Minu Pauline,an Indian restaurant owner, put an unlocked fridge outside her shop, filled with free fresh meals for the homeless 24 hours a day, every day.

“I have often seen the homeless and the hungry, especially the aged, dig through garbage bins behind my kitchen for some leftovers to satisfy their stomach, and it really hurts me, ” Minu said. So she came up with the brilliant idea, allowing hungry people to take what they need without the shame of having to beg. She named the fridge “Tree of Goodness”. Minu makes sure the fridge is always stocked with about 50 packets of fleshly—cooked food from her restaurant.

Minu insists that the fridge is not a design to boost sales at her restaurant. On the contrary, she discourages customers from buying food at her restaurant to leave in the fridge. “This is not a campaign to make people invest more in charity; the idea is to donate what you already have. If you have extra food either at home or when you eat out, come and drop it in this refrigerator,” said Minu. She has only one request—that people should write the date on the packets they leave behind to ensure that the food is fresh.

The project isn’t something Minu wants to claim as her own. Instead, she wants it to become a community activity, a movement that will spread across the city—at other restaurants, homes, and anywhere else where there’s a chance of food going to waste.

In the short time that the fridge has been running, dozens of needy people line up to collect free meals every day. People have been leaving food in it too—about 200 to 300 packets find their way into the fridge every single day. That is quite a significant contribution front the locals.

24. Why did Minu put a fridge filled with food outside her restaurant?

A. To attract more customers B. To advertise for her restaurant

C. To feed hungry and homeless people D. To make people invest more in charity

25. What gave her the idea of “Tree of Goodness”?

A. Beggars asking her for food in the street. B. The hungry digging for food in the dustbins.

C. People wasting too much food in her restaurant. D. There being many easily collected free meals.

26. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. Minu’s project is well received by the local people.

B. More fridges are needed across the whole city.

C. No homeless people will suffer from hunger from now on.

D. No food will go to waste in Minu Pauline’s community.

27. What does the passage convey to us?

A. Optimism and selflessness.

C. Bravery and determination. B. Honesty and devotion. D. Kindness and generosity.

C

I cherish being around people who are totally comfortable with who they are. There always seems to be an aura (光环) of love and acceptance that follows these people around. I think it is because they have figured out one of the biggest secrets to life: the chance of being loved and accepted grows so much when we can truly say we couldn’t be more comfortable with ourselves.

People like being round those who are comfortable with themselves because they are less threatening. We all feel the need to protect ourselves from threats aimed at our insecurities.

A Special Appointment

Years ago I moved to Woodland Hills to take a job in a small hospital‟s emergency department. No one wanted to work on Christmas Eve, so the shift (轮班) went to me. I kissed my family goodbye and went off to spend the night in the hospital. It At 9 pm, the ambulance brought in a man in his 60s who was having a heart attack. His face was pale, and he was frightened. The whole night I did my best to save his life. Before I left in the morning to spend Christmas with my family, I stopped by to see how he was doing. It was still tough, but he had survived the night and was sleeping.

The following year I got Christmas Eve duty again. At 9 pm sharp, the ward clerk told me there was a couple who wanted to speak with me. When I approached them, the man introduced himself as Mr. Lee and said, “You probably don‟t remember me, but last Christmas Eve you saved my life. Thank you for the year you gave me.” He and his wife hugged me, handed me a small gift, and left.

The following year a new doctor had joined the group, but I wanted to see if Mr. and Mrs. Lee would return. This time, I volunteered for the shift. I kept an eye on the door. Once again, at exactly 9 pm, the Lees appeared, carrying a warmly wrapped bundle. It was their new grandchild. Mr. Lee, his family and I spent 13 Christmas Eves together. The Entropia Universe

The Entropia Universe is a virtual world on the Internet, which seems very like our real life. It is set in a distant future and based on a planet called Calypso. Entropia was the brainchild of a group of Swedish computer lovers who decided to see if they could create a three dimensional (维度的) virtual world that could be placed on the Internet. They did manage after they received the financial backing they needed.

The game can be played for free, but nearly all in-game activities require personal resources that you have available to use.

Although there are various activities to keep you busy on Calypso, what most people do first is to find themselves a profession, such as hunting the fierce animals on Calypso, mining the precious minerals and making tools. Then they can think about buying their virtual house or paying a visit to a virtual nightclub or doing any of the other activities that make life bearable.

Entropia has its very own economy (经济) and its own currency, the PED (Project Entropia Dollars). Players move real world money into PED which they then use to pay for their life on Calypso. However, the virtual things inside Entropia do have a real value in the outside world, and careful business deals mean that players can actually make real money there. PED can be changed into dollars any time at a rate of 10PED to 1US$.

What‟s so impressive about The Entropia Universe is the number of players; currently more than 600,000 representing over 220 countries from planet Earth. A number of players insist that it‟s a good way to make money. However, the reality of Entropia‟s economic system is that most people end up paying more than they earn and it‟s not uncommon to find players who are paying up to $200 a month into their PED account. This might not be the most economical way of spending one‟s free time. However, some people say that for them the fact that they can escape the realities of the earthbound life and become a different person with a completely different life for a few hours every week is worth the use of money, even if they don‟t get any interest rates on it.

