6、肯德基的服务人员稍多,每离开一桌便有人来收拾打理; 麦当劳的服务还行,只是收桌速度太慢,有时二楼就没有服务员。

1.麦当劳的食品是现点现做(MFY--Made For You--为你而做),保证产品的绝对新鲜,当然会有某些产品需要等待;肯德基的食品是由“品管”(产品制作人,在麦当劳里面称为“汇集员”)事先做好一定数量的成品放在一个很大,透明的保温柜里面,顾客可以看着这些产品然后进行点膳,这样可以避免顾客等待,但是食品的新鲜度不如麦当劳;

2.麦当劳会建议顾客购买套餐,实际上麦当劳的套餐确实比单点要划算,至少节省5元,但是却因此经常遭到某些顾客怀疑,认为员工死命跟他建议套餐是在宰他;肯德基建议点膳方面没有麦当劳执着,因为肯德基的套餐价格跟单点价格之间差价不大,所以在肯德基点餐时,不会因为员工的建议点膳而遭到非议;

3.麦当劳购买套餐后通常会是大可乐+大薯条,其实大份超值套餐比中份超值套餐划算,只贵1~2元钱,但是分量将近是原来的一倍,习惯食用大份套餐的顾客也许没什么意见,但是对于有些顾客,他们不喜欢员工擅自把中份可乐和薯条加成大份,即使只要1~2元,但是顾客对自己所购买餐点有知情权,所以往往因为加大码引发矛盾;肯德基的套餐不存在加大码这点,薯条只能是中份,饮料是中份(特饮补齐差价);

4.调味包的发放,在麦当劳点膳时可以经常听到或看到有些顾客会找柜台员工要番茄酱或者其他调味包以及纸巾,一般情况下员工都会按照顾客的意思给于他所需要的东西,但是有时候顾客想多要两包番茄酱,员工通常只会给一包,然后跟顾客说,请先食用,不够再来拿,好吗?有的顾客欣然接受,有的顾客就会大发雷霆,多给一包不行么?等会再来拿多麻烦啊。其实麦当劳酱包的发放原则是,无论大中小包薯条,标准只配一包番茄酱,不够时可以来柜台要;肯德基也许也有发放原则,但是基本上当顾客不是特别无理要求,比如给我10包番茄酱,员工都会按照顾客的意思给于;

5.最大最重要的不同点-----食品安全问题:

麦当劳的点善员只负责点膳,一般情况下是不会加入备膳中,因为有专门的人来为顾客备膳,这样避免点膳员接触过钱的手再直接接触食品,造成食品安全问题!!!而且有专门人员为顾客备膳的情况下,点膳员是在不停接待下一位顾客,柜台前的顾客是在不断移动,这样不会让顾客久等~

肯德基的点膳员在为顾客点膳完成之后不是直接收钱,而是去备产品,当产品备齐以后再收钱,此时虽然

你看到的是先拿产品再收钱,但是在你点膳之前,也就是前一位顾客点膳完成之后,这位员工可否有过洗手动作?那么就是接触过钱的手直接去拿产品,此时食品安全问题很明显的暴露出来~

There are some interesting differences between McDonald’s and KFC. The key difference between them is their main products, the McDonald’s insist on hamburger and beef as their main productions and always try to keep product standardization, on the other hand, the KFC’s staple is fried chicken and trend to localization. Another interesting difference is their different brand images: McDonald’s more tends to Global management adjustments while KFC holds that “Do in Rome as Rome does.” Moreover, the market positioning between them is also difference. McDonald’s set their market positioning mainly on our young people include children and hammer at a brisk atmosphere, however, KFC pursues the idea of the consumption of the family members so that the atmosphere in there is cozy just like in our own house.

Abstract: the paper is to show the difference between American and English in several aspects, such as geographical location, cultural environment and the most important part, the language.

