The Board Meeting had come to an end. Bob starred to standup and jostled the table, spilling his coffee over his notes. "Howembarrassing. I am getting so clumsy in my old age."

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horseranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.

黎明前的北京

前后加起来，我在北京已经住了四十多年，算是一个老北京了。北京的名胜古迹，北京的妙处， 我应该说是了解的；其他老北京当然也了解，但是有一点，我相信绝大多数的老北京并不了解，这就是黎明时分以前的北京。

多少年来，我养成了一个习惯：每天早晨四点在黎明以前起床工作。我不出去跑步或散步，而是一下床就干活儿，因此我对黎明前的北京的了解是在屋子里感觉到的。我从前在什么报上读过一篇文章，讲黎明时分天安门广场上的清洁工人。那情景必然是非常动人的，可惜我从未能见到，只是心向往之而已。

四十年前，我住在城里在明朝曾经是特务机关的东厂里面。几座深深的大院子，在最里面三个院子里只住着我一个人，朋友们都说这地方阴森可怕，晚上很少有人敢来找我，我则恰然自得。每当夏夜，我起床以后，立刻就闻到院于里那些高大的马缨花树散发出来的阵阵幽香，这些香气破窗而入，我于此时神清气爽，乐不可支，连手中那一支笨拙的笔也仿佛生了花。

几年以后，我搬到西郊来往，照例四点起床，坐在窗前工作。白天透过窗子能够看到北京展览馆那金光闪闪的高塔的尖顶，此时当然看不到了。但是，我知道，即使我看不见它，它仍然在那里挺然耸人天空，仿佛想带给人以希望，以上进的劲头。我仍然是乐不可支，心也仿佛飞上了高空。

Predawn Beijing

I've been in Beijing altogether for over 40 years. So I can well call myself a long-timer of Beijing. Like all other long-timers of the city, I'm supposed to be very familiar with its scenic spots and historical sites, nay, its superb attractions. But I believe there is one thing lying unknown to most of the long-time residents - the predawn hours of Beijing.

For many years, I have been in the habit of get- ting up before daybreak to start work at four. Instead of going out for a jog or walk, I' 11 set about my work as soon as I'm out of bed. As a result, it is from inside my study that I've got the feel of predawn Beijing. Years ago, I hit upon a newspaper article about street cleaners in Tiananmen Square at daybreak. I

t must have been a very moving scene, but what a pity I haven’t seen it with my own eyes. I can only picture it in my mind longingly.

Forty years ago, I lived downtown in Dongchang, a compound which had housed the secret service of the Ming Dynasty. There were inside it several deep spacious courtyards one leading into another. I was the sole dweller of the three innermost courtyards. My friends, calling this place too ghastly, seldom dared to come to see me in the evening whereas I myself found it quite agreeable. In summer, the moment I got out of bed before daybreak, I would smell the delicate fragrance of the giant silk trees coming from outside my window. Thereupon, I would feel refreshed and joyful, and the clumsy pen in my hand would seem to have become as agile as it could.

Several years later when I moved to the western suburbs, I kept my habit of rising at four to begin work at the window. The glittering spire atop the tower of the Beijing Exhibition Center, which I could see in the daytime through my window, would no longer be visible now in the early morning haze. Nevertheless I knew that, though invisible, it remained there intact, towering to the skies to inspire people with hope and the urge for moving ahead. At this, I would be beside myself with joy and feel as if my heart were also flying high up into the skies.

Ten years after, I moved again. In the new home of mine, I had no silk trees, nor could I get sight of the glittering spire from afar. There was, however, a lotus pond of limpid blue in front of my door. In the first few years after I moved there, lotus flowers continued to blossom on the surface of the pond. In the summer- time, when day broke early at four, a vast stretch of lotus leaves looking skywards outside my window came dimly into sight while the quiet fragrance of the lotus flowers assailed my nose. All that delighted me even more than the silk trees and the glittering spire.

Is it exclusively due to the above-mentioned that I've developed a liking for predawn Beijing? No. For 30 years, I've been bogged down in the mire of meetings. To tell you the truth, with the experience accumulated over the 30 years, I'm now scared of meetings. In the daytime, there is no telling when I may be served a notice for attending a meeting. To exaggerate it a bit, that keeps me in constant suspense and makes me fidgety. Even when no meeting is to take place, I feel restless all the same. However, my experience tells that it is only during the predawn hours that I can be truly havened from any involvement in meetings. As soon as I sit down at my desk before dawn, something similar to the conditioned reflex begins to function within me. Instantly I' 11 pick up my pen to play my proper part with perfect peace of mind. Then inspiration comes gushing to my mind and my memory be- comes as quick as a newly-sharpened knife. I’ll feel overjoyed, almost to the point of waving my arms and stamping my feet.

In short, I love Beijing, especially predawn Beijing.

飘忽的浮云

I’ve opened the curtain of my east window here above the computer, and I sit now in a holy theater before a sky-blue stage. A little cloud above the neighbor s trees resembles Jimmy Durante s nose for a while, then becomes amorphous as it slips on north. Other clouds follow, big and little and tiny on their march toward whiteness. Wisps of them lead or droop because there must always be leading and drooping.

