When Sally Ride was ten years old, she had no idea that she would someday grow up to be one of America’s first women astronauts. In fact, if you had asked her then what she wanted to be, she would have said, ―I want to play shortst op (游击手) for the Los Angeles Dodgers.‖ Sally collected baseball cards by the boxful, and she knew the name and batting average of every player in the National League.

But major league baseball didn’t seem much of a possibility for a girl, even an athletic one like Sally, so her father and mother talked her into taking tennis lessons when she was twel ve. At first she hated to trade in her baseball bat for a tennis racket, but it wasn’t long before she started to win tournaments in her new sport. ―Tennis became much more fun when I started winning,‖ Sally remembers.

Sally first became interested in the space program in 1962 when astronaut John Glenn orbited the earth in his Mercury space capsule. Sally was ten years old at the time, but she remembers the launch and the splashdown as if they happened yesterday. The girl who used to memorize batting averages became a space fan. She quickly learned the name of all the eight NASA astronauts, the date of every launch, and the name and number of every spacecraft from Freedom 7 to Skylab 3.

By the time she was sixteen, Sally had decided to become an astrophysicist. She had also become a nationally ranked tennis player. She remembers yawning through an important tennis match on June 20, 1969, after staying up all night to watch Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon. Sally lost the match. As Sally got older, many of her friends started playing professional tennis. Some of them tried to talk her into quitting school to join them on the professional tennis circuit. But Sally said no. ―Black holes are more interesting to me than backhands,‖ she told them. Now she knows that she made the right choice, but in 1970 Sally had no way of knowing that NASA would open the space program to women.

56. When still a child, Sally Ride wanted to be a (an) _____ when she grew up.

A. baseball player B. astronaut C. tennis player D. astrophysicist

57. Sally Ride became a space fan _____.

A. when she was 12 B. in 1962 C. in 1970 D. in 1976

A. she kept yawning while playing the game

B. she was no longer interested in tennis

C. she didn’t have enough sleep the night before

D. she was thinking of becoming an astrophysicist

Whatever projects you have in mind for the home, a wishbook is a way to design the plans.

Creating a wishbook is a fun, mind-expanding and free way to begin any design project in your home. Even if your budget or schedule will not allow you to begin your project immediately, you can start collecting materials for your book today. The more time you spend making your book, the more your project is likely to reflect your vision and your tastes.

Even if you don’t know why you’re attracted to the image, add it to your file. Even if you know you’ll never have enough money to build it or buy it, include it anyway. Tear out the magazine page, photocopy a book illustration(图解,说明), sketch your neighbor’s front gate, cut an article from the newspaper or photograph that house on the corner you’ve always admired and add it all to your book.

Your wishbook might include:

Product catalogs with current addresses, part numbers and specifications.

Pages from magazines on easy decorating projects you’d like to do.

It often happens that a number of applicants with almost identical qualifications and experience all apply for the same position. In their educational background, special skills and work experience, there is little, if anything, to choose between half a dozen candidates. How then does the employer make a choice? Usually on the basis of an interview.

There are many arguments about the interview as a selection procedure. The main argument against it is that it results in a wholly subjective decision. As often as not, employers do not choose the best candidate, but the one who makes a good first impression on them. Some employers, of course, reply to this argument by saying that

they have become so experienced in interviewing staff that they are able to make a sound assessment of each candidate’s likely performance. Unfortunately, both for the employers and applicants, there are many people of great ability who simply do not interview well. There are also, of course, people who interview extremely well, but are later found to be very unsatisfactory employees.

Those in favour of the interview insist that the well-structured procedure is valid in assessing a candidate’s ability, an essential guarantee for the future job. They also argue that an employer is concerned not only with a candidate’s ability, but with the suitability of his or her personality for the particular work situation. Many employers, for example, will overlook occasional inefficiencies from their secretary so long as she has a pleasant personality. Perhaps the real purpose of an interview is not to assess the assessable aspects of each candidate but to make a guess at the more intangible things, such as personality, character and social ability.