1. Geographical Location

The geographic location of the United Kingdom and the United States are different, one in European continent, one continent of the America. The United Kingdom, after a long period of development, has been very wealthy, so they are decent and conservative. But at the beginning of the United States, the United States is in a completely unfamiliar and barren continent, the first settlers were called pioneers, so they have to have the courage to take risks. If they do not have the spirit of adventure, they will not be able to survive, not to mention development, the hard environment eventually made the American spirit. In addition, the difference of European culture and American cultural contributes to the difference of the two countries. English suffers from the influence from other European countries, like France, Germany, but American was influenced by the culture of the other countries in American continent as well as the native Indian.

2. Culture Environment

Britain is a traditional European country with long historical tradition continuity, and there had been a hierarchy in British society for a long time. And in UK there always has been a monarchy. So, the British likes to remember past times and old acquaintances, tends to be conservative, and behaves like a gentleman. All these need culture accumulation, and these character and qualities can’t be made if the country is without a long history. However, the U.S. is precisely without a very profound historical accumulation and is a young country. So, the Americans dare to innovate and stress emphasis on personal value. On the other hand, in the United States, there are not a lot of constrains. They feel free to make bold innovations.

In addition, there is a great difference in the population composition of the two countries. The United States is a nation of immigrants, people comes from all

countries and regions in the world. So, the culture of the United States shows different characteristics. People in American can accept and absorb all the culture factors all over the world. U.S. attitude toward foreign cultures is an open. However, comparing to the United States, the structure of the UK population appears to be simplex.

3. Language

Although, American and England are all English speaking countries, they all have its own kind of English after a long time, and we call them British English and American English.

3.1 Pronunciation

British English is conservative and rigorous. In many cases, there is no

correspondence between the pronunciation and spelling, and British are willing to

follow the rule in this way to show their kind of recognition and respect for their language. However, Americans have another concept. They do everything under the precondition of convenience, and they tend to follow the regular pronunciation rather than irregular pronunciation in British English. Americans change the irregular pronunciations in British English into regular ones.

For example: in English, the word forehead pronounces [fo: rid], but in American,

[fo: rhed]. The word medicine, British read it [medsin], the letter i is not pronounced, and American English read [medisin]. Even some regular pronounced words also change, because of the Americans undisciplined, lazy style.

3.2 spelling

The way of spelling in American English is more concise and practical than that in British English, they would ignore the letter in writing if the letter was not

pronounced, which makes words short and easy to spell.

Take an example, if the letter L ending in a word was not unstressed syllable, American people seldom end the word with double L, such as councillor, American will spell councilor instead, and traveler instead of traverller, and so on. Some words in American English end with –ter, such as center-centre, meter-metre. In British English words end with –our are changed into –or in American English, like labour-labor, honour-honor, colour-color.

3.3 Vocabulary

The differences between British English and American English also exist in their vocabulary, such as, the Americans used the apartment, and the British flat,

Americans say the first floor, and the British the ground floor; public school in British English means private school which kids come from affluent families can afford, but the public schools in American English is a school run by government. Eating the dessert after dinner in American English means all kinds of food, but only fruit in British English. The trouser in American English is pants, whereas, pants means underwear in British English. The word check in American English is bank note in British English.

4. Table Manner

At table, the British people pays special attention to table manners, such as, they shouldn’t talk at table, shouldn’t beat tableware as well. They have a strict

requirement on how to use knives and forks. While Americans on the relatively few occasions will do so, they like fast and convenient food, they do not require delicate or luxury dinner but they pay more attention to popular food. American favorite food is known as KFC, McDonald's and pizza hut, the junk food. This diet keeps the American obesity rate high. But from the diet habits, it is not difficult for us to find that the American do everything vigorously and resolutely and do not stick to the trifles.

5. Education

From the educational philosophy of the education system in the United States, there are the characteristics of diversity and openness, international and flexibility, which

enable the U.S. Department of Education to ensure educational equity and equality of opportunity to receive education, and take full advantage of the strengths of

educational objects, so education is the dynamic, vibrant in American. It also reflects what the Americans have been in pursuit, the freedom and equality.

British education has a rigorous style of study and impeccable the education system. The UK has a strict quality control system, the teaching quality evaluation and the research Assessment from all the school in England are announced to the world, higher education institutions in the UK will be checked in a regular routine. This

rigorous attitude is also reflected in the assessment of the student. Many students can’t get a degree if they fail in passing the assessment. Ethics and professionalism of English teachers ensure the quality of its education. British education also reflects British conservative and rigorous character.

