You probably laugh at something you find funny, but how much do you really know about jokes and humor? Reader’s Digest (RD) questioned several experts to give us some facts about them.

RD: What’s the oldest joke in the world?

“We can’t know the oldest joke in the world because it would have existed earlier than writing.” says Christie Davies, professor of sociology at the University of Reading in the UK. The oldest joke book that’s been found so far is the Greek Philogelos. It dates from the 4th century AD, although the jokes date from an earlier time. According to psychologist Steve Wilson, director of National Humor Month (April in the US), it contains 265 jokes.

RD: Do some people fail to develop a sense of humor?

Rod Martin, professor of psychology at the Western University in Canada, believes that while everyone is born without a sense of humor, as we develop, humor and laughter begin to appear. “Of course, some children are more serious, quiet, and less likely to laugh frequently, but this doesn’t mean they don’t have a sense of humor.” And according to Steve Wilson, there are no

adults who don’t have a sense of humor. “Almost everyone is able to develop a sense of humor, and I teach people how.” he says.

RD: Do people share a sense of humor unique to their own nation?

Sense of humor does differ a lot by country, according to an author named Scott Weems. British humor is thought to be absurd in nature, while American humor has an aggressive quality. According to a study, Germans are found to find everything funny.

56. What do we know about the oldest joke book?

A. It remains unknown.

B. It was written in Greek.

C. It was found in the UK.

D. It contains the oldest joke.

57. What does Rod Martin agree with about people’s sense of humor?

A. Nobody is born with a sense of humor.

B. Some adults lose it when they grow up.

C. Childhood is the best time to develop such ability.

D. Children have a poorer sense of humor than adults.

58. What kind of humor has an aggressive feature?

A. British humor B. German humor C. Canadian humor D. American humor

B

Life is comprised emotion and sense. When we were babies we reached the pinnacle(顶峰) of emotion. At that time we asked for everything that we wanted, cried as we were uncomfortable, laughed as we were happy and released our emotions day and night. When we grow up we find that if we want to live in a cozier environment we must be sensible enough to deal with our emotions and relationships. Our world is based on sense and beautified by emotion.

Sense is the base of life; it builds up the structure of life, and helps us see the real world. And emotion is the invaluable element of life. It adds colorful paint to our life. Lacking sense we may lose the guiding light and lacking emotion we may lose the value of life.

We admire Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, we are attracted by Michelangelo’s The Creation of Man, and we are carried away by Monet’s Lotus. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet may bring us tears, Victor Hugo’s poems can make a maid’s love revive, and Jane Austin’s stories arouse our dream of holding a party of ladies and gentlemen as an England beauty in the countryside. All of them are people who deserve our respect and showed us sentimental emotion: love, hatred, betrayal, loyalty and so on. They made their works full of emotion, shocked our nerves, and evoked our passions. Somebody may have found their destiny in these works, and surely they influence people time after time. But in fact, though these people or their works have the power to control our mental world, we don’t choose them to be our President or Prime Minister. We cannot deny the fact that our world is based on sense and ration. Mark Twin once said that the passion of friendship is so sweet, steady and royal and enduring a nature that it will last through a whole lifetime if neither of the two friends asks the other to lend money.

Emotion is our nature and sense gives us an eye to live in reality. Only sense makes Jack a dull boy; emotional moments give us vigor and enthusiasm to live and color our life.

Kenya is losing an average of 100 of its 2,000 lions each year because of growing human settlements, increasing farming, climate change and diseases, according to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

“ Lions have a special place in Kenyans’life,” said Paul Udoto,a spokesman for the organization. “ Other than being the symbol of national strength, they are among the Big Five, a main attraction for visitors to Kenya. ”

There were 2,749 lions in Kenya in 2002 and Uieir population dropped to 2,280 by 2004 and to about 2,000 today, according to KWS figures.

“The fall of the lion population is worrying and every effort needs to be made to make sure that Kenya either protects its population of 2, 000 lions at present or increases the numbers to an ecologically acceptable level,” said Mr. Udoto.

“There is no doubt that the numbers are in free fall. I’” said Laurence Frank, project director of Living With Lions, a Kenya-based animal protection organization» i€ When I first came here 30 years ago,I would always hear lions roaring across the land at night and see their tracks in the morning. Now that is very rare.

“The reason is simple。As the numbers of people grow and the numbers of cows increase they take up much of the lion’s space. Alongside that there are other ways, including poisoning 9 to kill lions. ”

Animal lovers are making a new strategy to save the animals. Part of the measures will include tracking lions fitted with radio collars in the Amboseli area in southern Kenya, close to the border with Tanzania.

Wildlife officials in Tanzania face similar challenges in protecting their lions, but there is far less human encroachment (侵入)on the animals’ homeland there than in Kenya,

Each new school year brings fresh reminders of what educators call the summer learning gap. Some call it the summer learning setback. Simply speaking, it means the longer kids are out of school, the more they forget. The only thing they might gain is weight.

Most American schools follow a traditional nine-month calendar with winter and spring breaks and about ten weeks of summer vacation. Some schools follow a year-round calendar. They hold classes for about eight weeks at a time, with a few weeks off in between. The National Association for Year-Round Education says there were fewer than 3,000 such schools at last count. They were spread among forty-six of the fifty states.

