A

On a sunny day last August, Tim heard some shouting. Looking out to the sea carefully, he saw a couple of kids in a rowboat were being pulled out to sea.

Two 12yearold boys, Christian and Jack, rowed out a boat to search for a football. Once they'd rowed beyond the calm waters, a beach umbrella tied to the boat caught the wind and pulled the boat into the open water. The pair panicked and tried to row back to shore. But they were no match for it and the boat was out of control.

Tim knew it would soon be swallowed by the waves.

“Everything went quiet in my head,”Tim recalled (回忆).“I was trying to figure out how to swim to the boys in a straight line.”

Tim took off his clothes and jumped into the water. Every 500 yards or so, he raised his head to judge his progress. “At one point, I considered turning back,” he says.“ I wondered if I was putting my life at risk.” After 30 minutes of struggling, he was close enough to yell to the boys, “Take down the umbrella!”

Christian made much effort to take down the umbrella. Then Tim was able to catch up and climb

aboard the boat. He took over rowing, but the waves were almost too strong for him.

“Let's aim for the pier (码头),” Jack said. Tim turned the boat toward it. Soon afterward, waves crashed over the boat, and it began to sink. “Can you guys swim?” he cried. “A little bit,” the boys said.

Once they were in the water, Tim decided it would be safer and faster for him to pull the boys toward the pier. Christian and Jack were wearing life jackets and floated on their backs. Tim swam toward land as water washed over the boys' faces.

“Are we almost there?” They asked again and again. “Yes,” Tim told them each time. After 30 minutes, they reached the pier.

21.Why did the two boys go to the sea?

A.to go boat rowing.

B.to get back their football.

C.to swim in the open water.

D.to test the umbrella as a sail.

22.What does “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

23.Why did Tim raise his head regularly?

A.to take in enough fresh air.

B.to consider turning back or not.

C.to check his distance from the boys.

D.to ask the boys to take down the umbrella.

24.How did the two boys finally reach the pier?

A.They were dragged to the pier by Tim.

B.They swam to the pier all by themselves.

C.They were washed to the pier by the waves.

D.They were carried to the pier by Tim on his back.

People believed for a long time that the heart was the center of a person's emotions. That is why the word "heart" is used in so many expressions about emotional situations.

One such expression is to "lose your heart" to someone. When that happens, you have fallen in love. But if the person who won your heart does not love you, then you are sure to have a "broken heart." In your pain and sadness, you may decide that the person you loved is "hard-hearted," and in fact, has a "heart of stone."

You may decide to "pour out your heart" to a friend. Telling someone about your personal problems can often make you feel better.

If your friend does not seem to understand how painful your broken heart is, you may ask her to "have a heart." You are asking your friend to show some sympathy for your situation. Your friend "has her heart in the right place" if she says she is sorry, and shows great concern for how you feel.

Your friend may, however, warn you not to "wear your heart on your sleeve." In other words, do not let everyone see how lovesick you are. When your heart is on your sleeve you are showing your deepest emotions.

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences.

Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares.

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce ,or possibly erase (抹去) the effect of painful memories.

In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.

The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it. Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.

“Some memories can ruin people’s lives . They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions,” said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. “This could relieve a lot of that suffering.”

But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because

memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, ” said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

34. The passage is mainly about _____.

36. We can infer from the passage that

A. people doubt the effects of the pills

B. the pill will stop people's bad experiences

C. taking the pill will do harm to people's health

37. Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with?

A. Some memories can ruin people's lives.

B. People want to get rid of bad memories.

C. Experiencing bad events makes us different from others.

D. The pill will reduce people's sufferings from bad memories.

I had just gone to bed after a very hard day when the phone rang. It was an eccentric(怪僻的) farmer. I had never met him before although I had often heard people talk about him. He sounded quite nervous and he had been talking for a minute or so before I understood anything. Even then what I could make out was that someone called Milly had had a very bad accident. I hadn’t the slightest idea who she was but I obviously had to go.

It had been snowing heavily that I didn’t know the way. I had been driving for at least an hour when I finally found his place. He was standing there, waiting for me. It seemed Milly had died. “She meant more to me than anyone…even my own wife!” he said. I could see that he had been crying. I thought something terrible had taken place, a possible scandal (丑闻) . I was even more shocked when he told me he had put her in the barn. “I wouldn’t leave her out in the cold!” he said.