6. Summery

In conclusion, we can see that the British are sensitive, restrained, conservative, they tend to be rational rigorous and gentlemanly. By comparison, Americans are

warm and cheerful, bold and frank. They are with a spirit of adventure and innovation.

A survey of 31 first year XJTLU students was conducted to find out their opinions of KFC and McDonald. 17 questions were contained in the questionnaire. The result in the survey shows that every single student has their own favor in KFC or McDonald. In the analysis of data, McDonald is good at French fried and ice cream while KFC does well in fried chicken and drinks. These results could be used to improve themselves and go further in China.

Fast food plays an important role in people's daily lives. It is very convenient to satisfy the persons who live in a fast-paced way of life. Also, Children were influenced by the new culture from these restaurants who accompanied with youth to go through their childhood. With the development of economy, western fast food has become popular in China. This report will present a

general idea for people who do not know where to go for western fast food.

McDonald and KFC are the most popular western fast food restaurants in China. In 1987, the first KFC restaurant was set up in Beijing, since then, KFC

developed fast in China and now there are more than 3000 KFC restaurants in China. The history of McDonald's development is quite similar. The first

McDonald restaurant opened in Shenzhen in 1990 and after rapid development, there are now about 1200 McDonald restaurant in China.

Compared KFC with McDonald, McDonald sales Coca Cola, but KFC is Pepsi . McDonald works for 24 hours differently from KFC. However KFC have family pail take-away. McDonald take many strategies like sale promotion to attract consumers. There are obvious disparity of these two restaurants.

McDonald and KFC are competitors in almost all markets, so it is in China. This report is about survey conducted on McDonald. In the market of China, as it has mentioned that KFC has more restaurants than McDonald, so this report will study the data of the survey to find out the answer about the phenomenon and the advantages and disadvantages of the two restaurants.

Methodology: (written by Allen.C Xing.Chen)

Sample: There were totally 31 students who are studying in XJTLU as Year-one persons taken part in the survey. 21 of them are males and 10 of them are females. 15 informants were from engineering program, the same number of respondents was business program students and only one person learned science. The sample were questioned all Chinese, but coming from various parts of provinces.

Materials: The object of this survey was about KFC and McDonald. The main method for the study is questionnaire because questionnaire was proved to be an effective and positive way to complete this kind of survey. The questionnaire

included 15 questions divided into three parts. Different types of questions, such as demographic, multiple choice, Liker-scale and open question made up the positive questionnaire which used to collect students’ perceptions about KFC and McDonald. (the questionnaire in appendix).

Procedure: Before the survey was conducted officially, there was a pilot survey in EAP class. It was necessary to pilot the survey in order to check the questions and classmates had also pointed out some shortcomings of the questionnaire. After that, questions were changed to be better and more suitable to answer. When it was conducted officially, each member of the group were arranged to go to different classes or halls, which were full of freshmen belonging to different classes. And then, each member had to invite about 5 or 6 persons to answer the questions as respondents. After the survey was finished, all members of the group got together, combining the answers, and using computers to handle the data. Descriptive statistics, such as personal information and number of concepts, are included in the data analysis. The statistics are also showed by chart. During the procedure, computers and a printer were used to make questionnaires. What’s more, pencils and table sheets were also used to record the answers from the freshmen.

Date handing: After the interview, members gathered tighter and handled the data. Each group member spoke out the respondent’s answer from the first to the last question one by one member recorded the data and then calculated the number respondent’ choice of the question. Then the group handled the recorded data using Microsoft Office Excel to calculate the percent and draw the graph.

It is known that the price of fast food restaurants is more expensive than many

other ordinary restaurants in China, so at the preceding part of the questionnaire, a question was set to find out respondents’ economic situation.

In general, the money a student spend a month

This pie chart shows the economic situation of the respondents. The respondents who spend 1000~1500 RMB are most. This means the students in XJTLU have no economic problem to eat in the western fast food restaurants. The frequency they go to the fast food restaurants can be showed in the following bar chart.

