We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loud crash in the street. Earlier that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It seemed like this would be a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly practice her

driving, so I sent her to the store in my truck. At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my truck. I enjoyed having it, but I said: "Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won't last forever. Never set your heart on anything that won't last. "After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted: "Dad! Dad, Holly crashed your truck. "

My heart sank and my mind was flooded with conflicting thoughts. Was anyone hurt? Who else was involved? As I ran to the door, I heard a voice in my heart say: "Here is a chance to show Holly what you really love. She'll never forget it. "

The accident had occurred in my own driveway. Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van. In her inexperience, she had confused the brakes and the gas pedal (油门]). Holly was unhurt physically but when I reached her, she was crying and saying: "Oh, Dad, I'm sorry. I know how much you love this truck. "I held her in my arms as she cried.

Later that week a friend stopped by and asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened (润湿) and she said: "That happened to me when I was a girl. I borrowed my dad's car and ran into a log that had fallen across the road. I ruined the car. When I got home my Dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me. "

Over 40 years later, she still felt the pain of the night. It was a deep wound on her soul.

I remember how sad Holly was on the night she crashed our truck, and how I

comforted her. One day, when Holly thinks back on her life, I want her to know that I love her a thou- sand times more than any piece of property.

I repaired the van, but the dent (凹陷) in my truck is still there today. Every day it re- minds me of what really matters in my life.

Scientists have found that human eyes are more likely to be damaged by UV rays (紫外线) while skiing in the snow-covered areas than sitting on the beach, according to a report by the UK newspaper The Telegraph.

The researchers at Kanazawa Medical University, Japan and American company Johnson

Johnson conducted the study together. They looked at the effects of light reflection on newly fallen snow on a ski trail (a rough path) in Ishikawa District, northern Japan. They compared the results with the levels of UV rays on a sand beach in southern Japan's Okinawa District.

They found that on the beach, eyes are exposed to a daily 260 kilojoules (千焦耳) of UV a square meter compared to 658 kilojoules in snow-covered areas.

The findings are supported by the Japan Meteorological Agency. According to the agency, the reflection rate of UV light on beaches is often between 10 and 25 percent, compared to 80 percent in the new snow areas. The amount of light increased 4 percent with a 300-meter rise in height.

our skin before we get out in the sun. But many of us may not realize that UV rays are also harmful to the eyes.

If your eyes are exposed to large amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time, you may experience a kind of sunburn of the eye, which is harmful. Your eyes will become red and feel a strange feeling. They may be sensitive to light. Fortunately, this is usually temporary (暂时的) and seldom causes permanent damage to the eyes.

Long-term exposure to UV radiation, however, can be more serious. Scientific studies and researches have shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a period of many years increases the chance of eye damage, which could lead to total blindness.

68. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

D. The study was conducted by researchers from Japan, the USA and the UK.

69. The underlined word "sunscreen" in Paragraph 5 most probably means ______.

A. sunglasses B. sunhat C. suncream D. sunburn

70. What will the passage most probably talk about next?

A. Never ski on newly fallen snow in Japan.

Italians like to say that when it comes to alcohol, they have a sipping(小酌) culture rather than a drinking culture. That means that while Italians may enjoy a glass of wine or beer, they don't usually get very drunk.

That's not true any more. The new study by the Italian National Health Institute found that 63 percent of Italians under age 18 get drunk on the weekends. Now, the city of Milan has created a law that will stop anyone under 16 from buying alcohol. Anyone who sells or gives alcohol to a person under 16 can be fined up to $700.

Young people who feel that the new law is unfair should go to the US for some perspective (观点). The US has the highest drinking age in the world: It's illegal for anyone under 21 to buy alcohol, and stores or restaurants that are caught selling alcohol to people

Who else was involved? As I ran to the door, I heard a voice in my heart say: “Here is u really love. She’ll never forget it.”

The accident had occurred in my own driveway. Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van (搬运车). In her inexperience, she had the brakes and the gas pedal. Holly was when I reached her, she was crying and saying:“Oh, Dad, I’m sorry. I know how much you love this truck.” I held her in my arms as she cried.

Later that week a friend stopped by and asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened(湿润) and she said: “That happened to me when I was a girl. I borrowed my dad’s car anda log that had fallen across the road. I ruined the car. When I got home my Dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me.”

Over 40 years later, she still felt the pain of the night. It was a deep wound on her .

I remember how sad Holly was the night she crashed our truck, and how I comforted her. One day, when Holly her a thousand times more than any piece of property.

I repaired the van, but the dent(凹陷) in my truck is still there today. Every day it reminds me of what really matters in my life.

I went into Harrods in London (a huge department store I am sure you have heard of) to buy some Minton china plates for a wedding anniversary which was to be a group gift from friends to other friends in Geneva.

Having only 30 minutes between meeting. I whizzed there in a taxi from the office and battled through the milling people on the 2nd day of the sales on the ground floor up to the 5th to the china department. There was a man standing there who was obviously a sales person who I rushed up to and asked if he had this particular china in stock and if it would take long to wrap, etc. He was amazing. He got the plates in seconds, wrapped them up and asked me if I wanted a store card, to which I replied no, because I lived in Switzerland, to which he replied asking if, as I lived abroad, would like a tax rebate form(退税表). After that he showed me what to do, produced a map of the store and told me where I should go for the formalities(程序). That was fabulous! I thanked him and said what wonderful service he had given me. I even asked if he gave this to everyone, to which he answered: “I’m just doing what is required at Harrods”. With that, a tall man in a gray suit approached me and offered his hand to shake mine saying, “Can I introduce myself? I am the Chief Executive of Harrods and what an interesting conversation I have just heard…” He had been wandering through the store (as you should do as a hands-on CEO) and had overheard me thanking this salesman, whose face, I can hardly describe, was frozen in a mixture of delight awe and astonishment!

Can you imagine the salesman going home to his family and friends recounting what the CEO spoke to him after overhearing him being praised by a customer?