Today, interview is still the key section of the entire selection procedure, though different employers have different standards for competence. Generally speaking, candidates who interview well tend to be quietly confident, but never boastful; direct and straight-forward in their questions and answers; cheerful and friendly, but never over-familiar; and sincerely enthusiastic and optimistic. Candidates who interview badly tend to be at either end of the spectrum of human behaviour. They are either very shy or over-confident. They show either a lack of enthusiasm or an excess of it. They either talk too little or never stop talking. They are either over-polite or rudely abrupt.

63. We can infer from the passage that an employer might tolerate his secretary’s occasional mistakes if the latter is _____.

A. direct B. shy C. cheerful D. competent

64. What is the author’s attitude towards the interview as a selection procedure?

A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Unconcerned.

65. The last paragraph indicates _____.

A. a link between success in interview and personality

B. connections between work abilities and personality

C. differences in interview experience

D. differences in personal behaviour

Birds Can “Read” Human Gaze

We all know that people sometimes change their behavior when someone is looking their way. Now, a new study reported online on April 2nd in Current Biology shows that jackdaws—birds related to crows with eyes that appear similar to human eyes—can do the same.

―Jackdaws seem to recognize the eye’s role in visual perception, or at the very least they are extremely sensitive to the way that human eyes are oriented(朝向),‖ said Auguste von Bayern, formerly of the University of Cambridge and now at the University of Oxford.

When presented with a preferred food, hand-raised jackdaws took significantly longer to get the reward when a person was directing his eyes towards the food than when he was looking away, according to the research team led by Nathan Emery of the University of Cambridge and Queen Mary University of London. The birds hesitated only when the person was unfamiliar and thus potentially threatening.

In addition, the birds were able to interpret human communicative gestures, such as gaze alternation and pointing, to help them find hidden food, they found. The birds were unsuccessful in using unmoving cues, including ey e gaze or head orientation.【It,happened,when,I,was,seven,years,old.,I,jumped,into,the,water...】

Unlike most birds, jackdaws’ eyes have a dark pupil surrounded by a silvery white iris. The researchers said they believe jackdaws are probably sensitive to human eyes because, as in humans, eyes are an important means of communication for them. The hand-raised birds examined in the study may be even better than wild jackdaws at attending to human gaze and responding to the gestures of the people who have raised them.

The findings are particularly notable given that most other species investigated so far, including our closest relatives the chimpanzee and ―man’s best friend,‖ the dog, are not particularly sensitive to eye orientation and eye gaze, von Bayern said. Rather, she continued, chimps and dogs seem to rely on other cues such as head or body orientation in determining the looking direction of others. The results suggest that birds may deserve more respect for their mental abilities.

―We may have understated the psychological world of birds,‖ von Bayern said. ―Jackdaws, among many other birds, form pair ties for life and need to have much in common and work together with their partner, which requires an efficient way of communicating and sensitivity to their partner’s viewpoint.‖

67. A hand- raised jackdaw hesitates to take a preferred food when the feeder _____.

A. is looking away from the food B. holds the food in his hand

C. is looking at the food D. is unfamiliar to the bird

68. According to the researchers, jackdaws can notice human eye orientation probably because _____.

A. like humans, they also use eyes to communicate

B. they are far more intelligent than other birds

C. they are mostly hand-raised by humans

D. their eyes also have a dark pupil

69. Why does the author refer to chimpanzees and dogs?

A. To suggest that they are much better at interpreting gaze alternation.

B. To reflect how unique jackdaws are in being able to notice gaze orientation.

C. To show that they communicate more frequently with humans than jackdaws.

D. To make clear that they rely on other means in determining people’s intention.

70. What does the research finding s uggest?

Not all jackdaws are good at attending to human gaze.

B. We may have understated jackdaws’ mental abilities.

C. We know embarrassingly less about birds than we assume.

D. The closer we communicate with animals, the better we understand them.

Villagers of the high desert of Ladakh in India’s Jammu and Kashmir state used to harvest plentiful crops of wheat, fruits, and vegetables in summer. But for years the streams have run dry in spring , just when farmers needed water to sow seeds. They had water when it wasn’t needed during the rest of the year, such as in winter, when people let water run from taps to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting. Villagers blame climate change for causing glaciers (冰川) to shrink by melting them faster than before.

