Paparazzi (狗仔队) have become an important part of today’s media. If a star is aiming to have a private wedding, you can be sure there will be paparazzi there wedding (photograph) will have their cameras out and be ready to take a picture of the happy couple. Members of the paparazzi are forever looking for photographs could bring them dollars, many people dislike getting into their personal life.

While could be expected that some journalists (新闻记者) would not be in favor their behavior, most see themselves as meeting a desire from the public. This can hardly be denied as millions of magazines with photographs of celebrities (sell) every year.

The nature of the paparazzi today has unnecessarily spread. The deeper issue that needs to be considered here is there is the desire of normal individuals to get into the private lives of As long this need is in place, the paparazzi will always have an audience of paying customers. So long as the money is there, someone will be willing to get the massive payment.

You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. “They” did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering. “They” are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as “they” are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems,

thus internalizing(内化) your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.

Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are individuals who might like to control their lives, but they don’t let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don’t blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred(神圣的) moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.

Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims relish (沉溺) in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others---and even themselves---to feel like victims, too. Creators consciously choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but all around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives.

In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.

In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.

Holidays are really important. Many of us will have childhood memories of summer holidays where we were taken away from home to experience new environments and learn in different ways.

But holidays are expensive and, for those on low wages or living on benefits, they are often unobtainable. Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional costs that are difficult for many families to meet.

For working parents, the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childcare. When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks, there is a need to spread this across the year. Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday. For some, this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult.

The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced staff committed to giving our children a caring and inspiring learning environment. The number of children receiving free school meals is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start to the day. Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educational support. Schools also have an important role in safeguarding children、 welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed.

While teachers are holidaying in the UK, many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learning.

In setting out its plans for a five-term year, Nottingham City Council (委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to four and a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, each followed by a two-week break. We believe this will give real “down time" for school staff and pupils alike but will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning.

We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, this must be weighed against the benefits for city children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever help me make the big choice in life.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that was incurable, and that I would live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is my doctors’ code for preparing yourself to die.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. I was completely in despair. Later that evening, I had another examination and my wife told me that tumor turned to be curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’ m fine now.

This was the closest I’ve been to facing death. To tell the truth, no one wants to die. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. It clears out the old to make room for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.

Your time is so limited that you shouldn’t waste it repeating someone else’s life. Don’ t be trapped by dogma(教条)— which is living with the results of other people’ s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart. It somehow already knows what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

40. What does the author think of death?

A. He thinks it is impossible to avoid. B. He thinks it is not the end of life.

C. He thinks it is nothing to be scared of. D. He thinks it is the beginning of a new life.

41. In the author’s opinion, we should ______.

A. follow others’ advice B. take no notice of diseases

C. take exercise and keep healthy D. have the courage to follow our heart

42. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 mean?

A. came across B. dealt with

C. survived D. Supported

(4)注意由in summary,in a word,as a result,finally,in short,in conclusion和in brief等“信号词”引导的句子。

(1)The author writes this passage to (2)The author in this passage intends to (3)The author’s main purpose in writing this passage is to .(4)Why does the author write this passage? ▲.

A 难度值:较难 推荐度:★ ★ ★ ★ Most people think their time problems are outer, and that they are caused by the telephone, meetings, visitors, and delayed information or decisions. Although these problems often have a bad effete on them, as when people call or drop in, we usually contribute to them. In almost all cases, it is possible to influence, if not control, it usually can cause problems, such as, slowness and indecision, lack of self-discipline, the inability to delegate, or the tendency to fight fires, to act without thinking, and to jump from task to task without finishing any of them. Time is constant that cannot be changed. The clock cannot be slowed down or speeded up. Thus we cannot manage time itself. We can only manage our activities with respect to time. The same skills are needed as those used in managing others—the abilities to plan, organize, delegate, direct, and control. Time management is simply self-management. It is impossible to be effective in any position without controlling one’s time effectively. Successful time management does not mean working harder, but working smarter. When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you‟ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”

Remembering that I‟ll be dead soon is the most important tool I‟ve ever make the big choice in life.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that was incurable, and that I would live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is my doctors‟ code for preparing yourself to die.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. I was completely in despair. Later that evening, I had another examination and my wife told me that tumor turned to be curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I‟ m fine now.

