Do you have a vegetable garden? Have you ever watched a

seed (种子) sprout (发芽), grow and fruit until it became the

tomato on your plate? If you go to school in the US, there’s a

good chance you have.

At the moment, nearly 20 percent of schools in the US

have their own vegetable gardens that are planted and cared for

by students. Next year, even more schools will have gardens

and more US kids will know the pleasure of growing their own food.

Much of the growing interest in planting comes from First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” project, which started last year. The First Lady wants to improve children’s nutrition (营养) in the US — and she began her project by planting a garden at the White House with the help of some local kids. The kids were more interested in eating the vegetables from their garden than in eating fast food. This gave the First Lady an idea.

Because so many US kids eat breakfast and lunch at school, the food should be healthy and good. Why not let kids grow the food for their own cafeterias (食堂)? Mrs .Obama’s plan gives money to schools to start their own gardens, and more school gardens are sprouting up every day.

Students also use the information from their gardens to study science and math, and they paint pictures of their gardens in art class. Many students choose to work in the garden instead of playing on the playground during their noon break. Sound like fun? Ask your teacher if there’s room for a garden at your school, too.

38 Much of the growing interest in planting comes from ___________.

A. The First Lady’s “Our Garden” project

B. The First Lady’s money

C. The First Lady’s ideas

D. The First Lady’s “Let’s Move” project

39. Why should the food be healthy and good?

A. Because so many US kids aren’t healthy.

B. Because so many US kids eat breakfast and lunch at school.

C. Because so many US kids’ nutrition is good enough.

D. Because so many US kids grow vegetables.

40. According to the story, which statement is NOT true?

A. The “Let’s Move” project started last month.

B. The First Lady began planting a garden with the help of some local school kids.

C. Next year, more US kids will have the pleasure of growing their own food.

D. Students use the information from their gardens to study science and math.

41. According to the story, we learn that ___________.

A. Every school in the US has its own vegetable garden

B. All kids in the US grow the food for their own cafeterias

C. First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” project was unsuccessful

D. Students can learn a lot from their gardens

There is nothing worse than the sound of someone snoring (打呼噜) if you are trying to fall asleep. Maybe people laugh at you about the noise you make in your sleep. Snoring isn’t just noisy. Sometimes it is a sign of a serious medical problem that should be treated by a doctor.

Snoring can happen to anyone, young or old. Snoring happens when a person can’t move air freely through his or her nose and mouth during sleep. People usually find out they snore from the people who live with them. Kids may find out they snore from a brother or sister or from a friend who sleeps over. Snoring keeps other people awake and probably doesn’t let the snoring person get top quality rest, either.

People with this disorder often wake up with bad headaches and feel exhausted all day long. They may be very sleepy and have difficulty staying awake while having a conversation or even while driving. Kids affected by snoring may be angry easily and have difficulty concentrating(集中注意力), especially in school and with homework.

According to the government survey, there are hundreds of anti-snoring devices(抵制打呼的设备) on the market. However, they may only work because they keep you awake. Other solutions include blocking the top of the bed up a few inches, changing sleeping positions and not eating a heavy meal or not drinking alcohol before bedtime. These kinds of “cures” may work only for someone who snores sometimes and lightly, or they may not work at all. If you can’t stop snoring or the snoring becomes heavy, it’s a good idea to see a doctor. Some people need to lose weight or change their diets to stop snoring. Sometimes medicines, or even surgeries are necessary.

42. If a kid snores during his sleeping time, he may ________.

A. have the top quality sleep B. do well in his or her homework

C. have enough energy for school work D. be angry with others

43. What does the underlined word “blocking” mean?

A. 堵住 B. 堆方块 C. 分区域

44. Which is not right to treat the snoring persons?

A. Use anti-snoring devices to keep them awake.

B. Lose weight or change their diets to stop snoring.

C. Change sleeping positions for serious snoring people.

D. Take some medicine or have a surgery.

45. Which is the best title for this passage?

A. Solving a snoring problem B. How to sleep well

C. The snoring persons D. You are snoring, You are awake

13 I love you, Mom

I WROTE my first poem when I was 5 years old. It was for Mother’s Day. At that time, I was more worried about making rhymes (韵律) than making sense. My poem went like this: “Mother’s Day is

something special. And then you will find a wishing well!”

The poem was not my best work, but my mom kept it – just like she kept every other piece of writing and artwork I ever made. She also kept my baby clothes, a piece of hair from my first haircut and

embarrassing pictures of my sister and me as little kids. Sometimes we feel like our mom runs a museum of our lives, and she’s the only visitor.

