《肖申克的救赎读后感英文版》

Everyone is the god of his own. If you have succumbed to yourself, then who can be your savior all through the world? This scentence is form The Shawshank Redemption.

The story began with the trial of a young banker called Andy, who was slandered by circumstantial evidence and be put into the Shawshank prison. Ellis—a prisoner who became his friend later, and many other prisoners had been in the prison for so many years that they were used to this kind of life. They even did not want to go out. They stayed just in the small prison living a boring life, it’s a despairing world where nobody knows what their dream was, where their hope was.

Though some of them tried many times, they weren’t able to succeed, so they gave up. Even so,Andy insisted. He owned the smart brain, the remorseless spirit, as well as the most important thing----hope. With these, Andy escaped the prison finally.

The scene impressed me most is when Andy got out of jail, he extended his arms in front of him in the heavy rain as if he were welcoming the smell of freedom. At that moment, I saw the confidence win the darkness, brightness . I could feel my heart being shivering as his voice said: “Remember, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies!”

It’s obvious that what he said is right. Whatever difficulty it is, we can’t lose hope. Hope is everlasting. We must do everything with hope. That it is , hope is worthy to be kept on the way to realize our dreams.

《肖申克的救赎 英文观后感》

二、《肖申克的救赎》的影评 The story may sound simple, but the truth behind the words is remarkable. When I heard the name of the film first time, I considered the Shawshank to be a man’ name, but in face it is a jail——a hell in the world. Not only for the inhumanity of the jailors——they behaved brutally; but also for the jail gnawed at people’ heart by keeping them waiting and waiting as life passed. It seemed that only those utterly worthless people who gave up everything could survive. That’s where the story happened. The part impressed me most is when Andy got out of the jai. He extended his arms in front of him in the heavy rain as if he were welcoming the fresh air and the freedom. At that moment, I saw the faith win the darkness, discharging light dazzling the eyes in the dark blue sky. Under the light, I could feel my recreant innermost being shivering as his voice said: “Remember, Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies!” That’s why I like this film: it encourages people to fight to preserve the dignity of human beings, to appreciate the beauty of life, and the most important is to keep hope forever. He once that is born, that is die. Everyone is the same. The only difference is whether busy living or busy dying. The film tells me even a man can live once, but if he keeps faith, keeps hope and works his life right, then once is enough. The faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark, the hope is the chief happiness that this world affords, and the life should be full of the singing of the bird and the happiness hope brings. " What’s that do you think? It’s the trembling of the heart, the singing of the mind, the flying of the soul and the hope to be free.”

My View Point on Shawshank Redemption

Abstract: This film Shawshank Redemption describes a man called Andy Dufresne was sent to the prison for he murdered his wife but in fact he was innocent. Then he started fighting against with the wicked prison life. Though he suffered many unfair treatments and ordeals, he never gives up himself. Due to his intelligence and perseverance, he spend 20 years successfully escape from the prison as a redemption. He teaches me that never lose hope.

Keywords: hope; redemption; freedom; dream

The story took place in 1940. A man who is a banker called Andy Dufresne, was sent into the Shawshank prison, for he murderer his wife and her lover in bed. However, he was innocent as he said. The new days in the prison were hard to live. It’s violent, heartless and cruel. Nevertheless, A month later, Andy began to make friends with other prisoners. And one of them called Red, who could get anything what he wanted. Andy bought a mallet from him and started his plan to escape. During this time, he did many things: expanding the library, caving stones, helping the corrupt warden to get money or bribe, etc. Then a young prisoner’s coming break his quiet life in jail. But the warden killed the young prisoner the only man that knew Andy was innocent. Then he knew the prison he could not stay any more. It took him 20 years to tunnel secretly and he successfully escaped from the prison. When he got free, Andy sent the evident which could prove the warden corruption, briber and murdering to the policy agency. Before that, Andy had told his best friend Red that his dream---Zihuatanejo, a warm place without memory. After escaping, Andy lived a free life in another identity and made the prison governor arrested. Several years later, Red was approved to leave. for the promise to Andy. Finally, in Zihuyatanejo, they met.

The cruel prison life terrified me and the friendship moved me. The story goes to a happy ending---redemption. This film impressed me a lot. A sentence was said in the film: ’Some birds aren't meant to be caged, but most birds will choose to stand it.’ .In this film, as we can see, the Shawshank Prison, which enjails lots of people. They have been in the prison form many years ,so they won’t go abroad. Because they won’t and also they can’t. They lived here for years without hope, and they lived just in the small prison, where nobody knows what is their dream and what’s their hope. As I remember, a old man Brooks was released after he had been in the jail for 50 years. But he found that the world became completely different from the world he imagined. For example, he seldom see cars before. He felt very strange and helpless to the outside world He can hardly adapt to the new developed world. He would rather stay in the prison. So unfortunately he chose to commit suicide.

