第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卷上将该选项标号涂黑。

A

It all began with a stop at a red light.

Kevin Salwen was driving his 14-year-old daughter, Hannah, back from a sleepover in 2006 . While waiting at a traffic light, they saw a black Mercedes Coupe on one side and a homeless man begging for food on the other.

“Dad, if that man had a less nice car, that man there could have a meal.”Hannah protested. The light changed and they drove on, but Hannah was too young to be reasonable. She pestered (纠缠)her parents about inequity, insisting that she wanted to do something.

“What do you want to do?” her mom responded. “Sell our house?”

Warning! Hannah seized upon the idea of selling the luxurious family home and donating half the proceeds to charity, while using the other half to buy a more modest replacement home.

Eventually, that‟s what the family did. The project —crazy, impetuous (鲁莽的) and utterly inspiring — is written down in detail in a book by father and daughter scheduled to be published next month: “The Power of Half.” It‟s a book that, frankly, I‟d be nervous about leaving around where my own teenage kids might find it. An impressionable child reads this, and the next thing you know your whole family is out on the street.

At a time of enormous needs in Haiti and elsewhere, when so many Americans are trying to help Haitians by sending everything from text messages to shoes, the Salwens offer an example of a family that came together to make a difference — for themselves as much as the people they were trying to help. In a column a week ago, it described neurological evidence from brain scans that unselfishness lights up parts of the brain normally associated with more primary satisfaction. The Salwens‟ experience confirms the selfish pleasures of selflessness.

Mr. Salwen and his wife, Joan, had always assumed that their kids would be better off in a bigger house. But after they downsized, there was much less space to retreat to, so the family members spent more time around each other. A smaller house unexpectedly turned out to be a more family-friendly house.

41. The best title for the passage should be “______”.

A. The Less, the Better B. An Expected Satisfaction

C. Something We Can Live Without D. Somewhat Crazy but Inspiring

42. What does the underlined word “inequity” most probably mean in Paragraph 3?

A. Unfairness. B. Satisfaction.

C. Personal attitude. D. Reasonable statement.

43. What does the underlined sentence “Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager.”

mean? ______

A. Never give a quick answer to an idealistic teenager.

B. Unless a child is realistic, never give an answer immediately.

C. Give an answer if the child is reasonable.

D. Don‟t respond to a child's demands firmly without consideration

B

Have you ever picked a job based on the fact that you were good at it but later found it made If you ignore your personality, it will hurt you long-term regardless of your skills or the job‟s pay. There are several areas of your personality that you need to consider to help you find a good job. Here are a few of those main areas;

1) Do you prefer working alone or with other people?

There are isolating jobs that will drive an outgoing person crazy and also interactive jobs that will make a shy person uneasy. Most people are not extremes in either direction but do have a tendency that they prefer. There are also positions that are sometimes a combination of the two, which may be best for someone in the middle who adapts easily to either situation.

2) How do you handle change?

Most jobs these days have some elements of change to them, but some are more than others. If you need stability in your life, you may need a job where the changes don't happen so often. Other people would be bored of the same daily routine.

3) Do you enjoy working with computers?

I do see this as a kind of personality characteristic. There are people who are happy to spend more than 40 hours a week on a computer, while there are others who need a lot of human interaction throughout the day. Again, these are extremes and you'll likely find a lot of positions somewhere in the middle as well.

4) What type of work environment do you enjoy?

This can range from being in a large building with a lot of people you won't know immediately to a smaller setting where you'll get to know almost all the people there fairly quickly.

5) How do you like to get paid?

Some people are motivated by the pay they get, while others feel too stressed to be like that. The variety of payment designs in the sales industry is a typical example for this.

Anyway, these are a great starting point for you. I've seen it over and over again with people that they make more money over time when they do something they love. It may take you a little longer, but making a move to do what you have a passion for can change the course of your life for the better.

46. What is unnecessary in your job hunting?

A. Assessing your skills B. Going to different areas

C. Matching your skills with a position D. taking your personality into consideration

47. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Isolating jobs usually drive people mad. B. Interactive jobs make people shy easily.

C. Extreme people tend to work with others. D. Almost everyone has a tendency in jobs.

48. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph one mean?

A. Before you select your job, you should assess your skills and match them with your

position

B. There are more important things than assessing skills and match them with the position

when you select job.

C. Nothing is important than assessing skills and match them with the position when you

select job.