When I was 13 years old, a boy gave me an important gift. It was a smile.

It was the early autumn of my first year at a junior high school, and my old school was far away. As a result, no one knew who I was. I was very lonely, and afraid to make friends with anyone.

Every time I heard the other students talking and laughing, I felt my heart break. I couldn’t talk to anyone about my problem, and I didn’t want my parents to worry about me.

Then one day, my classmates talked happily with their friends, but I sat at my desk unhappily as usual. At that moment, a boy entered the classroom. I didn’t know who he was. He passed me and then turned back. He looked at me and, without a word, smiled. Suddenly, I felt the touch of something bright and friendly. It made me feel happy, lively and warm.

C. make much noise

( )33. You should ____________ at the theatre.

One day, I asked him why he smiled, but he couldn’t remember smiling at me!

It doesn’t matter because all the dark days have gone. Now I believe that the world is what you think it is. If you think you are lonely, you might always be alone. So smile at the world and it will smile back.

“How old are you?” the radio studio manager at WXBN looked down at me. “Fifteen,” I said.

“And you want a job in radio? Shouldn’t you be at school?” he asked.

How could I explain? I’ve always loved the radio. When I was about four or five years old, I remember sitting close to the radio in the living room, listening to my favourite programmes, and to the voices of my At the age of nine, I asked for jobs in small radio stations.

As I grew older, my interest in radio grew. One day I learnt about Internet radio. Once a week, I played my favourite music from my father’s computer to the listeners, talked about life at school, and then closed down and did my homework.

Soon my friends at junior high school started to listen, and then they wanted to help. We prepared the weekly programmes, articles about music, sports news, jokes and the weather report (I did this by looking out of the window).

“OK, come with me,” the WXBN manager said. I sat down in the studio, in front of a microphone. He was in another room, behind the glass wall.

“OK, let’s do a sound check. Just tell me what you had for breakfast.” All radio presenters began work with the same question. “I had eggs, fruit and some milk.”

“OK, that’s great!” the man behind the glass said.

Do you have a vegetable garden? Have you ever watched a

seed (种子) sprout (发芽), grow and fruit until it became the

tomato on your plate? If you go to school in the US, there’s a

good chance you have.

At the moment, nearly 20 percent of schools in the US

The kids were more interested in eating the vegetables from their garden than in eating fast food. This gave the First Lady an idea.

Because so many US kids eat breakfast and lunch at school, the food should be healthy and good. Why not let kids grow the food for their own cafeterias (食堂)? Mrs .Obama’s plan gives money to schools to start their own gardens, and more school gardens are sprouting up every day.

12. If a kid snores during his sleeping time, he may ________.

Leon, 12, was born without fingers on his left hand. That didn't -stop him from being able to do many tasks. But Leon could not grasp more than one object at a time. So Leon's father, Paul, created a prosthesis(假肢),using a 3D printer. Now Leon has fingers that open and close."It was a

Whenever we turn on the TV or radio, read the newspapers, surf the Internet, we'll be

surrounded by the word "diet" everywhere. We have so easily been attracted by the promise of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically(心理上地)and physically.

It's obvious that diet products weaken us psychologically. They allow us to jump over the

thinking stage that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the

consumption of fat. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word "diet" in food labels. What's more, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a

zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves that we don't have to work to get results.Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and

struggle.

As a matter of fact, the danger that diet products bring not only lies in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm they cause. Diet foods and diet pills contain zero

calorie. oaly because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products, And they can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are stopping our bodies having basic nutrients. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.

Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Think twice before buying diet products. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, 3rd therefore, prevent the psychological and physical harm that comes from using them.

28. From Paragraph 1, A. diet products are in our daily life B. people have trouble choosfng diet products

C. people should put up with diet products D. diet products are misleading people

A. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods B, pay attention to their daily diet

C. watch their weight rather than their diet D. try out varieties of diet foods

A. diet products cause no pain B, it costs a lot to.lose weight

C. losing weight is effortless D. diet products are free of fat and calories

31.Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products

A. are over-consumed B. are short of basic nutrients

C. lack chemicals D. provide too much energy

如果先行词reason在从句中做主语或宾语时,则用that或which,不用why;

③by reason of由于……的缘故;

④for...reason/reasons由于……的原因;

⑤out of all reason不合情理;

⑥with reason有充分的理由。

reason与cause用法不同:reason侧重指某种看法或行为的理由,与for连用;cause侧重指某个事实或现象的原因,与of连用。