However, on the contrary, Andy said a converse sentence:’ Some birds aren't meant to be caged, that's all. Their feathers are just too bright...’ He long for the freedom and strive for it! What I remember very clearly is someone said that “These walls are kind of funny things like that. First, you hate them, then you get used to them. Enough time passed, get so you depend on them. That is institutionalizing.” But

Andy hadn’t been affected. He insisted on his faith of freedom. He dared to pursue his deserved freedom! That’s the first point I appreciate.

What’s more, another thing I think is friendship. Of course, Andy’s perseverance and endeavor is the main reason that he succeed in escaping. But it can’t be denying that friendship is also a important reason. Without the friends’ help in the prison, especially red’s, He can’t break the prison, too. Even in the jail which is the most evil place that Andy could make it a significance place. He had transformed a storage room smelling of turpentine into the best prison library in New England. Then the prisoners read the books and got knowledge from it. Andy also helped them to pass the high school equivalency. The glitters of him lighted others’ life. That helps him built many sincere friendships in the prison. He just too bright that didn’t belong to the prison .Then he escape and gained the freedom.

Furthermore, the patience, courage and strong willpower are the keys to escape. 20 years, not a short ordeal time, but he endured. He made his plan day by day, week by week and year by year. He never gives up. he took nearly twenty years to dip a tunnel with a little rock hammer which Red said it would take a man 600 years to tunnel under the wall with one of these to fight for his free .And he did it finally. Please imagine, crossing the tunnel he dup, he still should crawled through five hundred yards of shit-smelling foulness. That is the length of five football fields.

Then is the last but not least, I think. He has the bright brain ,the never fading persistent, and the most important thing----hope. Just as Andy said to Red: Hope is a good thing, may be the best of things. In this film, Andy show us that how good thing the hope is. Yes , hope is a good thing. Whatever it is, it can’t lock the hope. We all have dream. We all have hope. We all have it and please never give up, like Andy. This film, Shawshank Redemption, teaches me a lot. It deserves to be one of the most overwhelming films in the Hollywood.

You see, they lived just in the small prison living a boring life, it’s a gray world where nobody knows what their dream was, what their hope was.

However, as the old man said: Some birds aren't meant to be caged, but most birds will choose to stand it. Though they tried too many times, they never finished it, so they gave up. Nonetheless, Andy tried. He has the smart brain, the never fading persistent, as well as the most important thing----hope. With a small hammer to dig through the tunnel to drainage pipe, and then climb over the drainage pipe outside to the river, Andy succeed in escaping the constraint

The scene impressed me most is when Andy got out of jail, he extended his arms in front of him in the heavy rain as if he were welcoming the fresh air and the freedom. It’s obvious that hope is a good thing. Whatever difficulty it is, we can’t lose the hope. Hope is enduring. Why we study? Because of the hope. We don’t hope us to be the man who nobody knows, so we go ahead for the dream. That it is , hope is worthy to be kept on the way to realize our dreams.

《肖申克的救赎读后感 英文》

Impression of the Shawshank Redemption

After watching the Shawshank Redemption, my mind was filled with thoughs of hope and belief. In the prison, maybe there should be no hope as Red said „„Hope is dangerous, it can make a man insane.”But the coming of Andy made a difference to everyone in Shawshank.

Andy was a young banker, whose wife had a lover outside .He hated them ,but he wasn‟t a cold fish as people thought who killed his wife .He was innosent ,however,he was sentenced to Shawshank prison for all life.As we can guess, the door for free life shutting up immediately is horrible ,let alone an innocence. With a hammer,he ditched the wall behind a poster for nearly 20 years,It‟s the hope and belief in his heart that leading to the successful prison break. What‟s more, he attained a library which became the best prison library. In the end,He chose a lighting and thundening nignt to escape from the tunnel which took him 20 years, and crawled 500 yards in pipes, getting freedom eventually. He stretched arms in the rain,to bug the true freedom, the exchange with hard work and great hope. The scene touched me.20 years ,20 years is short to a free man, saddness to a prisoner ,but to Andy,an innocence ,there is no complain. If we are in shawshank, are we Andy,Red or Brooks? Can we continue ditching a hole for 11300 nights? Are we peace enough after prison breaking to a seaside to live our spare time ?

I love the smile on his face when he drove to his dream place,it‟s so pure, without fear, worry and saddness . It‟s a relief, a relief after chasing for hope, planning the future ,forgetting the past.It is just what Red found, the life can‟t have no hope and belief whenever,he can‟t go the way Brooks went,it‟s wrong.