This was the closest I‟ve been to facing death. To tell the truth, no one wants to die. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. It clears out the old to make room for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.

Your time is so limited that you shouldn‟t waste it repeating someone else‟s life. Don‟ t be trapped by dogma(教条)— which is living with the results of other people‟ s thinking. Don‟t let the

noise of others‟ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart. It somehow already knows what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

56. The doctor advised the author to go home and get his affairs in order because ______.

A. he had to rest at home

C. his disease was not serious at all

57. What does the author think of death?

A. He thinks it is impossible to avoid.

C. He thinks it is nothing to be scared of.

58. In the author‟s opinion, we should ______.

A. follow others‟ advice

B. take no notice of diseases D. have the courage to follow our heart B. He thinks it is not the end of life. D. He thinks it is the beginning of a new life. B. his disease couldn‟t be cured D. he had to wait for the result of the test C. take exercise and keep healthy

59. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 mean?

A. came across B. dealt with C. survived

Holidays are really important. Many of us will have childhood memories of summer holidays where we were taken away from home to experience new environments and learn in different ways.

But holidays are expensive and, for those on low wages or living on benefits, are often unobtainable.

For some this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult.

Schools also have an important role in safeguarding children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed.

While teachers are holidaying in the UK, many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their D. supported

learning.

60. A. an experienced teacher

C. an inspired student

A. environments B. a working parent D. a city council member C.holidays D. benefits 61. B. wages

62. The plans for a shorter summer holiday will help students______.

A. obtain the cheapest holidays without additional costs

B. benefit more from the caring and inspiring learning environment

C. get a chance to spend six weeks a term with teachers in school

D. have more school days to receive free school meals

63. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

A. working parents can enjoy a five-week break to care for their children

B. the suggested plans for a five-term school year can hardly be carried out

C. the long summer holiday gives teachers and students real "down time"

D. some school staff will say “ No" to the plans for a shorter summer holiday

Scientists in Mexico have just begun a new study of one of the world‟s biggest pyramids: the Pyramid of the Sun, north of Mexico City. They‟re putting lots of small, high-tech machines under the pyramid to try to unlock some of its secrets. For thousands of years, people have tried to uncover the secrets of the pyramids.

The people who built the pyramids made lots of secret doors and rooms to stop robbers from finding the treasures inside. However, there always have been some smart thieves in history. Now, almost all of Egypt‟s pyramids have been robbed, including the Great Pyramid of Khufu, which is the largest pyramid in the world. It is the only one of the ancient wonders of the world that is still standing.

In AD 820, an Arab king named Abdullah AL Manum got a group of workers to dig their way into the Great Pyramid and have a look. Inside the pyramid, they found three rooms—the Queen‟s Chamber, the Grand Gallery and the King‟s Chamber. But to their surprise, the men didn‟t find the treasures they

Everyone knows about straight-A students. We see them frequently in TV situation comedies and in movies like Revenge(复仇) of They get high grades, all right, but only by becoming dull laborers, their noses always stuck in a book. They are not good at social communication and look clumsy when it comes to sports.

How, then, do we account for Domenica Roman or Paul Melendres?

Roman is on the tennis team at Fairmont Senior High School. She also sings in the choral group, serves on the student council(学生会) and is a member of the mathematics society. For two years she has maintained A's in every subject. Melendres, now a freshman at the University of New Mexico, was student-body president at Valley High School in Albuquerque. He played soccer and basketball well, exhibited at the science fair, and meanwhile worked as a reporter on a local television station. Being a speech giver at the graduation ceremony, he achieved straight A's in his regular classes, plus bonus points for A's in two college-level courses.

How do super-achievers like Roman and Melendres do it? Brains aren't the only answer. "Top grades don't always go to the brightest students," declares Herbert Walberg, professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who has conducted major studies of super-achieving students. "Knowing how to make the most of your innate(天赋的) abilities counts for more. Much more."

