MY POR:

It’s a lovely story. Somebody said it’s a fairy tale for adults, I agree this view. It’s a really simple love story, nothing about money and authority, without any lust just about love. It is difficult to find such a love in our real life. On the other hand, the personality about JERUSHA also attracted me. She is so honest and natural, she can tell anything to DEDDY, she never worried that DEDDY may get angry. After reading this story, I really admire JERUSHA. Though she had a hard childhood. After all, she found her DEDDY who loved her very much. It’s worth to read.

Daddy-long-legs summary

The novel written by Jean Webster was published in 1912. Jean Webster was born in America in 1876. In her works, Jean·Webster usually used orphan as theme. She finished 8 novels many unpublished stories movie scripts and works which are famous for their features of plain and witty. Daddy-Long-Legs as her magnum opus established her stable status in literrature. Daddy-long-legs is a good book which can not be met in 100 years, it got thousands of readers and applauses.

The theme is full of love and legend. The novel is made up with 84 pieces of letters. All the letters were written by Judy, a girl form orphanage. She couldn’t enjoy the happiness with her family just as an ordinary child. But one day, her fate was changed. After a councilman reading her essay-Blue Wedneday, he thought she can be a famous writer, so he decided to sent her to a university. But his only requirement was that she must write him a piece of letter to report her study every month. She called him daddy-long-legs. She just regarded the daddy long legs as her only listener. We can learn a lot from Judy. she left the orphanage went to school when the world around her was full of curiosity. However, slowly, she found that those who have families are different from her, because conditions are different, they know a lot, she did not even know who is the Michelangelo, she did not know Jane Eyre either. Her classmates thought she is very ugly, and ridiculed she ereryday. But she did not so depressed, she used an positive attitude to deal with problems, she discovered that the inadequacy of their own after reading every day, and actively make up that missed lessons.

When I closed the book slightly, I felt very happy. Fortunately, it had a happy ending. And I thought the most lucky people in this novel was not Judy but daddy long legs. Who can be happier than the people who read this lovely character. Seeing her humorous and sapiential letter which attached some simplified pictures, Then, I found Judy is a pretty, pure and capricious girl. She knew she has got a lot from daddy long leg , she should not ask any more, though she likes pretty skirt, beautiful stockings… She is a very strong-minded girl, she knew what she wanted, and step by step achieved her dream. And what the most important is that she told me that never forget how to be thanksgiving. “Live in the now, face the reality bravely” are what I have learned from this novel. After reading this novel, I benefited a lot, learned a lot.

Believe in love and miracles》

Believe in love and miracles

-My impression of Daddy-Long-Legs

This is a fast-tempo society, everybody has an established time schedule and lives in his own world. It is love and communication that combines our different worlds together. However, as we spend too much time chasing our goals and dreams, we have ignored the partners and friends around us more or less. So that one day, when we suddenly pause and think, we find ourselves getting lost in the human crowd.

After reading Daddy-Long-Legs, I am forced to stop and rethink, and save myself out of the confusing crowd. When I was young, I read a lot of romantic fairy tales, and have builded up a wonderful fictitious world in my mind. However, when I gradually grow up and enter the society, the real world appears to be completely different from what I have thought. Hence, I feel very upset about the fraudulent tales, and begin to refuse the deceptive social intercourse. This attitude has helped me to maintain a pure heart, but meanwhile drived the love and friendship away from me. As a result, I’ve always been alone. So although I study very hard and obtain good grades, I’m not happy at all, my life has been filled with depression and coldness for a long period. It is Daddy-Long-Legs that makes me believe in love and miracles again.

Just like the fairy tales, this story is very romantic and beautiful, too. However, as there are no princess or beast, this novel is more close to our real life. It is about an orphan who is so humorous and hardworking that she finally gains her true love.

Judy Abbott was the heroine of the whole book, she was brought up at an old-fashioned asylum. When she was young, she had to wholly depend on the charity and wear other people’s cast-off clothes, this makes her very self-contemptuous. Nevertheless, the miserable fact doesn’t sweep away her good sense of humor, on the contrary, it gives her a special ability to express her feelings in a funny way.