The frequency students eat in McDonald and KFC

Most respondents eat in these restaurants several times a month. This is reasonable because students usually eat in the canteen. However the chart shows that there is also difference between the frequency of eating in the two restaurants.

In order to find out the reason of difference, there are several questions about both the McDonald and KFC. First is about the taste of different kinds of food in the two restaurants. More respondents think the French fries and ice cream are more delicious in McDonald and more respondents think the fried chicken and drinks are more delicious in KFC. Therefore McDonald and KFC need to improve the taste of their own drawbacks. The service of a restaurant is not only just the taste of food but also the efficiency, the environment, the atmosphere and other aspects. However, most respondents think the aspect they like best is the taste of the two restaurants, and the efficiency (the quickness of preparing the food, etc) and the environment (hygiene, etc) are also the important aspects, so these aspects McDonald and KFC also need to pay attention to.

The price of a restaurant can not be ignored. According to the survey, almost half of the respondents think McDonald’s price is more reasonable. This is a

Abstract

This report is primarily written for a comparison of the development of different market situations between KFC and McDonald's in China, because of KFC and McDonald's are extremely popular in mainland China, almost everyone knows these particular brands. The development of two food companies are apparently perfect, they really have their own problems, so I write this report in order to analyse and study the two Western-style fast food issues. Then finally try to use some marketing principles and reference data to analyse current issues.

1. Introduction: The historical development of KFC and McDonald’s in China

The KFC’s developmental history KFC entered with a long diet culture capital of Beijing, which began the developmental history in the largest population in the world. On 12th November, 1987, China's first KFC restaurant was founded in Beijing. From this point onwards, the KFC chain started to learn about Chinese society and market, researched the management model for Chinese characteristics. In 1992, the restaurants increased in amount to 10. Up to 1995, the amount increased to 71. On 26th June of 1996, the 100th store was founded in Beijing. This was a milestone in China; to show that KFC had gotten to a steady developmental stage. Meanwhile the image has been formed within all levels of Chinese consumers. In 1999, according to the survey of the global famous company---AC Nielsen in China’s 30 cities to demonstrate that the earliest western fast-food - KFC, due to its unique cuisine and quality, which were recognized as "The brand of customers are often patronage‖ , and listed in the first position of China’s top ten international famous brand.

The McDonald’s developmental history In 1990, the first McDonald's restaurant which was established in China, Shenzhen, on the day of opening countless people went there in order to share the joy. Afterwards, on April of 1992, the restaurant in Wang Fu Jing Avenue of Peking was opened the maximum area in the world, the day of the transaction person- times were more than millions. Since 1992, the McDonald's developed in China rapidly. In February of 1993, the first McDonald's restaurant was set up in Guangdong international mansion, the transaction of person-time broke the record of global for McDonald’s. In June of 1994, the first McDonald's restaurant where was opened in Tianjin; In July 1994, Shanghai launched its first McDonald's restaurant at Huaihai road; In 1995, the first McDonald's restaurant was built in

Nanjing city, in opening day, the national average expenditure was broken instead of a new record. In December of 1999 and in August 2000, the McDonald’s restaurant

was established in Western Chinese city of Chengdu and Chongqing, during the opening day, the intraday sales broke the history of day sales in China. McDonald's has now opened thousands of stores in large and medium cities; most of these cities' restaurant has started to implement a 24 hour opening system. Its current biggest competitor is KFC.

2. Aim and objectives

Aim

At the beginning, it is to have a basic understanding of the current development

situation of these two western fast food restaurants in Chinese markets. In other words, my aim of this report is to find out which one is the more popular and more developed in Chinese markets.

Objectives

There are three objectives in my report. Firstly, one of the objectives is to make a comparison of the recent sales achievement of the two restaurants in China. Another purpose is to seek out reasons which have great impact on the outcomes. In addition, it is necessary to work out various kinds of assessments concerning the two fast food restaurants in the Chinese market. The assessments are mainly obtained from Chinese students in the University of Hull and domestic ones.