In fact, Walberg says, students with high I.Q.s sometimes don't do as well as classmates with lower I.Q.s. For them, learning comes too easily and they never find out how to get down.

Hard work isn't the whole story, either. "It's not how long you sit there with the books open," said one of the many A students we interviewed. "It's what you do while you're sitting." Indeed, some of these students actually put in fewer hours of homework time than their lower-scoring classmates.

The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can readily learn.

1. The “nerds” can probably be __________.

A. dull bookworms lacking sports and social skills

B. successful top students popular with their peers

C. students with certain learning difficulties

D. born leaders crazy about social activities

2. What can we conclude from the first paragraph?

A. Most TV programs and films are about straight-A students.

B. People have unfavorable impression of straight-A students.

C. Everyone knows about straight-A students from TV or films.

D. Straight-A students are well admired by people in the society.

E. Some students become super-achievers mainly because ________.

F. they are born cleverer than others

G. they worker longer hours on study

H. they make full use of their abilities

I. they know the short cut to success

3. What will be talked about after the last paragraph?

A. The interviews with more students.

B. The role I.Q. plays in learning well.

C. The techniques to be better learners.

D. The achievements top students make.

4. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Students needn’t work hard on study any more.

B. The brightest students can never get top grades.

C. Top students certainly achieve all-around developments.

D. Students with average I.Q.s can become super-achievers.

When Frida Kahlo’s paintings were on show in London, a poet described her paintings as “ a ribbon (丝带)around a bomb”. Such comments seem to suggest Kahlo had a big influence on the art world of her time. Sadly, she is actually a much bigger name today than she was during her time.

Then, in 1925, her back was broken in several places in a school-bus accident. Throughout the rest of her life, the artist had many operations, but noting was able to cure the terrible pain in her back. However, the accident had an unexpected side effect. While lying in her bed recovering, Kahlo taught herself to paint.

In 1929, she got married to Diego Rivera, another famous Mexican artist. Rivera’s strong influences on Kahlo’s style can be seen in her early works, but her later works from the 1940s, known today as her best works, show less influence from her husband.

Unfortunately, her works did not attract much attention in the 1930s and1940s, even in her home country. Her first one-woman show in Mexico was not held until 1953.For more than a decade after her death in 1954, Kahlo’s works remained largely unnoticed by the world, but in the 1970s her works began to gain international fame at last.

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it.

In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.

The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule. that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.

The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development.

1. What'the main idea of Paragraph 1

A. People remember well what they learned in childhood. B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.

C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words." D. Stories for children are easy to remember.

2. The author explains the law of overlearning by

A. presenting research findings B. setting down general rules C. making a comparison D. using examples

3. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is

A. a result of overlearning B. a special case of cramming

C. a skill to deal with math problems D. a basic step towards advanced studies

4. What is the author's opinion on cramming?

A. It leads to failure in college exams. B. It's helpful only in a limited way.

C. It's possible to result in poor memory D. It increases students' learning interest. B

Decision-making under Stress

A new review based on a research shows that acute stress affects the way the brain considers the advantages and disadvantages, causing it to focus on pleasure and ignore the possible negative (负面的) consequences of a decision.

The research suggests that stress may change the way people make choices in predictable ways.

―Stress affects how people learn,‖ says Professor Mara Mather. ―People learn better about positive than negative outcomes under stress.‖

For example, two recent studies looked at how people learned to connect images(影像) with either rewards or punishments. In one experiment, some of the participants were first stressed by having to give a speech and do difficult math problems in

front of an audience; in the other, some were stressed by having to keep their hands in ice water. In both cases, the stressed participants remembered the rewarded material more accurately and the punished material less accurately than those who hadn’t gone through the stress.

This phenomenon is likely not surprising to anyone who has tried to resist eating cookies or smoking a cigarette while under stress –at those moments, only the pleasure associated with such activities comes to mind. But the findings further suggest that stress may bring about a double effect. Not only are rewarding experiences remembered better, but negative consequences are also easily recalled.

