It was Saturday. As always, it was a busy one, for “Six days shall you labor and do all your work” was taken seriously back then. Outside, Father and Mr. Patrick next door were busy chopping firewood. Inside their own houses, Mother and Mrs. Patrick were engaged in spring cleaning.

Somehow the boys had slipped away to the back lot with their kites. Now, even at the risk of having Brother caught to beat carpets , they had sent him to the kitchen for string(线). It seemed there was no limit to the heights to which kites would fly today.

My mother looked at the sitting room, its furniture disordered for a thorough sweeping, A gun she cast a look toward the window. “Come on, girls! Let’s take string to the boys and watch them

On the way we met Mrs. Patrick, laughing guiltily as if she were doing something wrong, together with her girls.

There never was such a day for flying kited! We played all our fresh string into the boys’ kites and they went up higher and higher .We could hardly distinguish the orange-colored spots of the kites. Now and then we slowly pulled one kite back,

watching it dancing up and down it the wind, and finally bringing it down to earth, just for the joy of sending it up again.

Even our fathers dropped their tools and joined us. Our mothers took their turn, laughing like schoolgirls. I think we were all beside ourselves. Parents forgot their duty and their dignity; children forgot their everyday fights and little jealousies. “Perhaps it’s like this in the kingdom of heaven,” I thought confusedly.

It was growing dark before we all walked sleepily back to house. I suppose we had some sort of supper. I suppose there must have been a surface tidying-up, for the house on Sunday looked clean and orderly enough. The strange thing was, we didn't mention that day afterward. I felt a little embarrassed .Surely none of the others had been as excited as I. I locked the memory up in that deepest part of me where we keep “the things that cannot be and yet they are.”

The years went on, then one day I was hurrying about my kitchen in a city

apartment, trying to get some work out of the way while my three-year-old insistently cried her desire to “go park ,see duck.”

“I can’t go!” I said. “I have this and this to do, and when I’m through I’ll be too tired to walk that for.”

My mother , who was visiting us , looked up from the peas she was shelling ,“It’s a wonderful day,” she offered,“Really warm , yet there’s a fine breezy . Do you remember that day we flew kites?”

I stopped in my dash between stove and sink. The looked door flew open and with it a rush of memories. “Come on.” I told my little girl. “You’re right, it’s too good a day to miss.”

Another decade passed. We were in the aftermath (余波)of a great war. All

evening we had been asking our returned soldier, the youngest Patrick Boy, about his experiences as a prisoner of war. He had talked freely, but now for a long time he had been silent. What was he thinking of – what dark and horrible things?

“Say!” A smile slipped out from his lips. “Do you remember --- no, of course you wouldn’t. It probably didn’t make the impression on you as it did on me.”

I hardly dared speak. “Remember what?”

“I used to think of that day a lot in POW camp(战俘营), when things weren’t too good. Do you remember the day we flew the kites?”

Passage 1

Not long ago, a mysterious Christmas card dropped through our mail slot. The envelope was addressed to a man named Raoul, who, I was relatively certain, did not live with us. The envelope wasn't sealed, so I opened it. The inside of the card was blank. Ed, my husband, explained that the card was both from and to the newspaper deliveryman. His name was apparently Raoul, and Raoul wanted a holiday tip. We were meant to put a check inside the card and then drop the envelope in the mail. When your services are rendered at 4 a.m., you can't simply hang around, like a hotel bellboy expecting a tip. You have to be direct.

So I wrote a nice holiday greeting to this man who, in my imagination, fires The New York Times from his bike aimed at our front door, causing more noise with mere newsprint than most people manage with sophisticated black market fireworks.

With a start, I realized that perhaps the reason for the 4 a.m. wake-up noise was not ordinary rudeness but carefully executed spite: I had not tipped Raoul in Christmases past. I honestly hadn't realized I was supposed to. This was the first time he'd used the card tactic. So I got out my checkbook. Somewhere along the line, holiday tipping went from an optional thank-you for a year of services to a Mafia-style protection racket.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 特别提醒:答案必须写在答题纸上,若写在试卷或草稿纸上无效。

Several days later, I was bringing our garbage bins back from the curb when I noticed an envelope taped to one of the lids. The outside of the envelope said MICKEY. It had to be another tip request, this time from our garbage collector. Unlike Raoul, Mickey hadn’t enclosed his own Christmas card from me. In a way, I appreciated the directness. “I know you don't care how merry my Christmas is, and that’s fine,” the gesture said. “I want $30, or I'll ‘forget’ to empty your garbage bin some hot summer day.”