In the film,it is a surprise to me that Brooks wanted to kill a prisoner in order to stay in Shawshank ,but after thinking over it,I know,to a hopeless prisoner ,a sudden freedom is horrible, because he had no aim to live ,he had already adapted to the limited life, he had been institutionalized. When Brooks carved his name ,maybe he wanted to find a true freedom. But,in this world, death is just easy, the significance of this is important. However the situation is,innocent but in prison forever or casted in darkness for a month, nothing can keep us away from hope.

If I was in shawshank ,I must have accustomed to the life there. Really ,it is the horrible natural pattern.I don‟t know why tears are in my eyes, maybe I‟m moved by Andy‟s strong and greatness, the strong hope to a man,the influence of Andy to others or the peace and pursuit in one‟s heart. Now ,I really know why it is the Shawshank Redemption not Andy‟s Redemption,Andy‟s prison break is Shawshank‟s miracle, but in fact it is a must to a strong hoper. No matter what happens,we should take Andy as a model, maintain a hope, pursuit the aim, save others around us, resist wicked power, wait for proper chances to get out of our situation eventually.

My heart was heavy after finishing the film. Forgetting the past, enjoying the spare time, maybe bad luck had tormentted Andy 3 quarters of life, complain was no use, innocent person was peaceful in heart, lying in breeze, smiling to sea ,and bad governors were punished by law as they should be ,that is the best ending. Now, I am maturer to see the obstacle and use hope as a tool to save myself and others. “Hope is a good thing.Maybe the best of things and no good things ever dies!‟‟

《肖申克的救赎读后感英文版》

The Shawshank Redemption portrays a banker, spending nearly two decades in Shawshank State Prison, and his friendship with Red, a fellow inmate.

In 1947, a banker namedAndy is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, based on strong circumstantial evidence. He is sentenced to Shawshank State Prison, run by Warden Samuel Norton. He is quickly befriended by Red, who has recently failed to gain parole. Andy finds Red can acquire contraband for the inmates, so he asks Red for a rock hammer in order to maintain his rock collection hobby. He later asks Red for a full-size poster for his wall.

During the manual labor, Andy overhears Captain of the Guards Byron Hadley complain about having to pay taxes onaforthcoming inheritance. Andy risks punishment by explaining to Hadley how to circumvent the taxes legally. Hadley accepts Andy's advice and rewards his friends withabrief respite and beer. Andy's accountancy expertise is soon sought by other guards at Shawshank State Prison and nearby prisons, and Andy is given a space to work on their financial matters under the pretense of maintaining the prison library alongside

elderly inmate Brooks. Hadley delivers a brutal beating to inmate Bogs, leader of "The Sisters", after his gangs' attempt to sexually molest Andy puts Andy in the infirmary; Bogs is paralyzed while the remaining Sisters leave Andy alone. Andy is able to use his good will with the guards to help expand the library; when one donation to the library provides him with the opera The Marriage of Figaro, he plays it for all the inmates to hear.Brooks is soon freed on parole, but is unable to adjust to the outside, non-regimented world, and commits suicide.

Norton has Andy launder the money under a false identity, in exchange for allowing Andy to keep his private cell and to continue maintaining the library. In 1965, Tommy Williams is incarcerated into Shawshank State Prison on robbery charges. Tommy is brought into Andy and Red's circle of friends, and Andy assists Tommy into getting his GED. Tommy reveals that one of his old prison-mates had claimed to have committed the murders for which Andy was charged. Norton, fearing that Andy may expose his illegal activities if he were released, puts him into solitary confinement and has

Tommy killed by Hadley, claiming he was an escapee. When Andy is finally released from solitary, Norton threatens to burn down the library if Andy does not continue to launder the money for him.

Shortly after, Andy informs Red of his dream to live in a Mexican-Pacific coastal town, and instructs Red, should he ever be freed, to visit a specific hayfield near Buxton. The next day at roll call, Andy's cell is found empty. Norton, in anger, throws one of Andy's rocks at the poster of Welch; the rock tears through the poster, revealing a tunnel that Andy had dug with the rock hammer over the last two decades .Andy uses his false identity to withdraw all of Norton's money from the bank, at the same time, sending the evidence to a local newspaper. Hadley is arrested while Norton commits suicide.

Red finally achieves parole after serving 40 years of his sentence and he decides to follow Andy's advice and visits Buxton. Red violates his parole and travels to Mexico; he eventually comes across Andy on the coast, and they happily reunite.

Different Seasons Book Review

1. Quotations

(1) “You know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific?”

I told him I didn’t.

“They say it has no memory. And that’s where I want to finish out my life, Red. In a warm place that has no memory.”

(2) “Get busy living or get busy dying.”

(3) “The most important things are the hardest to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them -- words shrink things that seemed limitless when they were in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more than that, isn't it? The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while you were saying it. That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a tellar but for want of an understanding ear.”

(4) It is the tale, not he who tells it.

(5) There’s no comfort without pain; thus we define salvation through suffering.

