As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is for a healthy mind and body.

Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing as often to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor and ill health.

The amount of stress a person can stand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime for managerial responsibilities; others lose heart at the first sign of unusual difficulties. When to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between “flight or fight” and in more primitive (远古的) days the choices made the difference between life or death. The we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes . Since we can’t remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.

We all remember seeing hitchhikers, standing by the side of the road, thumb sticking out, waiting for a lift. But it is getting nowadays. What killed hitchhiking? is often mentioned as a reason. Movies about murderous hitchhikers and real-life crime have put many drivers off hitchhikers. That no single women picked me up on my journey to Manchester no doubt the safety fear: a large, strangely dressed man is seen as dangerous.

But the reason may be more : hitchhiking happens where people don’t have cars and transport services are poor. Plenty of people still hitchhike in Poland and Romania. Perhaps the rising level of in the UK means the few people left hitchhiking are usually considered strange. Why can’t they afford cars?

In the study, UK researchers found that a protein-heavy, low-carbohydrate diet created certain whether high-protein diets of any colon diseases, but the findings raise that possibility.

Diets high in protein and lower in carbohydrates have been shown to help heavy people lose weight. “People should not be from losing weight,” Dr Flint said.

, he added, they should make sure that any weight loss plan includes adequate amounts of fiber (纤维) and a high protein over months to years might have ill effects on the colon.

The findings are based on seventeen overweight men who three short-term diets: a one-week menu plan to keep their weight; a four-week high-protein diet with amounts of carbohydrates; and a four-week high-protein diet low in carbohydrates.

On average, the study found when the men were on the high-protein diets, they had higher levels of substances known as N-nitrous compounds (亚硝基化合物) that have been

cancer. And when they were on the high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, they had lowered amounts of fiber-originated compounds (源自纤维的混合物) thought to be protective against .

Exactly what those changes might mean for a person’s health is ; But Flint said that the findings suggest that people should be aware of consuming too much protein and too little fiber over a long period. , experts recommend that adults get about 28 grams of fiber per day—though it’s not known whether that’s enough for someone on a high-protein weight-loss diet.

In fact, he had been so lonely that he drowned his feeling with food. As a result, he had put on a lot of weight, and this gave the kids something more to make fun of him.

Every morning my father buys a newspaper on his way to work. Every evening my mother reads magazines at home. And every night, I look at the posters with photos of David Beckham and Yao Ming on my bedroom wall before I go to sleep. Can we life without paper or print?

Paper was first created about 2, 000 years ago, and has been made from silk, cottons, bamboo, and since the 19th century, from wood. People learned to write words on paper to make a book. But in those days, books could be produced one at a time by hand and they were expensive and rare. Because there weren’t many books, few people learned to read. Then printing was invented in China. When printing was developed greatly at the beginning of the 11th century, books could be produced more quickly and cheaply. Then more people learned to read. After that, knowledge and spread quickly.

Today information can be received online,

downloaded from the Internet rather than found in books, and information can be kept on CD-ROMs or machines, MP3 players.

gone More are likely to follow. In March the of a large-scale, 24-year survey gave one of the clearest pictures yet of the decline of Australian and Asian shorebirds, including the long-distance migrants (候鸟) that are most difficult to . The results of the survey are awful.

Every October for more than two decades, teams from the University of New South Wales in Australia counted birds from an airplane flown low over 130,000 square miles of wetlands in the eastern third of the continent. Their showed a steady decline, beginning in the mid-1980s. By 2006 the number of migratory shorebirds had dropped by 73 percent and the number of Australia’s resident of shorebirds had fallen by 81 percent. “The

of the decline took us by surprise,” says evolutionary ecologist Silke Nebel of the University of Western Ontario in London, the lead author of the report.

The survey that inland wetlands were more important to both resident and migratory birds than had been , and that wetland loss from damming (筑坝) and the diversion (分散) of river water for irrigation was at least in part for the shorebird decline in Australia. But wetlands are becoming smaller in countries all along the major flyway that from eastern Siberia to New

Zealand, the study’s authors note, so protecting the 8 million birds that use the corridor will require an international solution.

III. Reading Comprehension

Section A

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

The motor vehicle has killed and disabled more people in its brief history than any bomb or weapon ever invented. Much of the blood on the street flows essentially from uncivil behavior of drivers who refuse to respect the legal and moral rights of others. So the massacre (大屠杀) on the road may be regarded as a(n) problem.

In fact, the enemies of society on wheels are rather harmless people, just ordinary people acting you might say. But it is a both of law and common morality that carelessness is no excuse when one’s actions could bring death or damage to others. A minority of the go even beyond carelessness to total irresponsibility.

Researchers have estimated that as many as 80 percent of all automobile accidents can be attributed to (归因于) the condition of the driver. Emotional upsets can affect drivers’ reactions, slow their judgment, and blind them to dangers that might otherwise be

for every driver to make a conscious effort to keep one’s emotions under control.

Yet drivers are not the only ones to blame for the irresponsibility that accounts for much of the problem. Street walkers break traffic regulations, they are at fault in most vehicle walker accidents; and many cyclists even that they are not subject to the basic rules of the road.

Significant legal advances have been made towards safer driving in the past few years. Safety for vehicle have been raised both at the point of manufacture and through periodic road-worthiness inspections. , the accident rate has decreased. But the accident experts still worry because there has been little or no improvement in the way drivers behave. The only real and lasting , say the experts, is to convince people that driving is a skilled task. It constant care and concentration. Those who fail to do all these things present a(n) to those with whom they share the road.