I put a check in the envelope and taped it back to the bin. The next morning, Ed noticed that the envelope was gone, though the trash hadn't yet been picked up: "Someone stole Mickey's tip!" Ed was quite certain. He made me call the bank and cancel the check.

But Ed had been wrong. Two weeks later, Mickey left a letter from the bank on our steps. The letter informed Mickey that the check, which he had tried to cash, had been cancelled. The following Tuesday morning, when Ed saw a truck outside, he ran out with his wallet. “Are you Mickey?”

The man looked at him with scorn. “Mickey is the garbageman. I am the recycling.” Not only had Ed insulted this man by hinting that he was a garbageman, but he had obviously neglected to tip him. Ed ran back inside for more funds. Then he noticed that the driver of the truck had been watching the whole transaction. He peeled off another twenty and looked around, waving bills in the air. “Anyone else?”

Had we consulted the website of the Emily Post Institute, this embarrassing breach of etiquette could have been avoided. Under “trash/recycling collectors” in the institute's Holiday Tipping Guidelines, it says: “$10 to $30 each.” You may or may not wish to know that your pet groomer, hairdresser, mailman and UPS guy all expect a holiday tip.

71. The newspaper deliveryman put a blank card inside the envelope because ______.

A. he forgot to write a few words on it

B. he wanted the couple to send it back

C. he used it to ask for a Christmas tip

D. he was afraid of asking for a tip in person

D. didn't feel it necessary to meet Raoul when he came

73. According to the passage, the author felt ______ to give Raoul a holiday tip.

Holidays in the United States usually occur at least once a month. Most months have a national holiday that has been arranged to be celebrated on a Monday. The holidays have all been decided to be celebrated on a Monday so that the workers may have 3-day weekends---that is, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in order to rest or travel or do things with their families. Major holidays in the United States such as New Years Day or Christmas Day or the day, when we remember the first settlers of the United States, called Thanksgiving Day. These holidays most businesses close and the workers stay home and celebrate with their family.

Vacation can be from 2 weeks a year to 4 weeks a year. This usually depends on how long you’ve been working for a company, what type of position you have, whether you have a high position or a very important position and it’s difficult to find someone to replace you. In that case, you might take a few days at a time rather than taking one month all at once .Usually the more time you spend working for a company, the more time you may get for a vacation.

31. The government of the United States makes it a rule for workers

to have____ weekends.

A.1-day B. 2-day C. 3-day D. 4-day

32. Workers in the United States sometimes work from_____.

A. Monday to Saturday B. Saturday to Monday

33. Which statement is wrong according to this paragraph?

A. Only a few shops remain open on New Years Day.

Part II: Reading Comprehension (30%) ( 2 points each ) Directions: There are three passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some

questions or unfinished statement. For each of them there are four choices marked A,

B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter

on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage One

Questions 36-40 are based on the following passage.

Not long ago, a mysterious Christmas card dropped through our mail slot. The envelope was addressed to a man named Raoul, who, I was relatively certain, did not live with us. The envelope wasn‟t sealed, so I opened it. The inside of the card was blank. Ed, my husband, explained that the card was both from and to the newspaper deliveryman. His name was apparently Raoul, and Raoul wanted a holiday tip. We were meant to put a check inside the card and then drop the envelope in the mail. When your services are rendered at 4 a.m., you can‟t simply hang around, like a hotel bellboy expecting a tip.

I honestly hadn‟t realized I was supposed to. This was the first time he‟d used the card tactic. So I got out my checkbook. Somewhere along the line, holiday tipping went from an optional thank-you for a year of services to a Mafia-style protection racket (收取保护费的黑社会组织).

