Fraternities and sororities are societies among the students, for men and women respectively, each of them called by a name which consists of two or three letters of the Greek alphabet. Most of the fraternities and sororities have a mainly social purpose, and generally have their own houses within the university area. During the early part of his time at the university a student who hopes to be admitted to membership of a fraternity gets to know people in it, and as vacant places arise new students are elected to fill them. Some students who fail to be elected to fraternities are unhappy because they feel rejected when they had a great ambition to be popular and well-liked. In a large university only a minority of the students belong to fraternities and sororities. Some of those who are outside never wanted to be in, and are rather contemptuous of these bodies, whose values tend to be at variance with modern youthful disbelief in established customs and ways of behavior. Once elected, a student may live in a fraternity house and have his meals there, and the meals in many cases are conducted with some ceremony. There may be some activities and rather ill-defined false ideals (some of them very snobbish) within the fraternity which require that the members should act strictly in agreement with the fraternity's ideals and objects. The main advantage of the system is that in a big university some students feel happier if they are in a small group where they can feel that they belong. Each fraternity has a nation-wide organization.

Apart from the social fraternities there are also academic fraternities, which on the whole do not have any buildings or physical existence, but exist to arrange meetings. Pi Sigma Alpha merely stands for Political Science Association, and is joined by students who concentrate on political science. Phi Beta Kappa is the fraternity for students who have obtained very high marks during their course. Local university divisions of the Phi Beta Kappa hold banquets at which new members are admitted with the proper ceremonies and speeches made, sometimes by distinguished speakers.

In the past, many social fraternities used amazing admission ceremonies for students just elected to them. On such occasions, newly -joining members had to eat or drink impossible amounts or perform degrading, dangerous or unpleasant tasks. A few years ago there were some cases of students who became seriously ill as a result of some of the ridiculous things that they were required to do as part of their admission ceremonies, and there were other troubles arising from some of the peculiar tasks, some of which involved breaking the law. Most fraternities have become too mature for things of this type.
