阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A new book called ―Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother‖ by Amy Chua has caused a debate about cultural differences in parenting. Amy Chua is a teacher in an American university and both of her parents are Chinese. In the book, Ms. Chua writes about how

she taught her daughters. She told NBC television that she had a clear list of what her daughters were not allowed to do, such as having a play date, watching TV or playing computer games and getting any grade less than an A.

Many people are against Amy Chua’s parenting style, even her husband, who is American. They say it is rude and unfair to children. But she says her parents raised her and her three sisters in that way.

Ms. Chua says after her younger daughter shouted ―I hate my life! I hate you!‖ she decided to because she was afraid of losing her daughter. But she also says American parents often have low expectations of their children’s abilities.

―The debate is about what it means to be a successful parent and what it means to be a successful child,‖ said Stacy De Broff, who has written four books on parenting. She says Amy Chua’s parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. It is a traditional way of parenting among immigrants (移民). They hope to get a better future for their children.

She also sees a risk (风险). When children have no time to be social or to develop their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. De Broff advises parents to develop their own style of parenting and not just repeat the way they were raised.

36. What do we learn about Amy Chua?

A. She has three excellent daughters. B. She moved to the US at a young age.

Alibaba started taking the lead in China by connecting big Chinese manufacturers (制造商) with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, Alibaba.com allowed business to buy almost everything. Alibaba’s advantage wasn’t hard to judge: size. Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its market attracts 231 million active buyers, 8 million sellers, 11.3 billion orders a year — and It encourages people to use its markets — not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale.

If you want a quick look into the influence(影响) of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience. I moved to Beijing a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted. ―You’re looking

for what exactly? Why not try it? ‖ my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my

A euphemism (from the Greek words eu - well and pheme - speak) is a word or expression that is used when people want to find a polite or less direct way of talking about difficult or embarrassing topics like death or the bodily functions. Most people, for example, would find it very difficult to say in plain language that they have arranged for their sick old dog to be killed. They would soften the pain by saying: We had Ruby put down or we had Ruby put to sleep. Many people prefer to call someone plain than ugly, or cuddly rather than fat.

Euphemisms are an important part of every language, but it seems that English has an ever-growing number of them. The non-native speaker not only has to make sense of the euphemisms he hears, he also has to learn which euphemisms are appropriate in any particular situation. He might be aware that his American friend needs to use the toilet when she asks where the bathroom (or restroom, or comfort station) is, but he is less likely to guess that his English friend has the same need when he says he has to see a man about a dog. He might have learned, for example, that in the family way is a euphemism for pregnant. If, however, he says to his boss, “Congratulations! I hear your wife is in the family way,” he would be using an expression that is too familiar for the circumstances.

Schools are full of euphemisms. At Frankfurt International School, for example, the special lessons given to students who are having difficulties in their school subjects are called Study Center (in the middle school) and Academic Workshop (in the high school). Teachers rightly do not want to upset students or parents by being too frank or straightforward, and usually choose a softer word or expression to convey the same message.

61. According to the passage, people use euphemisms in order to ________.

A. avoid embarrassment B. make themselves understood

C. to sound straightforward D. attract attention

62. A person who is described as plain and cuddly is in fact ________.

A. tall and handsome B. ugly and fat

C. ugly but tall D. pretty and slim

63. When an English lady says she has to see a man about a dog, she might want to ________.

One animal which has died out was once a kind of bird in large numbers in North America: the passenger pigeon. The passenger pigeon bred(繁殖)in the

【福州高级中学历年高一第二学期英语试卷】

eastern part of the U.S. and Canada and often migrated(迁徙) to the southern U.S. during the winter months. The bird’s name didn’t come from the migrations but from its movements in search of food. The passenger pigeons were social birds, traveling in amazingly large numbers from millions to one or two billion. Passing overhead, a large group of birds could darken the sky like storm clouds for a period of hours.