2. Summary of the story

Different Seasons is a collection of four novellas, broken down into seasons of the year, that remain some of King’s most spectacular and noteworthy works to date, having had three of the novellas turned into films. The first novella, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, is, oddly enough for a King work, a tale of hope. The novella was later turned into the critically acclaimed film, The Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

As Andy Dufrense has recently been convicted for the double murder of his wife and her lover, Andy is sent to Maine’s Shawshank State Prison to serve a life sentence for each of his victims. A banker in his past life as a free man, Andy begins to do the taxes and financial work for many of the prison’s personnel and, as such, brings hope to the life of Red, a man serving three life sentences who was previously without hope before Andy’s arrival.

The second novella, Apt Pupil, also enjoyed a film interpretation directed by Bryan Singer and starring Ian McKellan. The story of a boy who becomes obsessed with the Jewish Holocaust and discovers a former Nazi soldier living within the town he resides is a dark tale focusing on obsessions of a more dark nature and the harm they can bring to the obsessed.

The third novella in Different Seasons, The Body, was the inspiration for the film Stand By Me starring the late River Phoenix. The Body takes a concept King is familiar with and has been explored in novels such as It and Dreamcatcher, the

companionship between childhood friends, and brings a sort of bittersweet drama to the tale. This tale of four boys who set out to find the recently discovered body of a boy not far from their own age is a tale of innocence lost and bonds made stronger. It’s a beautiful tale that tears at the heart and makes the reader question his or her own life and friendship bonds.

The fourth and final entry in the collection is brief, but powerful. Breathing Lessons tells the story of a group of men who meet and share stories within a brownstone in New York. In Breathing Lessons, a doctor tells a most unusual story of a pregnant patient about to give birth under tremendous circumstances.

Here is what King’s idea about each story:

1. Hope Springs Eternal: Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption--the most satisfying tale of unjust imprisonment and offbeat escape since The Count of Monte Cristo. An unjustly imprisoned convict seeks a strange and startling revenge

2. Summer of Corruption: Apt Pupil --a golden California schoolboy and an old man whose hideous past he uncovers enter into a fateful and chilling mutual parasitism. Todd Bowden is one of the top students in his high school class and a typical American sixteen-year-old---Until he becomes obsessed with the dark and deadly past of an older man in town.

3. Fall from Innocence: The Body

Four rambunctious young boys plunge through the facade of a small town and face-to-face with life, death, and intimations of their own mortality.

4.A winter’s tale: The breathing method--a tale told in a strange club about a woman determined to give birth no matter what. A disgraced woman is determined to triumph over death.

3. A brief introduction to the author

His books have sold more than 350 million copies and many of them have been adapted into feature films, television movies and comic books. entire oeuvre, such as the World Fantasy Award

for Life Achievement (2004), the Canadian

Booksellers Association Lifetime Achievement Award (2007) and the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America (2007).

4. My reflections on this novel

It is a book consists of four stories and written by Stephen King, the King of Macabre. This story has nothing remotely resembling macabre but King still Rules. I started reading it at high school, though the book I read that time was in Chinese. and I’ve read it for another 2 times in college. It made quite an enjoyable read. The book is very well written. One can feel the determination, patience, strong will power and conviction throughout the reading of this book.

The first strory, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. Is really a good one. The story is narrated by Red, who is serving life imprisonment in the Shawshank prison for committing two, (or is it three?) murders. He does not have any guilt for committing the murder he actually wanted to, but feels sad for the other two who accidentally and unexpectedly get killed in the process. Enter Andy, convicted to life imprisonment for killing his, Andy’s and not Red’s, wife and her lover in cold blood. Andy is quite the reclusive and aloof sort of guy who keeps himself to himself in the prison. Over the years, the only person gets friendly with is Red.

Andy is convinced that he is not guilty and he has been wrongly condemned to the prison walls. Instead of accepting or resigning to fate, he patiently, slowly but surely plans his escape and while he is in prison, he finds ways of being alive, alive in the true sense of the word. It reminds me of the line ’’Living is more than merely existing’’.

There is this part towards the end of the book where Red comes out of the prison and then feels that he belongs more to the Shank than the outer world and the idea of committing a petty crime and getting back to prison crosses his mind. By then Andy has already made his jaw dropping escape and he, Red, says to himself that if he tries to get back to prison then it is equal to slapping on the face of everything that he held in awe and admiration of Andy’s spirit of freedom and Hope.

Red says towards the end that it is his story. Then he goes on to say that the reader might think that Red actually plays a small part in the story and the story actually belongs to Andy. He then says that it is a part of him that wanted to be free for 37 years, (Red would have been in the Shawshank prison for that many years) the part of him that had Hope, Hope that was in larger quantity in Andy that made him do what he, Red, wished to do. Be Free.

I bet most of the people have watched the film, but the story itself is better. And this is my reviw of the first story.