One day, Judy is informed by the asylum’s dour matron that one of the trustees has offered to send her to college. This mysterious man believes that Judy has potential to become an excellent writer, he decides to pay her tuition fees and gives

her a generous monthly allowance. He doesn’t ask for any thanks or repayment, but requires Judy to write him a monthly letter to practise her writing skills. However, Judy will never know his real identity; she must address the letters to Mr. John Smith, and he will never reply.

Judy catches a glimpse of the shadow of her benefactor, and knows he is a tall man. Because of this, she jokingly calls him “Daddy-Long-Legs”. Later, Judy attends a women’s college, and begins to write letters to her trustee. As she is good at describing anecdotes with childlike line drawings, her letters appear to be interesting and meaningful. Afterwards, Judy gets stuck in the affection entanglement with Jervie, this makes her extremely confused. She tries to consult her Daddy-Long-Legs and finally succeeds. However, when she meets the secret man, miracle happens. She finds that Jervie, the man she really loves, is Daddy-Long-Legs, who has always supported her as a relative. Then the story comes to an happy ending, they get married and live a happy life.

I love this story because it demonstrates an ideal world which is full of kindness and warmth, although there is a huge gap between the main roles. It shows that miracles do happen to those who are always hopeful. So no matter how bitter the life is, we should never lose our faith, we must believe that tomorrow will be better. Life is a long way filled with misfortune and adversity, we should learn to confront it bravely. Because when we shed tears for missing the sun, we shall also miss the stars.

When Judy is in the orphanage, she is all alone in the world and almost doesn’t have anything belong to her, but she still lives happily with optimism. Compared with Judy, today’s adolescents are much more fragile. Take a glance at the newspapers and TV programmes, you may not be surprised to find so many youngsters committing suicide, because it is just too common in today’s society. This reveals that today’s young people are too pessimistic and hopeless, thus they won’t treasure their life seriously. This problem is quite alarming among the poor students from the countryside, since they have to face more obstacles and barriers, they are more stressful than their peers. For example, last year a college girl who named Liu wei ended her life because of the unbearable financial pressure. As a result, it is quite

urgent for the society to show their loving care to the disadvantaged group.

However, the fact is still far from being. In China, the rich people seem to be more and more cruel and coldhearted toward the poor class. They prefer to take advantage of their dominant strength to exploit others’ industrial fruits rather than help the people who are not so lucky as them. So the economic gap between the rich and poor is still expanding. Furthermore, the wealthy people also discriminate and look down upon the impecunious group, which gives them a strong feeling of inferiority. I experienced this feeling when I just attended the university, at that time, many classmates tended to exclude and spurn me, my roommates even refused to use the same washing machine with me just because my dressing was antipathetic to them. I felt insulted. Hence, I am confused that why don’t the well-fixed people be like Daddy-Long-Legs?

In this book, Daddy-Long-Legs is not only a successful entrepreneur but also a kindhearted philanthropist. He always uses his fortune to help others without expecting any return, and respects the poor people just as his friends. So although he is among the hypocritical trustees, Judy likes him specially. This proves that conscience and kindness will lead to love and happiness, moreover, if everyone treats others sincerely and selflessly, the world will become a better place to live.

In addition, Daddy-Long-Legs also reminds me to treasure the love and friendship in my life. I realise that I’m not alone at all, at least I’m not an orphan, so I am much luckier than Judy to some extent, because she has nobody to rely on except her Daddy-Long-Legs, but I have my parents and friends who will always be there for me to turn to. As a result, I decided to write letters to my parents by imitating Judy’s writing style. When my parents received the letters, they were pleased, which indicated that my letters were grateful and effective. As my parents never went to college, they were quite interested in the campus life, and my letters presented them an active and wonderful university image, so they were delighted. Besides, since I have got a channel to express my feelings and understandings about different people and circumstances, I don’t feel lonely any longer, especially when I received their reply, I felt very happy and contented. It is true that Daddy-Long-Legs has made my

family life more joyous and harmonious.