A hundred or more pairs of pigeons often nested in the same tree, each female laying a single egg. The birds lived mainly on wild seeds and nuts, but sometimes many of them would storm down onto a field or a garden and eat everything in sight.

While large numbers of passenger pigeons were recorded in the late nineteenth century, the population decreased rapidly, and the last wild bird was shot in 1904. The sudden disappearance of the bird remains a mystery, but an explanation is found in its habit of nesting and moving in large numbers. Farmers, who considered them pests, found it easy to catch hundreds at a time in nets. Also, as passenger pigeons were tasty game birds, market hunters shot hundreds of thousands on their nesting grounds. By 1900 the passenger pigeon was already rare.

Carol Vaness, the well-known American opera singer, was born in San Diego and began her professional performance in San Francisco. She has sung at many of the major opera houses in the world. Unlike other world-famous male opera singers (Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Marcello Giordani), she was particularly known for her Mozart operatic roles.

At the Metropolitan Opera in New York City where she often sings, Carol’s voice must be loud enough to be heard by four thousand people. It must reach every person in the theater, without a microphone, even when she’s singing softly. The reason Carol can project her voice that far is the way she breathes.

“When you breathe, it’s like a swimmer taking a deep breath before going underwater,” Carol explains. “You have to take a lot of air into your lungs.”

According to Carol, the main difference between pop singing and opera is “how you breathe, how much air you take in, and how you control it coming out. Regular singing is more like speaking, and it’s a lot softer.

Ever since she started piano lessons at the age of ten, Carol has loved music. As she got older, she decided to become a music teacher. When she went to college, she took singing lessons as part of her studies. Her voice teacher discovered that nineteen-year-old Carol had an exceptionally beautiful soprano(女高音) voice – the highest singing voice for women.

Today, Carol performs throughout the United States and Europe and she has song for almost twenty years. But she has never forgotten where she started singing in the first palace. “Put your heart into your singing and enjoy it,” says Carol, “because singing is a great joy. That’s why I sing. In fact, that’s why everybody sings.”

24. What is the best title for this passage?

FUZHOU, South China, Dec. 18 (Fujian Daily) –Students of Fujian Province who date (约会) in middle school have slowly increased recently. It’s said that they have obviously worse study skills, are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use than their single classmates, according to a new research from the University of Fuzhou. “Romantic relationships are a symbol of adolescence(青春期), but very few studies have examined how adolescents are different in the development of these relationships.” said Lin Ming, the study author and professor in the College of Public Health.

Professor Lin followed a group of 624 students over a four-year period from 9th to 12th grade. Each year, the group of students completed a survey showing whether they had dated and reported the frequency(频率) of different behaviors, including

the use of alcohol and tobacco. Their teachers completed questionnaires (调查表) about the students' performance in study. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.

“Teachers regarded the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills,” according to the report. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to success in study such as doing work for extra credit(学分), being well organized, finishing homework, working hard .

“Dating a classmate may have the emotional complications(复杂)” Lin said, “When the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the former-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression(消沉) and divert (转移) attention from studying.”

“Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school.” Lin concluded finally.

In the UK, most children have their lunches at school, but in some schools, parents can choose what their children eat. The children can have a school dinner — a hot, cooked meal; or they can take a packed (包装的)lunch with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.

Often parents know what their children want. Cath, a mother of three children, told us, “My children have packed lunches because they say they hate school dinners. So I make three packed lunches every morning.”

However, another mother, Susan, made a different choice. She said, “My daughters have always had school dinners. I think they probably get healthier food at school than a few sandwiches I make for them.”

But how healthy are school dinners? Kaz, a father, thought poorly of them. He said, “Fizzy (起泡的) drinks were offered and I think there were lots of chips.”

Jamie Oliver spent a year working in a school kitchen. He was worried about the unhealthy food which included burgers, pizzas and chips. So he tried to cook healthy food such as good stews(炖肉) and curries (咖喱菜肴) for the children instead.

So Jamie improved the school dinners, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food in that school. Then he advised the government to improve school food across the country. And it seems that the changes have begun.