The trees seem to laugh at the clouds while yet reaching for them with swaying branches. Trees must think that they are real, rooted, somebody, and that perhaps the clouds are only tickled water which sometimes blocks their sun. But trees are clouds, too, of green leaves clouds that only move a little. Trees grow and change and dissipate like their airborne cousins.

阅读指导——如何给文章批注

读书其实就是读自己，读出自己对文章的理解和感受。给文章做批注是一种好的读书方法。如何给文章批注呢？我结合一些文章具体说说。

每次读一篇文章，我就习惯于让学生这样做：第一：快速浏览文章，划出不懂的地方，圈出难理解的词语；第二：查字典，弄明白字词的准确读音和含义；翻阅相关的资料，读懂难句子的含义。阅读如果就停留在这个层面，那意义不大。我们必须学会品读文章，透过文字与作者进行情感和心灵的交流。那么就是第三：找到自己喜欢的地方，并在文本上写上自己喜欢的理由。找到自己喜欢的地方，这很容易，但要说出喜欢的理由，学生就感到有难度。刚一开始，他们都不知道从何下手。

怎样评价文章好的地方，说出自己喜欢的理由，给文章做批注呢？可以从以下几个方面去做：

一、找到关键词语。如《五彩池》中的“没想到今年夏天去四川松潘旅游，在藏龙山上，我真的看到了像瑶池那样神奇的五彩池。”（我喜欢“没想到和真的”这两个词语，它们写出了自己看到五彩池惊喜的心情。）

又如《跳水》中的“等孩子一浮上来，水手们就立刻抓住了他，把他救上了甲板。”（我喜欢关联词“一„„就„„”，它写出了水手们救人时急切的心情和快速的动作。）

二、运用了修辞手法的句子。如《五彩池》中的“池边是金黄色的石粉凝成的，像一圈圈彩带，把大大小小的水池围成各种不同的形状，有像葫芦的，有像镰刀的，有像盘子的，有像莲花的„„”（ 我喜欢这句话是因为它使用了比喻的修辞手法，把水池比作彩带，颜色特别好看；把水池比作镰刀、盘子、莲花和葫芦，形状千奇百怪。它这样一比喻，我读着就有一种身临其境的感觉。）

明明是清水，为什么在水池里会显出不同的颜色来呢？原来池底长着许多石笋，有的像起伏的丘陵，有的像险峻的山峰，有的像矗立的宝塔，有的像成簇的珊瑚。石笋表面凝结着一层细腻的透明的石粉。阳光透过池射到池底，石笋就像高低不平的折光镜，把阳光折射成各种不同的色彩。水池周围的树木花草长得很茂盛，五光十色的倒影使池水更加瑰丽。（这里运用了设问的修辞手法，一问一答，让我明白了五彩池这么美丽的缘由。）

三、标点符号的运用。

如《五彩池》中的“池边是金黄色的石粉凝成的，像一圈圈彩带，把大大小小的水池围成各种不同的形状，有像葫芦的，有像镰刀的，有像盘子的，有像莲花的„„” （省略号写出五彩池的形状不仅仅是作者描述的这几个，还有很多，让我对五彩池的美丽产生更多的遐想。）

又如《少了一个马掌钉》中的“他在空中挥舞宝剑，‘马！’他喊道，‘一匹马，我的国家倾覆就因为这一匹马。’”（第一个马字后面的感叹号表达了国王的着急，第二字马字后面的逗号表达国王的沮丧，第三个马字的句号就意味着国家就因为一匹少了小小的马掌钉的马而被颠覆了，太可惜了。）

四、人物语言动作心理活动的精彩。

如《跳水》中的“猴子还不时回过头来逗孩子生气。爬到了桅杆的顶端，它用后脚钩住绳子，把帽子挂在最高的那根横木的一头，然后坐在桅杆的顶端，扭着身子，龇（zī）牙咧（liě）嘴做着怪样。”（爬到、钩住、挂、坐、扭和做等几个动词就写出了猴子的调皮捣蛋。） 在雨果的《“诺曼底”号遇难记》中有这样一段对话——

“洛克机械师在哪儿？”

“船长叫我吗？”

五、文章的空白之处作批注。《穷人》最后似乎没有结尾。（桑娜和渔夫的领养了西蒙的孩子，以后他们生活会怎么样呢？我有些担心。我喜欢这样的结尾。）

六、疑惑之处作批注。

如《五彩池》中的“池里的水好看极了，有五种颜色，红的，黄的，绿的，蓝的，紫的。”（这里红的、黄的、绿的、蓝的之间为什么不用顿号，而用逗号呢？是为了表达池水好看吗？） 又如《“诺曼底”号遇难记》中的“哈尔威船长，他屹立在舰桥上，一个手势也没有做，一句话也没有说，犹如铁铸，纹丝不动，随着轮船一起沉入了深渊。人们透过阴惨惨的薄雾，凝视着这尊黑色的雕像徐徐沉进大海。”（船长为什么随着轮船沉入海底？人们就这么凝视着他这样沉进大海？见死不救？我不明白。）

阅读最重要的就是读出自己独特的体验，同样一句话，一个词语，每个人的理解就不一样；同样的文字，同样的人，不同的心境不同的时间，感受也有变化。给文章批注，就是记录当时自己读书体会。习惯养成之后，读书理解能力会增强，读书兴趣就越浓，读书就成为一种有思考的行为了。