To solve the water-shortage problem, Sonam Wangchuk , a mechanical engineer, and his team of volunteers are building a huge vertical block of ice in Phyang, nine miles from Leh, the capital of Ladakh. When spring comes and the artificial glacier melts, farmers will have flowing water. This method stores water without the need for concrete water storage tanks or dam. While it won’t stop glaciers from shrinking , it could help people adapt to a warming world.

Last winter, Wangchuk built a six-meter-high on am open riverbank to test his novel idea. It stored 150 ,000 liters of water at 3,170 meters, the lowest altitude in Leh valley. This, he said, proved ice pyramids (金字塔)can be built anywhere in the region. When the prototype lasted until mid-May , he was encouraged to attempt a 30-metre-high pyramid of ice this winter. But the cost of piping water from the Phyang stream, 1. 5 miles away, was a huge S 100, 000. Not discouraged, he somehow raised the money and work began on 21 January.

The site was waterproofed with clay (粘土),so when the ice pyramid melted, water would not get into the desert sand. Sprinklers (喷淋装置)sprayed water from above, and the cold wind froze the tiny drops of water as they hit the ground. A cone of ice built up slowly but steadily. With only two more weeks of winter left, time is running short. The pyramid will likely be no more than 15 meters high when completed, half the size of the planned 30 meters.

“This year was the first time, so there were complications and delays, Wangchuk said. “We wanted to achieve two things——to show how to make an ice pyramid and how to green a patch of desert. “It’s difficult to say how many people will eventually benefit;Fhyang village has only 2 ,000 people. But there’ll he enough water for many more. This is an economic as well as ecological activity. ”

In the coming years,Wangehuk hopes to build 80 to 90 ice pyramids, each more than 30 meters tall,in Phyang village. They'll store 1 bn liters of water, enough to irrigate 600 hectares ( 1,500 acres) of desert , he says. To make so many ice pyramids, the only additional investment is the pipeline. Wangehuk said:“We need more pipes so we can extend it farther and farther. It will take another $ 100,000 to make the other ice pyramids.” Once the pipes are laid, frozen ice pyramids can be built year after year without pumping in more money. The underground pipes will last a hundred years. But for now, the desert around the 3,500-metre-high Phyang will turn green in summer, as water flows for the first time in many years.

41. The writer mentions the harvest of crops in Ladakh at the beginning of the passage in order to____.

A. remind people of the importance of water protection B. show what people’s life used to be like in India

C. provide background information for Wangchuk’s effort

D. discuss the relationship between crops and water supply

42. The underlined word “prototype” ( Paragraph 3) probably means____.

A. the first design or model from which other forms are copied or developed

B. the glacier that provides the farmland and nearby rivers with water

C. a tall concrete building that consists of at least three floors

D. a small hill in cold areas where trees and grass can be planted 3

43. One problem with Wangchuk's method is that_____.

A. the ice pyramid can’t store enough water B. it is quite expensive to lay the pipes

C. the ice pyramid can’t be built high enough D. the weather can be too warm for the water to freeze

44. According to the above passage, one advantage of Wangchuk’s method is that_____.

A. it can stop glaciers from shrinking B. ice pyramids can be built anywhere in Leh valley

C. you can build as many ice pyramids as you like D. there is no need to build concrete dams

45. Where can you possibly find the above passage?

A. In a newspaper. B. In an official document. C. In a travel journal. D. In a research paper.

B

Below are some tips for women traveling alone.

Exercise hotel safety

There are many ways you can make a solo stay at a hotel safer. At cheek-in, you might consider asking for a room near the elevator so you won’t need to walk down long, potentially ill-lit hallways to reach your room. When filling out guest registration forms, consider using your first initial instead of your name, and skip the“ Mrs/Miss/Mr” check box. Additionally, make sure the clerk writes down your room number instead of saying it out loud. This will prevent anyone nearby from knowing where to find you later.