The research also found that stress appears to affect decision-making differently in men and women. While both men and women tend to focus on rewards and less on consequences under stress, their responses to risk turn out to be different.

Men who had been stressed by the cold-water task tended to take more risks in the experiment while women responded in the opposite way. In stressful situations in which risk-taking can pay off big, men may tend to do better, when caution weighs more, however, women will win.

This tendency to slow down and become more cautious when decisions are risky might also help explain why women are less likely to become addicted than men: they may more often avoid making the risky choices that eventually harden into addiction.

5. We can learn from the passage that people under pressure tend to ______.

A. keep rewards better in their memory B. recall consequences more effortlessly C. make risky decisions more frequently D. learn a subject more effectively

6. According to the research, stress affects people most probably in their ______.

A. ways of making choices C. tolerance of punishments B. preference for pleasure D. responses to suggestions

7. The research has proved that in a stressful situation, ______.

A. women find it easier to fall into certain habits B. men have a greater tendency to slow down C. women focus more on outcomes D. men are more likely to take risks

Holidays are really important. Many of us will have childhood memories of summer holidays where we were taken away from home to experience new environments and learn in different ways.

But holidays are expensive and, for those on low wages or living on benefits, are often unobtainable.

Schools also have an important role in safeguarding children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed.

While teachers are holidaying in the UK, many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learning.

In setting out its plans for a five-term year, Nottingham City Council (委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down lo four and a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, each followed by a two-week break. We believe this will give real ―down time" for school staff and pupils alike but will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning.

We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, this must be weighed against the benefits for city children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.

8. A. an experienced teacher

C. an inspired student B. a working parent D. a city council member

9. The underlined word "they" in the second paragraph refers to ―‖.

A. environments B. holidays C. wages D. benefits

. 10. .A. 2 weeks B. 4.5 weeks C. 5 weeks D. 6 weeks

A. obtain the cheapest holidays without additional costs

B. get a chance to spend six weeks a term with teachers in school

C. benefit more from the caring and inspiring learning environment

D. have more school days to receive free school meals

12. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

A. working parents can enjoy a five-week break to care for their children

B. the suggested plans for a five-term school year can hardly be carried out

C. the long summer holiday gives teachers and students real "down time"

D. some school staff will say ― No" to the plans for a shorter summer holiday

For those who make journeys across the world, the speed of travel today has turned the countries into a series of villages. Distances between them appear no greater to a modern traveler than those which once faced men as they walked from village to village. Jet planes fly people from one end of the earth to the other, allowing them a freedom of movement undreamt of a hundred years ago.

Yet some people wonder if the revolution in travel has gone too far. A price has been paid, they say, for the conquest (征服) of time and distance. The boat offers leisure and time enough to appreciate the ever-changing sights and sounds of a journey. A journey by train also has a special charm about it. Lakes and forests and wild, open plains sweeping past your carriage window create a grand view in which time and distance mean nothing. On board a plane, however, there is just the blank blue of the sky filling the narrow windows of the airplane. The soft lighting,

in-flight films and gentle music make up the only world you know, and the hours progress slowly.

Then there is the time spent being―processed‖ at a modem airport. People are conveyed like robots along walkways; baggage is weighed, tickets produced, examined and produced yet again before the passengers move to another waiting area. Journeys by rail and sea take longer, yes, but the hours devoted to being ― processed‖ at departure and arrival in airports are luckily absent. No wonder, then, that the modern high-speed trains are winning back passengers from the airlines.

Man, however, is now a world traveler and cannot turn his back on the airplane. The working lives of too many people depend upon it; whole new industries have been built around its design and operation. The holiday-maker, too, with limited time to spend, patiently endures the busy airports and the limited space of the flight to gain those extra hours and even days, relaxing in the sun. Speed controls people's lives; time saved, in work or play, is the important thing — or so we are told. Perhaps those first horsemen, riding free across the wild, open plains, were enjoying a better world than the one we know today. They could travel at will, and the clock was not their master.