Several days later, I was bringing our garbage bins back from the curb when I noticed an envelope taped to one of the lids. The outside of the envelope said MICKEY. It had to be another tip request, this time from our garbage collector. Unlike Raoul, Mickey hadn‟t enclosed his own Christmas card from me. In a way, I appreciated the directness. “I know you don‟t care how merry my Christmas is, and that‟s fine,” the gesture said. “I want $30, or I‟ll „forget‟ to empty your garbage bin some hot summer day.”

I put a check in the envelope and taped it back to the bin. The next morning, Ed noticed that

the envelope was gone, though the trash hadn‟t yet been picked up: “Someone stole Mickey‟s tip!” Ed was quite certain.

“Mickey is the garbage man. I am the recycling.” Not only had Ed insulted this man by hinting that he was a garbage man, but he had obviously neglected to tip him.

Under “trash/recycling collectors” in the institute‟s Holiday Tipping Guidelines, it says, “$10 to $30 each.” You may or may not wish to know that your pet groomer, hairdresser, mailman and UPS guy all expect a holiday tip.

36. The newspaper deliveryman put a blank card inside the envelope because ________.

A. he forgot to write a few words on it

C. he used it to ask for a Christmas tip B. he wanted the couple to send it back D. he was afraid of asking for a tip in person

37. From the passage, we learn that the author _______.

A. didn‟t like Raoul‟s way of delivering the paper

B. didn‟t realize why Raoul delivered the paper that way

C. didn‟t know that Raoul came very early in the morning

D. didn‟t feel it necessary to meet Raoul when he came

38. According to the passage, the author felt _______ to give Raoul a holiday tip.

A. excited B. delighted C. embarrassed D. forced

39. Which of the following is CORRECT about Mickey, the garbage collector?

A. He wrote a letter to the couple afterwards.

B. He failed to collect the money from the bank.

C. He wanted the couple to send him a Christmas card.

D. He collected both the cheek and the garbage that day.

40. Ed‟s encounter with the recycling team shows that ______.

A. Ed was desperate to correct his mistake

B. Ed only wanted to give money to Raoul

C. Ed was unwilling to tip the truck driver

D. Ed no longer wanted to give them money

Ed, my husband, explained that the card was both from and to the newspaper deliveryman. His name was apparently Raoul, and Raoul wanted a holiday tip. We were meant to put a check inside the card and then drop the envelope in the mail. When your services are rendered at 4 a. m. , you can't simply hang around, like a hotel bellboy expecting a tip. You have to be direct.

So I wrote a nice holiday greeting to this man who, in my imagination, fires The New York Times from his hike aimed at our front door, causing more noise with mere newsprint than most people manage with sophisticated black market fireworks.

With a start, I realized that perhaps the reason for the 4 a.m. —wake-up noise was not ordinary rudeness but carefully executed spite: I had not tipped Raoul in Christmases past. I honestly hadn't realized I was supposed to. This was the first time he'd used the card tactic. So I got out my checkbook. Somewhere along the line, holiday tipping went from an optional thank-you for a year of services to a Mafia-style protection racket (收取保护费的黑社会组织)

Several days later, I was bringing our garbage bins back from the curb when I noticed an envelope taped to one of the lids. The outside of the envelope said MICKEY. It had to be another tip request, this time from our garbage collector. Unlike Raoul, Mickey hadn't enclosed his own Christmas card from me. In a way, I appreciated the directness. "I know you don't care how merry my Christmas is, and that's fine," the gesture said. "I want $ 30, or I'll 'forget' to empty your garbage bin some hot summer day."

I put a check in the envelope and taped it back to the bin. The next morning, Ed noticed that the envelope was gone, though the trash hadn't yet been picked up: "Someone stole Mickey's tip !" Ed was quite certain. He made me call the bank and cancel the check.

But Ed had been wrong. Two weeks later, Mickey left a letter from the bank on our steps. The letter informed Mickey that the check, which he had tried to cash, had been cancelled. The following Tuesday morning, when Ed saw a truck outside , he ran out with his wallet. "Are you Mickey?" The man looked at him with scorn. "Mickey is the garbageman. I am the recycling. " Not only had Ed insulted this man by hinting that he was a

garbageman, but he had obviously neglected to tip him. Ed ran back inside for more funds. Then he noticed that the driver of the truck had been watching the whole transaction. He peeled off another twenty and looked around, waving bills in the air. "Anyone else?"