Arrive during the day

Arrive in new cities during the day. Areas around bus and train stations can be scary and/ojr deserted, and small towns tend to shut down early. Veteran solo traveler Mara Rothman of San Francisco notes that plenty of beautiful towns can appear mysterious at night, and locals who are genuinely trying to help you can appear unnecessarily threatening. Arriving during the day means you'll be able to find a place to stay and get to know where you are before dark.

Keep your documents safe

If you choose to wear a money belt, use it for storage and not as a purse. Constantly reaching under your shirt for money draws attention to it, and tends to defeat the purpose. Instead, keep your passport, extra stores of money, and other important documents well hidden, and use a bag or purse for carrying daily spending money.

Dress appropriately

To avoid attracting unwanted attention, dress as conservatively as the women you see around you. This doesn’t necessarily mean wearing the traditional dress, as that can sometimes have the opposite result. A good rule of thumb is to dress modestly. Think knee-length or longer skirts. Bare arms, shoulders, and legs are considered risked in some countries, so do the research before you go and once you’re there. Note which body parts the local women cover and do the same.

Know when to make friends

Traveling alone doesn’t always mean being alone. There are plenty of situations in which seeking out company can make for a safer and more enjoyable experience. Smaller hotels and hostels are great places to find like- minded travelers to explore new places with. In some countries, there are women-only sections in trains and women’s waiting rooms at train stations. Sticking close to families on public transportation and in unfamiliar public markets and bazaars is another technique some women use.

Show confidence to a great extent

Whether you’re on a street at home or 7 ,000 miles away, walking confidently and with direction is an effective technique for deterring unwanted attention, since appearing lost or confused can make you weak and easily damaged. If you are lost, walk into a shop or restaurant and ask for directions there. Try to avoid obviously looking at maps while you’re in the street. Study your route before you go, or find one of those wallet-sized maps that you can carefully palm and refer to secretly. 4

Use common sense

Using common sense is perhaps the single best tip for staying safe and having a good time while you,re traveling alone. This category includes the usual recommendations: don’t walk around late at night , don’t drink with strange men, don’t ride in empty compartments on trains, don’t compromise safety to save a few bucks on a hotel or transportation, and know how to use a pay phone.

46. The main purpose of the passage is to tell women_____.

A. where to travel alone B. how to make a safe and enjoyable trip

C. what to read on travel D. how to meet new people when traveling

47. Mara Rothman,s notes are mentioned in order to_____.

A. build up her reputation B. show admiration for her.

C. compare the experience D. make the tip convincing

48. To avoid being damaged, a woman traveling alone should _____.

A. stay away from the crowds B. use a money belt rather than a bag

C. wear the traditional dress D. find like-minded travelers for company

49. Which is the safest way for a woman when she gets lost along the way?

A. Keeping the important documents well hidden. B. Looking at maps when she is in the street.

C. Asking the way in a store or in a restaurant. D.Finding a place to stay and get her bearings before dark.

C

In a development that would have seemed hardly possible just over a decade ago, many of us have gained constant access to information. If we need to find out the score of a ballgame, learn how to perform a complicated mathematical task, or simply remember the name of the actress in the movie we are viewing, we need only turn to our laptops or smart phones and we can find the answers immediately. It has become such an ordinary practice to look up the answer to any question the moment it occurs. It can feel like going through withdrawal when we can’t find out something immediately. We are seldom offline unless by choice and the Internet, with its search engines like Baidu and Google and the information stored there, has become an external (外部的)memory source that we can access at any time.

Storing information externally is nothing particularly new, even before the invention of computers. In any group relationship, people typically develop a transactive (交换式)memory, which is a combination of memory stores held directly by individuals and the memory stores they can access because they are in touch with someone who knows that information. Like linked computers that can address each other’s memories, people in groups form transactive memory systems.

In a recent research led by Besty Sparrow of Columbia University, researchers have explored whether having online access to search engines has become a primary transactive memory source in itself. If asked the question whether there are any countries with only one color in their flag, for example,do we think about flags一or immediately think to go online to find out the answer?