D. You should ignore your skills when you select job.

C

The latest research suggests that the key factor separating geniuses from the merely accomplished is not I.Q., a generally bad predictor of success. Instead, it‟s purposeful practice. Top performers spend more hours practising their craft. It you wanted to picture how a typical genius might develop, you‟d take a girl who possessed a slightly above average language ability. It wouldn‟t have to be a big talent, just enough so that she might gain some sense of distinction. Then you would want her to meet, say, a novelist, who coincidentally shared some similar qualities. Maybe the writer was from the same town, had the same family background, or shared the same birthday.

This contact would give the girl a vision of her future self. It would hive her some idea of a

第二部分:阅读理解(第一节20小题, 第二节5小题,每小题2分,满分50分)

第一节, 阅读下面材料,根据所给的4个选项 A,B,C和D中选出最佳选项, 并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。 A

BAD weather, bad food and grumpy people – that‘s what some people think of first when they think about Britain. Many online commentators even joke that Britons are so grumpy precisely because it constantly rains and they are always hungry.

In fact, many believe that Britons are inherently negative, in contrast to their neighbors across the Atlantic Ocean.

―Americans are more optimistic, due to the fact that they are told they can become the next president of the United States,‖ Ricky Gervais, a British comedian, told online forum Big Think. ―British people are told, it won‘t happen to you. And they carry that. They carry that with them. We champion the underdog .‖

It‘s no wonder that Britons hold the reputation of having a ―stiff upper lip‖ – being cold and not showing any emotion.

Britain‘s reputation as a grumpy country may, however, simply be the result of a cultural misunderstanding. According to the BBC, British actor Michael Caine once said: ―I think what is British about me is my feelings and awareness of others and their situations. English people are always known to be well-mannered and cold, but we are not cold – we don‘t interfere in your situation. If we are heartbroken, we don‘t scream in your face with tears – we go home and cry on our own. It‘s completely to do with your comfort – we don‘t intrude on your space. That‘s very English.‖

A BBC reader noted that the perceived coldness of British people is actually their way of dealing with hardship. Remembering the terrorist attacks in London on July 7, 2005, Stuart Colley, who lived in the capital at the time, said: ―It seemed to me that most people‘s response was a ‗cruel‘ determination to carry on and not to ‗fall‘ into an over-emotional outpouring of grief or anger – despite what many of us felt inside. Our stiff upper lip seems to be something that gives us strength as a society when we most need it.‖

41. What is the author‘s main purpose in writing the article?

A. To list common stereotypes about the UK.

B. To fight common misunderstandings about the UK.

C. To analyze what makes British people grumpy and negative.

D. To list some differences between Americans and British people.

42. Which of the following statements might Ricky Gervais agree with?

A. Britons like challenging the underdog more than Americans do.

B. Americans are more optimistic and realistic than British people.

C. Britons are more comfortable with life‘s losers than Americans.

D. Bad weather in the UK is the main thing that makes Britons grumpy.

43. The underlined phrase ―interfere in‖ in the second-to-last paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.

A. think about B. benefit from C. get in the way of D. have a positive effect on

44. Why does Michael Caine think British people are not cold?

A. They can be heartbroken, and they cry too.

B. They are well-mannered and unwilling to disturb others.

C. They care a lot about what other people think of them.

D. They are taught to face hardships by themselves.

45. With the example of the terrorist attacks in London on July 7, 2005, the author intends to ____.

A. explain why British people tend to be cold

B. reveal that Britons don‘t intrude on others‘ space

C. present a way in which British people hide their emotions and feelings

D. show how not giving in to emotions can help one to get through a tough time

If you‘ve ever owned a chimney, you know that it can get pretty dirty. There‘s a whole lot of soot that gets stuck on the inside. That stuff has to get cleaned, or you could have a serious fire risk. While nowadays we have easier ways of doing this dirty job, in the way back days somebody used to climb up the chimney and clean all that soot. And the thing is, not just anybody could do it.

You had to be really small to fit up in the chimney, so they used to give the task to kids – some as young as four or five years old. They worked for their boss known as a master-sweep. They were often covered in soot, and were very likely to get burned. They often developed what became known as soot wart, a form of cancer.

Are your unfairness bells ringing? William Blake‘s certainly were. The physical dangers and widespread unfairness of the chimney-sweeping job really stuck in his throat, so much so that he

The physical dangers and widespread unfairness of the chimney-sweeping job really stuck in his throat, so much so that he wrote not one, but two poems called ―The Chimney Sweeper‖.