What’s more, Daddy-Long-Legs also teaches me to show my gratitude to the people who really care and love me. For quite a long time, I live in my own world solely and gloomily, regardless of others’ feeling or doing, thus my world has become so small and cold. But when I try to view things in an appreciative way, subtle changes occur in my life. I find more friendly greetings and smiles on the way, and I usually feel accommodative in the class. I think I’m blending into the group and my life circle is being enlarged, this feeling is quite joyful for me.

In conclusion, Daddy-Long-Legs is a book full of love, warmth and miracles, it shows us how to live happily and meaningfully with hope and kindness. In the blue days, we should keep optimistic and work hard to earn a better life; while in the bright days, we should pay more attention to the poor people who are not so fortunate as us, then the world will become more beautiful and cozy. Moreover, It also reminds us to value the love and friendship around us. We are all living in the same world, but if we don’t keep contact with each other, all of us will live in different worlds. As Judy has set a good example for us to write letters in a humourous way, we should also contact our parents and friends, share our happiness and tears with them, and show our gratitude to them. In that way, our little worlds will be combined together, then we will never feel lonely or helpless.

All in all, we should believe in love and miracles. With love and miracles, our life will be filled with sunshine and surprises.

《Daddy-Long-Legs

Not Just a Fairy Tale

--Sentiment after reading Daddy-Long-Legs

Daddy-Long-Legs, a best-known novel by the American writer Jean Webster, was written in the form of epistles, altogether 82 letters from our protagonist – Jerusha “Judy” Abbott. All these letters were written to her benefactor – the so-called “Daddy-Long-Legs” whose true name was Jervie Plendleton. A monthly letter to report her study was the only requirement of the wealthy asylum trustee “Daddy-Long-Legs” to finance orphan Judy’s college life, after he noticed Judy’s writing talent from her essay -- Blue Wednesday.

Dedicated "To You", the first person narrative novel leads readers, myself included, to the illusion that we are actually the receiver of Judy’s letters and the one she regarded as family. When reading the novel, we feel like the witnesses of Judy’s growing in the college. We can’t help worrying when the letters told us her ill or she’s in derision, delighting when she obtained a college scholarship, upsetting when she had to deny the genuine love of Jervie. Take it one step further; the reading process is like peeking at a girl’s diary, inducing a subtle excitement inside readers. Meanwhile, we are able to puzzle out, more or less, whom Daddy-Long-Legs is, but apparently Judy knows nothing about it. It’s a quite amusing and interesting experience to watch her gradually falling into the

well-arranged “love trap” set by Jervie. Ultimately, Judy wrote her last letter in the novel but the first love-letter to her beloved Daddy-Long-Legs – Jervie, which is the end of the novel but a beginning of Judy and Jervie’s new life, a promising one.

Admittedly, it is the romantic and pure love story that brings the novel a reputation of fairy tale for adults, but the theme is not made up of love only. What the growing of Judy reflects is the core of the book.

Brought up at the John Grier Home, an old-fashioned orphanage, Judy encountered quite a few tribulations during college years. Lack of good education resulted in her exposure of ignorance in the class. Judy was ridiculed by classmates because she had no idea about who Michelangelo is and she even never heard of Jane Eyre. Once Judy realized her inadequacy of literature knowledge, which seemed more like a common sense to college students, she made up her mind to enlarge her readings rather than gloomily cry in the dorm. In the following letters, we can see Judy growing more independently. She was fed up with “Jerusha” -- a name randomly picked up in a directory. Therefore, she named herself “Judy”, a brand new and Judy-fashioned name. Such behavior could be considered as her first step of independent consciousness. After that, her trying using scholarship to pay her college fee also proved that