13. What does the writer try to express in Paragraph 1?

A. Travel by plane has speeded up the growth of villages.

B. The speed of modern travel has made distances relatively short,

C. The freedom of movement has helped people realize their dreams.

D. Man has been fond of traveling rather than staying in one place.

14. How does the writer support the underlined statement in Paragraph 2?

A. By giving instructions. B. By analyzing cause and effect.

C. By following the order of time. D. By giving examples.

15. According to Paragraph 3, passengers are turning back to modem high-speed trains because_______.

A. they pay less for the tickets B. they feel safer during the travel

C. they ran enjoy higher speed of travel D. they don’t have to waste time being ―processed‖

16. What does the last sentence of the passage mean?

A. They enjoy free and relaxing travel. B. They needed the clock to tell the time.

C. They preferred traveling on horseback. D. They could travel with their master.

17. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Air travel benefits people and industries. B. Train travel has some advantages over air travel.

C. Great changes have taken place in modern travel. D.

―Tear them apart!‖ ―Kill the fool!‖ ―Murder the referee(裁判)!‖

These are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to violence. Volumes have been written about the way words affect us. It has been shown that words having certain connotations(含义)may cause us to react in The high speed of air travel is gained at a cost.

ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual humanistic behavior. I see the term ―opponent‖ as one of those words. The dictionary meaning of ―opponent ‖ is ―enemy‖ or ―one who opposes your interests.‖ Thus, when a player meets an

opponent, he or she may tend to treat that opponent as an enemy. At such times, winning may control one’s brains.

I recall an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player’s request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player started to rub his gloves across his wet T-shirt and then shouted. ―Are they wet enough now?‖

In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the consequences that such a move might have on anyone in their way. I have also witnessed a player hitting his opponent with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play. Off the court, they are good friends. It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which differs from normal behavior.

Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated (提升) the game to a higher level. Replacing the term ―opponent‖ with ―associate‖ could be an ideal way to start.

The dictionary meaning of the term ―associate‖ is ―colleague‖; ―friend‖; ―companion.‖

You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the term ―associate‖ rather than ―opponent.‖

A. Reflect a moment!

B. Does that make any sense?

C. But let’s not kid ourselves.

D. Such rude comments express one’s strong desire to win.

E. Perhaps the time has come to delete it from sports terms.

F. Players sometimes turn to violence hoping to injured opponents.

G. And every action, no matter how rude, may be considered acceptable.

③Thousands of people living in the Chinese capital will celebrate the start of the Chinese New Year by heading for the ski resorts(滑雪场).Never mind that Beijing’s dry weather seldom produces now. It is cold enough in winter for snow-making machines to make a covering for the hills north to the capital. And the rapid growth of a pleasure-seeking middle class has formed the basis for this New craze(热潮).

Since Beijing’s first ski resort was opened ten years ago, the sport has enjoyed an astonishing increase. There are now more than a dozen resorts. Clothes markets in the city have added bright colored ski suits to their winter collections. Mr.Wei, a manager of a newly-opened ski resort in Beijing, sees the growth of an industry that could soon lead Chinese to head for the ski resorts of Europe. In recent years ski resorts offering natural snow have opened in China. But many are in faraway areas of the country and can’t really match the equipment and services of some ski resorts in Europe.

Beijing’s skiing craze is partly a result of the recent increase in private cars. This has led to the growth of a leisure industry in the capital’s suburbs, which

until the late-1990s were unreachable to ordinary people. According to Mr. Wei, About 40% of the visitors to his resort some in their own cars. The rest are bused in by schools, businesses or government offices.

The problem is making money. Starting ski resort requires quite a lot of money: hiring land from the local government, preparing the hills, buying snow machines ,making sure there are enough water and electricity to run them, and buying ski equipment for hiring out to customers. The ski resort where Mr.Wei works cost nearly $4m to set up. And, as so often in China when someone comes up with a good idea, many others rush in and price wars break out. Beijing now offers some of the cheapest ski training classes in the world, though with most people rather new to the sport, expecting a few more doing the same job.

50.What does this text mainly talk about?