3. Literature review

Before I prepared to write the review of my study, I have referred to many journals, textbooks, newspapers as well as associating the theme of websites. The journal China brand magazine (2009) provided much significant information for

Diet is the base of living, with no exception in China or the United States or other countries. Food culture is an important part of the national culture. With the entrance of the 21st century, cross-cultural communication has become more and more frequent, among which food culture has been the most basic content. However, because of the differences in living environments, customs and value concepts China and the United States have formed their own different food cultures. As a result, there appear some misunderstandings sometimes between Chinese and the U.S.A in their communication. This paper explores the differences between Chinese and the United States food culture, and will analyze the differences of food cultures between China and the America from diet concept, diet object and, diet manner, tableware and etiquette so as to facilitate the efficient communication between Chinese and American.

I. Introduction An Analysis of the Differences between Chinese and American Food Culture

As we know, with the entrance of the 21st century, cross-cultural communication has been a more and more popular activity even among common people. However, because of the differences of areas and environments and customs, different nations have formed their specific cultures. Among the four aspects of clothing, eating, housing and behaving, Chinese people have got closer and closer to American in other three aspects except in eating. It is only in the aspect of eating that Chinese people have the biggest difference with American. Food culture is an important component of the national cultures. It also plays an essential role in non-verbal cultures in cross-cultural communication. China has a long and rich history on its food culture. In China almost everything is closely related to eating. For example, when Chinese people meet, they will ask „Have you eaten yet‟ to replace American‟s „Hello or How are you‟. It is very interesting prologue in the world.

Meanwhile, American food culture is not as developed as that of China and Western countries are not that particular about cooking as China. Knowing the differences of food cultures between China and American is good for English learners to have more complete understanding of both eastern and western cultures and it also increases the chance of success in cross-cultural communication, and helps people avoid unnecessary misunderstandings. The most important thing is that we can get more chance with our international trade and so on.

II. Chinese and American Food Culture

2.1 Characteristics of Chinese food culture

“Chinese Civilization is more than 5,000 years old and has made numerous significant contributions in agriculture, the arts, religion and philosophy, and warfare”. (Food and Culture, 2004) In this culture, it makes China contain more expansive and profound food culture. It has experienced several thousand years of history development, and has become one of the most important Chinese traditional cultures of department. China‟s landscape is dominated by two rivers (The Yellow River in the north and the Chang Jiang River in the south). The north plain through which the Yellow River flows agriculturally very fertile; its main food is wheat, sorghum and so on. However, in the south the Chang Jiang River flow take rice as main food. The difference is not only at the main food, it is also with cuisines. There are Shandong

cuisine, Jiangsu cuisine, Guangdong cuisine and Sichuan cuisine. These four major cuisines have different features, but in common is with making complex fastidious, the product methods are very complex, and have a great diversity of taste and dishes, this is amazing. Because of our vast land, there are differences in climate, products and custom in every place. For a long time, on food was formed many flavor. Chinese people generally believe that it is sour in east, hot in west, sweet in south and salty in north. On the other hand, all the year round, according to season for eat is a feature in China‟s cooking. Since ancient times, our country has been according to season changes to taste, and dishes. Winter taste strong, summer flavor cleaner; in the winter more braised stews, summer more cold. It is unbelievable.

In the long-term development, evolution and accumulation process, Chinese people gradually formed its own unique food folk from many aspects, such as diet structure, food production, food utensils, nutrition healthy and diet aesthetic, this created a diet with unique flavor of the Chinese food culture, become a pearl of the world food culture. In a word, more and more people think that eating is not only a way of filling one's stomach but also a way of enjoyment.