But many experts point out that the number of class days in a year-round school is generally the same as in a traditional school. Lead researcher Paul von Hippel said, “Year-round schools don't really solve the problem of the summer learning setback. They simply spread it out across the year.”

Across the country, research shows that students from poor families fall farther behind over the summer than other students. Experts say this can be prevented. They note that many schools and local governments offer programs that can help.

But calling them "summer school" could be a problem. The director of the summer learning center at Johns Hopkins,Ron Fairchild, said research with groups of different parents in Chicago and Baltimore found that almost all strongly disliked the term "summer school". In American culture, the idea of summer vacation is connected to beliefs about freedom and the joys of childhood. The parents welcomed other terms like "summer camp," "extra time" and "hands-on learning."

28. According to the first paragraph, the summer learning gap ____

A. helps children to gain weight B. leads children to work harder

C. improves children's memories D. affects children's regular studies

29. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Students from poor families often fall behind after the vacation.

B. Year-round schools can solve the problem of the learning gap.

C. There are schools in each state following a year-round calendar.

D. Nothing can help the students who fall behind after the vacation.

30. Why did almost all parents dislike the term "summer school"?

A. They attach importance to the children's rights of freedom very much.

B. They are worried about the quality of the "summer school".

C. They want their children to be forced to make up the gap.

D. They can't afford the further study during the vacation.

31. What would be the best title of this passage?

A. Opening Summer Camp B. Forbidding Summer Schools

C. Spreading Year-Round Education D. Minding the Summer Learning

This year’s Miss Chinatown Fashion Show was more than just a showcase for clothing and shoe designers. It was also a fund-raiser (募捐活动) and volunteer sign-up event for the grassroots organization Reading to Kids. “We are looking for donations as well as volunteers to come and read,” said Reading to Kids volunteer Andrea Ramcke. “It is a volunteer organization. There are only two paid workers.”

According to Reading to Kids, the organization tries to encourage underserved children with a love of reading so as to enrich their lives and chances of success in the future. “It is primarily for children who don’t have a lot of reading in the home, whose parents are good at a second language or they are good at a second language, ”Ramcke said. “ so we have a lot of immigrants from everywhere and lots of first generation kids who don’t have a lot of books in the home.” At present, Reading to Kids gathers 901 children and 388 volunteers at reading clubs on the second Saturday of every month at eight Los Angeles elementary schools.

At the reading clubs, pairs of volunteers read aloud to groups of children divided up by age groups, while the parents receive training on how to encourage their children to read at home. Ramcke also added that the kids are asked to join in by asking questions and reviewing the material along with doing a “craft (工艺) project in relation to the book”. Every child also gets a book to take home and books are donated to school libraries through the program.

“The kids develop a love of reading,” Ramcke said. “ Studying doesn’t become as hard to them when they learn how to explain it a little bit better. They learn how to think about their words. Their team communication skills and their grades go up.”

Dear Miss Manners,

Friends of mine lost their home in a house fire. It was terrible. Another friend set up a “go fund me” type page for friends and to donate and help the couple. Many friends, including me, helped with money, meals, lamprey and their dog while they were getting back on their feet. Last week, they sent thankyou notes. My roommate received one addressed to her and I did not. The notes were not in modularized; it was a printed onesizefitsall message. My roommate realized I didn't receive a thankyou note, so she sent a private message to the couple just letting them know I had been left out. I didn't know she had done this until later.

The next day, I got a text message apologizing and saying that I had been left out because their friend who addressed the notes must have missed me! (Miss Manners, they didn't even address the notes themselves!) It was accompanied by a picture of the thankyou note, which was texted to me with the message, “Here is a thank you just for you. ”

I was a little annoyed. I helped them in their need and didn't get a second thought. I have not responded to her text message. Is it fair of me to consider this friendship over? Should I tell her that I am upset, or should I accept that this rude thank you was better than nothing?

25.For what purpose did Mary write the letter?

A.To start a public donation for the unlucky couple.

B.To teach us how to see the true colors of friendship.

C.To tell us to learn a lesson from her story.

D.To ask for advice on how to deal with her annoyance.

26.From the letter we can infer that ________.

A.the couple lost their car in the fire so they had to go everywhere on foot.

B.so far Mary hasn't received a thankyou note addressed to her.

C.Mary's roommate sent the couple a message to blame their carelessness.

D.the couple left Mary out by accident when they wrote the thankyou notes.

27.What does Mary think of the couple she helped? A. careless B. considerate C. unbelievable D. unreliable C

One day, when I was working as a psychologist(心理学家) in England, an adolescent boy showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me. "This boy has lost his family," he wrote. "He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I'm very worried about him. Can you help?" '

I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesn't have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically(同情地).

The first two times we met David didn't say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children’s drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon - in complete silence and without looking at me. It's not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.

Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?

"Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with," I thought. "Perhaps

he senses that I respect his suffering." Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.

"It's your turn," he said.

After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.

Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one - without any words – can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry' on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.

24. When he first met the author, David________.

A. felt a little excited B. walked energetically

C. looked a little nervous D. showed up with his teacher

25. David enjoyed being with the author because he ______.

A. wanted to ask the author for advice

B. need to share sorrow with the author
