Thanks partly to the efforts(努力) of first lady Michelle Obama, most schools are trying to make school lunches more nutritious (有营养) and less fattening. But there is more to lunch than food, and many schools are missing chances for teachable(能教育) moments.

If you are older than 50, you may remember when students had enough time at lunch to go home and eat with their mothers. These days, Mother is most likely at work, and lunch is a school activity.

I remember my first day at Greenwich Country Day School after seven years in a public elementary school. The biggest difference between the two schools was lunch. At the private school, there was no cafeteria; there was a dining room. Every day at noon, we dined at big round tables. We sat on chairs, not benches. A teacher sat at each table, and children took turns going 1o a counter to get food. We used real plates and stainless-steel cutlery (不锈钢餐具), not plastic forks and trays. The teacher at the table led the conversation, and everyone was expected to join it. Children took turns clearing off and cleaning the table at the end of the meal.

I still remember conversations from those lunches 50 years ago. Lunch was part of the instruction and treated as part of the school‟s task, which is to “enable all children in our care to discover and to develop what is finest in themselves—to achieve the highest standards in their studies, in their play, and in their character.”

Greenwich Country Day is one of the country‟s richest schools, but civilized dining can be an important part of education. Echo Hill Outdoor School in Maryland, where I also used to work, runs on a small amount of money. The dining hall is a wooden building with large windows that helps children feel relaxed. Echo Hill uses its hour-long lunch period for teacher-led conversation, songs about the environment and a survey of how much food was wasted. Lunch is part of the curriculum (课程), but it is so relaxing that kids don‟t realize they are learning something of value.

It is generally accepted that American families do not eat together as much as they used to. For this reason, it is more important than ever that school lunches become a time for civilized conversation and behavior. With a few changes, school lunch can be an important part of the curriculum and part of a way of teaching young people the best values.

It is 40 meters long and 6 meters wide. This must be the biggest bus you have ever seen. It can carry 1,200 to 1,400 people.

It is China‟s new Super Bus. It is going for a test run in Beijing at the end of this year. Some other cities are also interested in running the Super Bus. They hope it can solve traffic problems.

The Super Bus runs along fixed tracks (固定轨道). The bus sits on top of two 2.2-meter-tall legs. The legs have wheels at one end. Small cars can drive under the bus, so the Super Bus does not take up road space.

The bus runs on electricity and solar power (太阳能). It can travel up to 60km every hour. Its creator, Song Youzhou, says it can reduce a lot of traffic jams (堵塞).

The Super Bus can do the work of 40 buses. In that way, it can save 860 tons of fuel (燃料) every year, according to Song.

“To build a Super Bus and its track costs less than building subways. Subways are nearly ten times more expensive to build.” Song said.

Some people worry that the Super Bus may not be safe. However, Song says there‟s no need for concern. The Super Bus has laser scanners (激光扫描仪) between its legs. The scanners make sure the cars keep a safe distance.