Judy was determined to change the sponsor-recipient relationship. The moment when Judy repaid Daddy-Long-Legs 1000 dollars through selling her own novels announced her completely financial independence. That is the way how Judy treated Daddy-Long-Legs – to be grateful. As for spiritual independence, except for Daddy-Long-Legs, Judy did make two more pen friends, which meant she was not the little girl merely relying on dear Daddy-Long-Legs anymore. Judy got her own network of contacts, Sallie McBride in real life and pen friends in mental world. Also, her view towards John Grier Home transmitted from detest to a more positive attitude. Judy began to realize how lucky she was and to appreciate life itself. The gratitude towards life made her lending a hand to a poor family. Judy, our protagonist, finally became a mature, virtuous and independent lady despite the fact that she was an orphan bought up in tough conditions.

Frankly speaking, there is no young girl in this world but not feel envious of Judy, for she is such a lucky lady who successfully won the love of a charming gentleman. She is another Cinderella indeed! However, I would not feel jealous at all because I know the reason why Jervie fell in love with her is not a coincidence. We have been touched by Judy’s attractive personal character, so has Daddy-Long-Legs. If she were not such an optimistic, independent,

humorous and even self-mocking girl, I doubt whether Daddy-Long-Legs would love her.

While reading, the most pleasant thing for me is to observe the world through Judy’s view. I have to say it is reasonable that Judy is said to have talents in writing. Her lively words lighten up my dark mood after studying a long day; her clumsy paintings always make me laugh; her unique perspectives inspire me in many ways; her courage teaches me a lesson how to return in songs when the world has kissed her soul with its pain.

It is a book worth reading and even re-reading, especially suitable for bedtime reading. Try not to only focus on the love story in the novel. The essence to have true love is to better ourselves before we meet our Mr. Right or Miss Right. Therefore, when encountering that him or her, you are able to show your best self. Personal growing, especially the female growing, is what Daddy-Long-Legs wants to share with us.

The Reading Response for Daddy Long Legs

Several days ago, I finished my reading of the book Daddy Long Legs. It was written by the American writer Jane Webs. The whole story is conprise of letters, which caught my attention in the first place. After reading the story twice, I want to share some feelings with you here and likeswise, I would show you some details of the novel in the following paragraphs.

The leading girl of Daddy Long Legs was named Jerusha Abbott which she later changed into Judy herself. Judy was an orphan in John Grier Home. She had to do mountains of works there and couldn’t go outside like the other girl. However, a Trustee of John Grier Home promised to send Judy to university for she had once written an outstanding article. Moreover, the Trustee would also offer a fix amount of money to her once a month. Judy had a wonderful time in college and fell in love with the uncle of her roommate. Nevertheless, she refused to marry the man because of her though that he deserves a better girl. Finally, with a broken heart, she told the affair to her Daddy- Long-Legs yet suddenly been informed the facts that the man she loves with all her heart was her dear Mr.Daddy.

Why the girl calls the her benefactor Daddy- Long-Legs? I believe you might wonder it. The answer lies in the figure of the man. Before she

was given the chance of going to school, she happen to meet the benefactor in the asylum but just from behind. As she recalled it later, she only remember his long legs. Now that the man refused to give her his true name, she addressed him in her own way as Daddy- Long-Legs in her letters.

From the story above, we could see that Judy is a nature and optimistic girl. She could crack a joke even with a stranger who she regarded as an elder. Although she grown up in an asylum, she tries hard to searcher the bright side of life and enjoy the sunsight every day. She relished telling everything to her Daddy- Long-Legs. She was such a plain girl that she never worried that her Daddy may get angry.

Some people say it’s a love story like a fairy tale for adults. Even though Judy and her benefactor love each other, she turned down her proposal for she belived she did not deserve his love. However, I don’t share the same idea with the girl. In my point of view, she should never deny the opportunity of pursuing true love. Love, which exists around us without reason, gives every human being the equal right to process it. In addition, whether a girl is qualified or not is depends on the mind of the beholder. We all have the choice and chance to pursue ourselves’ true love no matter who we are , after all, love is what really counts.