Milly had clearly been a secret lover of his. I was about to tell him he could not expect me to cover anything up when he opened the barn door. He lifted his candle and I saw a dark figure on the ground. “She was such a good cow! I wouldn’t let anyone but a doctor touch her !” he said, and burst into tears again.

38.The underlined phrase “make out” in the first paragraph means____.

Unless we spend money to spot (认出,发现) and prevent asteroids (小行星) now, one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know it, say some scientists.

Asteroids are bigger versions of the meteoroids(流星体) that race across the night sky. Most orbit the sun far from Earth and don’t threaten us. But there are also thousands of asteroids whose orbits put them on a collision course with Earth.

But $500 million worth of new telescopes right now, then spend $10 million a year for the next 25

years to locate most of the space rocks. By the time we spot a fatal one, the scientists say, we’ll have a way to change its course.

Is it worth it? Two things experts consider when judging any risk are (i) How likely the event is; (2) How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think an asteroid big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare but if one did fall. It would be the end of

the world. “If we don’t take care of these bid asteroids, they’ll take care of us,” says one scientist. “it’s that simple.”

The cure, though, might be worse than the disease. Do we really want fleets(舰队,车队) of nuclear weapons sitting around on Earth? “the world has less fear from doomsday(毁灭性) rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them.” Said a New York Times article.

42. What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids?

A. They are heavenly bodies different in composition.

B. They are heavenly bodies similar in nature.

C. They are more asteroids than meteoroids.

D. Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids.

43. What do scientists say about the collision of an asteroid with Earth?

A. It is very unlikely but the danger exists.

B. Such a collision might occur once every 25 years.

C. Collisions of smaller asteroids with Earth occur more often than expected.

D. It’s still too early to say whether such a collision might occur.

44. What do people think of the suggestion of using nuclear weapons to alter the course of asteroids?

A. It sounds practical but it may not solve the problem.

B. It may create more problems than it might solve.

C. It is a waste of money because a collision of asteroids with Earth is very unlikely.

D. Further research should be done before it is proved applicable.

45. We can conclude from the passage that __

A. While pushing asteroids off course nuclear weapons would destroy the world.

B. Asteroids racing across the night sky are likely to hit Earth in the near future.

C. The worry about asteroids can be left to future generations since it is unlikely to happen in our lifetime.

D. Workable solutions still have to be found to prevent a collision of asteroids with Earth.

A. expect B. understand C. see clearly D. hear clearly

41. The person who told the story is probably a ____.

Nowadays, in the United States and other western countries, some teens are choosing to become vegetarians. That is, they choosing not to eat meat. There are many types of vegetarians, some of whom don’t even eat animal products such as milk, eggs, or yogurt. Having balanced meals is very important, especially for teens who are growing up. So why are they becoming vegetarians? Well, each person chooses to become vegetarian for different reasons. The most popular reason is just wanting to be healthier.

I decided to become vegetarian when I was 10 years old, and it was much easier than you might think. But as a vegetarian, I have had a difficult time getting the proper nutrition. Most doctors and scientists say that being vegetarian is very healthy, but many people aren’t choosing the correct food to supplement the protein in meat.

If you’re thinking about becoming vegetarian, make sure that you look at your diet very carefully. And of course, pay special attention to your health when doing so. Being vegetarian isn’t for everyone, so don’t be discouraged if you can’t give up hamburgers and meat dumpling! Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence and feelings. In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the northeast and the middle west, it is very hot sometimes and very cold sometimes. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.

The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 study by scientists showed

that the IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often do worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).

Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But big people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.

Low air pressure may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. There is “good weather ” for work and health. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.

Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today? It may be the weather’s fault. 39. __________ can have a bad effect on health. A. Hot and wet weather B. Good weather C. Warm weather

D. High intelligence

40. People may have more intelligence when __________ comes.

QQ coins are popular among Chinese teenagers. They use real money to buy Web money. They then buy clothes for their online characters or services for their online pets with it. But these fancy items will cost QQ fans more in the future.

