named Rochester, Jane found herself falling in love with him. On the wedding day , Jane found that Rochester already had a wife, Bertha . Rochester does not deny this, but he explains that Bertha had been already mad. Knowing that it is impossible for her to be with Rochester, Jane left Thornfield sadly.Without food and money, Jane was forced to sleep outdoors and beg for food. At last, three kind hearted people took her in. Their names are Mary, Diana, and St. John and Jane quickly became friends with them. They found Jane a job teaching at a school in Morton. One day a news said that her uncle, John Eyre, has died and left her a large roperty. Then she found that her uncle was also their uncle.Jane immediately decides to share her property with her three new cousins.St. John decided to travel to India, and he asked Jane as his wife. She refused to marry her cousin because she did not love him at all. Finally she found the man who she really loved so much was Rochester.Jane immediately went back to

Thornfield and found that it hadbeen burned to the ground by his mad wife who lost her life in the fire. Rochester saved the servants but lost his eyesight and one of his hands. At Ferndean, Rochester and Jane finally got married. At the end of the story, Rochester regained sight in one eye and was able to behold their first son at his birth. Then they lived a happy life forever.

After reading the novel, the image in the story may catch our attention. For instance, the fire image appeared in the story for dozens of times in different chapters. But no matter where it was put, it had symbolic meanings in some chapters, It was the symbol of warmth and happiness ,while in other place it was the symbol of humanity and friendship, sometimes it even represented destrutive power.

It was easy to see that throughout the story.

Feelings of Reading JANE EYRE Useful expression

1) [Useful expression] (p.47)

If all the world hated you, and believed you wicked, while your own conscience approved you, and absolved you from guilt, you would not be without friends.

2) [Useful expression] (p.231)

Prejudices, it is well known, as most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilized by education: they grow there, firm as weeds among stones.

3) [Useful expression] (p.40)

Life appears to me too short to be spent in nursing animosity or registering wrongs.

The type of materials in this book is written in English, and the topic area is literature. I spent reading the book for 2 months.

In the world history of literature, some many classical famous works are going to be immortal, but Jane Eyre deeply enters people's soul deeply, it by irresistible intrinsic deep has attracted the tens of thousands of readers deeply, has affected people's inner world, is in the world history of literature the eternal classics.

When Jane Eyre was a baby, her parents died. So she had to live with her uncle and his family. Unfortunately, her uncle also went away several years later. Then Jane was sent to the Logwood, which was a charity school and became a teacher there when she grown up. Later she left it to become a governess of Adela Varens, the ward of Mr. Edward Rochester, a Thornfield Manor. Later, Jane and Mr. Rochester fell in love with each other, and they decided to get married. But Mr. Rochester was revealed that he had a wife during the wedding ceremony. So Jane left Thornfield and Mr. Rochester. Otherwise Mr. Rochester’s wife was crazy. One day, she made a fire. Mr. Rochester tried his best to save his wife, but failed and his eyes were burnt and he became blind. The terrible news came to Jane, she came back to Mr. Rochester hurriedly. Jane told Mr. Rochester that she still loved him a lot, and tried her best to cheer him up. Finally, they got married, and had a lovely baby. This book enthralled me with the charm of language, and brought home to me the great wealth of English words and phrases. But this book is too difficult to me, and I had to look up a number of words. If there are explains of some difficult words, I think it will be much better. The figure of Jane Eyre had the greatest impact on me. After I close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, Jane Eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think: I remember her goodness, her pursuit of justice, her self-respect and the clear situation on equality, her striving for life, her toughness and her confidence… The writing of the book is effective, beautiful and even fascinating. The author is skillful in telling stories. I can easily find out the characters of these dramatis personages. Behind the wonderful story, the author expressed her

strong dissatisfactions to the society then. The author thinks that people should be good educated, and everyone is equal, no matter male or female. The new facts that I hadn’t learn before is goodness. I remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past. To me, I think that I can hardly forgive those people who have hurt me deeply. May be it is good enough that not to do some revenge. As a result of reading this book, her story makes me thinking about life and I learn much from her experience, at least, that is a fresh new recognition of the real. I can feel that how beauty really is, as we are all fleshly men, so we can’t distinguish whether a man is of nobleness or humbleness, but fleshly men, so we can’t distinguish whether a man is of nobleness or humbleness, but as there are great differences in our souls, and from that, we can know that whether a man is noble or ordinary, and even obscure, that is, whether he is beautiful or not. In essence, Bronte's novel became a direct assault on Victorian morality. Controversy based in its realistic exposure of thoughts once considered improper for a lady of the 19th century. Emotions any respectable girl would repress. Women at this time were not to feel passion, nor were they considered sexual beings. To conceive the thought of women expressing rage and blatantly retaliating against authority was defiance against the traditional role of women. Jane Eyre sent controversy through the literary community. For not only was it written by a woman but marked the first use of realistic characters. Jane's complexity lied in her being neither holy good or evil. She was poor and plain in a time when society considered "an ugly woman a blot on the face of creation." It challenged Victorian class structure in a strictly hierarchal society. A relationship between a lowly governess and a wealthy nobleman was simply unheard of. Bronte drew criticism for her attack on the aristocracy who she deemed as hypocritical "showy but ... not genuine." She assaulted individual's already established morals by presenting a plausible case for bigamy.

Jane Eyre is a story about coming of age. She becomes a governess and

leaves her childhood behind and finds herself in love with her master. This is a haunting love story with a twist, a must read and a must see.I think she was like most being that she was a woman who wanted her independence which she chose as a governess and to experience life. Jane grew and became close learning of friendship then of love and of heartache. A proud woman with self worth.