2.2 Characteristics of the American food culture

【Summary】 As different countries have different histories and cultures, there are a lot of differences in the habit of conducts and the ceremony, especially between our China and the west countries. The jokes and the mistakes caused by misunderstanding is not unusual. This shows that the understanding of the different etiquettes between Chinese and the Westerners is absolutely necessary. In the office, to understand each other’s customer will be conductive to the exchanges between the countries. A person who understands others’ rituals and folk customs can be seen as respecting for others and can be easier to make a good impression on the other side. Along with the constant development of Chinese culture and the Western culture, Chinese ritual and the Western ritual are fusions. The Westerners have accepted the reasonable factors in Chinese culture and other important feelings. Chinese people have gradually accepted the advanced civilization of the Western culture and etiquette style. However, in real life, the etiquette’s impact due to cultural differences between China and the West still exists. The paper explores the differences between Chinese etiquette and the Western etiquette to make Chinese communicate with the Westerners more easily.

1. Introduction

China is one of the four ancient countries who with long civilizations, the Chinese nation is the uniquely nation which exists thousands years in the world. China's etiquette, began at the Xia、Shang、Zhou dynasties and developed in Tang and Song dynasties. After many years it finally formed into its own system. The western society, is also the continuator of some ancient civilizations. While after the Middle Ages darkness, it eventually met the Revival of Learning, and gestated the capitalism and modern civilization. So there is a totally difference

between the western etiquette and China's. As the developing of China's reform and opening policy, the international communication is increasing speedly. the differences of Chinese and western culture etiquette are showed more clearly. So we need to understand these differences in order to communicate more conveniently .

2.The differences in daily intercommunication

Most Chinese often use "Have you eat?"or "Go where?" to say with each other, because it shows I care about you. But for westerners, this greeting will make them feel embarrassed and unhappy, because these questions are all very private. They will consider you are cross-examining them.In western countries, they just say hello to each other or Good morning\afternoon\evening in the daily lives. But British meeting will say: "it is a fine day today!" Appellation, in Chinese, usually only between close friends we can use "first names". But in the west, "use first names" are more frequently than that in Chinese.

3. The differences in dining etiquette

We Chinese people have the saying called "Chinese peopel treat the eating as the biggest thing", it shows that we are paying more attention to food than anything else. Chinese cuisine considering about the colour, fragrance, taste, shape and pay more attention to the nutrition and delicious. The western diet is just on the contrary, they think more about absorbing nutrition and never care the color or taste. Westerners are eating to survive and health, it seems they just eat rather then enjoy dinner.

In the dining environment, Chinese people always lively, many people drink together, talking and laughing loudly to build a kind of warm dining atmosphere. While the westerners in dinner, are very quiet and peace.They think in table people must care his manners and keep quiet and couldn't forget himself.

4. The differences in clothing etiquette

Western men in the public occasions usually wear a business suit. The conservative style is wearing white shirt and tie. They like black, so they often wear black shoes. Western women wear dresses in a formal place. Besides this, they have the custom of wearing earrings go out.

Western countries, especially in the United States, people like to wear casual clothes, such as t-shirts and jeans.

Today, the Chinese dress changes a lot and become more westernization, some traditional clothes such as ZhongShanZhuang、cheongsam are couldn't be found in common family.In formal occasions we dress like the western society while in the common life,we still can find many people wearing vests, shorts and slippers etc .

5.The development and fusion of China and western etiquette culture Etiquette is also a kind of culture,so it likes culture changing .With the globalization developing up, and the background of the economic and cultural fusion wits westerns'.Chinese traditional etiquette mixture with western etiquette is never ceasing. How to protect our Chinese traditional etiquette is a very serious problem.

Just take food for example,Now there are more and more western style-food restaurants in cities. Our children are always go to KFC and Mcdonald.As in youth, they just follow the western and refuse to accept our traditional food.

Western etiquette culture, in our China society, are becoming more and more popular. But whether western etiquette is better than ours? The answer is very obvious.We could learn from western etiquette but couldn't abandon our own etiquette. We should carry forward our etiquette to the outside countries.Let the foreigners learn our Chinese.Only foreign people agree with our culture, our etiquette then can really popular in the world.

6. Conclusion.

Today our China faces many unprecedented challenges, both physical and spiritual, especially cultural aspects are urgent need a set of complete and reasonable values to united our understanding. And the unified etiquette culture is the "first", only understand the difference between western culture etiquette and ours, can build a successful contemporary Chinese society culture etiquette system, and achieve the ideal harmonious society.