Had we consulted the website of the Emily Post Institute, this

embarrassing breach of etiquette (礼节) could have been avoided. Under "trash/recycling collectors" in the institute' s Holiday Tipping

Guidelines, it says, " $10 to $ 30 each. " You may or may not wish to know that your pet groomer, hairdresser, mailman and UPS guy all expect a holiday tip.

At 18, Ashanthi DeSilva of suburban Cleveland is a living symbol of one of the great intellectual achievements of the 20th century. Born with an extremely rare and usually fatal disorder that left her without a functioning immune system (the "bubble-boy disease", named after an earlier victim who was kept alive for years in a sterile plastic tent), she was treated beginning in 1990 with a revolutionary new therapy that sought to correct the defect at its very source, in the genes of her white blood cells. It worked. Although her last gene-therapy treatment was in 1992, she is completely healthy with normal immune function, according to one of the doctors who treated her, W. French Anderson of the University of Southern California. Researchers have long dreamed of treating

diseases from hemophilia to cancer by replacing mutant genes with normal ones. And the dreaming may continue for decades more. "There will be a gene-based treatment for essentially every disease," Anderson says, "within 50 years. "

It's not entirely clear why medicine has been so slow to build on

Anderson' s early success. The National Institutes of Health budget office estimates it will spend $ 432 million on gene-therapy research in 2005, and there is no shortage of promising leads. The therapeutic genes are usually delivered through viruses that don' t cause human disease. "The virus is sort of like a Trojan horse," says Ronald Crystal of New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical College. "The cargo is the gene. " At the University of Pennsylvania's Abramson Cancer Center,

immunologist Carl June recently treated HIV pa tients with a gene intended to help their cells resist the infection. At Cornell University,

researchers are pursuing gene-based therapies for Parkinson's disease and a rare hereditary disorder that destroys children' s brain cells. At Stanford University and the Children' s Hospital of Philadelphia,

researchers are trying to figure out how to help patients with hemophilia who today must inject themselves with expensive clotting drugs for life. Animal experiments have shown great promise.

But somehow, things get lost in the translation from laboratory to patient. In human trials of the hemophilia treatment, patients show a response at first, but it fades over time. And the field has still not recovered from the setback it suffered in 1999, when Jesse Gelsinger, an 18-year-old with a rare metabolic disorder, died after receiving an experimental gene therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. Some experts worry that the field will be tarnished further if the next people to benefit are not patients but athletes seeking an edge. This summer, researchers at the Salk Institute in San Diego said they had created a "marathon mouse" by implanting a gene that enhances running ability; already, officials at the World Anti-Doping Agency are preparing to test athletes for signs of "gene doping". But the principle is the same, whether you're trying to help a healthy runner run faster or allow a

muscular-dystro-phy patient to walk. "Everybody recognizes that gene therapy is a very good idea," says Crystal. "And eventually it's going to work. "

The case of Ashanthi Desilva is mentioned in the text to

A show the promise of gene-therapy

B give an example of modem treatment for fatal diseases

C introduce the achievement of Anderson and his team

D explain how gene-based treatment works

Passage 2

The University in Transformation, edited by Australian futurists Sohail Inayatullah and Jennifer Gidley, presents some 20 highly varied outlooks on tomorrow’s universities by writers representing both Western and non-Western perspectives. Their essays raise a broad range of issues, questioning nearly every key assumption we have about higher education today.

The most widely discussed alternative to the traditional campus is the Internet University—a voluntary community to scholars/teachers physically scattered throughout a country or around the world but all linked in cyberspace.A computerized university could have many advantages, such as easy scheduling, efficient delivery of lectures to thousands or even millions of students at once, and ready access for students everywhere to the resources of all the world’s great libraries.

Yet the Internet University poses dangers, too. For example,a line of franchised courseware, produced by a few superstar teachers marketed under the brand name of a famous institution, and heavily advertised, might eventually come to dominate the global education market, warns sociology professor Peter Manicas of the University of Hawaii at Manoa.Besides enforcing a rigidly standardized curriculum, such a“college education in a box”could undersell the offerings of many traditional brick and mortar institutions, effectively driving them out of business and throwing thousands of career academics out of work, note Australian communications professors David Rooney and Greg Hearn.