In one experiment, the participants were asked to read 40 memorable unimportant statements of the type that they could look up online (e. g.,an ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain). Then they were asked to type the statements into computer to assure memory. Half the participants believed the computer would save what was typed and the other half believed the item would be erased. After the reading and typing task, participants wrote down as many of the statements as they could remember.

It turned out that participants who believed the computer would erase what they had typed had better recall than those who regarded the computer as the memory source.

The Internet has become a primary form of transactive memory , and processes of human memory are adapting to the new computing and communication technology. Just as we learn through transactive memory

The Lake

The day when Robert was born was the happiest day of my life. Unfortunately my wife decided she no longer wanted to be married to me. My little boy and I had to , only getting to see each other every other weekend.

One day, I decided to go fishing with my son, who was about 5 years old, at a nearby lake. We arrived at the lake early. Getting out of the car, we brought out all of the fishing equipment and our life jackets and the cooler that had our tasty lunch in it. I could just the day in my mind in hopes that it would never end. We both went out onto the dock(船坞)and I thought, “Do I put his life jacket on first or load the boat first?” I saw him skipping rocks on the water, so I decided to load the boat first.

I was just finishing up when I heard the splash. I turned and looked quickly expecting to see Robert standing there, but I did not see him anywhere. I jumped into the water to save my son immediately. I searched and searched but found him nowhere. I came up for a breath hoping to see him above water, now wondering how I could find him in the murky(浑浊的)water. I finally decided to go all the way to the bottom and 34 around, not coming up until I found him.

Finally, there on the bottom he was, his arms wrapped around the wooden pole that holds up the dock. I brought him to the and put him on the bank. While both of us were coughing and spitting out water, I just hugged him and was that I had found him in time.

When things finally calmed down, I asked one simple question, “Robert, why were you onto that pole on the bottom of the lake?” He looked at me with the most innocent and loving eyes and simply replied, “I was waiting for you, Daddy. I knew you would come to me.”

I thought that I could not be any or any madder at the same time and I just told him, “I sure do love you, sweetheart.” He replied, “I love you too, Dad.”

There is no amount of money or cars or jobs or any material thing that could replace being loved and someone so much. I am lucky to have the ability to love on such a high level, and the ability to forgive on the same level.

Our family never owned pets, but I had always wanted one. Just then, the cat meowed and jumped up onto my leg. Well, he seemed to like me! Maybe I didn‟t have to give him back after all! The cat kept meowing a lot. I knew I had to go to the store and get some cat food. On my way out, I saw a sign on the telephone pole: LOST CAT Black and white, very friendly. Collectors and mad collectors

Personally, I am not much of a collector. I collect photos of special times in my life, and I have a big collection of soft toys- rabbits, bears, elephants, dogs and snakes. I love them!

Most people collect things at some time in their life. Who hasn’t got a collection of photos, or books? Many people collect the letters or emails they’ve got from friends. And most children have a good toy collection. Most people don’t think of themselves as ‘collectors’ because they think that having a lot of photos or toys is part of life. However, there are some people who love collecting things as a hobby, and there is no limit to the things you can collect. You can collect anything, from stamps to toys to football match programmes to old photos. In fact, some people have extraordinary collections.

For example, Robert Opie collects things we normally throw away, things like old newspapers, sweet papers and boxes.

He has more than a quarter of a million things in his collection and you can find some of them in his own museum in Gloucester, UK.

When Stuart Graham from Sydney, Australia died aged 87 he left behind some extraordinary collections. His son Andy only discovered Stuart was a keen collector when he found a collection of over 5,000 old bus tickets, 3,000 old matchboxes and 1,000 toy soldiers. Andy did not want to keep these collections and decided to look on the Internet to see if anyone else would like the collections. He was surprised to find out that his father’s collections were very valuable and when he sold them, he bought a new car with the money.

Collectors collect things in different ways. You can go to specialist shops or markets to buy things for your collection, or you can buy collectors’ magazines. You can even look on the Internet at sites such as Ebay. Or you can trade things you have for something else that you would like. For example, if you have two stamps that are exactly the same, you might be able to trade one of them for a different on that you prefer.