63. What can we learn about The Entropia Universe?

A. It costs nothing to join.

B. It focuses on business plans.

C. It is designed for computer lovers.

D. It presents what life is like on other planets.

64. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

A. What people do on Calypso.

B. When people buy houses there.

C. How people make life bearable.

D. Why people often find a job first.

65. According to the author, playing on The Entropia Universe ______.

A. may be very annoying

C. is a cheap way to kill time B. can be quite expensive D. is a good way to earn money

66. What can be inferred about The Entropia Universe?

A. It is technical.

C. It is ridiculous. B. It is satisfying. D. It is educational.

Being Authoritative (由权威的) Parents

Phrases like “tiger mom” and „„helicopter parent” have made their way into everyday language. Many of us find ourselves drawn to the idea that with just a bit more parental hard work and effort, we might turn out children with bright futures. But is there anything wrong with a kind of “overparenting style”?

Parental involvement has a long history of being studied. Many of the studies, conducted by Diana Baumrind, a famous psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, have found that a good parent is the one who is involved and reacts to her child in a positive way, who sets high expectations but gives her child independence. These “authoritative parents” appear to hit the sweet spot of parental involvement and generally raise children who do better academically, psychologically and

Today was my high school reunion. I was the most remarkable student for all the wrong reasons. I was born with some birth defects and learning disabilities. I overcame them, but it was hard. While working blue-collar jobs, I lived in my car for a few years.

On a cold winter night several years ago, I met Dr. X in the emergency room. He was a former classmate of mine, and we pretended not to know one another. He discovered I was living in my car and heard some of my stories. Then he arranged for me to be admitted to the hospital for a day so I could get warmed up and recover. When I left the hospital, I found a $100 bill in the gas tank door of my van (拖车). I’m sure it was from him.

I now have a home of my own and I'm doing OK, considering everything. When I sent my reservation and check to the reunion committee, it was returned uncashed with a $50 bill along with a note saying “Please don't come.”

I guess my classmates are more closed-minded than I thought they would be. I was hoping age would change them but my wish turned out to be nothing but a joke. In addition to the reservation return, I have also seen a few forwarded emails mocking my attempts to find out about the event. I hope none of those people were blessed with a child with learning or physical issues.

I guess people never change on some things. Thankfully, I have found nicer, caring people along my journey in life, and for that I'd like to thank all of the kind people in the world.

32. What made the author the most remarkable student?

A. Living in his own car. B. His physical problems.

C. Providing wrong reasons. D. His efforts to help others.

nd33. What can we infer from the 2 paragraph?

A. Dr. X sent a van to the author as a gift.

B. The author was cured by Dr. X that night.

C. The author and Dr. X didn’t recognize each other at first.

D. The author and Dr. X felt embarrassed at first that night.

34. What might be the key barrier to the author’s reservation?

A. His experience in the hospital. B. The closed mind of his classmates.

C. His uncashed check. D. The location of the reunion.

35. What does the underlined word “mocking” (paragraph 3) refer to?

A. laughing at B. insisting on C. caring for D. giving away

Do you have an emotional brain or a rational (理性的) one? Researchers at Australia’s Monash University have found actual difference in the brains of people who respond emotionally to others’ feelings compared with those who respond more rationally.

A study published in the journal NeuroImage has looked at whether people who have more brain cells in certain areas of the brain are better at certain types of empathy, according to Science Daily. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person, and the two types investigated were cognitive (认知的) empathy and affective (情感的) empathy.

“Every day people use empathy with, and without, their knowledge to get around in the social world,” said Robert Eres from Monash University’s School of Psychological Sciences. “We use it for communication, to build relationships, and to increase our understanding of others.”

“People who are high on affective empathy are often those who get quite fearful when watching a scary movie, or start crying during a sad scene. Those who have high cognitive empathy are those who are more rational, for example a psychologist helping someone,” explained Eres.

The results of the study showed that people with high scores for affective empathy had more gray matter in a part of the brain called the insula, found right in the “middle” of the brain. Those who scored higher for cognitive empathy had more in a part called the midcingulate cortex—an area above the corpus callosum, which

You may need to give first aid. First aid is defined as the emergency care given to a sick or injured person. The goals of first aid are to prevent death and to prevent injuries from becoming worse.

Each emergency condition is different. However, the following rules apply to any kind of emergency.

*Be aware of your limitations. Do not try to do more than you are able to. Nor should you do things if you are unfamiliar with them. Do what you can under the conditions at the time.

* Stay calm. Acting calmly will help the victim feel safe. *Take a quick look to see if the victim is bleeding, and if there is a pulse.

*Keep the victim lying down and do not move him or her. You could make an injury worse if you move the victim.

*Take necessary emergency steps. * Call for help or ask someone to make the EMS system(急救系统)start.

* Do not remove clothing unless you have to. If clothing must be removed, tear the clothes along the seams(线缝).

* Keep the victim warm. Cover the victim with a blanket. Coats and sweaters can be used if a blanket cannot be found.

* Reassure(使……安心)the victim. Explain what is happening and that help has been called.

*Do not give the victim any food or fruits. *Keep the bystanders(旁观者)away from the victim. Bystanders want to have a look, offer advice, and say something about the victim’s condition. The victim may believe that the condition is worse than it really is.

1. The most important purpose of first aid is _______ .

A. to stop death

B. to keep the injured person calm

C. to help the victim stay in a safe place

D. to see if the injured person is still living

person in emergency conditions.

B. Don’t remove the clothes of the injured person no matter what happens.

C. It is necessary to cover the victim with a blanket.

D. If the injured person feels hungry, you should give him or her some food.

4. Why should bystanders be kept away from the victim according to the text?

A. Because bystanders can prevent the victim from receiving first aid.

B. Because what bystanders say can make the victim think the condition is very bad.

C. Because the victim doesn’t want to accept the advice of bystanders.

D. Because the victim hates being surrounded by bystanders.