On the other hand, while global connectivity seems highly likely to play some significant role in future higher education, that does not mean greater uniformity in course content—or other dangers—will necessarily follow.Counter-movements are also at work.

Many in academia, including scholars contributing to this volume, are questioning the fundamental mission of university education. What if,for instance, instead of receiving primarily technical training and building their individual careers, university students and professors could focus their learning and research efforts on existing problems in their local communities and the world? Feminist scholar Ivana Milojevic dares to dream what a university might become“if we believed that childcare workers and teachers in early childhood education should be one of the highest (rather than lowest) paid professionals?” Co-editor Jennifer Gidley shows how tomorrows university faculty, instead of giving lectures and conducting independent research, may take on three new roles. Some would act as brokers, assembling customized degree-credit programmes for individual students by mixing and matching the best course offerings available from institutions all around the world‟s second group, mentors, would function much like today’s faculty advisers, but are likely to be working with many more students outside their own academic specialty. This would require them to constantly be learning from their students as well as instructing them.

A third new role for faculty, and in Gidley’s view the most challenging and rewarding of all, would be as meaning-makers: charismatic sages and practitioners leading groups of students/colleagues in collaborative efforts to find spiritual as

Hobbies are also a way of making friends. Starting a new school term is always exciting. It is a chance to see your friends again. But most of exciting of all, the new term is a chance to take up new hobbies. It is common in Britain for students to take up new hobbies after the Christmas holidays.

Most schools offer different kinds of classes. Students take them in their free periods or after school. Some classes you have to pay for and others are free. For example, I once took a free Wednesday evening gymnastics class my school offered. But when I learned how to paly a drum my parents had to pay for the lessons.

The most popular extra classes at my school were piano lessons and drum club. Both classes offered exams students could take. Students with many hobbies sometimes felt more stressed than I haven’t continued any of the hobbies I began at school. But I have never regretted taking them. According to a survey, students’ safety has become a big problem. Nearly 50% of students say they are worried about robbery on the way to and from school. Now in main big cities in China, some schools have taught an unusual lesson: self-protection. Students like this lesson because there are no exams or boring classes. And they can learn how to save lives and know how to stop danger before it really happens.

Chen Haoyu, a teacher at Beijing No. 25 middle school, gives young students advice on how to deal with danger.

If you are robbed

Keep clam. If you can not cry for help or run away, give the robber your money. Try to remember what the robber looks like and tell the police later.

If you are in a traffic accident

If a car his you, you should remember the car number. If it is a bicycle, try to call your parents before you let the rider go. This is because you don't know how seriously you are hurt.

If it is raining hard and there is lightning Don't stay in high places and stay away from trees. When there is a fire

Get away as fast as you can. Put wet things on your body and try to find an exit. Do not take the lift.

We arrived at the hospital to find Dad was very weak, but his smile was the same as ever. It was another attack of pneumonia(肺炎). My husband and I stayed with him for the weekend but had to return to our jobs on Monday. Local relatives would help Dad get home from hospital and look after him. But I longed to be able to let him know that we cared too, even when we weren't with him.

Then I remembered a family tradition when our children were small. When living their grandparents' home after a visit, each child would write a love note to their grandparents. They hid notes in cereal(燕麦) box, under a hairbrush or next to the phone. For days, their grandparents would smile as they discovered these reminders of our love.

So as I tidied Dad's kitchen and made up a bed for him downstairs in the living room, I wrote some notes. " Dad, I put the food in the fridge so it wouldn't spoil(损坏)." Some expressed my love, " Dad, I hope you will sleep well in your new bed." Most notes were downstairs where he would stay for several weeks, but one note I hid upstairs under his pillow, " Dad, if you have found this note, you must be feeling better. We are so glad!"

Just like his medicines strengthened him physically, these "emotional vitamins" would improve his health, too. Several weeks later, in one of our regular phone calls, I asked Dad how he was going. He said," Pretty good. I just found your note under my pillow upstairs!" 63. We can infer from the text that the writer's father _____.