Beginner’s guide to tarantulas

So you want to have a tarantula as a pet? You want to join the fastest growing hobby in the United States? Read this beginner’s guide to learn the most important facts.

What is a tarantula?

Tarantulas are primitive spiders. They are usually hairier and larger than normal spiders.

Why keep tarantulas?

Tarantulas are really interesting pets. They don’t need much space, they aren’t expensive to feed, they live a long time, they don’t make much mess, and they aren’t dangerous.

When did people start keeping tarantulas as a hobby?

They started in the 1970s when the ‘Mexican Redknee’ was brought to the US. By the 1990s there were about 200 different kinds of tarantula in the US, but some are better for beginners than others. Good beginner tarantulas include the ‘Pink Zebra Beauty’ and the Brazilian Black and White’ because they are not as dangerous as some of the other ones.

How do I look after a tarantula?

You can keep tarantulas in 10 gallon, glass boxes. They need a water bowl in the box and you should feed them once a week. Tarantulas eat insects, small mice and lizards. You can buy these(already dead) from a pet shop. You only need to clean the glass box about once every six months.

Can I get my tarantula out of its box and hold it?

No! A tarantula is not a pet like a dog, a cat or a rabbit and they do not like being held in your hands. Keep it in the glass box and watch it.

Are tarantulas dangerous?

Nobody has ever died from a tarantula bite, but some kinds of tarantula could give you a bad bite. Usually they prefer to run away from you than to bite you.

How can I find out more?

Look for a club near you for people who keep tarantulas as a hobby. You can also read these books: EXERCISES

1. Match the word with its correct meaning in the text.

An interview with Hannah

Welcome to today’s guest, Hannah Buchanan, from England. Hannah has come to talk to us about her hobbies. Hello, Hannah. Thank you for coming today.

Hello.

Could you tell us something about your hobbies?

Well, I like dancing and I play the piano and clarinet. I also have a rabbit and a hamster, and my sister has a guinea pig. I like looking after the pets—feeding them and cleaning their cages. Once a week I like going to the gym too, with my friends, to keep me fit.

How did you start dancing?

I don’t really know! I’ve been dancing since I was three years old. I changed schools when I was about eight because the dancing lessons at my old dancing school were not very serious. The dancing school I go to now is really good. I do one-to-one lessons and dancing competitions, which I really enjoy. Have you ever danced on stage?

Yes, I’ve been in two theatre productions-when I was 9 and 11, and then I was in a big show that my dancing school did. I love being on stage and entertaining people. All my family and some of my friends come and see me. It’s very exciting.

Why did you choose the piano and clarinet?

I chose the piano because I think it sounds nice and my mum said it was a good instrument to start with. I started learning the piano when I was seven and I have a lesson after school every Wednesday. When I was seven, I also wanted to learn the saxophone but the teacher said I was too small and it was better to learn the clarinet until I was bigger. I do my clarinet lessons at school and have done four exams now. I’ve never changed to the saxophone and I think I’ll stay with the clarinet now.

Do you think it’s a good idea to have pets?

Yes! I’d love to have a dog. If we had one, it would keep us company and it would keep us healthy when we took it for walks. But if everyone in the family is out all day it might not be a good idea because the dog might get lonely. In that case I think it’s better to have a smaller animal like a rabbit or a hamster, or a more independent pet like a cat.

I am your friend

When you’re down and worried

And you need a caring friend

And nothing, nothing is right for you,

Think of me.

Soon you won’t be alone.

When you close your eyes,

I will be there too.

You just think of my face

And we’ll be together again.

I’ll come to you from wherever I am,

Morning, afternoon, evening or night

For a problem or even a fight.

I am your friend.

If the dark clouds gather

And the thunder begins to sound

And the cold winds blow under your door,

There’s no need to worry.

You needn’t be alone,

Think of me and I’ll be back once more.

When you’ve given your best,

But still you don’t succeed

And you need a friend to help you on your way,

Think of me.

And I will come back to you

To help you out and find the right things to say.

It is important to know you’ve got a friend.

When people are hard and cold they let you down and make you frown

And make you sad if you let them, Don’t let them.

I am your friend.