The first poem (the one we‘re discussing here) was published in 1789 in a book called Songs of Innocence. These little poems took children and the joys of childhood innocence as their subject. As you‘ve probably guessed by now, many of the poems in Songs of Innocence, like ―The Chimney Sweeper‖, are about the ways in which childhood innocence is destroyed by unkind old adults. For Blake, innocence is, in many ways, a total joke. It doesn‘t exist, because it‘s always

English people are always known to be well-mannered and cold, but we are not cold – we don‘t situation.

The physical dangers and widespread unfairness of the chimney-sweeping job really stuck in his throat, so much so that he wrote not one, but two poems called ―The Chimney Sweeper‖.

The first poem (the one we‘re discussing here) was published in 1789 in a book called Songs

Dear Michelle:

Why can't my daughter manage her life better? She is 17 and an honor student, but she seems to be wasting her life away with a boyfriend who is holding her back.

He consumes every waking minute of her precious time and smooth-talks her as well.

His goal is to get her to agree to go to the college of his choice, not her choice, and because his grades are lower, his choice will be limited.

I feel like I want to rescue her, but she pushes me away and shuts me out. She has only brought us pride and joy; and now this! Help!

A worried mother Dear Mother of a 17-year-old Girl:

What's the matter with kids today? Remember that song from "Bye Bye Birdie"?

Well if you do not, let me fill you in about teenagers and their life-management skills. Do not expect too much too soon because at the ripe age of 17, life-management is not within their reach, not should it be.

Life experience creates both the conditions and the skills for management, and if management went before experience, there would be little of it.

Your daughter is an honor student for good reasons. She is smart, studies with intelligence and you have given her good Values.

It is rare for an honor student to change the path of their academic career for puppy love. That being said, there might be some adolescent wisdom in her behavior after all.

Perhaps she is choosing to worry you, her parents, for unconscious reasons. Being such a good girl and being a steady source of joy might have become a bit too much for her.

Let your daughter have her own private moment of 11th grade rebellion. She deserves a break from perfection.

The dirty, homeless man sat on the pavement, staring at the stones. He thought back more than twenty years to when he was a boy living in a small red brick house on this very street. He recalled the flower garden, the swing his dad made, and the bike he had saved up for months to buy.

another ten years. He had a job by then, plenty of friends and started to come home less. He did not really want to remember those years, nor the day when, because of debts, he had gone home planning to ask for money. He felt embarrassed, but he knew exactly where his dad kept the money. When his parents stepped out of the room, he took what he wanted and left.

That was the last time he had seen them. Ashamed, he went abroad, and his parents knew nothing about the years of wandering or time in prison. But locked in his cell he often thought of home. Once free, he would love to see his parents again, if they were still alive, and still wanted to see him.

When his prison time was up, he found a job, but couldn't settle. Something was drawing him home. He did not want to arrive penniless, so he hitchhiked most of the long journey back. But less than a mile from his destination he started to feel sick with doubt. Could they ever accept this man who had so bitterly disappointed them?

He spent most of that day sitting under a tree. That evening he posted a letter which, although short, had taken him hours to write. It ended with:

I know it is unreasonable of me to suppose you want to see me ... so it's up to you. I'll come early Thursday morning. If you want me home, hang a white handkerchief in the window of my old bedroom. If it's there, I'll come

Warning! Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager. Hannah seized upon the idea of selling the luxurious family home and donating half the proceeds to charity, while using the other half to buy a more modest replacement home.

Eventually, that’s what the family did. The project —crazy, impetuous (鲁莽的) and utterly inspiring — is written down in detail in a book by father and daughter scheduled to be published next month: “The Power of Half.” It’s a book that,

frankly, I’d be nervous about leaving around where my own teenage kids might find it.

The Salwens’ experience confirms the selfish pleasures of selflessness.

43. What does the underlined sentence “Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager.” mean? ______

Have you ever picked a job based on the fact that you were good at it but later found it made you feel very uncomfortable over time? When you select your career, there's a whole lot more to it than assessing your skills and matching them with a particular position. If you ignore your personality, it will hurt you long-term regardless of your skills or the job’s pay. There are several areas of your personality that you need to consider to help you find a good job. Here are a few of those main areas;

A. Before you select your job, you should assess your skills and match them with your position

B. There are more important things than assessing skills and match them with the position when you select job.

C. Nothing is important than assessing skills and match them with the position when you select job.

D. You should ignore your skills when you select job.