A.Convenience for skiers brought about by private cars

B.Skiing as a new way of enjoying one’s spare time

C.Things to be considered when starting a ski resort

D.A sudden increase of ski training classes in Beijing

51.Why are some Chinese likely to go skiing in Europe?

A.To visit more ski areas

B.To ski on natural snow

C.For a large collection of ski suits

D.For better services and equipment

52.The underlined words ”leisure industry” in Paragraph 3 refer to

A.transport to ski resorts

B.production of family cars

C.business of providing spare time enjoyments

D.part-time work for people living in the suburbs

53.What is the main problem in running a ski resort?

A.Difficulty in hiring land

B.Lack of business experience

C. prices wars with other ski resorts.

In today's throwaway society, dealing with the city's growing mountain of waste is an increasing challenge for the city council(市议会).

Recently, Edinburgh is faced with the problem of disposing of(处理)about 250,000 million tons of waste a year. Despite different ways to dispose of much of it in a green manner—largely through encouraging recycling—its aging facilities such as the Powderhall landfill do not have the ability to deal with it.

The European Union(EU) has issued a new policy, regulating how such mountains of waste are to be disposed of.The five councils (Edinburgh,East Lothian, West Lothian,Midlothian and Borders) face fines around £18 million a year from 2013 if they don't increase recycling levels and rely less on landfill. With this in mind, the councils got together with the idea of building a large incinerator plant (垃圾焚烧厂)to burn half of the waste produced in their districts. But this plan fell apart after the change of target levels by a new UK government waste policy which required that no more than 25% of the city's waste should be disposed of in this way by 2025.

After the plan was abandoned,a private company which already transported millions of tons of the city's waste by train to a landfill site near Dunbar, offered an alternative solution when it suggested opening a huge waste site near Portobello.

Since Powderhall is supposed to close in 2015,it seemed necessary for the members of the Edinburgh Council to accept the suggestion. But soon they turned it down—after 700 local objections reached them—because it would have meant hundreds of lorries a day making loud noise through heavily populated areas.

That still leaves the council with a problem.By 2013,only 50% of 1995 levels of waste will be allowed to be sent to landfill.Even if recycling targets are met, there will still be a large amount of rubbish to be burnt up.Due to this,Edinburgh and Midlothian councils have now decided to work together to build an incinerator plant as time to find a solution is fast running out.

9.The main way of handling waste in a green manner in Edinburgh is ________.

A.recycling

C.burying B.restoring D.burning

答案:A。

10.The five councils worked out a plan to build an incinerator plant to ________.

A.reduce the cost of burying waste B.meet the EU requirements

C.speed up waste recycling D.replace landfill sites

在第三个段落的开头提到了“The EU has issued a new policy...”

11.The city council of Edinburgh rejected the suggestion to open a huge landfill site near Portobello because ________.

A.it came from a private company

C.it was not supported by EU B.the council was not interested in it D.the local people were against it 答案:D。

12.What is the final decision of Edinburgh and Midlothian councils?

A.To open a new landfill nearby.

B.To close the Powderhall landfill in 2015.

C.To set up a plant for burning waste.

D.To persuade people to reduce their waste.

Skeptics are a strange lot. Some of them refuse to admit the serious threat of human activities to the enviroment, and they are tired of people who disagree with them. Those people, say skeptics, spread nothing but bad news about the environment. The “ecoguilt”brought on by the discouraging news about our planet gives rise to the popularity of skeptics as people search for more comforting worldviews.

Perhaps that explains why a new book by Bjorn Lomborg received so much publicity. That book ,The Skeptical Environmentalist, declares that it measures the “real state of the world”as fine. Of course ,another explanation is the deep pockets of some big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr. Lomborg's views are similar to those of some industryfunded organizations, which start huge activities through the media to confuse the public about issues like global warming.

So it was strange to see Mr. Lomborg's book go largely unchallenged in the media though his beliefs were contrary to most scientific opinions. One national newspaper in Canada ran a number of articles and reviews full of words of praise, even with the conclusion that “After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to die down.”