The government will put a tax of 3 percent on online sales. For example, if QQ users pay 100 yuan for 110 QQ coins now, they will have to spend 103 yuan in the future. The extra three yuan is tax.

Last Monday, our capital became the first city to carry out the policy. Online gamers have to pay the tax, too. They often use Web money to buy better equipment and new powers for their online characters. A number of players make money by spending a lot of time on the games to gain powers, and then selling them on.

Experts said that online trade has grown fast in recent years. There is more than 10 billion yuan of real money in online trade a year in China.

However, the government’s new move has become a hot topic among Internet users around the country. In a survey by Sina.com in October, more than 70 percent of about 3,000 surveyed were against it. They said the tax is too much.

But supporters said the government’s better management of the Internet would help it become

healthier. They believe the new move would help stop online identity theft. 42. We can tell from the story that QQ coins are __________. A. a kind of game software B. a special Web money C. some fancy clothes

D. some online pets 43. __________ became the first city to carry out the policy.

We are often told by parents: Don’t spend more than you have. It seems that the people who run several big US companies never learned that lesson.

Over the past weeks, a number of US banks have gone out of business. Millions of people have lost their money. Thousands of workers have lost their jobs and college students with financial majors are worried about their futures. The financial crisis that began last year has taken a turn for the worse.

Experts say the crisis was caused by banks lending too much money. With rising oil prices and falling house prices, many people and companies who borrowed money have found themselves unable to pay it back. This has left the banks out of pocket.

However, the financial storm that swept the US is now affecting the rest of the world. This is because the US economy is the largest in the world and the US dollar the most used currency in global trade. Experts say that all other countries will suffer as a result of the weakness of the US economy.

If so, China will be one of the first countries to hurt. Only Japan has lent more than China to the US. The recent bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers is very likely to cause a big loss to seven Chinese banks. All together they lent $721 million to the 158-year-old US bank.

Moreover, the US is the second largest buyer of Chinese goods. China will suffer a great loss if Americans have less money in pockets to spend on Chinese goods. 45. Why did a number of US banks have gone out of business?

A .Because millions of people have lost of their money. B. Because thousands of workers have lost their jobs.

C. Because people and companies borrowed too much money from them but was unable to pay it back.

D. because the people who run big companies lend too much money. 46. Which is NOT right according to the passage?

A. College students with financial majors are worried about their futures.

B. The financial storm is affecting the USA as well as the other countries in the world.

C. The other countries won’t suffer from the financial storm except US. D. China will also be hurt by the result of the weakness of the US economy. 47. From this passage, we know __________.

A. the situation of the financial crisis has become better this year.

B. if Americans have less money to buy Chinese goods, China will suffer a great loss. C. the Us government did nothing about the worse situation.

D. all the Chinese banks have to suffer a big loss caused by the recent bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers.

“No, Jack!” said Emily. “I want to swim against Tina Dawson. I want to beat her!”

“Well, OK,” said Jack. “We must go, anyway. Come on. The race is starting in a minute.” Emily looked at the crowd, but she couldn’t see her dad.

The race started. Emily felt the cold water on her body. “Swim!” she said to herself, again and again. “Swim!”

After three hundred metres she was in front. The crowd cheered loudly. But then Dawson went past her. A minute passed, then Emily was the leader, but then it was Dawson again. The other side of Picton Lake wasn’t far away now. Ten metres from the finish, Dawson and Emily were neck and neck. Emily thought about her dad and her mum. Suddenly Dawson was behind her. The crowd

cheered. Emily was the winner!

Emily walked up the beach, exhausted, but happy. Someone was running towards her. It was her dad, and he was smiling!

How many kinds of shapes can you name? If something is round, what do you call it? You call it a circle. What can you see around you that looks like a circle?

Another shape is square. A square has four sides. Each side is the same length. A square has four corners called right angles.

A triangle is also a shape. The prefix “tri” on the base word “angle” mean “three”. A triangle always has three sides and three angles.

All the pages of your textbooks have four square corners, but the pages are not square. Can you tell why not? It is because the sides of each page are longer than the ends. Shapes like this are rectangles. You can say that they are rectangular shapes. 54. Please draw a square in a circle.

55. Please draw a rectangle, and show the right marks of “side & end”.
